'Eskom keeps me awake at night' - Ramaphosa
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will be meeting with ministers in the energy cluster on Sunday as government attempts to come up with interventions to deal with the electricity crisis.
This week Eskom implemented stage 6 load shedding after multiple breakdowns at its power stations.
Ramaphosa was speaking during an ANC campaign in Phillipi near Cape Town on Saturday.
He says government is dealing with the load shedding issue "with the seriousness it deserves".
"Load shedding is not a deliberate act by government or Eskom management. It is just what we are dealing with in terms of power stations that keep on breaking. This has been happening for quite some time, and we are dealing with this problem.
"I want South Africans to understand that we have got our hands on deck, we are not sleeping on the job and Eskom keeps me awake most of the time. We are working on it, and it is an overriding problem for all of us in government.
"I want South Africans to know that [load shedding] it is top of mind problem that we are dealing with."
But Ramaphosa was unable to provide a time frame for the restoration of stability at Eskom.
"There can't be a time frame when you are dealing a broken system. You need to repair the system and it has been so for quite a long time, it has skills base to it, machines, flawed designs of power stations and has an element of sabotage where employees or service providers cut wires so that there can be breakages of units. So it's a combination of all things that we are dealing with."
