DA federal council chair Helen Zille was dragged out of the Fernwood Primary School voting station in Bethelsdorp by the police on Monday.

An internal police indicated that Zille had opened a case of assault against the police after the incident.

“According to Zille, due to the long queue, she walked down the line asking people to wait,” the report read.

“She further stated that when she got to the front of the queue, the ANC observers accused her of canvassing.

“She then alleged that an officer instructed her to leave the premises and threatened to arrest her and put her in the back of a police vehicle.

Zille was “frogmarched” out of the station.

She has accused the officer of twisting her arm and pushing her.

“The cellphone that her colleague was using to film the incident was allegedly taken by the officer.”

Zille opened a case of assault at the Bethelsdorp police station.

The ANC, meanwhile, said Zille's actions at the Fernwood voting station smacked of desperation.

They accused her of canvassing for votes as she was wearing a DA t-shirt, which they said was against the rules.

ANC regional task team coordinator, Luyolo Nqakula, said: “The DA and Helen Zille continue to expose how desperate they are as a party. For a national leader to call a presiding officer names and then continue to threaten and intimidate her is completely unacceptable.

“What they did broke every rule in the book and undermined democracy. She then continued to illegally campaign at a voting station which is also wrong.”

According to Nqakula, the party was looking at taking the matter further.
