I've had these sitting on my hard drive for awhile and figured now would be a good time to post them. Nothing fancy, just some blobby textures, that I made while coloring things. All 200x200 px. Maybe someone will find them useful. I know not too many people post textures anymore.

Surprise, surprise. I'm back. I wasn't sure I ever would be but I've been feeling better lately, health-wise, and slowly getting back into some of the stuff I used to be interested in but felt too crappy to enjoy for most of last year. I've started reading again and have begun to dip my toes back into icon making. I made my first icons since 2017 for a challenge at elitesimplicity and I tried my best to enter last month's monthlyinspo but a camping trip with no internet made me miss the deadline. :(

The 100 and Wynonna Earp are still my jam but I've also binged Killing Eve, The Society and Legacies (which is suprising fun after the endless exhaustion that was The Vampire Diaries/The Originals) and really want to icon them. Also, I'm lamenting the fact that icons for The Expanse and The Magicians don't seem to exist. Where's the love for SciFi, guys?

Seriously though, ALL I did was watch tv when I was sick so there might be a sprinkling of Spanish, Turkish and Korean shows thrown in future posts too, if I can ever get around to capping some stuff. I've saved a lot of caps and downloaded a few episodes of stuff that no one seems to have caps for so I can make my own. I'm also armed with some new textures and fonts that I want to try out... all I need now is free time and a little inspiration. In the meantime, here's the crap I've made recently:

That's right kids: I'm not dead. Yet. But I've been pretty sick since the summer and I just haven't felt like iconning or doing much of anything really. (That tends to happen when you're nauseous and vomiting all the time--whoops!) I just can't get into collecting caps or textures or feel any kind of creative inspiration when I feel so shitty. I've been making icons for over a decade now. But I honestly don't know if it's something I'll ever be able to get into again even when I do feel better. But I hope so because it makes me kind of sad to just abandon something that I've enjoyed for so long now.

Anyways, here are the last icons I made during 2017 and possibly the last icons I'll ever make.

Hiatus

The time has come for my yearly spring/summer hiatus. I haven't really been around here much since early last month and I seem to have no inspiration right now. And it's been pretty dead here lately. :( So I'm taking a break to read some books and plant some things. Plus, I have a lot of social engagements coming up that I need to obsess over/stress out about. I'll probably still popping by, doing my Sad Ghost™ thing though. :)

The results of bestof_icons for 2016 were posted awhile ago but as is my way I'm just getting around to posting about the results now. Also, this is long and word-y.

Top 10 of 2016 (as voted by others):

1: This was for a circular challenge at iconsomething. I chose the texture first then the image which is the opposite of how I usually work. It was finished and submitted about 10 minutes before the submission deadline so I had to rush the coloring and keep it simple. I like it but I don't love it. But it won 1st place so I guess other people liked it. :\
2: When I claimed The 100 as my 10in30 entry I tried to make icons of all different characters. This was the last icon I made (and my fave of the batch) and I really wanted to make a Murphy icon cause I love that sarcastic lil bastard. It started out as a simple negative space icon but it was just too simple and flat. The whole thing (text, color, textures) eventually fell together quite nicely.
3: This was for a challenge at elitesimplicity featuring this palette. It was a super easy icon to make. I chose a cap with similar tones to the palette in it, amped up the coloring and contrast and rotated it slightly so the hair/lips/eyes details lined up straight down the middle and close cropped it.
4: This was a provided cap for a battle. Since the other participants would be using the same cap I had to try to make it unique. I decided to make the image smaller and use negative space against a stock background. The image was still too recognizable so I rotated it a bit. It looked sad so I added some text. :)
5: For a colorful challenge at iconsomething. I colored the cap but it looked really low quality no matter how I cropped it so I resized it and then needed a way to hide the top her hair being cut off. So I threw textures at it. All the textures. There's like 10 of them layered on there. But then I had this void of space to her right so I slapped some text on it. Voila! An icon was born.
6: I believe this was from a battle prompt that called for heavy texture use. There's a crap ton of textures used there but you can't really tell because I layered and masked the hell out of them. Only I could make an icon that calls for a lot of textures, use like 15 of them and make it look like I only used 2. Sigh.
7: I don't remember exactly what I made this for but I believe it was a provided cap. I was still getting used to using my new computer so it was a simple crop/recolor. I think the almost monochromatic coloring and pop of color keep it from being too boring. I hope.
8: A rare icon not made for a challenge comm! I was iconning The 100 and lamenting the fact that I never saw any Indra icons because she is fairly awesome. I fell in love with this cap, cropped it and spent an insane amount of time enhancing certain details like her lashes, scar and tattoo. I'm glad it got some recognition because it's a deceptively simple icon that took a lot of work.
9: Another provided cap for a battle. Again, I knew other makers would be using the same cap so I tried to make it more unique by rotating and cropping it creatively.
10: Same circular challenge as #1. I colored the cap and ended up loving the fit of the fancy texture with the fancy dress/hair. I recolored the dress to match the red background and added a grungy texture.

Overall I'm not that surprised that those icons got the most votes. Most of the icons I made last year were from battles or for challenges so I already know from previous feedback how much others liked or didn't like them. Last year was rough for me, as I suspect it was for most people. I just couldn't seem to find much inspiration so I used challenge comms to try to keep my muse alive. I feel like it worked to a degree. I've been iconning more stuff this year simply because I want to.

Anyway these were my favorite icons from last year, in no particular order:

1: I fell in love with the character of Doc after watching the 1st season of Wynonna Earp and wanted to make an icon to use myself. This was a happy accident. I couldn't recreate it if I tried. I know that after I colored the cap I used a layer with Diffuse Glow set to Hue somewhere in there. The result turned out weird and cool and I really like it.
2: This was for a grey challenge. I'd already made a few other icons for it and so I cheated and made one with a teensy bit of color. I like the vampy hair/red lip combo.
3: I made this icon to use myself. I loved Clarke's punky pink braid and messy hobo hair and decided to focus on them. The crop was a bit more unusual than what I normally go with but I think it works.
4: I really like Miller's character on The 100 and can't remember ever seeing any icons of him so I wanted to make one. It was a great cap with fantastic light already so I didn't have to do a lot of work. Still, I love the deep shadows. And those lashes!
5: This is maybe one of the most used caps in The 100 fandom but I still wanted to use it anyway because I'm stubborn like that. I tried to do something a little different with a recolor job and some textures. I just really like how all the warm colors came together.
6: One of the first icons I made at the beginning of the year. I wanted to try my hand at more unusual cropping because I felt it was a weak point for me. This was one of my first successes and inspired me to take more risks with cropping. I also love how vibrant it is, which isn't something I do a lot of.
7: I remember saving this cap because it was so powerful and dynamic but thinking at the time that it would be impossible to make a decent icon out it. It was one of the first icons I made on my new computer after a hard drive crash so I had no access to my old textures, gradients or colorings. I ended up keeping it really simple because I thought the odd angle and negative space gave it a strong look by itself.
8: This was made for a 10in30 challenge and I was trying to unify the set with a bright, colorful look. This cap was from a flashback scene with a really pale washed out tone so I had to do a ton of recoloring to get it so bright. But I just love how strong and clean it is.

So I'm pretty happy with how much better I've gotten at cropping over the last year. It's become much more natural to look at an image and see what details would make good focal points instead of just going for mid-range center crops all the time. I think I use a good mix of close, mid-range and far crops now. I also think I've gotten better or at least more broad with my coloring. It's cool that some people have a signature style of coloring that they like to use but I like to jump around and try to fit each coloring to the icon. I think I'd like to work on more complex compositions this year. Maybe try to to integrate some stock in there. And blocking. Fucking blocking. I just suck at it. As much as I love my negative space and simplicity I'd like to try to expand my skillset a bit. I'd also like to try to get better with text. Tru Fact: I attempt to put text on nearly every icon I make (probably about 75% of them really) but end up scrapping it cause it just doesn't look right. Text and I just never seem to get along though, so we'll see how that goes.

We're only 4 months into the year but I've already watched an ungodly amount of tv. I really do need to get a real life. But anyway, since I've been sick or injured quite a bit lately I've saved a ton of caps that I haven't really gotten to work on. Some shows I watched and might icon in the future: The OA, Legion, Skam, Preacher, Emerald City, Dirk Gently, The Expanse. With spring in New England it's also coming up on yard work/gardening season, so I might not have a ton of time or energy to spend online though, so don't quote me on that. And many thanks to anyone and everyone who remembered I exist here and took the time to vote for my icons. And an extra thanks to rizbef for all the work she does over at bestof_icons. Thanks guys!

I feel like this is even more of a random hodge podge than usual. There's really been no rhyme or reason to what I've iconned so far this year. Some of these are challenge entries or leftover rejects/alts from said challenges. So far 2017 has been a banner year for me health-wise. I've been sick twice and managed to injure a muscle in my back. I spent over two weeks either flat on my back in bed or sitting just-so in a chair in the corner of my living room. The good news is I really got my money's worth outta Netflix. The bad news is I really couldn't use my right arm and since I'm right handed that meant no computer. I'm mostly healthy now, so fingers crossed for the rest of the year being better for me.

Hiatus

So I seem to be having a problem with every electronic device I touch lately. Apparently, I'm some sort of one woman walking EMP. So I'm taking a bit of a break. I have neither the inspirations nor the means to make any kind of graphics right now. I'll probably still be lurking around LJ and Tumblr like some kind of sad ghost though, just to keep tabs on things. And in the meantime, I plan on drowning my sorrows in video games, Chunky Monkey and gardening like the responsible adult that I am.

These were made for personal use on various graphics, some of which I used and some I scrapped in the end. They're mostly black and white wingdings of various objects. Nothing fancy here, just stock, vectors and such that I found around the web and cleaned up and tweaked to suit my icon making purposes. I have a ton of them just sitting around in folders so I figured I might as well post them. I dunno, maybe someone will find them useful, who knows.

My old hard drive turned out to be toast and man does it suck to have to start from scratch without any of my old stuff. I lost most of my caps, textures and psds. But whatever, out with the old and all that shit. Half of these are from a challenge at 10in30 where I chose The 100 as my claim. The rest are from various icontests, as that seems to be the only thing that motivates me these days. I tried the make the whole text thing happen but I just wasn't feeling it. It seems text and I are still stuck in the 'off' phase of our on again off again relationship. Who needs text anyway. Screw text.

Same Shit, New Year

So, new year, new layout. I wanted something simple but I still don't know if I'm happy with this one. It's a pretty popular layout (called 'Peter Rabbit' by stimulus @ refutare) so I still might change it. I plan on at least tweaking the colors to my liking later on. I've posted most of my backlog of icons, some of which I've been holding onto since June. Ooops. My external harddrive died just before Thanksgiving so I lost most of my stuff. It remains to be seen whether it's fixable yet. Hopefully I'll get together some cash and find out soon. I know a guy who knows a guy who can maybe fix it. Fingers crossed. I'm basically starting over fresh. I've had to reinvent myself as far as saved inspiration, fonts and textures. I've also been making all my grahics on my Surface Pro 3, which has been a bit of a learning experience.

I'm currently working on my claim (The 100, I know, so predictable) over at 10in30 and I have a few textures that I plan to post soon. I really want to make some icons of Black Sails, Penny Dreadful, Killjoys and Mr. Robot sometime in the future if I can find the time. I really enjoyed those shows the most in 2015 and I've been sitting on caps of them for awhile now.

I rarely make icons just for the heck of it nowadays, usually they're for one challenge comm or another. These are some of my favorite challenge comms:

It seems I've completely lost any skill I had with text. I've accepted defeat and have just decided, screw it, negative space on every icon! I make most of my icons on my Surface Pro now and I still haven't quite calibrated it's settings to my liking just yet. Some of these look too sharp, others too blurry and I feel like the lighting/contrast might be wonky on some too. Eh, whatever. Some of these are from the HBIC battle charmingthrone hosted here.

The 100 icons

Obsession, who me? I don't know what you're talking about. I have been making a lot of icons of The 100 this year. These span a couple of months--some of them are from before the summer. It's such a fun show to icon and the screencaps are so easy to work with and color however you want. And there's a serious Clarke bias because I chose her as my claim for a challenge at character20n20. Some of these are from the HBIC battle charmingthrone hosted, which you can check out in full here. And some are from weekly challenges at iconsomething. Season 3 premieres soon and I feel a rewatch coming on. Which inevitably means more icons. It's a vicious cycle.

I haven't made textures in eons, well okay I haven't posted textures in eons, even though I do occasionally make them. Most of these were made while I was tinkering around making entries for contextures challenges. I have no idea if these are at all usuable but I did have fun making them, so whatever. I always have trouble figuring out when a texture is done. I have to keep reminding myself that it's not an icon and that it doesn't need more color and 12 more adjustment layers. Also, for the time being, I'm not gonna .zip these. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually but for now, fuck it, stop being so lazy and just save the ones you want. Freedom of choice, bitches!

I finally caught up with the most recent seasons of The 100, Arrow, Agents of Shield and The Blacklist so I've been iconning them a lot. And as you can see I've been very into muted coloring and negative space lately. I've also been making icons on my new Surface Pro 3 so I don't have access to a lot of textures right now so my style is a bit simpler by neccessity. I kind of like it though. Again, I'm still trying to be a little more adventurous with cropping. Only about 80% of these are mid-range center crop. Some of these were made for challenges at iconsomething and flarrow_stills.

Yeah, this is an icon dump. Random leftovers from iconflashes and the a few rounds at ic0nfest. I meant to post these ages ago but you know how it goes. Once they end up in your giant icons folder you never see them again. Or in my case, you discover them again two months later, realize you never posted them and feel like an idiot.
