The perfect starting point for anyone new to horological technical drawing, this hands-on course introduces the core principles and practices of precise drafting. You’ll learn essential skills such as layout, line types, orthographic projections, and the correct use of technical drawing tools. Through guided practical exercises and feedback, you’ll gain the confidence to both create and interpret accurate technical drawings—laying a strong foundation for the more advanced techniques explored in Part 2.

Ideal for beginners, this course supports all areas of learning within the Distance Learning Course and forms the first step toward preparing for the Drawing Clock/Watch Escapements (Unit D6) module. No prior experience is required.

The course begins with an introduction to drawing theory, conventions, layout, and grammar before progressing into practical exercises. You’ll have the chance to practise under professional guidance, discuss challenges with fellow students, and build confidence in your new skills. By the end, you’ll be ready to apply your learning to your own projects and advance to more complex drawing techniques in future classes. This course is open to all BHI members.

Ross has been a professional horologist for nearly 20 years. He studied with the BHI and at the School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University. Ross is the Vice Chairman of the BHI.
