Anni Evans Added to Volleyball Roster

Senior setter spent last three seasons at Nebraska

SAN DIEGO — Senior setter Anni Evans has been added to the San Diego volleyball roster as a transfer from Nebraska, head coach Jennifer Petrie announced on Tuesday morning.

"Welcome Annika Evans to the Torero family! Anni brings with her a wealth of experience and training from a very high level of competition, Petrie said. "We are excited to add her knowledge and skill set to our already strong returning squad."

Evans, a native of Waverly, Nebraska, joins the Toreros after spending the first three seasons of her college career with the Cornhuskers (2020-2022).

While in Lincoln she helped Nebraska to appearances in a NCAA Regional Semifinal (2022), National Championship (2021), and Regional Final (2020-2021), totaling 416 assists (2.52 A/S), 12 service aces, and 197 digs across 59 matches (165 sets). As a junior in 2022 she played 27 matches and averaged 4.37 assists and 1.78 digs per set in the Huskers' 6-2 system.

In 2021, she received the NCAA Elite 90 Award, given to the player with the highest GPA among Final Four participants.

Prior to Nebraska, Evans attended Waverly High School, where she led the Vikings to the Class B state tournament semifinals in 2018 and 2019 while recording 3,294 career assists as a four-year starter at setter.

San Diego won 31 games in 2022 (including a perfect 18-0 West Coast Conference record) and reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time ever after achieving a No. 2 national ranking, marking the most successful season in program history.

Evans will join a Torero team that includes nine returners from that 2022 squad, including 2022 AVCA Pacific South All-Region and VolleyballMag.com All-American Honorable Mention Leyla Blackwell.

San Diego is set to begin its 2023 season in August.
