Haven't done this in a while, and was in the mood.

First Texture Post

I admit, I am a texture whore when it comes to graphics; most of my icons use brushes or textures. It may not always seem that way with the sometimes very simple and basic icons I make, but subtle use of a brush or texture can make an icon really stand out. So I've decided to try my hand at making some of my own! The first batch is an experimental light texture one.

Anybody out there?

I have icons! Yes, it's true! I know it's been a number of months since I updated with actual graphics so I have quite a few for you today! I lost a bit of my inspiration and ambition for graphic making for a while but I seem to have gotten a bit of it back. So I hope to be making graphics more regularly again. Plus I'm saving up for a trip to England in March and won't be going out much, lol, so I'll have some extra time on my hands.

The Battlestar Galactica icons are all black and white (save for one or two), I felt like doing a group of black and white icons and thought the BSG images looked good and dramatic that way. Hope you enjoy them! *If you haven't seen seasons 3 or 4 I warn you there will be SPOILERS ahead*

NEW USERINFO TABLES

It's been about a month since I've posted actual graphics, sorry! I had put these together back in April, but then got so caught up in the tutorials that I set them aside and forgot about them. So I dug them back out, polished them up and put together a post for you. Hopefully it all makes sense, if not let me know and I'll do my best to help.

NOTE: The image banners I give for the tables are customizable. If you'd like your name or some other word or phrase just let me know. Just be sure to let me know which color and style you'd like. Also, if you'd like the table to be a different color all together and are not sure how to go about doing that let me know and I'll edit it for you.

SECOND NOTE: Please upload the images for the tables to your own server. I use photobucket.

The main purpose of textures and brushes are to enhance your image, not completely distract from it. You want to attain a certain effect, not compromise the integrity of your base image. Because as I’ve continually said before you add textures, brushes or text you need a quality base image. When using certain textures or brushes however there are times when you create the base to match or fit them. Even on that occasion you still need to concentrate on the quality of that image, don’t let the brush or texture distract you.

NOTE: These do's, don'ts and tips are written based on the assumption you have read the previous tutorials. These tutorials are to be used as steps. By this point you should be somewhat more comfortable in the basics and tools of your Paint Shop Pro.

BLEND MODES: Normal. Darken. Lighten. Hue. Hue (Legacy). Saturation. Saturation (Legacy). Color. Color (Legacy). Lumincance. Luminance (Legacy). Multiply. Screen. Dissolve. Overlay. Hardlight. Softlight. Difference. Dodge. Burn. Exclusion. You can set a layer (except your background layer) to any one of those. But what do they do? Sure many of them are fairly self explanitory, but when do you know which to choose? Here I'm going to try and explain when and with what I'd use each 'Blend Mode'.
NORMAL Normal is normal. There is no special effect, you cannot see through it. You can erase parts of it or stamp a brush onto it, but it is what it is.	+
DARKEN/LIGHTEN These two do the same thing, only at opposite ends of the spectrum. It sounds simple enough, but when you use a brush and set it to Darken the darker parts of that brush is what you will see the most of over your base image. Set it to lighten and the lightest parts of the brush will be seen over your base image. I use lighten to add light textures (though I mostly use screen - see below). HUE/HUE(LEGACY) COLOR/COLOR(LEGACY) These are all really very similar. Basically, if you make a new layer and fill it with a color or brush and set it to any of these blend modes the background with be tinted with the color of your new layer. The difference between the regular and legacy is the contrast.	+ / HUE / HUE (LEGACY) / SATURATION / SATURATION (LEGACY)
SATURATION/SAT.(LEGACY) When you make a new layer and fill it with a color or texture and set it to this it can make the colors in your base image either duller or brighter (higher saturation of colors). Again, the difference between regular saturation and the one with legacy is basically just the contrast. I've used different tones on the layers to show the different variations without having to make four different icons.	+ / SATURATION / SATURATION (LEGACY)
LUMINANCE/LUM.(LEGAGY) I never use this blend mode. There may very well be a brilliant way to use it, but I haven’t been patient enough to experiment with it. Basically what it seems to do is make the colors in your icon base become as saturated as possible, usual to a degree and contrast that is undesirable. Even when I change the opacity percentage I’m not very happy with the effect achieved. It doesn’t even matter what color you use, only what brightness. I've used different tones on the layers to show the different variations without having to make four different icons.	+ / LUMINANCE / LUMINANCE (LEGACY)
MULTIPLY This is one of the blend modes I use most and find most useful for adding textures and brushes. When you set a brush to multiply all the darkest areas will stay normal and the lighter areas will be see through. Though only the black areas will stay, anything lighter will be come slightly see through, but the darker it is the darker it makes the base image below it. First brush by threeeyespei. Second brush by deleted user. Third brush by kekoah.	+ = + = + =
SCREEN This is the opposite of Multiply. I didn't put them together because I use them so much I felt they deserved seperate descriptions. When you set a layer to screen all the lightest parts will show up, the darkest parts will be harder to see. I mainly use this blend mode for light textures. First brush by innocent_lexys. Second brush by deleted user. Third brush by kekoah.	+ = + = + =
DISSOLVE I've never found a use for this blend mode. I can't see what purpose it could serve for graphic making. No matter the opacity you set it at it will look like a bunch of dots.	100% AND 80% OPACITY 40% AND 10% OPACITY
OVERLAY / DODGE Overlay and Dodge are not exactly the same, but they are very similar. They both achieve the similar effect of brightening the base image. It's just that Dodge does it to a much higher degree. So for the most part you don't want to use dodge at 100% opacity. If you want it to be a little more subtle I suggest you set the layer to overlay. I sometimes use overlay to achieve a brighter more contrasted icon. Try duplicating the base image and setting it to overlay, see what you get. Granted it won't work with every base, and you should be sure to fiddle with the opacity.	+ BASE IMAGE + NEW LAYER / OVERLAY W/ NEW LAYER AT 100% vs OVERLAY USING DUPLICATED BASE / DODGE AT 100% OPACITY vs DODGE AT 50% OPACITY
HARDLIGHT / SOFTLIGHT I use these blend modes quite a bit. I tend to duplicate the bases and set them to either softlight or hardlight. It helps to give just a little more contrast and depth to an icon. They both do the same thing only Hardlight, as it's name implies... does it harder, to a slightly harsher degree.	/ / BASE / BASE DUPLICATED & SET TO SOFTLIGHT / SET TO HARDLIGHT
DIFFERENCE / EXCLUSION Again these achieve similar effects, just to different degrees. Depending on the color and brightness it can look a bit like a negative image.	NEW LAYER / DIFFERENCE / EXCLUSION NEW LAYER / DIFFERENCE / EXCLUSION
BURN This is basically the exact opposite of Dodge. In stead of brightening it will bring out the darker tones in your base image. The darker the brush or new layer, the darker the base image will be.	LIGHTER COLOR SET TO BURN DARKER COLOR SET TO BURN / THEN SET TO 50% OPACITY

But what is a brush? Well, brushes I tend to liken to a stamp. If you can add it to your PSP brushes, enabling you to change the size and color then it's a brush. You wouldn't want to do that with a texture, as you'd mostly want to use them as-is. Brushes can be any size, as you can always resize it for the icons. So perhaps the bigger the better, as resizing to make something smaller is best. Resizing to make something bigger will make it look grainy and of poor quality. BRUSH DON'Ts You need to make the brush a part of the image. That means creating shadow, or perhaps erasing part of it with the eraser brush set to a lower percentage hardness. Slapping on a brush doesn't make it a good icon. Where you place the brush can make or break your icon. A perfectly good base can be wasted with poor brush placement. It's not just about placement either, the wrong color or size is just as disastrous. To the right are examples of poor brush placement. Below this are the DO'S, how that particular brush should be used with each base. Also, remember LAYERS ARE YOUR FRIEND. Always create a new rastor layer for EVERY brush you use. That way they are each seperate and can be moved around and edit seperately!	ICON 01 - ICON 02 ICON 03 - ICON 04
BRUSH DO'S - ICON 01 For this particular base slapping a flower brush on doesn't quite work. The people and grass already make it a bit busy. So let's use a technique we used for text: use a texture. I used the same texture and shadow technique as I did before. Notice how in the second icon the flower brush isn't overpowering the image. However the color of the flower brush still ties it in with the image and makes the icon one cohesive unit. Again I added tiny text for a little more detail, but made sure to erase the part of the tiny text brush that was over the flower.	DON'T ------ DO
BRUSH DO'S - ICON 02 Placing a brush directly over your subject is a bad idea 98% of the time. I don't say 100% because there are always artistic exceptions. Until you've reached a level where you can tell the difference between artistic and just bad placement however, I suggest you offset your brush or place it in the less busiest part of your icon. To correct this brush don't I just moved it over off the center of the subject. It's still partially on the subject, yes; but it's over a less busy area and the white shows up well against the dark blue. I added a shadow to the brush as well to really make it stand out. Yet again I've added tiny text. I like using it, I can't help it! If you don't like the way it looks then don't use it.	DON'T ------ DO
BRUSH DO'S - ICON 03 Like I said in Text: Tips and Suggestions, don't overuse tiny text! Slapping a tiny text brush on an icon to fill space can help, but not if it looks like an essay length brush like this icon don't. If I've said it once I've said it a dozen times: LESS IS MORE. If your subject is centered then put a small line of tiny text centered over top like I've done to the right. Maybe add some real text as well, tiny text doesn't always look good alone. If you can't figure out what text or other brushes to use with the tiny text maybe the icon would just be better off plain.	DON'T ------ DO
BRUSH DO'S - ICON 04 One of the biggest issues I see with icons today is poor brush use. Please understand, putting a brush on an icon will not and cannot make it look better if you don't do it right! A bad base image cannot be made better with a random brush. And a good base image can be ruined by a bad choice in brush, I've seen it happen many more times then I would like. You may look at this brush DON't and think "Why would anyone do that?" I ask myself the same thing when I actually see people use brushes like this. What I would do to correct this particular poor brush use is move it, make the brush a different size and use it much like I used the texture in Text Meets Texture. I gave the same larger brush a shadow (at 36% opacity) and added some text (Georgia, size 6) and tiny text. The new final product is better, not great, but better.	DON'T ------ DO
EXAMPLES Here are a few more examples of icons with brushes. I tend not to use brushes very much. I mostly use tiny text, my Yankee symbol brush or any brush that will help text stand out. That doesn't mean other brushes wouldn't look good, but like I said I feel less is more.

Now what is a texture, what's the difference between them and brushes? A texture is, obviously, something you use to add texture. It's not a simple stamp brush. It has a certain texture or design. It may be done in black and white or have a brilliant color scheme. They can be as simple as a light texture, added to give the icon some dabs of color and light. Or maybe a light grey gunge texture to give the icon an aged look. Or they can be as complex as a scrapbook texture. They could also be stock images. Also, you tend to set the texture layers to something other than 'Normal' to achieve an effect. You'd set a light texture to 'Screen' or 'Lighten'. A grey texture you'd want to set to 'Multiply'. Whereas a brush layer you'd most likely want to leave set to 'Normal'. They can be 100x100 pixels or the size of a desktop wallpaper. As I've said before I prefer most of my textures to be much larger than icon sized. That way I can move it around and choose just the right part of the texture to use. I prefer having one very large texture than 10 small ones, it just seems much more versatile to me.
TEXTURE DON'Ts Just like brushes you need to make the texture a part of the image. Textures can be a bit trickier. Not only are there many different types, but because of that they have many more uses. Experiment with different types, check out different tutorials. There may be many ways to use them, but that doesn't mean there's less room for error. If anything there's more. To the right are examples of poor texture use. Below this are the DO'S, how that particular texture type should be used with each base.
TEXTURE DO'S - ICON 01 Light textures can take away just as much as they can add to your icon. They're often and easily extremely missused. Take my DON'T example, I see this far too often. Not only is the light texture covering the face, but you can't make most of it out because it's being used with an image with such a bright background. How do I fix this? Simple. First... CHOOSE A DIFFERENT LIGHT TEXTURE! One that doesn't cover the face. I used THESE light textures by ohstarfish over at tenandathird. So I chose one that fit better. Still, how do we make the light texture more visible? For this I added a grey texture by ohfreckle. I moved it around so that the big scratches didn't cover the icon, just the grey areas. I added it as a new layer and set that layer to MULTIPLY. The light texture I set to SCREEN above the grey texture.. NOTE: I played with the Hue/Saturation/Lightness a bit, but I put that layer OVER the grey texture layer and UNDER the light texture layer.	DON'T ------ DO
TEXTURE DO'S - ICON 02 A grunge texture can, like any other texture, work well if you choose the right texture for the right icon. This icon for example has the wrong texture. It's far too dark and distracting. It might work if it were paired with text that might explain why the subject is being covered. However to correct this I just chose a different texture. Texture on first icon by kekoah, texture in second icon is by ewanism. Adding a grey grungy texture can help tone down the contrast and color of an image. This can make it easier to use text or a lighter brush on top and have it visible without having to give it a shadow.	DON'T ------ DO W/OUT TEXTURE -- W/ TEXTURE
TEXTURE DO'S - ICON 03 Setting a texture to 'Multiply' is not always a good idea. It works well when you have a grey texture and a subject on a light background. However it doesn't work well with more colorfully designed textures. Even a grey texture set to Multiply on a subject with a dark background won't always look very good. Take our third DON'T example. Setting this scrapbook texture to Multiply has only succeeded in making Draco Malfoy look green. To fix this one I set the texture to 'Normal' and erased enough so that only half of Draco's face was showing. I gave the texture a bit of a shadow as well. This isn't the only option you'd have, but this is how I tend to use textures. Go here for three other texture tutorials I made back in 2006. I'm not as fond of the icons anymore but the techniques are still relevant.	DON'T ------ DO Scrapbook textures by tragic_icons.
TEXTURE DO'S - ICON 04 Stock images can be very useful textures. For this particular DON'T and DO I used this cloud stock image by noisettee. When placed as a new layer and set to Multiply you get the DON'T, but if you just move the texture a bit and set it to Screen you get the DO. A small change, but a huge difference.	DON'T ------ DO
EXAMPLES Here are examples of various ways I've used textures. I'm not sure how to teach you how to use a texture, it was such a trial and error process for me. Plus with the sheer number and varieties of textures the possibilities are so vast. It's hard to know where to begin. However HERE are three other texture tutorials I made back in '06; three different ways to use textures.

MAKE TEXT YOUR FRIEND: PART II - TEXT TECHNIQUES

I've said it a few times now: text is only your friend if you know how to use it. I can't teach you how to make text look good on any and every icon. I can however teach you some techniques to at least make the text readable on just about any icon. These tutorials will be teaching you how to do just that. Though only practice and time will help you realize what text looks good on which icon and how. Remember however, these are just teaching you a few ways I use. They are not the 'right' or only ways to go about using text. Take what you learn here and apply it.

STEP ONE First thing is first, there's no point in adding text if you don't have a decent base. For this particular exercise we're going to start out with a base from the GOOD BASE TUTORIAL.
STEP TWO When it comes to text and Paint Shop Pro I suggest always creating the text as a 'Vector' layer. This will help you go back later and change it if need be, without having to erase it. (To do that select the TEXT TOOL again and click directly on the text you'd like to change.)
STEP THREE I'm going to use a bold text called teaspoon. Choose TEXT TOOL, click on the icon base and a text box should appear. Type in your text and click apply.
STEP FOUR Now select the MOVE TOOL and move your text to where you'd like it.
STEP FIVE The icon actually looks good without giving the text a shadow, but that is the point of this tutorial so here goes. Right click on the text Vector layer in the layer toolbox and select 'duplicate'. You'll now have two layers of the same text.
STEP SIX Select the Text Tool again and click directly on the top text layer (on the image, not the layer toolbox). Highlight the text in the TEXT ENTRY window that appears, make the text black. (Feel free to try another dark color depending on your base!)
STEP SEVEN Select the MOVE TOOL again. Move the black text a few pixles in the direction where you wand your shadow to be.
STEP EIGHT Now, in the layers toolbox on the right side of the program. Select the top layer (the black text), left click on it (keep your mouse button down) and drag it down below the other text/vector layer. Now you have shadow!
STEP NINE If you would like to make the shadow less sharp you can blur it. To do that choose ADJUST from the top toolbar (the one with FILE, EDIT, VIEW etc.). Select BLUR from that drop down menu. There are a few choices of how to blur and how much, but the quickest and easiest is to just choose simply 'blur'. NOTE: Be sure you have the black font layer selected, you don't want to blur the wrong layer.
STEP TEN TIP: Don't be afriad to experiment. Especially with the OPACITY. Many times it's best to make the shadow much less than 100% opacity. You want to give the text a little emphasis, but you don't need the darkest shadow possible to do this.
OTHER EXAMPLES Here are a few other icons using the same effect.

STEP ONE First thing is first, there's no point in adding text if you don't have a decent base. For this particular exercise we're going to start out with a base from the GOOD BASE TUTORIAL.
STEP TWO Next you need to create a new Rastor layer. Click on the button pointed out by my cursor in the image to the right and just click 'ok' when the window pops open.
STEP THREE We're going to fill that layer completely with black. Select the 'Flood Fill Tool', then select the color black from the color palette. Click on the image (be sure the top layer/new raster layer is selected/highlighted) and it should fill that layer with black.
STEP FOUR Next select the Text Tool and type in your text. Be sure the color of the text is a lighter shade, so it can be seen well when outlined in black. Also, before you hit Apply, you must set the text to 'Floating' under the 'Create As' option. Now hit apply. The text should look like it's being outlined by a blinking dotted line. As you will see in your layers toolbox the text is considered a 'floating selection' The text does not need to be in a certain place yet, just make sure that it's within the visible black area.
STEP FIVE Now select 'Selections' from the very top toolbar. From that drop-down menu select 'Modify', from that drop-down menu select 'Expand'. From this window you can choose how many pixels to expand, or basically how many pixles you wand your border to be. (One or two is usually sufficient.)
STEP SIX Next go to the top toolbar again and click 'Edit', select 'Copy' from the drop-down menu. After that go to 'Edit' again, this time select paste and then 'Paste As New Layer' from that drop-down menu. Through all of this be sure that the top layer is still selected, the 'floating selection' will have been gone since you selected to 'Expand'.
STEP SEVEN You may now erase Raster Layer 1, that layer has served it's purpose as a black base for your border. You should now be left with the background and Raster Layer 2 which has your now bordered text on it. You may still have that dotted blinking line, but it has no effect on your text now. Click CTRL and D at the same time to 'deselect'. (This is a shortcut, you can also go to 'Selections' then select click 'Select None'.)
STEP EIGHT And there you have it! A text with border. You can use your 'Move Tool' to place the text wherever you please as, as well as add any other effects you see fit. While this isn't my first choice of text technique for this image, the purpose was to teach you how to create a border and hopefully you now know how to do that! :) SIDE NOTE: I suggest saving your icons as .png files as opposed to .jpg or .gif. The quality of your icon will be much clearer. This goes for any graphic you make or save from someone's graphic community.

NOTES There is certainly more than one way to use a texture, as well as more than one way to use a texture with text. I'll be showing you one way that I use most often, and then you can experiment with other ways or find other tutorials for specific effects. This (icon to the right) is the final product we'll be achieveing. It's simple yet effective.

STEP TWO Select your texture. For this tutorial (and more times than not) I'll be using a basic grungy grey texture by ohfreckle. If you click the link you'll see it's well over 100x100 pixels. I prefer my textures that way. I can move it around and choose just the right part of the texture to use. I prefer having one very large texture than 10 small ones, it's just much more versatile.	Good places for textures: Search for 'textures' at deviantART. ownthesunshine tragic_icons dearest ...to name a few...
STEP THREE Copy and paste that texture as a new layer over your existing base (on top of all your other layers).
STEP FOUR Now, you can either erase the portion of the texture you do not want or move the texture so that the edge is covering the little bit you want it to cover. If you erase be sure to set the erase tool to 100% HARDNESS so it will be a straight edge.
STEP FIVE I don't do this every time I use a texture this way, but sometimes it's nice to add a shadow. It helps to give the texture and icon a little depth. To make a shadow of the texture I duplicate the texture layer (right click on the layer in the layer toolbox and select 'duplicate'). I then set the brightness/contrast so that the texture will become totally black. Now go to 'Adjust' (very top toolbar), 'Blur' then 'Blur More'.
STEP SIX Next left click on the blackened texture layer and drag it below the grey grungy texture. You now have a shadow for your texture. Play with the opacity a bit, remember: less is more.
STEP SEVEN Now all you need to do is add your text. For this I highly suggest you create your text as a 'Vector' layer. As I said before this will enable you to change the text later, as well as play with the angle etc. Experiment with it! I also added some tiny text for a little extra detail. I'll be addressing tiny text at the very end of this post.
OTHER EXAMPLES Here are a few other icons using the same effect except with different textures. It also can look interesting if you use both the texture AND a shadow effect, like the very last example. Put the text over the edge of the texture and give the text and/or the texture a shadow. Or use a white text on the grey texture and then use a shadow.

NOTES Brushes seem to grow on trees these days, so you shouldn't have a problem finding them. Finding ones you can find something to do something with is a bit harder though. The same goes for brushes as with textures: there are many ways to use a brush or a brush with text, but I'm going to show you the one way I use the most.
CREATING A BRUSH After you've downloaded some brushes open them in Paint Shop Pro. As far as I know you'll have to do this one at a time, so be patient. When you have a brush selected click on the brush selector (indicated by the cursor in image one on the right). Now go to the bottom right and 'Create brush tip from selection'. It won't let you create a brush any bigger than 500x500 pixels. In the small window that appears you'll be able to name the brush and give proper credit to who made it. When you hit select you're set! You'll now always be able to select this brush from the brush selector. This way you'll also be able to make it any size or color.

STEP TWO Choose your brush. For this tutorial I'll be using the brush on the right by dearest (formerly gender). You can find the brush pack that brush is from on deviantART HERE. I already have it loaded as a brush so I can make it small enough to fit on my icon. (To do that select the TEXT TOOL again and click directly on the text you'd like to change.)
STEP THREE This is all really very straight forward and subjective. Just place the brush where you think it fits best. You don't need the entire brush on the icon, you could use just a small portion like I am here. To make the brush stand out a bit more I gave it a shadow the same way I gave the texture a shadow in Steps Five and Six of the previous tutorial. Don't be afraid to experiment with positioning. Utilize your 'Mirror', 'Flip' and 'Rotate' options. If you rotate be sure that 'All layers' is not selected, you'll only really want to rotate the brush not the entire image with it.
SIDE NOTE Remember: LAYERS ARE YOUR FRIEND. When you go to put the brush on using the Paint Brush tool create a New Raster Layer! If you don't you will paint over your background/original image and will not be able to rotate or move the brush.
STEP FOUR Now add your text. For text on brushes you'll need some of the ones that look good when small (Georgia, Stamp etc.). Like I keep saying, experiment! Try different fonts to see how they look small. Use a bold font for one large word then a smaller font for some more text below it. I added some tiny text again for detail, something I'll address at the end of the post. As with textures you can add a text shadow on the brush to add more detail and depth. Just don't overdo it, keep the opacity lower. Experiment.

-TINY TEXT. It's not really text, it just looks like it! It's basically a brush that has one or more dotted lines. Though to make those brushes people can take text and resize it till it's unreadable, those are usually the best tiny text brushes to snag. You can usually tell the difference between those and the ones people literally just made with a dotted line.

-BAD TINY TEXT BRUSHES. If you can just barely make out what it says it's not a good text brush. You don't want people to be distracted trying to figure out what the tiny text says, you want them to focus on the subject of your icon. 'Dotted line' doesn't work well either, you don't want to be able to read it but you at least want it to look like actual tiny text.

-Don't overuse tiny text! Slapping a tiny text brush on an icon to fill space can help, but not if it looks like an essay length brush.

-Decent tiny text brushes: HERE by Bourniio, HERE by MrsSpock, HERE by ShalafiRach. There are many more good tiny text brushes out there, just search for it in LJ interests or do a search at DeviantART.

-TEXT BRUSHES, JUST DON'T. It's not the same as tiny text. What is a text brush? THIS IS. I don't use them, though I used to. Beginners tend to use them before they get a handle on using text. I suggest you just keep experimenting with your own text. Taking someone else's is a bit uncreative and unoriginal. There could be fifty icons out there with the exact same text brush. That's a lot more noticable then using the same texture.

-Try mix different font types. One line of big and bold font with a line of a smaller font underneath.

-Try mixing capitalized words with lower case words.

-Again, try mixing things up. This time with colors. Do the same as the two above suggestions except make them two different complimenting colors.

-Text doesn't always need to be 100% in the icon, just so long as you can read it you're good.

-You don't always need a texture, brush or shadow to make text stand out. If you choose the right colors it could stand out for itself.

-Experiment with text position. Put it over the side of a face or even erase part of it to make it look like it's behind something.

-When in doubt ask. If you're not sure how a new font technique you're trying out is turning out ask someone what they think. Whether it's me, a LJ friend or family member. Ask them to be honest and what you could do better.

-Remember, less is more. If you're not sure the text looks good leave it off. OR make one icon with the text and one without, post both and let people decide which they like best.

Like I've said, text is only your friend if you know how to use it. While bad cropping can be made better by good contrast, coloring and text; bad text is just bad text, and bad text ruins an icon. Now, I can't teach you how to make text look good on any and every icon. I can however teach you some techniques to at least make the text readable on just about any icon. Only practice and time will help you realize what text looks good on which icon and how. Part one of the text tutorials will be addressing fonts. (Part Two will teaching four techinques to make text readable.)

As an icon maker one of the biggest things in your arsenal (besides brushes and textures) should be fonts. Don't rely strictly on the default fonts that your computer or paint shop pro has. Download new and unique fonts to really make your icons and graphics stand out. You won't need to download dozens, but a few key fonts will give your graphics a little flair.

WHERE DO I GET NEW FONTS?
Thankfully there are a number of decent sites where you can download a wide variety of free fonts. If you're looking for a font that's for a certain fandom Google "[fandom here] fonts" or "[fandom here] free fonts". Here are some major free font sites for general fonts:

HOW DO I DOWNLOAD NEW FONTS IN WINDOWS?
Never DLed a new font? Here are step-by-step instructions on how to do that (for Windows users):
1.) If you're going to be DLing a number of new fonts I suggest you make a folder for them, so they're easier to find.
2.) Click download, choose 'open' and click 'ok'.
3.) Unzip the file and move it to your new fonts folder.
4.) Go to the Start Menu and select 'Control Panel'.
5.) Choose 'Appearance and Themes'. When I do this 'Fonts' is usually an option on the left under 'See Also'. If it's not there for you do a search for 'Fonts' and you should find it.
6.) Once in your fonts folder click 'File' then 'Install New Font'. Find your folder for your downloaded fonts and select it. When you do that all the fonts in that folder will show up in that small window. You can select all of them to download or just the one you have yet to download and click. (To select multiple fonts hold down the CTRL button while you select them. To select them all hold down the Shift key and click on the first and last fonts.)

HOW DO I DOWNLOAD NEW FONTS IN WINDOWS 7?
I've just recently gotten a new laptop with Windows 7 and when I went to download all my favorite fonts I discovered an interesting dilema... there was no 'Install New Font' selection! So here's how I've been downloading and using new fonts. Basically you have to copy and past the files into the Fonts folder once you've downloaded them. Here's what I do:
1.) I download the text file using WinRAR.
2.) Once downlaoded I 'extract file' to my desktop.
3.) Once I have a few texts on my desktop I select them all, right click and hit copy.
4.) Once copied I open up Computer > Disk Drive C > Windows. I find the Fonts folder, right click on it and hit paste. The fonts should then be in your Fonts folder and ready for use!

Congrats, you have a new font to use in every application that uses fonts!

SO MANY FONTS! WHAT KIND OF FONTS SHOULD I DOWNLOAD?
Like I said, you don't need to go DLing dozens of fonts. You do however, want to have a wide variety. Different types of fonts will look better on certain icons. I'm going to try and help you cover all your bases, or at least most of them. Here is a list of different types of fonts you'll want to get and why.

NOTE ON SUGGESTIONS: Each suggestions is just that, a suggestion. It's just to help you get an idea of what I'm talking about, they are a very small number of fonts you could use. Each suggestion has a link to that font at dafont.com.

BOLD FONTS
Big and bold fonts are the sure fire way to make sure your text is readable. I suggest using bolder fonts if you're only putting one or two words on an icon. Though they're also useful in combination with other types of fonts if you want a certain word to stand out (last example).

If you haven't read my introduction to the tutorials yet I suggest you do.

You can't build a house without a solid foundation, or at least you shouldn't! The same concept goes for icons. You can't make a good icon without a solid, quality base image. That is what this tutorial will help you achieve. In this post you'll learn some beginner techniques including: brightening, sharpening and basic coloring. All using Paint Shop Pro. Yes Photoshop users, it actually is possible to make decent graphics with Paint Shop Pro.

A good base is easier to achieve with PSP than you may think. For this particular icon we're going to go very basic, just a simple base. No text, no brushes, no gradients, no textures. All coloring effects will be achieved through layers. So let's get down to business.

1.) First, it helps to start out with a decent image. Obviously. Also the bigger the image the better, because when you resize it down to 100x100 the imperfections tend to be much less obvious. Here's the image well be starting out with:

2.) Now we crop and resize to 100x100 pixels. Since we're going basic we're going to center our subject. If it looks good on the movie screen it'll look good on our icon.

Now we have this:

3.) Now for the learning experience. The following is how I achieve a brighter image with a nice contrast. Remember, layers are our friend!

Right click on the background layer and select duplicate.

NOTE: Do not right click on the actual image, right click on the layer in the layer toolbox that is shown below. This is always where you need to right click to duplicate a layer.

Now duplicate once more. You will have three layers of the same image. Leave the background image alone. Set the middle layer to 'screen' and the top layer to 'soft light'. (Again, those options are in the layers toolbox, left click on where it says 'normal' and it will give you a number of options.) I set the middle layer to 85% opacity, as I didn't want it to be too bright. (Just left click on where it says opacity and drag the arrows to the number percentage you'd like.)

NOTE: When you start experimenting with other images you may want more than one 'screen' or 'soft light' layer, or perhaps not even have one or the other. It all depends on the image you select, experiment with it. Play with the opacity. A dark base is not a good base. But a bright washed out base isn't good either.

4.) Oversharpening an icon is easy to do. If you start with a high quality image go with this rule of thumb: when in doubt don't. Looking at the icon as it stands now it's not too blurry, and it's definitely not extremely sharp. A good way to experiment with how much sharpening the icon needs is this:

Duplicate the base/background image. Sharpen only that new layer. Change the opacity until it looks just right. For this icon I set the opacity of this layer to 70%. I thought that at 100% is was borderline oversharpened, it wasn't bad but I thought I'd play it safe.

We now have this:

Not a huge change, but this was more of a way for me to show you a sharpening technique.

5.) Now for basic coloring using layers. For this icon I want to really bring out the colors, but don't want her face to get too red. If I just increased the saturation that's exactly what would happen. We don't want this poor little girl to look like an Oopma Loompa. So what do we do? Layers are our friend. Before we go further, be sure you have the top layer selected (it should be highlighted if it's selected). We do this so the layer we're about to create will appear above all the other layers.

Go to the toolbar on the very top, select 'Layers'.
Then go down to 'New Adjustment Layer', from there select 'color balance'.

Once there I set the levels to the following:
Naturally you should use your best judgement on what to set this at for other images.
Different images will have different color variations.

What does this do? Well setting it towards the Cyan helps to get rid of a lot of the redness, and putting it towards the Blue helps get rid of the yellowness. Like I said we did this so that when he increase the saturation she doesn't look too much like an Oompa Loompa.

Now we go to 'Layers' yet again.
Go down to 'New Adjustment Layer' again, this time select 'Hue/Saturation/Lightness'.

Once there I set the levels to the following:
Naturally you should use your best judgement on what to set this at for other images.
Different images will have different color variations.

What would the icon have looked like without changing the color balance and going straight to saturation? The first isn't that bad, if you like the orange hue/Oompa Loompa look.

And that's it! You now have a decent base and a few techniques (brightening, sharpening, coloring) to try out on other images.

I've been branching out a bit with what I post in this community. I've gone beyond just icons and banners and started making userinfo tables. After some thought I've decided to make some graphic tutorials as well. I've done tutorials before, but that was quite a while ago for another community. I'd like to think I've learned since then and could make better tutorials. And that's exactly what I intend to do: I will be writing a series of graphic tutorials, I hope someone gets a little something out of them!

These tutorials are for people with Paint Shop Pro. It seems so many tutorials out there are for Photoshop, which is why it took me so long to learn. I couldn't find good instruction on how to use the program I had. How can I translate a PS tutorial into a PSP tutorial if I don't know anything about my own program first?

Before we go on to the actual tutorials I wanted to start with a basic introduction to my view on icon and graphic making for those who are just starting out. Here goes. I've always been a big fan of photography and images. As they say an image is worth a thousand words. Which is what drives me to make icons the way I do, the image is the most important part of the icon. I'm not really big into very complex icons with a lot of bells, whistles and meaningless brushes. The brushes must always compliment the image, (for the most part) I feel the brush shouldn't be the central focus. (Though naturally there are artistic exceptions, and it depends on ones own personal tastes.) As you experiment with icon making just keep this in mind:

This is a form of art, and like all forms of art what makes it 'good' depends on personal tastes. Don't let elitist assholes dishearten you. I'm going to be giving you tips and suggestions, none of what I tell you should be taken as 'the one and only way' or 'the right way' to make icons. The tutorials are just step by step instructions of how I would make the icon. I'm hoping that these tutorials will help you learn new techniques, and that in learning all these new techniques you will find your own personal style.

Now, when it comes to making graphics I have certain subconscious rules for myself:

1.) Cropping is a small first step.
How you crop the image can make your icon look unique and creative... or just ridiculously amateur. Granted a bad crop can be made better by quality coloring, text and brush work. Which is why I consider it a 'small first step', but unless you're experienced I suggest focusing on cropping the image well first. Though cropping can be very subjective. A good crop to one person may be a bad crop to another. Don't let someone tell you that it's bad to center your subject, sometimes that may look bad but there are times when it may also look good. When it comes to cropping just use your best judgment and then focus on making it a quality base. Thus giving you an example of a good crop and a bad crop was difficult...

2.) Good icon base first, text and brushes later.
Text and brushes cannot save your icon if the base image is of poor quality. Your first priority when making a graphic should always be making the base look like a stand alone icon. Once this is accomplished then you can feel free to start adding text and brushes. Though in some (or many) cases you may find that once a quality base is achieved the icon may be complete!

3.) Less is more.
Text and brushes are only your friends if you know how to use them. As I said in rule two the image comes first, so don't add something when you're not sure how to do it well. It's best to have a text-less icon that looks decent, rather than an icon full of text that just doesn't look right. The same goes for brushes, you can ruin a perfectly good base with a poorly applied brush.

4.) Layers are your friend, use them!
If you put all your text and effects onto the background (aka original image) it makes it much harder to change things later on. Having each effect on a different layer can help you edit your icon and try different techniques. It also makes it easier to get rid of something you may not like, instead of hitting the 'undo' button twenty times and losing things you'd rather keep in the process of getting rid of something you don't want. It can also help you change the contrast, color balance and saturation by just changing the opacity of the layer and not redoing the entire icon. Make sense? It will once you'd experimented a bit more.

5.) If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If you find a text, brush or coloring technique that you perfect and can make decent icons with... why not stick with it? Sure, the same old thing can get boring but if you're making the icon for an icontest or LIMS competition stick with what you know! Don't go trying a new technique you have yet to get just right when you're about to be judged against other icon makers. Along the same lines: perfect a technique before moving on and trying your hand at a new one. One thing at a time. You'd be amazed what you can learn by taking it one technique and effect at a time.

I'm not great with HTML but after some experimenting and beginner tutorials I've come up with a basic userinfo table! I'm so proud of myself. Even though it's so basic I (or you) can snaz it up with userinfo banners and other graphics. Which is exactly what this post is about.

Crediting for the userinfo table code isn't necessary, but I do ask that you credit for the graphics if you use them. I wouldn't suggest editing them unless you know a bit about HTML. I have a couple more made that will match my Harry Potter userinfo banners, I'll post them soon.

Welcome to my first BSG graphic post! I have no idea why I had yet to make any Galactica related graphics, I adore this show. When I realized how close season four was and that I had no icons for the show I set out to make a couple for myself to use. I wound up making quite a few more than I had intended to and here they are! The caps are from BSG Media, and there are quite a few icons from the season four promotional image collection. There are also icons from just about every season, including Razor. (Though I don't believe there are any from season three.)
