Bye From Bakes

James Clouting21 Apr 2023 - 18:55

Ahead of his final game, manager Steve Baker looks back on his 8 years at The Boro.

'After 8 years, 501 games, 4 cup finals, a great FA Trophy run, 2 FA Cup First rounds, around £150k in prize money and sadly, relegation, my time at Harrow Borough FC is over. There has been lots of highs and a few lows, but I’ve loved my time at the club'.

'A big thanks to all my staff, Wilko, Jesse, Smudge, Pearcey, Byron, Magenta, James, Isha, Sam, Godfrey, Andre and Danny. And a special mention to the following - all the Vice Presidents for their non stop support and fundraising. To Club Director Dennis Willis for his non stop support on and off the pitch. Chairman Peter Rogers has been different class since day one. He has always treated me with real respect and is no different whether we win, lose or draw, which is very rare and I've made a friend for life!'

'To all the players that have played for me, I can’t thank you enough for your effort and commitment. Without you, none of this would have been possible and a special thanks to Shaun Preddie and George Moore. To James, Andrew and Alan for their hard work on games, highlights and website coverage'.

'My biggest thanks goes to all the loyal supporters. We may have a smaller fan base than most clubs, but the support through good and bad times has been amazing and I can’t thank you enough. Whilst I have so many great memories, walking out in front of 8,500 at Portsmouth last season is the best and one I’ll never forget. Although I’m sad with how it’s finished, I’m not regretful because I couldn’t have worked any harder and gave the club everything I had'.

'Financially it has become tougher each year for the club to compete at the same level. A lot of people work extremely hard to raise money for the club, including out of their own pocket, but the budgets of some of the clubs in the Southern League are now so much more than when we first went into it. Part of me is proud that we've managed to stay at step 3 for so long, but obviously for it to end the way it has is a huge disappointment and a sad way to go. But it happens at the top level, and it happens at our level as well. This year, that, combined with the worst season of injuries we've had has meant we've gone down, but overall we haven't been good enough and that lies with me'.

'It is now time for a change for both me and the club. The club will always have a place I’m my heart and I wish everyone the best for the future'.
All my love
Bakes
