Tempest's Castle

Wahey, it's a map! Kind of. :|

Tempest's castle sits on the top of a hill on clear ground, between the edge of the forest and the mountains that divide the forest and hill lands from the Earthquake Desert. The mountains themselves don't have any lower peaks; they shoot almost straight up behind the castle, into the clouds almost constantly present over them.

The castle grounds are large, taking up several smaller hills around the main one on which the castle sits. The outermost wall appears to be nothing but shrubbery, but try to enter that way and you'll find yourself held captive by plants as hard as iron until someone inside comes to tell them you're safe or a guard comes to take you to the cells. Between the shrub-walls and the outer stone wall lie Tempest's gardens. They seem to change position and content periodically, though they always conform to the cleared land between the walls. Most of the gardens are plants of varieties never seen outside of the Wood; some have plants that would be familiar to the newcomers. Only two of the gardens are unique, one being filled entirely with stone plants and sculptures, and the other being stone-tiled and full of mechanical animals and plants. The mechanical garden is guarded by its own black vine walls and inaccessible without Tempest's company or permission.

The outer courtyards are often filled with visiting natives sharing trade or gossip with the castle's long-time residents, and the ground is packed dirt and otherwise bare. The inner courtyard has clusters of comfortable furniture and braziers to keep the chill away at night, and is paved in colored marble. Even if it's raining outside the walls, it never rains in the inner courtyard.

Inside the castle proper, there are two basic types of architecture; the entrance and the older areas are all of marble and plain stonework, ornamented like some grand medieval palace. The higher or lower you go - and there seems to be far more floors than should fit inside the building - the less stonework you'll find and the more metalwork appears. There's no clear divide; one seems to grow into the other, almost as though the building was less built onto than cultivated. The highest floors are all bronze and iron, decorated with inlays of stone and silk tapestries, and most of the clockwork creatures who live inside the building can be found in those spaces. Tempest's guardians, various metal felines, patrol the entire building, but can only appear or travel through metal walls.

Residential Quarters: Also part of the old castle, and done in a sort of Byzantine style; lots of mosaic work, depicting strange machines, or the flora and fauna of the woods, or the mountains and desert beyond. The desert mosaics are populated by creatures that appear to be hybrids of insects and arachnids, overshadowed by a crumbling city of sand.

There are multiple floors to the guest quarters, and suites of various sizes on each floor. Suites are between two and five bedrooms, and each suite has a center common area with a door to the hall. Each suite is done in a theme of some kind, organic or mechanical. Whether it's one or the other depends on the wing the rooms are located in; the decorations in the hall will correspond with the themes of the rooms.

There are three halls of suites on each floor, and each hall connects to a larger a sitting room with comfortable chairs and an open fireplace. At the other end of each hall is a Roman-style restroom and bath, that is to say, toilets set over a running water source and an area with hot and cold baths large enough for a handful of guests to bathe at once. There are also steam rooms and a drying area, comprised of a raised and heated stone platform on which bathers can lay until dry.

The common rooms all have a smaller room leading off of them, with tables set up for meals; the food is refreshed morning, noon and night, and arrives from the kitchens via dumbwaiter. If your character has particular culinary needs, chances are the cooks know without having to be told. Other doors in the common areas lead to the rest of the castle.

The rest of the Castle:

Here's where things get a bit tricky. All of these areas are accessible to guests, but poke too hard - try to magic any of these areas or use tech to study them - and you'll likely get the attention of a guardian, a local, or Tempest herself.

The Library: Part of the old castle. Imagine the Beauty and the Beast library and you'll be pretty close to the size and style of the place; rolling ladders attached to every set of stacks, rows of books from floor to ceiling in some places in more languages and styles than exist in any one world. Readers are free to borrow any book they wish, as long as they let the librarian know - a persian cat who sleeps on a desk by the door. (If you wish your character to find a book that gives significant information about the Wood, please contact the mods.)

The Cells/Prison: It doesn't look like a prison. There is only one entrance, with a door that usually stands open, guarded by two bronze suits of armor. Iside is a large room with a ceiling, floor, and walls that seem to be gold or gold-plated. Into the walls and ceiling are embedded gemstones of every kind imaginable, fist-sized or larger, and impossible to pry free. Attempting it is a very bad idea. If a person were to look closely at these stones, they would see something inside each one - a person, a fairy, a monster, frozen like bugs in amber.

Indoor pool/garden: Pretty much what it says on the tin. Entrances all over the walls, leading in to smooth-paved walkways lined with plants, flowers, and fruit trees from which guests are free to eat. Spaced throughout the garden are fountains of wine with basins full of figs; there are cups placed around the rims of each fountain. Nearer the center are the pools, some clear down to the sandy bottoms and some full of multicolored fish, each connected by little streams. There are tall rocks at the edges to jump from and the waterways seem to be home to throngs of overlarge, otter-like creatures who might steal your wine cup if you don't keep an eye on it. Overhead, over the entire garden, is a skylight through which guests can see the weather of the Wood.

Clocktower: At the top of a long, winding bronze stairway, lit by torches of multicolored flame, there is a circular, roofed tower platform. There are no walls. Braziers of hot stones keep it warm, but there's nothing to stop the wind blasting over the rails at its edges. On one side, the mountains, on the other, the forest; the tower turns slowly like a giant gear, one full turn ever hour.

Tempest's lab: You won't find it unless you have permission to enter, in which case you will find it wherever you look for it. The rooms vary wildly, from metalworks to carpentry shops to set-ups that look more suited to a Frankenstein film. One thing's for certain; every room has clockwork watchers, and Tempest always knows when someone is inside.

The stable: In the gardens on the northern side; clockwork animals of every shape and size wait there, with saddles and sitting-places already built in. Guests are free to ride them throughout the gardens, or borrow them to ride through the woods to the barracks. The animals will not go anywhere but the barracks and will toss their riders immediately if forced to change direction; they will wait in the woods for those visiting the barracks to return to the castle.

Those are the major areas; there are a plethora of balconies, sitting rooms, and permanent quarters, as well as the kitchens; at the moment no one can get down there. There are also vegetable gardens, indoor hen-houses, and even fairy cattle housed inside under false suns and in small fields of golden grass. The roof, if you can find it, is strange, edible plants from end to end, though fair warning: those are Tempest's plants and can have some... interesting effects.

Questions/permissions requests involving the castle can be left here or PM'd to the mod account.

The Giving happens at random, usually when we have enough rewards to make the post worth the time it takes to make.

'Good deeds' can be anything from saving a fellow character without expectation of reward, to freeing a local from a trap, to pulling the proverbial thorn from the lion's paw. Your character does not ICly need to request anything; the tree reacts to good deeds on a purely karmic basis, and when the Giving occurs, the characters being rewarded will be drawn to their respective items without knowing why.

Thinking of a particular muse you want to bring into the game, but not sure if they'd click or not? Then this post is for you!

Don't worry - this is totally voluntary, both posting and commenting. You don't have to post here before applying, just like you don't have to have a reserve before applying. This is just a place to yak and ponder and all those other thesaurus-words that fit the bill here.

But remember...
1. Mods have the last say. Yeah, you can get a great reception for a possible character here, but this? Isn't the application page. Approval here does not automatically equal approval over there. So don't get too overly excited at your "omg new character" or too frothingly rabid about any possible plots discussed herein. We all love the new shinies, but prudence. It is your friend.
2. Don't be twats. If you don't think a particular character would fit in the game, then by all means say so! That's what this is post is about, after all - discussion. What it's not for? Is mindless flaming or being a dick. Share your reasoning (and I DISLIKE THIS CHARACTER'S FACE is not sound reasoning for a no).
3. Chill out. Don't take this personally! Just because another player says they don't think your guy would mesh well doesn't mean they hate you. Don't start crying and whining over it because hey. It's just a game.

A WILD TEXT AREA APPEARS!
<b>You:</b>

Journals

The journals are... unfortunately somewhat misleading, as they're less journals and more communicators. They have no text function - only voice and video functions - and are basically used to communicate with people across distances. Using them in the barracks a lot means you need to leave your room once and awhile. :|

They are roughly the size of a fist and look kind of like an alethiometer. When closed, they're basically no different than an average pocket watch and cannot be "accidentally turned on," so it's not likely that anyone's going to be making accidental posts. They're coal black in color and made out of an unnatural metal. While they're very technologically advanced for something out of a mystical Wood, there's also something weirdly archaic about them.

The journals have the following functions:
video and voice communications. Good for keeping track of your friends. Posts can be made public, or calls can be made directing to specific people. Every person who comes through the Arch is listed in the journal's "database." The names listed in the database are the names people identify themselves with, so if someone is using an alias, that alias will show up, instead of their real name. It's sort of a psychic thing.
goes DING when new arrivals come to the Wood. You'll know that it's a new arrival, because a new name will appear in the database.
a compass as well as a tracking device. So you can hunt down missing members of your party or find newbies who get lost in the Wood. Unfortunately, the tracking device can be tampered with easily either by the person who owns the journal or one of the residents of the Wood, so it's not always a reliable way of keeping up with your friends, especially if your friends are idiots.
basic babelfish magic. So you all can understand each other while yakking away in person or over the network.

The journals are indestructible so you can't destroy them, even if you can disable parts of it. If you try to ditch your journal, IT WILL FIND YOU. ALWAYS. They're very needy little things and there's some suggestion that they might be at least a little bit sentient, as well as inherently psychic. If you lack certain things necessary to operate these sorts of things, like hands? Don't worry. The journal will come with a collar-type attachment and be voice-activated, with that psychic bit making it so it doesn't turn on whenever your character wants to talk.

Journals can also alert you to dangerous creatures in the area, but, unfortunately, they don't often work in the darker parts of the wood (you get a lot of static) and they don't respond to stronger Fae at all.

Everyone wakes up with a journal on them when they wake up in the Arch. You will find that it's the most important part of your inventory.

back to navigation

Fairies and Magic

the magic of the wood. Babylon Wood, unsurprisingly, draws its power from stories. There is a magic in stories, which the Wood can draw on just by having people living here, playing out their stories within the Wood's realm of influence. There is also a good deal of magic in changing stories, power released when every other possible future ceases to be - and changing stories is, of course, what the Wood does best.

The magic of the Wood, at its foundation, centers on changing the reality of a thing or its seeming - it changes objects from one thing to another, but it does not create anything from thin air. Any creature of the Wood has access to the magic of the Wood, though how well they are able to use it rather depends on what they are and how long they've been here - outsiders, until they decide Babylon Wood is their home, can't use the native magic of the Wood at all.

The lowest-level magics are illusory - they may make you believe something is there that isn't, or make a thing appear as something other than what it is. These magics are easy and cheap, but also easily broken; because there's no substance to them, it's easy to see through if you know how to look. With low-level magics, you may be able to make a tree look like a person, for instance, but anyone who touches it will still feel the bark and leaves.

More powerful spells can change the physical reality of a thing, though not what it is at its core. Only the elder fae and the spirits of the Wood are able to work this kind of magic, and you'll have to bargain away something important for one of them to perform this kind of magic for you. This is the kind of magic that can bespell an object for a purpose, bring people back to life, or turn a tree into a person in fact, rather than in seeming.

The important thing to remember, though, is that when it comes to living things, even the most powerful magics can only change the physical nature of a thing - the only way magic can change the essence of a person is for that person to let themselves be changed, essentially casting a spell on themselves. So, for instance, magic may be able to make a tree into a person - but it will probably just stand there and stare at you and act like a tree. Magic can turn a person into a cat, but that cat retains the mind and feelings of a person unless they decide they are a cat in fact.

However, the longer a person remains in the Wood, the easier it becomes for the Wood and its creatures to influence them. By eating the food here, drinking the water, breathing the air, you become more and more a part of this place - and giving the things in this place more power over you. There's a reason, after all, that hardly anyone who comes to the Wood leaves unchanged.

regarding outside magics: While outsiders can't use the magic of the Wood, this does not mean that mages who come into the Wood are necessarily powerless.

Anyone with magical abilities that come from a source inside themselves will have all their abilities untouched - unless they're so powerful that the Wood itself thinks it prudent to put a damper on those abilities, as she sometimes does in extreme cases. A magic user who draws on power that comes from things found in the Wood - wind, water, rocks, trees, or life itself - will also be able to use all their abilities, with the same possible limitations if their power concerns the Wood.

However, anyone with magical abilities stemming from a magic source only found in their own universe, from gods of some kind, or any other external source not found in the Wood will find themselves entirely magic-less here.

the fairies. There are essentially two kinds of fae in the Wood: those native to the Wood, and those who came from outside and were changed.

The native fae are the oldest and most powerful, so it's probably for the best that you don't see them much. They're not rare so much as antisocial, and generally above the little concerns of outsiders and the lesser fae. Some have sentience as we know it - they talk, plan, scheme, and there are a few who delight in playing tricks on their fellows and newcomers. Others are obviously intelligent, but their ways of thinking aren't so easy for a human to grasp.

Some are spirits of the trees, water, and plenty of other things in the Wood; it may be wise to ask permission before you eat those berries or take a swim in that pond, unless you want to risk angering the spirit it belongs to. (Of course, the pond may belong to no spirit at all, in which case, you may end up feeling a bit silly.) As long as you don't disturb them and their element too much, these fae will generally leave you to your own devices.

Some, however, are not tied to any particular place or object, and are generally more animalistic, using their magic to hunt or defend themselves. They may be dangerous to the unwary, but they're not monsters, exactly - and if you kill one, prepare to face the wrath of its family.

And then there are the lesser fae - not so ancient (though certainly very old, in some cases), and not as powerful as the others, but much more noticeable, and much more of a concern to outsiders.

The minorest are small, and common: witch-lights, pixies, the spirits of flowers and other small things... They are curious and generally harmless - as much as fae ever are. Treat them right and they'll probably help you survive. Treat them cruelly, and they can be viciously and creatively vindictive.

More powerful than those are the true monsters - some former visitors, some just animals twisted in some way. They're dangerous, almost always aggressive, and can usually draw power from blood, pain, and death. Some can speak, and some can even reason and plan, but the majority of them are near-mindless, and all are more or less impossible to reason with - though you're welcome to try.

The last, most powerful, and most tied to the Wood itself, are the non-natives, once-outsiders who stayed long enough that their essence changed, and they became more like their hosts than the people of their homeland. Most look human (though plenty are shapechangers, and have a second form as an animal), and most even act human, but none of them would quite qualify anymore. They have their own politics and power struggles, and there's an old tradition of using outsiders as pawns in those games. There are also fae sympathetic to outsiders, who will offer aid if they can - but good luck sorting out one group from the other.

For all fairies, their word is their bond - and they're bound to the word of a deal, not the spirit, so semantics are very important. They're not vulnerable to iron, like in the stories of many universes, but they can be injured, and killed - though the more powerful the fae, the more it takes to hurt them, and the more easily they can heal themselves.

Magic is the most surefire weapon against them - that, and cleverness. Fairies are not above violence, but it is not the first line of attack or defense for them - it's considered a last resort, and rather gauche. Because of this, you could probably take them by surprise at least once with an attack of brute strength, but they're far less likely to come seeking revenge later if you beat them with cleverness instead.

back to navigation

There are a few events in the Wood that will repeat periodically - or randomly. They'll be added to this page when they first come up.

the carnival.
One night of every month - when the moon is full, because that’s when magic is at its strongest, you know - if you go into the wood, you’ll hear the tinkling of bells and a children’s chorus singing a haunting melody. Fairy lights guide your way through the forest, beckoning you forward, and if you choose to follow the path, you’ll find yourself at the Carnival.

It’s an ordinary carnival, at first glance - though very old-fashioned and archaic. The more modern types might look on in nervousness at the giant wooden ferris wheel and old-fashioned rides, including a beautiful carousel with mythical creatures instead of horses. There are games, tents where performers will treat you to great feats of magic, treats, an area for dancing, and even a bar, and while you might be wary of the beauty and gaiety of it all, the longer the stay, the more you lose yourself to the fun and mischief.

The Carnival’s Mistress is The Kitsune Girl, otherwise known as Kitsune. A very powerful Fae, she can give you what you most desire... but her prices are unimaginably high, and the more you study the Carnival, the more you might notice what those prices might be. Maybe it’s the fact that the barmaid smiles a little too much and can’t seem to recall a thing about herself... Maybe it’s the fact that the carnies all seem to be a little too preoccupied to answer questions and brush you off with a grin and a wave towards the next booth. Or maybe it’s the fact that any direct questions about the Wood itself, directed at Kitsune, turn the fun-loving, flamboyant Fae into a raging force of nature. Be wary around Kitsune - she’s full of mischief and laughter, but once she has her claws in you, you may find yourself in her thrall, and it’s very hard to get out of once you’re in it. She has a connection to the Wood that she won’t speak of, and anyone who tries to force it out of her will incur her wrath.

But oh, it might take several months before you catch onto the darkness within the Carnival - after all, Kitsune only comes to town once a month, and after she’s gone, you find your memories of the Carnival are fuzzy at best. You only know that the next time you hear those bells, you’ll want to go again until the lure is irresistible. Only the strongest will resist the lure and get to the heart of the matter and even then, the Kitsune Girl is well protected.

Enter The Man With the White Eyes. When the Carnival is in full swing, he’s a flamboyant blind gypsy man - a conjurer, a fortuneteller, and a showman of the highest caliber. When he gets onstage, your eyes are all on him. He’s Kitsune’s right hand and her enforcer, and while not nearly as powerful as she is, he’s still powerful in his own right, and getting on his bad side might result in a few nasty curses thrown your way. Oh, he’s more than willing to release you from them.... when the Carnival comes to town next time.

Just under those two are the Mockingbird Choir, a trio of three children (two girls and a boy) - identical down to their matching Harlequin outfits. They’re Vaudeville performers, and while cute little pixies at first glance, they, like everything else at the Carnival, suggest darker things. Plus, they’re creepy identical children. There’s always something wrong with creepy children.

Keep on your guard when the Carnival rolls in - they can save you from your story, if you’ll let them, but their price is much more than you’ll ever want to pay.

the winter gala.
Hosted by the enigmatic Princess of Storms, the Winter Gala only happens once a year, when the whole of the Wood goes cold and snow fills every corner, however briefly. It's one of the grandest events that the fae indulge in, greater and lesser beings mingling freely with enough food (and drink) to make even the most miserly a little bit sociable. The Gala goes on for two weeks, with balls, feasts, contests, parties, and... other events.

Catch the Princess's eye, and you might even earn a place in her Court. Should you be inclined to accept.

back to navigation

<blink>DON’T BE A DICK.</blink>
Seriously. The mods don’t approve of dickery in any fashion. BE NICE TO OTHER PLAYERS. If we watch you bullying or making other players uncomfortable, you will get one warning and that’s it. We have a zero tolerance policy for people who think they can act like douches. One of your mods plays the Trickster. She will throw down.

ICA =/= OOC
A character's actions, thoughts, and intentions should not reflect the player's own. Please keep this in mind when interpreting other characters' actions as well. If Character A hates Character B, then it doesn’t mean Mun A hates Mun B.

Godmoding, Infomoding, and Fourthwalling
- Godmoding: The manipulation of someone's character without allowing them a window of escape, or abusing the window of escape to prevent your character from receiving any damage whatsoever.
- Infomoding: The use of out-of-character knowledge in an in-character situation.
- Fourthwalling: ICly making the connection that another character's existence is fictional.

ALL OF THESE ARE INCORRECT. ….Well, except for the fourthwalling, but fourthwalling is on a case-by-case basis. If you’re gonna fourth wall someone, ask the mun of the character first.
Infomodding is especially not tolerated here, because occasionally mods will give information about plots/characters at the beginnings of plots. It’s impossible for any character to ~magically figure out~ a lot of things about the Wood, so please don’t do it. There’s a reason why we keep a lot of the plot details and information about the Wood a secret - we want the characters (and the players) to be surprised as the plot unfolds.

Activity
Activity checks will be held once a month, and they’ll be done by the mods, because we’re neurotic - although this is why it’s very important that you use your tags in all comms, because... that’s how we check. You must post or comment to one log to pass an activity check. That log doesn't have to be complete when we run the check, but if we notice you're dropping a ton of logs after only a few tags, we're going to have to chat.
Activity on the journals does not count when we check for activity - though you should still use your tags there, too.

Characters
Both fandom and original characters are allowed, as well as AU fandom characters. However, apps for original characters and fandom AUs are going to be a hell of a lot stricter, and we ask that you give us more detail both in their backgrounds and their personalities. No real people are allowed.

Warnings
As you are dealing with mods who enjoy torture and violence, we’re going to allow you to go hog wild as far as that’s concerned. We also allow sexual situations, and while we prefer fade to black, if you need to write explicit sex, please put warnings on it. If all you’re posting are sex logs, then you will be contacted by the mods.

PLEASE PUT WARNINGS ON ANYTHING THAT MIGHT BE TRIGGERING. Also be sure to use lj-cuts if the explicit material is in the main post, rather than the comments. Our definition of triggering material includes torture, gruesome violence, animal abuse, rape, non-con, etc. Failure to warn for explicit content will be dealt with.

Plotting
All plots that affect several characters must be posted to the OOC community, and any major plot must be approved by the mods. As the setting is limited and the NPCs will likely react to any major disturbances, the mods have to plan out how best to deal with situations as far as the Wood is concerned - plus, plotting in the OOC community allows people who might not be comfortable in chat to get in on the plotting.

If you have a small minor plot that might still make the NPCs/the Wood angry, please consult a mod.

back to navigation

Challenge apps are not allowed.

- Please limit yourself to only one accepted app per round. You’re allowed up to 5 characters in-game; HOWEVER, if your other characters are not reasonably meeting activity requirements, you’ll be asked to prove you’re active with them before your app will be considered.

- Please approach the application as though the mods have no knowledge of the canon, even if the canon is hugely popular.

- When submitting an app, whether by linking to your journal or posting in the comments, please post your character’s full name and fandom in the subject line.

- We allow recycled apps. Samples don't have to be fresh or even related to the game. Linked entries from dear_mun or previous games are acceptable. We just ask that if you take your sample from a log tag of appropriate length that you link to the original thread for context, and that the samples be less than six months old.

- If your application is rejected, any attempt at resubmission will have to wait until the next app period for consideration.

- If you're asked to provide revisions, you will have one week to do so before your application is rejected. At that point you will have to wait one month to reapply for that character.

- For an example of what we're looking for in a canon character application, go here. For an example of what we're looking for in a canon character application, go here.

Application
<big><b>The Player</b></big>
<b>User Name/Nick:</b>
<b>User LJ:</b> [You can put N/A here, if you’d prefer not disclose it.]
<b>AIM/IM:</b>
<b>E-mail:</b>
<b>Other Characters:</b>

<big><b>The Character</b></big>
<b>Character Name:</b>
<b>Character Journal:</b>
<b>Canon:</b>
<b>Age:</b>
<b>From When?:</b> [Canon point. Keep in mind that, given the nature of the game, characters should come from RIGHT BEFORE a major event in their life - remember the point of the Wood is that they’re trying to change a character’s future.]

<b>Abilities/Powers:</b> [A FULL listing of your character’s abilities, both mundane and magical/psychic/whatever - be as detailed as possible.]
<b>Power Limitations:</b> [How you plan to limit your character’s abilities while they’re in the Wood - you don’t have to take everything away (or anything, if the powers aren’t particularly overpowered or destructive), but the Wood won’t let you, say, bend her reality or take huge chunks out of her with the sound of your voice.

Likewise, if you need your character to be slightly sized up or down for ease or practicality. This is only applicable to the very large or very small - for example, elephant-sized for something giant like a dragon, or child-sized for something small like a mouse. It's not necessary, but an open option.]
<b>Inventory</b> [Please list everything that your character will have on them on their arrival- whatever was on their person at the exact moment they were taken should be the only things listed here. This includes the clothes on their backs and any weapons/supplies. There is no limit on the amount of items that can be included in a character's inventory. Some video game characters have hammerspace talents, and others are just obscenely prepared.]

<b>Personality:</b> [Please be as detailed as possible. A minimum of five hundred words. Also, please emphasize any fears, insecurities, inner demons, etc. This will help the mods in events that deal with screwing with the cast’s mind.]

<b>History:</b> [Write the history as if explaining it to someone completely unfamiliar with the canon. Define terms, explain important background information, et cetera. Original characters will most definitely need to go into further detail as they'll be held to a higher standard than canon characters.]

<b>First Person Sample:</b> [5-10 Sentences]
<b>Prose Sample:</b> [3-5 paragraphs, 3rd Person POV]

<b>Special Notes:</b> [Please use this section in particular to include information about the world of an OC.]

back to navigation

She's kind of a snarky bitch, but what cat isn't? If you can get past the snark, she's incredibly helpful to know. She has no special powers - except those every cat has - but she can offer more than a century's worth of knowledge about Babylon Wood and its inhabitants. However, she'll rarely tell you anything straight out - it may be that she can't, only offering hints and leading you to conclusions as best she can.

Equipped with a ninth leg designed as a lure, they attempt to bring their prey in close and attack. The ninth leg looks like a human, and reflects the sex and age of the beast in question. They also have hallucinogenic or paralytic venom that can be absorbed through the skin. They can be killed, and aren’t particularly invulnerable. Get them through the mouth or eyes and they’ll go down fast. That said, they usually keep their eyes shut when they’re on the attack and hunt by scent and vibration. Vision is a last resort and their eyelids are extremely thick and protective. They travel and hunt in family groups, and are extremely protective of their own.

She can offer almost anything to those willing to pay the price. And the bigger the prize, the more vicious the toll. The only certainty with Kitsune is that she's stronger than she looks - and she's hiding more than your life is worth on its best day.

Sentient, irritable, savage, and inclined to eat whomever appears on its shores, there's a reason helpful fae have posted signs all around it reading 'Warning: don't break the surface'.

Of course, that was when visitors to the Wood were common. Most of the signs are either gone or so worn down that only select words are readable. 'Break' and 'surface' being two of them.

According to Lore, she sewed the wailing bodies to the first Criers herself. She resembles a cross between a scorpion, a spider and a serpent; her main body is that of a scorpion, while a snake’s body and tail sprout from just under her torso. She’s capable of both walking or, at need, lifting her scorpion-body free of the ground and slithering with terrible speed. As a result, she has two tails - one topped with a scorpion’s stinger, the other, a silent snake’s rattle.

The ‘stinger’ of the scorpion’s tail actually produces a thick, thread-like substance; her scorpion legs are viciously sharp. She employs them as living needles, a sort of nightmare sewing machine. To catch her prey, she poisons a weaker creature and then sews it to her serpent tail, binding its mouth shut with her thread. She then allows the body to try to drag itself to help. When someone comes to investigate, she attacks and feeds on the victim. She prefers to capture prey in pairs so that she can always have one to use as a lure for later.

Once a powerful member of a fairy court, she fell in love with a married mortal and ruined her reputation in pursuit of him. When he refused to be her lover, she took the form of the man’s child, acting innocent when he was around and torturing his wife when he was not. At night she came to him in her true form to try and seduce him.

Eventually his wife killed herself. Stricken with grief, the man fled into the Wood and vanished. Miranda kept the child’s form, and has since plagued the wood, torturing and driving mad any she comes across. She has no grander motives, no deeper desires - she simply wants all who come to the Wood to realize the futility of their situation. To give up and die.

nomee.
Pronounced "No, me." This Nymph - more specifically, Naiad - lives in the Amaranth Stream and regularly emerges to steal things from people around the barracks. Distract her with something shiny and you can usually get your belongings back without much trouble - or trade her something shiny and you'll get them back without any trouble at all. Even those things that end up in the bottom of her stream won't be damaged; if and when she returns them, they're always completely dry and unharmed.

She's a very minor spirit of the Wood, but still has enough juice to turn soft ground to mud, create small, temporary springs, and heal those who enter her stream if she feels so inclined.

the pixies and the trolls.
Mortal enemies, the pixies and trolls engage in regular and semiharmless bouts for control of their respective territories. The pixies are a bit airheaded, not unhelpful if approached the right way, and prone to random acts of tiny violence if provoked. The trolls are large, stupid, cat-headed, and extremely powerful - and also given to marveling at the simplest of tricks. All in all, not the biggest threat the Wood has to offer.

the shades.
The Shades are the memories of former Wood-dwellers, left behind in places of great joy or sadness. Given life and substance by the Wood, they’re trapped in a single moment, living out the script of their memory over and over again. If you happen along during one of these 'plays', they will incorporate you into it and expect you to play along. If you don't, they turn violent fast, and only become corporeal enough to fight at the height of the memory’s most severe emotions.

They feed off the fear and pain of their victims, not the flesh - though a little meat every once in a while is tasty enough that nutritional value doesn't really matter. They can shapeshift, though they generally bastardize the form of whatever animal they take. And only the more powerful fae in the Wood stand a chance of killing them.

Psychic and cruel, they have an ability to bind a person’s spirit with thorny, incorporeal vines. Escape is possible, but you have to tear yourself free--and leave a portion of your spirit behind in the process.

the wanderers.
A traveling troupe of merchant fae, these oversized animals are generally helpful. Generally. While they'll trade you all manner of useful things should you happen to run into them, they don't trade in coin - they trade in value. Whatever you want, you must part with something of equal worth.

And one of their number has a habit of trying to kidnap and sell people.

white eyes.
A shapeshifter, The Man With The White Eyes can appear in any form he wishes, male or female, human or animal. Masculinity happens to be his default form - though few have ever seen it. The only way to tell it's him is by his eyes. No matter his shape, his eyes are the same - white, with a hint of oil-slick rainbows.

He's Kitsune's loyal servant, and while he has his own preferred types and motives, one of his primary goals is helping create a need for Kitsune herself to fill. He does have the unfortunate habit of turning people into those animals they most resemble, if they cross him.

Setting

The Wood itself is massive, and may very well go on forever. Don't bother trying to find your way out of it - you won't succeed, and you'll probably just get lost and then dead.

Most of the forest itself is made up of pine and fir trees, though it's possible to find almost any species of tree that will grow in a northern continental climate - including some kinds of trees not found on Earth. It is very dense, the trees so close together in some places that it's impossible to see the sky through the branches. The effect is one of near-perpetual twilight, except in those places where clearings or buildings allow the sun to break through.

Even setting aside the trees, the landscape is not featureless. While there's plenty of relatively flat ground, there are also hills, valleys and caves throughout the Wood. Be careful about poking your head into any of those caves, though - they may already be occupied, and if they are, better hope it's a wild animal, because the other possibilities are worse.

The weather is volatile, and doesn't follow any reasonable pattern of seasons - it can go from snow to clear skies and sun to violent thunderstorms in the course of a few days. This is not the way things were meant to be, but the Wood's been out of balance for some time now, and you may as well get used to it.

Locations
the barracks. A sort of medieval fort, built all of wood, surrounded by high stone walls. Calling it the barracks might be a bit of an understatement, as it's less a set of barracks and more of a creepy, abandoned town. Most buildings are damaged to some extent - doors and windows won't close right, there are cracks and chinks in walls, some ceilings may be falling in - and almost all are full of dust and vermin. It will provide more shelter and safety than staying out in the open forest, but it probably won't be terribly comfortable at first. And now look! A map!

It's very old fashioned, and looks almost like a ghost town in the middle of the Wood. There's a general store (now empty and abandoned- the shelves are covered in nothing but dust and broken jars- it's pretty useless as anything right now, because there's no way to stock it), a pub (with a few mysterious bottles of liquor still tucked away in the back - drink if you dare- but also empty and dilapidated), a forge (one of the few things that can be made functional with a little work), and a few other unrecognizable buildings that have fallen into such disrepair they're more creepy than useful.

And, of course, there's the barracks, themselves - a seemingly endless set of small cabins that have old-fashioned wood-burning stoves (think colonial times) and very little in the way of comfortable amenities. There are beds, a table, and a few chairs and each one can house three people comfortably. Most have braziers as well, standing or hanging, though not all--they've vanished or been taken to pieces in the interim since the buildings were inhabited. There seems to be no limit to how many cabins there are, even though they don't seem to take up much space. There's also a storehouse that is the only thing that seems to still be operational, as you will find a supply of meat and fresh harvested vegetables in there every month. However, it doesn't get replenished until the end of the month, so make sure to ration the food wisely or you'll find yourself having to go into the Wood to hunt and gather until it fills up again - and you'll never know exactly who is providing the food even if you stake the place out. You'll always fall asleep at the most inopportune time.

The centerpiece is a very small library-ish building, which has been completely destroyed inside, its shelves upturned and broken - you'll find all of the books have the endings torn out of them (you'll also notice that no books about the Wood itself seem to be present - in fact, they're all classic stories from Earth and various other worlds - chances are if your culture has a famous story or two, a copy of it exists in the library and is damaged beyond repair, unless it's your story). The library also has a mural of a large group of people standing together in front of the library back when it was still new. That mural is the only clue you have to the people who once lived in this town. There's no indication of what happened to them anywhere.

The only tree inside the walls is tucked behind the library, an ancient oak tree with healthy, bright green leaves, in sharp contrast to the general dilapidation of the rest of the complex.

the castle. It seems to be the only place, aside from the barracks, that's remotely hospitable to newcomers; a detailed description and not-so-detailed map can be found here.

the giving tree. The only tree inside the walls of the barracks. An ancient oak, vibrant and healthy. Some might find, tucked away in its roots, articles from home that they thought lost. They could be as significant as a magical power source or as mundane as a favorite pair of socks - whatever the article is, however, it has an odd habit of appearing only after a good deed is done, and even then only at a certain time of month. If someone else tries to take said item, the roots of the Giving Tree will close up around it until the proper owner appears.

the church crypt. In a building that was once a church before being nearly destroyed, behind a stone door hidden in the back wall, there's a stairway down into the earth that's lit by nothing you can see. At its base is a stone foyer, the walls made of jagged rock and the floor polished smooth. The door at the opposite end is deteriorating, showing signs of wear and possible termite infestation and the hinges are rusted nearly through. Should you open it - and not run at the floodtide of death-scent and insects - you'll find a crypt beyond. Once organized, it's now a nightmare scene of stacked skeletons in rotting clothes. The bodies inside have no identifications. But many have broken necks.

the hanging tree. About a mile east of the barracks is a clearing in the wood with a huge gnarled and dead old tree. The grass around the tree is dead and barren, even though everything outside a twenty foot radius is flourishing fine. When you step into the patch of dead grass around it, you'll feel the air get a little bit colder. Something bad happened here. Maybe several something bads, and if the chill didn't scare you - the sight of the frayed and rotting noose dangling from one of the high branches will.

There's also a series of hatch marks carved carelessly into the side of the tree, growing steadily deeper and more hastily carved the longer they go. There's at least twenty marks there. Beyond being creepy, the tree really isn't that interesting, but it might be a clue to something bigger.

the amaranth stream. Just outside of the barracks' southern wall, almost snugged against the wall itself, a lively spring surges out of a small, dark cluster of stones. It's surrounded on all sides by heavy, perpetually-blooming maroon flowers. The stream is always cold and clean. Along the bottom of the stream, there's a multitude of random objects, from buttons to bars of gold. Those who dive in trying to reach them will find the stream far, far deeper than it looks--and getting deeper the longer they swim downward. The spring's guardian is somewhat possessive of her trinkets.

the dark woods. The entire Wood is dangerous in its own way, but if you wander into the darker parts of the Wood where the sun never touches, you're inviting your own end. Here, the monsters roam freely, and some of the most feral Fae prey indiscriminately on anyone who dares enter. Here you'll find criers' webs with rotting half-eaten carcasses of dead animals still stuck tight, caves where you could be faced with your worst nightmares if you try to take sanctuary in them, and the Magpie's nest - a long section of dark woods filled with nothing but cages of petrified creatures, their bodies arched and contorted in throes of ecstasy for all eternity. Be wary when you wander the dark woods, as you might become the next victim to these creatures.

the dreaming trees. A grove of white-barked trees deep in the Wood, far older than anything else here. Some of the biggest trees are twenty feet around and hundreds of feet high, and the grove is often shrouded in mist. To all outward appearances, it's a peaceful place, often completely silent, giving the air of a temple... or a tomb.

To anyone with psychic abilities, though, it's not so quiet. To psychic senses, there is a constant soft whispering all around, coming from the trees themselves. It's possible to pick out a few words or phrases sometimes, though whether or not you can make sense of it is another matter.

the arch. A simple free-standing arch built of strange, white stone, nestled among the Dreaming Trees. Once, this was the place where people entered the Wood, and where they returned to their own universes. Today, the arch is broken - it's still standing, but there's a big crack through the top of it, and nothing anyone does can make it work the way it's supposed to. Inscribed in the stones, from one end of the arch to the other, there is a poem. It may or may not mean anything important.

back to navigation

Say the words and we'll begin...

Under the Arch in the heart of the Babylon Wood, something happened that hadn’t for a century or more; people from other worlds began appearing. With the Arch as their locus, these small groups tried to figure why they were there and who had brought them, as well as the significance of the landmarks where they had been placed. Some had more to go on than others. All were unpleasantly surprised when, after lingering at their point of arrival for almost a day, they were assaulted by a series of monsters or accosted by locals - and just before the situation became dire, they found themselves somewhere new again, outside the walls of the dilapidated barracks.

The first Carnival showed up while they were still reeling from the shock of arrival and the spate of curious locals who appeared as the newcomers tried to settle in, and the strangeness didn’t stop there. As the Wood’s new residents explored their surroundings, discovering the grisly leavings of the barracks’ former inhabitants, the Wood itself had another surprise in store. A tremor of power announced the arrival of a sequence of B-movie horrors that plagued the barracks’ residents for almost a month before finally being put to rest.

Now, as Winter starts to be felt in all areas of the landscape, there’s a new fae making herself known. The Princess of Storms is having a celebration, and everyone is invited to attend. Whether they all decide to leave at the end is another question entirely.

back to navigation

Game Questions
How does my character arrive in the Wood?
Your character will simply feel a falling a sensation just as they were about to take a step towards whatever path the Wood is trying to stray them from. It’s like you tripped and fell forever and kinda blacked out halfway before the ground. When you wake up, your character will find themselves staring up at the sky above a treeline in front of an arch.

What is the Arch?
The Arch is the gateway between other worlds and the Wood. It’s broken.

So how does my character arrive in the Wood, if it’s broken?
Okay, it only goes one way - in. If you walk around the Arch - poke it, lick it, kick it... You’re not gonna get anywhere and will probably have a sore foot. It’s not recommended that you kick the Arch.

What does my character get on arrival?
They will have the clothes and whatever possessions/weapons they had on them before they arrived, plus a communicator that just magically appears on their person for some reason - it looks like an aleithometer (it’s not). The communicator has a voice/video posting function, a compass, and a tracking device where you can always find another character.

Wait! What if I don’t want my character to be found?
No problem. The tracking devices are easily disabled. They’re mostly for picking up newbies and chasing down your dumbass friends who run off into the Wood and weren’t smart enough to disable their own tracking devices.

So how do the journals work?
Through magic. Basically they are the bit of futuristic tech in the Wood, but even having video/voice functions, they still look a little archaic. Also, there are some parts of the Wood, where you might not get signal.

Like where?
Don’t worry. We’ll tell you. :3

Where will my character live?
For the first couple of in-game weeks, characters will have to live off the land. There will eventually be barracks and places for them to stay and work, but the first mission will be to find it. There will be a section about the barracks added when they’re found.

What about food?
You will have to forage your own food. And take to the hills and slaughter a deer.

What if my character is incapable of slaughtering a deer?
That’s what your new friends are for. Learn the value of teamwork, you yuppie.

But seriously... Deer?
Okay, seriously. Sometimes nice fairies will leave out food for you, free of any obligation, but if you have people who are paranoid against fairies in your group, you might have a hard time getting any.

Can my character die?
Yes. And death is permanent in the Wood, unless another character strikes of a bargain with one of the more powerful Fae- and it will be of great cost to them. Bear in mind that you cannot kill your character and expect someone to just step up and accept the price to bring them back. The death of a character and their subsequent resurrection must be talked through by both muns and the mods.

So... What about those Fae?
Check the NPC list. Those are the most important Fae you need to know, with more to be added as the game progresses.

How does magic work in the Wood?
There's a whole post on this. Go nuts.

What is the Wood anyway?
Never ask that question.

But I want to kno-
NEVER ASK THAT QUESTION.

How does time work?
Wibbly. Technically one day in RL = one day in game, but you can always backdate stuff. We’re not really running a tight ship unless it’s a Carnival night, which ALWAYS happen on nights with a full moon.

Carnival?
Yes. Carnival.

Is there an activity check?
Yes. And this will be edited when we agree on this.

Where will the majority of activity be posted?
Honestly, since the mods are big prose writers, we’d PREFER if most stuff be regulated to the logs comm, since characters will be in the same place and it’s rather silly to constantly be chatting on the journals.

Is actionspam allowed in the logs comm?
Yes, but be courteous. If the log is in prose form, don’t jump in with actionspam. If the log is actionspam, don’t jump in with prose. Like I said, we prefer prose, but we understand how some people don’t like it.

What is the acceptable format for prose logs?
Third person, present tense is our favorite, but we won’t gut you and leave your corpse for the wolves if you want to do past tense - see above about being courteous, however.

Okay, so how does the game actually work?
Like your basic video game RPG - certain areas will be unlocked with “quests” that can be taken by all the characters in the game or just a few. The more quests you go on and the more you learn and discover, the deeper you get into the plot.

So this game follows a pretty strict plot format?
No. You can shape the plot on your own, but there is an endgame involved, that the game will eventually reach when the mods feel the time is right. Also, CR will be important too. You won’t always be questing and such - it’s a game about survival and camaraderie. And possibly stabbing each other in the back. Fun!

How are quests set up?
Information posts will be provided in the OOC comm by the mods - teams will be selected on a first come, first serve basis, although if your character has been getting ALL THE QUESTS lately, you may be asked to sit out and let someone else be awesome for once.

Are the mods seriously running this like an actual tabletop?
.....No.

*hides the d20*

Character Questions
What sorts of characters are allowed?
Any character from any fictional media, as well as original characters. Alternate universe versions of canon characters are also acceptable. Keep in mind that you will be asked to be extremely thorough on all alternate universe and original character apps - moreso than regular apps.

Player-based protagonist characters are also allowed (i.e. Persona, Dragon Age, etc.), so long as personality and history don't contradict concrete canon as revealed in gameplay. By the same handwave, minor characters with no discernible histories (vague mentions in books, or one episode of a show) who are basically glorified OCs will fly too.

Fandom-based original characters are also go so long as the latter is not a lynchpin of the fandom's main plotlines and have no direct interaction with the main characters. For example, a random ex-browncoat with his/her own ship from Firefly is fine; a random ex-browncoat who's always been part of or later joins Malcolm's crew aboard Serenity is not.

Real people cannot be apped. Sadly, Jon Stewart will not be doing snarky reports on the latest happenings in the Wood from the barracks via journal. However, real people in fictional contexts (John Adams from 1776, or John Wilkes Booth from Assassins) are most certainly open to be played.

Can I app a character native to the Wood?
Sadly, no. Only the mods know the secrets of the Wood.

Is there a character limit?
Officially, you may have five characters in play at once. However, even if you have less characters but we've noticed you're having problems with activity, you won't be allowed to app another until we're sure you can handle the ones you have.

Can I play more than one character from a canon?
Only if they’re not closely related. You cannot play Daryl and his other brother Daryl. For the sake of fairness (unless the series as a huge cast and spans ages like Doctor Who or Star Trek), we’ll say you can only have two characters from one fandom.

Can I bring in a character with CR/development from another game?
Nope. The point of the game is that the character is being brought in before a moment IN THEIR OWN CANON that would change their lives.

So canon points have to be pretty specific, huh?
Not exactly. If you were to app Dean Winchester, you could app him before he sells his soul to save his brother or you could app him before he ends up in Hell or you could app him before any other major turning point - the point is that the canon point needs to be a moment where, if averted, the character’s life would’ve gone in a completely different direction. It doesn’t even have to be a big thing.

What happens if my character pokes the Wood?
Bad things.

What sort of bad things?
.....Don’t poke the Wood, okay?

BUT IT’S SO SHINY.
DAMMIT. I SAID NOT TO PO- Okay. If you poke the Wood, odds are you’re either going to get angry sprites throwing shit at your head or monsters coming to eat your face. It depends on how bad you make the Wood angry.

You wouldn’t like her when she’s angry.

Also, she might punish the entire barracks if you’re consistently dumb by doing ridiculous crap like turning everyone into animals or making everyone act like teenagers or something. She has this power.

So my character is a totally awesome powerful creature/god/human/unicorn/dogmonster. What will happen to them in the Wood?
They will be significantly depowered - the application goes into that in more detail.

What happens to dropped characters?
The Wood eats them.

Really?
Yes. Really.

Can they be picked up again by another person?
Yep. And even from a different canon point. The Wood cares not.

What if I reapp a character I've dropped? Will they remember or will it be a fresh slate?
Whichever you'd like! You can have your character go all amnesia on their friends, you can have them not remember leaving at all and wonder what's up with everyone else in their grill about it, or you can have them sloooooowly recall their prior Wood happenings. Up to you. Just no canon updates.

So we can’t canon update in this game?
What did we just say? No. The point is steering characters from a path. If they’re still following that path, then the Wood wouldn’t have a point, would she? If your character is from an ongoing canon and new information is revealed re: their history or background, you can incorporate that information as technically your character has/had always known that/been that. If it's superbly life- and/or game-changing information, the mods would like a heads-up about it, though. We like knowing things.

Does my character have to steer from that point?
Nope! That’s just what the Wood and everyone else wants.

Player Questions
Can I reserve a character?
The reserves page is here. You don't have to reserve a character before apping them, but since we don't allow app challenges, you may want to.

When are applications accepted?
Applications open on the first of the month and close midnight of the fifteenth. Barring any apocalyptic type shenanigans, acceptances and opening events for new characters should go up some time on the fifteenth. However, mods are known to live on Helmouths, so sometimes it gets tricksy.

What is the game’s set end date?
We’ll slowly reveal that as the game draws to a close. The point is the build-up.

So OOC-ly, the players aren’t allowed to know any of the mysteries?
Nope. And the mods won’t tell you, either, so don’t ask. NO SPOILERS.

Are quests/events mandatory?
Some might be, but most things are opt-in, only. However, if we find you’re sitting out on too many major events, we might doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion and poke you gently.

So say I’m a new player and this game has been going on for awhile. How do I know what’s happened?
A summary post will be posted at the end of each month by one of the mods, detailing any changes made to the game setting and new developments plot-wise. New additions will always be added to the info pages, as well.

What if I have a problem with another player?
Take it to the player first. The mods are not your mommies.

They are your overlords.

Who the Hell is Seanan McGuire?
This lady, and our Lord and Master and Patron Saint. She inspired this RP. Also, if you go to her songbook and pick out a pretty lyric to put at the top of your app, we’ll know you read these FAQs.

WAIT. ALL OF THIS IS CONFUSING. I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS. LOUD NOISES.
You can ask down in the comments to this post. :D One of your lovely mods will get back to you.

back to navigation

Babylon Wood is something of a fairy tale. Outside of time and between universes, it is ancient and timeless... and sentient. It's an incredibly magical place, home to monsters and fairies, and you could probably get anything you wanted here, but you might have to bargain away your soul to do it.

Once, centuries ago, the Wood pulled people out of their universes at a crossroads in their lives. While a person remained in the Wood, they would be given a chance to consider their story - because here, that's all anyone's life is - and maybe change in such a way that when they left, they would find a happier ending than was meant for them before. For others, events in the Wood led them astray, and their story took a darker turn. Babylon Wood is equal parts good and mischievous, helpful and self-serving, and how it turns out for anyone very much depends on the individual.

At that time, the Wood was a brighter, safer place - not free of its dangers, but also not without its places of sanctuary. And then, a hundred years ago, something terrible happened. No one will speak of it anymore, if they even remember, but quite a lot of blood was shed, the Arch where outsiders entered and left the Wood was broken, and the spirit of the Wood somehow fell dormant.

Now, the Wood is darker and much more dangerous than it once was. The forest has overtaken the places that once sheltered wanderers, and those who actually call the Wood home have grown suspicious of others and often fiercely protective of their territory. And no one new has come to the Wood since the Arch was broken - until now.

back to navigation
