MEMPHIS –
Christian Brothers University Director of Athletics Brian Summers announced the resignation of Mike Nienaber, Head Men's Basketball Coach, on Thursday, May 2 to pursue another coaching opportunity.
"Coach Nienaber has been an institution for CBU basketball," Summers said. "He has elevated our program to aspirational heights and graduated a litany of players during his time here. I'm very sorry to see him go. I was hopeful he would retire a Buc."
Nienaber, who is the winningest coach in program history, spent the last 20 seasons leading the Bucs to a 351-224 record, including two Gulf South Conference championships (2007-08, 2012-13), five trips to the NCAA Division II Basketball Tournament, a Sweet 16 (2012) and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight (2008-09). Nienaber, who is also the fourth-winningest coach in GSC history, is a three-time GSC Coach of the Year recipient (West Division 2006-07, 2008-09, GSC 2012-13) and also a recipient of the 2009 NABC South Region Coach of the Year Award.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native has coached 22 All-GSC selections, has guided two GSC Player of the Year honorees, eight GSC Freshmen of the Year and two NABC All-Americans.
"Our search to find Coach Nienaber's replacement will begin immediately," Summers added. "This position is desirable in NCAA Division II. We will work quickly and I have every confidence we will hire a top-caliber individual who will carry CBU's winning legacy forward."
