Prompt 015.2 for lightyearsahead

2. A sentient plant that communicates with flowers.

He always liked flowers.

194 always noticed that about 146, back before they chose names for themselves. Before he was "Gary Seven" and his friend was "Septos". Before they had cats and before they had assignments meant to last more than a week. When they worked together, he would always take a moment to stop and smell them. The man was a walking proverb, a beam of warm, contented light in the shadow of the ominous and duty obsessed human. One ever dedicated to his job. The other enjoying it as he performed his work, one day at a time.

That was probably why Gary Seven wound up in the bustling, primitive metropolis of New York to keep him constantly busy. Septos was stationed on his own miniature planet, with an entire lush surface world that he could hide from the rest of the galaxy. His own giant garden to nurture and grow.

It was probably why when they first were sent to Cromwell Beta, it was Septos who noticed the little vines creeping after them first. Mr. Seven had assumed them aggressive, watching them warily and was prepared to cut them back before they began to entangle the pair. Which was what Mr. Seven expected. Instead, Septos had gently knelt beside them, ran his fingers along the petals and watched the subtle play of color on the stamen.

They were talking to them, and Mr. Seven would have destroyed them if Septos hadn't taken notice.

The Aegis had never warned them about this, and when he stooped beside of the Vulcanoid man, he couldn't help but notice a look of contentment on his face. He was noble to have spent his life serving the Aegis, because at that moment, Mr. Seven had known that it wasn't his true calling. Hands that gentle deserved to be growing the future, not roughing it into perspective.

He was glad for the chance to work alongside of him, and it was a memory that plagued him in the darker hours after seeing him broken and bloody and pleading for rescue after a Romulan's hostility. He should have spent more centuries in his garden, or on that planet talking to the growing fruit. Not blinking out there, left behind to be destroyed along with his flowers.

Character: Gary Seven
Fandom: Star Trek | Assignment: Earth
Words: 380
Notes: This is probably my shortest prompt ever, but it was intended to be introspection as part of an RP opening post. Septos is from the Star Trek novel "Assignment: Eternity"

Time Agents, the Aegis, and you...

Gary Seven and the other time agents of the Aegis are limitedly referenced in official canon (only in the episode Assignment : Earth), but frequently used in licensed work. Here is a general description of how they operate.

The Aegis: The Aegis are an extraordinarily long lived non-hominid race of shape-shifting time travellers, that move through time as humans move through space that are based off a planet some fifty-thousand light-years from Earth. In their natural form, they are gargantuan, tentacled, grub-like beings, but will appear as hominids when necessary. Average humanoids as well as twelve foot gargantuan robed figures are forms that they have notably appeared as.

The Aegis could also, hypothetically, be the cats that accompany Supervisors on their missions. Nevertheless, the Aegis have the ability to remove themselves and other people from timelines due to their own natural ability to move through it.

They are not frequently referred to by name, but are usually called "my Superiors" by any Agents or Supervisors. The Aegis rarely get involved in any matters directly, wishing to leave no evidence of their existence on the planets they become involved with, but they will occasionally work in disguise.

Not all of the Aegis share benevolent beliefs. An organization called Counter Strike works to destroy all cultures seen developing too far too quickly in much the same manner that the other Aegis use subterfuge to guide cultures to peaceful development. The work of both organizations could be seen as an effort to impede some future cataclysm tied to the Federation and a doomsday weapon.

Technology: The Aegis produce a number of computer models that facilitate teleportation through time and space, as well as the ability to monitor timelines in some capacity. Some allow provide screens or virtual reality atmospheres to allow a more intimate perspective of time. The most common model, the Beta Five, can only perceive breaks in timelines. The ones ultimately destroyed by irreparable paradoxes, however, crash in on themselves and only register as a blip on its radar. The Beta Five is also notable for it's pretentious artificial intelligence, giving it the inclination more than other models to do whatever it likes. The Beta Five can teleport small populations of people (small towns, buildings, etc.) and starships. Some computers, though, are much more powerful and capable of disguising entire planets and star systems from time and space.

Agents and Supervisors can contact their computers with a multi-functional device called a servo. The servo can function as a tool, a lockpick, a hypnotic and memory altering device, a homing device, and a communicator. This is often used in accompaniment with a computer cube, which allows the computer to remotely scan the Agent's location from it's home base.

The Aegis do, infrequently, use ships to travel from one part of the galaxy to another. A servo cannot function as more than a basic tool aboard an Aegis ship. Counter Strike possesses weapons, but the other Aegis absolutely do not and use all of their technology to conduct their work in stealth.

The Agents and Supervisors: Early in the development of many hominid races, certain individuals pop up with perfect genetic regeneration, outstanding capacity for calculative thought, and superior physical ability. The Aegis seek out these individuals and request that they help them assist in the progression of their culture into a peaceful society. Those that choose to go with the Aegis and their children and their children's children all become agents.

Because of their extensive lifespans, it takes 500 years for an agent to progress to Supervisor. The highest rank one can achieve is Senior Supervisor. Agents are typically paired together, but once they receive the promotion to Supervisor, they receive a telepathic 'cat' as a partner. The cat has been seen to morph into a hominid form, either imitating a specific race or carrying feline attributes to the form it chooses.

An Agent or Supervisor can be given a base of operations, but beyond the servo and the computer, they generally have no permanent home or possessions. They are expected to devote themselves entirely to the cause. Agents who no longer wish to participate in the Aegis's practices are free to leave, but they can not retain their memories of the Aegis or take any technology with them.

A typical humanoid, while not having the capacity of the original stock, can be permitted the ability to become an Agent and a Supervisor. They won't be imbued with the long lifespan, but if they rise to the rank of Supervisor, they will receive a cat of their own.
