HOUSTON EDUCATION RESEARCH CONSORTIUM STUDIES DECENTRALIZATION

In “HISD's Decentralization Reform (Part 3: Decentralization and Student Achievement),” Kori Stroub examines the impact of decentralization on student achievement in part three of a four-part series on the implementation and impact of the Houston Independent School District’s (HISD) decision to decentralize.

In “HISD's Decentralization Reform (Part 4: Funding),” Jodi Moon, Daniel Potter, and Jay Aiyer look at the impact of decentralization on funding equity, examining the current general fund budgeting strategy overall, across different types of schools, and based on schools’ proportion of economically disadvantaged students in the final part of the series.

REL CENTRAL EXAMINES TEACHER MOBILITY

In “
Teacher Retention, Mobility, and Attrition in Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota,” Stephen J. Meyer, Emma V. Espel, Jennifer L. Weston-Sementelli, and Marina Serdiouk provide teacher retention, mobility, and attrition rates in four states to help state and district administrators understand how needs for recruitment and retention differ across states, rural and nonrural settings, and school districts.

"Afterschool Programs: A Review of Evidence Under the Every Student Succeeds Act": Ruth Curran Neild, Sandra Jo Wilson, and Wendy McClanahan use the ESSA evidence framework to identify afterschool programs with strong evidence of effectiveness and positive impacts on students.

"The Generalizability Puzzle": Mary Ann Bates and Rachel Glennerster provide a practical approach for combining evidence of different kinds to assess whether a given policy will likely generalize to other contexts. Though written from the perspective of anti-poverty research, education researchers and policymakers might find the concepts discussed here useful in their own contexts as well.
