It’s been less than six months since we re-launched our 3D category on Envato, but in that time, a quarter of all Envato subscribers have downloaded a 3D asset. 

So, what does that mean? It means that 3D isn’t just some passing fad. It’s big business, and it’s here to stay. It also means that we’re looking for more Envato Authors to join our 3D category to help us meet the ever-growing customer demand for high-quality 3D assets.

Whether you’re a seasoned 3D creator or just considering your first venture into the category, now’s the perfect time to explore what makes a successful 3D item on Envato.

Why create 3D?

3D is growing rapidly in popularity, with creators across animation, video, design, and development turning to it for more dynamic visual experiences. 

By expanding our 3D offerings, we aim to meet this growing demand and provide Envato customers with a comprehensive suite of 3D items.

What kinds of 3D items can I sell on Envato?

3D models

3D models are individual assets like a car, chair, or house. These can be imported into 3D software like Blender or Cinema4D and placed, manipulated, or edited within a scene.

All models must be submitted individually. While you can create a set of related assets—such as multiple furniture pieces—you should not upload them as a single downloadable pack. 

3D templates

3D templates are more complex. They include not only models, but other aspects of composition such as:

• Lighting
• Cameras
• Textures and materials
• Animation and rigging
• Text or logo placeholders
• Interactivity (especially for Spline templates)

The key requirement for a something to be considered a template is customisability. A template should allow customers to personalize or adapt the scene in a meaningful way. For example, a hero header scene for a website might include a placeholder logo for the customer to replace, or a product mockup might offer options to tweak lighting and positioning.

A project that only contains arranged models without interactivity or editable elements will not qualify as a template. That would be considered a model pack—which is not accepted in either category.

Spline templates should also offer interactive functionality for end-users, including clickable elements, animated transitions, scene or asset movement.

What isn’t allowed in Envato’s 3D category?

We have strict rules regarding what cannot be sold on Envato’s 3D category. Make sure you’re familiar with these rules to avoid spending time creating and uploading content that won’t be approved for sale. 

We’ll summarize some of the key points below, but make sure you refer back to our 3D item preparation and technical requirements article on the Author Help Center for more information.

Real-world items

At the moment, Envato Elements cannot accept 3D model content that is based on a trademarked real world asset. Models intending to digitally represent items like Apple iPhones, or actual cars cannot be accepted into the library. 

As a general rule, you can upload any 3D items to Elements that are not identifiable as belonging to a particular brand. Try to upload generic-looking versions of these items (e.g. a generic car rather than a specific model of a car, or car with recognisable features).

Designs inspired by real-world items are allowed as long as they are original and do not include logos or replicate a product’s exact appearance.

Mature content

Envato will allow anatomically correct and nude models in our 3D content under the following rules:

• Under no circumstances can you depict humans who can be construed to be minors under the age of 18.
• Your cover image (what customers will see when searching our site) cannot show nudity. This can be blurred, or show a portion of the image that does not contain nudity.
• Items depicting nudity must have a non-erotic commercial utility that does not violate our Acceptable Use Policy.
• 3D models that include nudity must be depicted respectfully in terms of title, description, clothing and posing. They cannot be overly suggestive, offensive, or sexualised.

These values are in addition, and complementary, to the Acceptable Use Policy which we will continue to enforce

Malicious content 

You must ensure your submission is free from viruses or malware. 

We take security very seriously, and may need to take action such as removing your items or Author account if viruses or malicious software are found in your items.

Tips for creating successful 3D items

Think like a customer

Design with real-world application in mind by considering how an Envato customer might use your 3D items. Remember that the most popular searches in the 3D category are for practical, everyday assets like cars, money, and houses. Think about how your models or templates can fit into animations, promotional videos, or marketing designs.

Do your due diligence

Take time to review the 3D submission technical guide and our upload step-by-step guide before submitting. 

Meeting requirements helps improve your acceptance rate and gives your customers a smoother experience.

Licensing and attribution

• Make sure you have the correct licenses for any assets you have included in your item. This includes assets that are in your Item Preview only; you will still need a commercial license for preview assets. 
• If you have assets that are linked to the main file, be certain you’ve included them in your .zip file. For these assets you will need to ensure you have a commercial redistribution license (the rights to re-sell that asset). 
• Check if any of the assets you have used require attribution

Keep your files clean!

• Make sure you organize and name the elements of your design in a clear and orderly fashion.
• Use layer groups and a coherent naming system to ensure that customers are able to easily use your design.
• Clearly explain what software might be required to edit the file in the description of the item.
