Softball Names Tatum Edwards Assistant Coach

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program has announced the hiring of Tatum Edwards as an assistant coach. Edwards joins the program from Valparaiso, where she last served as an associate head coach.

"Tatum is going to add great value to our pitchers, as well as our coaching staff," said head coach MJ Knighten. "I was fortunate enough to play alongside of her, so I know the competitive edge and the knowledge she is going to instill in our pitchers."

Prior to her time at Valparaiso, Edwards was the head coach of Concordia University in Nebraska, an NAIA program in Seward, Nebraska. In her lone season with the program, she led the team to 23 wins and a pair of All-Conference selections.

Edwards came to Concordia via Nebraska-Omaha, where she was an assistant coach for three seasons. Serving as the lead assistant under head coach Amanda Eberhart, the duo helped lead the Mavericks from four wins in 2019 to 20 in 2021. Edwards also spent a season as a volunteer assistant coach at Purdue.

Her first foray into the college coaching ranks came at her alma mater, where she spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Nebraska. Edwards spent the previous four seasons playing for the Huskers, where she was a teammate of Knighten in 2014.

In her collegiate career, Edwards was a highly successful pitcher, going 70-28 with a 2.02 ERA over 623.1 innings, striking out 551 batters. In addition, Edwards hit .292 with 46 home runs and 158 RBI as a batter. Edwards became one of the most successful pitchers in Huskers history, as a two-time NFCA All-American, a four-time All-Big Ten selection and the 2013 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.

Edwards also spent time in professional softball with National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), playing for the Chicago Bandits and Pennsylvania Rebellion and won two championships in her career.

Originally from Murietta, Calif., Edwards graduated from Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Education and Human Sciences and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration.

The Toreros open fall ball play on October 8 at Cal State Fullerton. The Toreros are set to begin the regular season spring campaign in February.
