Upcoming symposium of interest:
THE FUTURE IS NOW: ADVANCING AND SUSTAINING AN EQUITY-ORIENTED SCIENCE

In March 2022, a landmark report on the future of education research at the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) was released by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), aimed at informing IES on (a) critical problems where new research is needed; (b) new methods or approaches for conducting research; (c) new types of research training investments; and (d) how to best organize the application process to meet the needs of the field.

The report’s authoring committee is now hosting a one-day symposium event aimed at engaging audiences in public discussions around major messages and recommendations. These conversations will involve representatives from both the general and special education communities, as well as experts across multiple disciplines and methodological perspectives. Within each conversation, Committee members will share specifics of the report’s recommendations, while asking other participants to reflect on gaps in the current research base and identify specific questions and directions for future work. The goal of these conversations is to help diverse audiences build a shared understanding of what it would take to bring the vision of the report to fruition.

WHEN: Tuesday, 9/20, 9 am - 5 pm ET

A DISCUSSION ABOUT BUILDING THE FIELD FOR COLLABORATIVE EDUCATION RESEARCH

In response to a current lack of programs and pathways to support collaborative education research, this meeting will inform a recently launched multi-organizational effort to build formal training opportunities as a means to broaden participation in this type of research. While some evidence suggests that educational research conducted in collaboration with educators, families, and communities is more useful, impactful, and can ultimately support equitable outcomes for children, we know less about the learning that researchers, practitioners, and community members need to engage in to support such collaborative work, with few formal training opportunities in existence.

In this second meeting co-hosted by CU Boulder School of Education and Stanford University Graduate School of Education, we will share more about this effort and the initial work that has taken place. We will kick off the discussion by summarizing what we learned from the July 22, 2022 conversation, providing an analysis of themes and open questions from our attendees. We will have smaller group discussions to expand on this analysis and to build and expand on the existing ideas the participants have developed so far. This will be our second conversation of three; as such, we will invite participants to indicate what role (if any) they would like to have in this work moving forward. We hope you join us!
