Benefits of the UK visitor Visa

A UK visitor visa (Standard visitor) allows you to enter the UK for up to 6 months. It is the ideal route for tourism, visiting family and friends, or conducting short-term business activities like attending meetings and conferences.

This visa offers flexibility, allowing multiple entries during its validity period. It also permits short-term study (up to 30 days) and certain permitted paid engagements, provided they are declared at the time of application.

Eligibility for a visitor visa

To qualify, you must show that you are a genuine visitor who will leave the UK at the end of your visit. You must demonstrate sufficient funds to support yourself without working or accessing public funds.

The Home Office scrutinises your intention to return. Evidence of strong ties to your home country—such as employment, property ownership, or family commitments—is essential to avoid a refusal based on “genuine visitor” rules.

The visitor visa application process

The process begins with an online application where you detail your travel plans and financial situation. You must then book a biometric appointment at a visa application centre to provide your fingerprints and photo.

Supporting documents must be uploaded digitally. These typically include bank statements, a letter from your employer, and proof of your UK accommodation or an invitation letter from a UK host.

visitor Visa processing times

Standard processing for a UK visitor visa usually takes around 3 weeks from the date of your biometric appointment. However, global demand can cause these timelines to fluctuate.

If you need a faster decision, Priority service (5 working days) or Super-priority service (24-48 hours) are available in most locations for an additional fee.

Application fees and costs

Following the April 2026 fee updates, a standard 6-month visitor visa costs £135. Long-term visit visas are also available for 2 years (£506), 5 years (£903), and 10 years (£1,128).

Please note that you must still meet the 6-month stay limit per visit even with a long-term visa. Optional priority processing currently adds a flat fee of £500 to your application cost.

Frequently asked questions

Your UK visitor visa questions answered

You may not need a visa if you are a “non-visa national” (e.g., from the USA, EU, or Australia). However, you will likely need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Visa nationals must always apply for a Standard visitor visa before traveling.

A Standard visitor visa typically allows a stay of up to 180 days (6 months). While you can have a multi-entry visa valid for years, you should avoid spending more time in the UK than in your home country to stay compliant.

Extensions are very rare and only granted in exceptional circumstances, such as being too ill to travel or for medical treatment that must continue. A standard extension application currently costs £1,172.

No. You are strictly prohibited from taking paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person. You can, however, carry out “permitted activities” like attending meetings or negotiating contracts.

Standard visitor visas do not usually have a right of appeal. Your options are to submit a new application addressing the refusal reasons or, if there was a clear legal error, apply for a Judicial Review.
