BernCo Public Art: “Para La Juventud de Albuquerque” Mural Restoration

Sam Leyba, a trained muralist and active member of the Chicano Movement in New Mexico, has created public art since the 1970’s. His passion for public art led him to form the art activist group Los Artes Guadalupanos de Azatlán. Together, he and the group have painted many vibrant, powerful murals across the Southwest.

One such mural is “Para La Juventud de Albuquerque”, originally painted in 1985 and newly restored in 2025. The work was a community effort and includes ideas and imagery from the local youth.

See this beautiful and enduring piece of history in person at YDI Family Services—1710 Centro Familiar Blvd. SW, on the west side of the building.

BernCo Builds Communities: Ponderosa Place Transitional Housing Grand Opening

Bernalillo County celebrated today the opening of Ponderosa Place, which expands opportunities to move unhoused families into housing and is part of the county’s broader “BernCo Builds Communities” initiative.

The facility is a former Comfort Inn hotel at 411 McKnight Ave. NW, just west of Fourth Street and just south of Interstate 40. The county purchased the building in October for approximately $7 million. The purchase was made possible by the New Mexico Legislature and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s allocation this year of more than $110 million for housing and homelessness. The funds are being strategically deployed by the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions Office of Housing.
