WBB announces Matt Thune as assistant coach

Utah Tech women's basketball is excited to announce the hiring of assistant coach Matt Thune.

"We are excited Coach Thune has decided to join our team," head coach JD Gustin said. "He has quality experience in every aspect of NCAA D1 coaching and has proven to be an exceptional recruiter, with connections internationally and across the US.  I was fortunate to work with him previously and was impressed with his passion for the game and how he values and the student athlete experience.  I believe he also truly see's the vision and direction that our university and program are headed."

Thune comes to Utah Tech after spending three seasons at Eastern Kentucky, including two seasons as the program's Associate Head Coach. During his time at EKU he assisted in rebuilding a program that had not won a Division I game the year before their arrival.

In 2019-20, his first season at EKU, the Colonels had the 4th-best turnaround in NCAA D1 and set the mark for the highest GPA in program history. He helped lead EKU to the most overall wins (15) since 2015-16 and the program's first post-season win since 2017 during the 2021-22 season.
Before his time with the Colonels he served as an assistant coach at Binghamton University, an NCAA Division I institution in Binghamton, New York.  The Bearcats were the second-best rebounding team in the America East Conferencein his time there.  They ranked third in blocked shots and fourth in field goal percentage defense.

Before joining the Binghamton program, Thune was an assistant at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah for three seasons (2015-18).  He helped WSU to the most wins in program history (23) and a runner-up finish in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) in 2016.  In 2018, Weber State advanced to the quarterfinals of the WBI.  Thune was the academic coordinator, camp director, and community involvement liaison in addition to his assistant coaching duties.

Thune worked in a variety of roles with the University of Louisville basketball program from 2012 to 2015.  During the 2014-15 season he was the team's video coordinator.  During the summer of 2015, Thune served as the interim assistant coach for recruiting.

The Indianapolis, Indiana native earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Indiana University in 2012.  He completed a master's degree in sport administration at the University of Louisville in 2014.

"I couldn't be more excited and grateful for the opportunity Coach Gustin has presented me with to join his program," Thune said. "This is a monumental time for the Utah Tech women's basketball program and the university as a whole. I'm looking forward to working with JD again, heading back to Utah—where I met my wife Kaitie, and starting to work with this talented group. We are going to have fun, can't wait to get to work."
