Second Rift Event Shenanigans

Starting October 14th and culminating precisely a week after that, the Rift will become a magical and wondrous place. Or rather, an even more magical place than it usually is. A fairytale-like place, to be precise. And no, not just one fairytale. Any and all fairytales. Disney, original fairytales, mystical creatures, absolutely anything goes. Castles and faeries--evil or not evil--and curses that won't be lifted for the entirety of that week can be expected. The idea originated in a meme a while back, with us wondering how we could bring a little bit of lighthearted crack to Chicago.

Whether this ends in laughter or tears or both is entirely up to you.

Now, we know that not everyone is well-versed in Disney, nor is it their cup of tea, and we like to make sure the plots are kept as open as possible, so it is important to make mention of this--you do not have to know your Disney characters at all to participate in this event. Your characters do not have to become a specific character within the Disney archetypes, nor are the Rift effects limited strictly to Disney-like things.

Fairytales of all shapes and sizes are not only allowed, but encouraged and hoped for. Your characters can get lost in the woods and find the Big Bad Wolf, lost at sea with mythical mermaids, they can dance with faeries, they can find themselves in mortal peril, run wild with that imagination, kids.

If there's a storyline from any one of these tales you're interested in dabbling with, run with it! If there's a story that made you furious with its message and you always felt could've used a different ending, change it to your heart's desire!

As always, the sky is the limit with the Rift.

Below, we will give some general themes/ideas that will happen throughout the week that will help generate ideas of your own, or if you'd like to involve your character in any and all of these, feel free! We'll be suggesting more ideas as the date for the plot approaches, and if there are any questions or suggestions at all, don't hesitate in sending the mod's an email! We really just want you all to have fun with it.

The Peter Pan Syndrome

Peter Pan was a boy that never wanted to grow up, remaining childlike to his heart's content. The Rift will tweak this desire of his when Tinkerbell's fairy dust falls through the rift and reaches your character. What does that mean? Well, your character could find themselves turning back into the six-year-old version of themseves. Six or seven or eight--point is, they're kids again and it'll be one heck of a surprise. Whether this is just a physical change or an emotional and mental change is entirely up to you.

Proverbial Forbidden Fruit

Carts filled with luscious green and red apples will be scattered throughout the city. Your character will be compelled to take one bite--just one bite! Alas, one bite alone does the trick. Despite knowing nothing good may come of it. What happens next is--once again, you guessed it!--entirely up to you. Does your character begin to behave wildly out of character for themselves? Do they fall into a deep sleep? Are they suddenly compelled to start telling the truth when they've been keeping secrets? Is their disposition suddenly filled with sunshine and rainbows when they've been otherwise grumpy and hermit-y and vice-versa? Are they acting loopy, or funny, or sad? It all depends on what you want for your character. Just know these carts will be there throughout the week, generally making life more difficult.

And down the rabbit hole!

Alice fell down a rabbit hole and found herself in Wonderland. The looking glass will have fallen through the Rift, creating all sorts of rabbit holes throughout the city. Should your character find themselves falling through one of these rabbit holes, they will be transported somewhere else! Where? Anywhere else! Alternate dimensions, another country far far away, a world completely different to this one, perhaps they travel back in time and see history in the making. Wanderers absolutely cannot go back to their home worlds, but anything else is fair game.

Curses and Faustian Bargains

Your character is suddenly cursed. They've turned into a beast, they've lost their voice, they're experiencing leg pains, they might even find their soul is in danger of being lost for good if they've decided to make a bargain with some of the enchanted creatures that begin appearing throughout the Park, every night for a week at midnight. The stakes can be raised as high as you'd like!

There is no limit to the curses themselves. It can be tailored to fit your character, to either help them grow or set them back a few steps, or just teach them a lesson. The curse would be lifted in a week--or sooner, if they learn said lesson quickly. They won't really lose their souls for good.

The Player
Name: Your name
Age: It's up to you whether you want to put this or not. We ask more for curiosity' sake.
Contact: E-mail, personal LJ, or AIM. Please, give us your e-mail if you are accepted so we have a way to contact you.
Past Role Playing Experience: How long you have been playing, where you've played before... whatever you think is useful. You will not be judged on this, but it helps us to know where you're coming from.

The Character
Name: Character's full name.
Age/Birthdate: Birthdate is not necessary if it's not available in your character's canon; at least guess at their age, though.
Species: Demon, angel, nephilim, supernatural human, or wanderer. All fandom characters are wanderers.
*Type: What type of angel or demon, what animals they can change into for shapeshifters, what the Rift changed about a wanderer, etc.
Canon: Only applicable to wanderers - if they’re an original character, just state that.
*Pre-existing powers: Again, only applicable to wanderers. If they had any special abilities before they came through the Rift - magic or psychic or whatever - this is where you note that.
Livejournal: The character’s journal.
Played By: This is the actor, musician, model, etc. you will use for your character’s icons to represent them.
Icon: Please provide a link (uploaded to your own server, or to LiveJournal’s userpic server) of a good quality (preferably textless, 100×100) icon of your character for the cast list page! If someone else made the icon be sure to credit it on your character’s journal.

Appearance: This section is not as important as the rest. One paragraph should work.

Personality: We'd prefer at least 2-3 paragraphs for this. Try to delve into what makes this character tick. Think about their negative traits and their positive traits. If you'd like, include how they interact with other people, strangers, family, friends. I put more value in the personality section than in any other section.

History: AS OF MARCH 28th, this section of the application is for Original characters and AU characters only. You do not need to summarize every moment of your character's life. Focus on the most important moments in their life and the events that shaped them. This should be 2-3 paragraphs, depending on how old the character is.

Events: AS OF MARCH 28TH, this section of the application is for FANDOM CHARACTERS only. List two events from their history that have made the character who they are when they come into the game and then describe how/why each event affected them.

Writing Sample: Be sure to write this character in your sample. Two to three paragraphs will work fine. You can use a story or RP post you’ve previously written. We prefer it to be in third person, present tense, because that's consistent with the style of RP in game.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. When can my character come into the role play?

That is entirely up to you. If you want them to already know about what's going on and have been aware for a while or if you want them to just now be discovering their powers, walking through the rift, or becoming an angel/demon... that's all up to you. Feel free to contact other players if you want to establish relationships beforehand.

2. When does my character get his/her journal? How does that work?

When your character walks through the rift, becomes an angel/demon, or discovers their power for the first time, an appropriate journal will appear beside them after they've slept that first night.

They can, also, comment on the entries that they read. The comments will appear under the entry with their name next to it.

3. What happens if someone gets their hands on another person's journal?

They can write in it and say whatever they'd like. For all intents and purposes, it will appear in everyone else's journal under the name of who own's the journal, not who writes in it.

4. What does the term [Locked to...] mean when used in entries?

It means that only the characters that the entry is locked to can read that entry in their own journals. The entry simply won't appear in anyone else's. The lock can be as specific as someone's name and as general as 'people who like poetry' or 'people in law enforcement'.

5. If I want to use a fandom character, can I choose where I bring them in at?

Yes, if you choose a fandom character, you can bring them in from anywhere in their canon, even if there are other characters from that fandom from a different part of that canon. Please, make a note of where you choose to bring them in from in their profile so that other players will know (even if their characters are amusingly confused).

6. Is there an age limit on joining the game?

No, there isn't. We have found that there are some 15 year olds who write better than 25 year olds. We judge applications on content, and we require all explicit content to have a warning and be under a cut. It's up to the player's discretion to click or not.

7. How do my native characters' (non-wanderer) powers work?

That is up to the role player's discretion. Thankfully, powers vary in characters here like hair color. Powers, even of this world among angels and demons, are more individually specific than some wide, general guideline. For instance, there have been Glays demons that influence other peoples emotions through the written word and through their mind.

8. My wanderer doesn't fit __insert Rift-race here__ when it comes to their magic, elemental, etc. is this a problem?

No, it's not. Wanderers have absolutely nothing to do with supernaturals, angels, and demons. They are not subject to the same rules and stipulations. However, if it makes it easier on you, feel free to have your Wanderer become a supernatural, because of their journey through the Rift, and use the already laid out stipulations.

Just don't worry about a Wanderer not fitting the mold.

9. What's the deal on Chicago? Is there anywhere else to go other than the Conrad hotel?

The world that this takes place in is very similar to our world in names, but it's different enough that even if you don't know the city well, you can make up places within the city to go. You are free to take creative license (within reason) when it comes to this world's Chicago.

Note: You do not have to add everyone as a friend to your character's journal. Many characters insist on only adding people they actually consider friends or enemies that they want to keep a close eye on.

The decision is up to you. It is perfectly acceptable to use The Members page of the community to keep track of journal posts if you'd prefer. This is not a journal based game so paying attention to those entries is not necessary, but will likely keep your character in the know.
