Nimz Accepts Head Coaching Position at Northwestern State

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Anna Nimz, who was the associate head coach for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team for the last two seasons, has been hired as the new head coach for the Northwestern State women's basketball team.

"We are extremely excited for Anna as she takes on this new challenge at Northwestern State," UTRGV head coach Lane Lord said. "We are proud of Anna and appreciate her dedication and love for the Vaquero's the past two years. Anna will do an outstanding job of building the women's basketball program at Northwestern State into a contender in the Southland Conference."

Nimz helped the program build on its success over the past two seasons with a pair of double-digit win seasons, including a combined 21 wins at home in that span. Nimz helped the program to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship game and to its fourth postseason appearance (WBI) in program history in 2018-19.

Nimz was a big part of helping install the Vaqueros' offense under Coach Lord. This season, the Vaqueros set the program record for points scored in a WAC game in an 87-88 win over California Baptist while finishing the season third in the WAC in scoring (67.4 ppg).

"I am beyond excited to lead the Northwestern State women's basketball program and be a part of the Northwestern State family," Nimz said. "I am incredibly thankful to Coach Lord for the opportunity to coach with him at UTRGV. The Rio Grande Valley is so special to me and holds a special place in my heart. I will miss everyone so much, especially the student-athletes. I look forward to seeing everyone continue to Rally the Valley."

Prior to arriving at UTRGV, Nimz spent the three seasons as the head coach at Kilgore College where her teams won 21 games, appeared in the NJCAA national rankings, and advanced to the Region 14 Tournament Championship game, coming within one win of advancing to nationals in her last two seasons.

Nimz coached Jade Thurmon, who signed with Iowa State, to First Team All-American and Region 14 MVP honors while developing a pair of Academic All-Americans in Danielle Meador and Alexus Moore.

Before arriving at Kilgore, Nimz served for five seasons as head coach at Labette Community College, where she was also the school's assistant athletic director during her last three years.

Nimz graduated from Pitt State in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Education and then began her coaching career at Pitt State as a graduate assistant. She earned her Master of Education in 2009 and was recognized as the Graduate Assistant of the Year by the kinesiology department.
