Alabama high school drum major marching his way to success after viral Instagram video
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — A young man is gaining national attention because of his skills and moves as a high school drum major at Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery.
When Justin Heideman walks the hallways or sits in class taking notes, he does so without much fan fair.
But when this 17-year-old takes his position leading the Jefferson Davis Marching Band, he is front and center.
"You really can't help but see color. Everybody that's not here with us on a daily basis stands out to them automatically. He is the first thing that they see," said band director Brandon Howard.
Heideman is a white student, leading a predominantly black band.
Not only is he a drum major. He's the head drum major.
The rest of the band calls him 'Vanilla Funk.'
His unique style recently lit up social media, in a video posted and commentary provided by Pubby Longway.
This video went viral on Instagram within hours.
Justin admits the attention has been overwhelming.
That's why he wants to share it with his squad and fellow band members.
