Richard Daley – Mayor of Chicago, 1989-2011
The longest-serving Mayor of Chicago has left office after 22 years in the chair. He managed to turn the declining Rust Belt city into a destination city, pushed through immigration reform and masterly dealt with the racism issue, winning the support of the black Chicagoans. These problems are characteristic of many big cities. So what advice does the experienced Mayor have for Moscow? Spotlight welcomes veteran US political war-horse and the longest serving Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley.

Why was he re elected so many times? The public was very smart.
When you give something for nothing to people who are the poorest
and pay no taxes, they will re elect you for life. Chicago now has the highest
income taxes, sales taxes, and now corporate taxes. Yes he was a great mayor
many jobs left the city and state. If tomorrow you told those 45% of the people who
pay no taxes, the lowest on the pay scale. That they will start paying taxes, then
they would become republican overnight. Democrats know a winning strategy.
Keep the people dependent on the state and you win.

Many people here in chicago do not share RT's favorable view of our former mayor. He left this city with a large deficit of over $500 million , a failing school system with a deficit of $720 million and rising street crime that even affects the most prestigious shopping and tourist areas. He is responsible for selling Chicago's parking meters for a pittance to corporation owned by a large politically connected New York bank and the Kingdom of Abu Dhabi. During his last 10 years in office the population of Chicago declined by over 200,000. People are voting with their feet by moving OUT of Chicago due to high taxes and a declining quality of life and rising insecurity. In my opinion the former Mayor did not run or reelection because he was aware of the facts and knew he was heading for defeat. he passed the ball to his successor who is now faced with the difficult job of cleaning up the mess in the middle of a slowing economy. I generally like RT News because this channel presents a different view of news stories than is available through the US mainstream media. However , in this case I believe your reporter adopted the conventional view of Mayor Daley as a successful mayor of one of this country's great cities. That is the myth. The reality is different and I would hope your reporter would dig deeper to uncover the rest of the story.
