Before there was TV there were books. We all know that fandom is a great place to get excited about, and discuss television. But what about books? It seems like unless a book is widely popular (Harry Potter, The Hunger Games) it just doesn’t get dissected the same way an episode of television does.

Here at beforetv, we believe that given the proper outlook, fandom can and should discuss books. Plus, let’s face it: one of the best parts about fandom is our ability to scrutinize every minute detail, to squee over every ship, to interact with other people. And that’s what we want to do here.

How it works:

1. Each month people will nominate a book that they think would make for great discussion.
2. The community will then vote on which book should be read that month (NOTE: You cannot vote for the book you nominated).
3. At the end of the month, there will be a discussion post (made by the person who nominated the book) for people to write down their thoughts, squee, excitement, disgust, etc.
4. Rinse, repeat.

Some other things:

1. If the book you nominate doesn’t get chosen, never fear! You can nominate it again next month. And hey, you’ll be introduced to a new awesome book. Win-win!
2. Participate as often or as little as you like! Don’t have time this month? Don’t like the book? No worries, join in next month.
3. Be respectful. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Maybe you hate the book. Maybe you love it. Just remember someone else nominated it, and likely loves it. Constructive discourse is key!
4. Most importantly, have fun.
