a) cool Valkyrie art b) armoring boobs

http://black-nata.tumblr.com/post/72260295453

Is there a protocol of some sort for discussing tumblr pretties here? I'm going with a simple link, I hope that's adequate.

The link is to apparently unused concept art for Thor 2. Valkyries mostly. It caught my eye because I really like that top Valkyrie on the winged-Sleipnir-thingy. (I like to point out when I think a woman is cool because I know I am hard on women in movies/tv/books. Sure, it's partly because the depictions usually suck, but I'm also aware that I'm just ... sexist.) To me she looks more solid and formidable than most fantasy women warriors. Certainly more than movieSif. I would follow this Valkyrie. Or maybe it's just that the horse is awesome?

Anyway, I wanted to mention that somewhere on tumblr or somewhere someone posted about armor on women and how it's unrealistic to armor their boobs into two separate mounds - in fact it's a death trap. One reason is the valley between will trap a sword - instead of deflecting away from the body, the armor will cause the sword to slide down between the breasts to the heart. The other reason is the shape means separate pieces riveted together which means a bunch of extra rivets ready to be pounded into the person by their enemy in battle. What you want is a simple armor with as few rivets as possible, shaped into one mound that will deflect the sword away. In fact you probably don't much need to accommodate the breasts anyway, depending - see Brienne on Game of Thrones.

I get that the sexy fantasy armor isn't meant to be realistic but now that the ridiculousness of it has been brought to my attention it's hard to ignore.

Hi everyone! I'm tired of complaining that tumblr doesn't allow for human interaction the way LJ did and so fandom is a cold, sad place now. Better to light a candle than curse the darkness etc etc. I'm going to post here more. Who knows, maybe the masses will come flocking back and all will be awesome again - but better, because we can now link to cool tumblr pics and things! I have the power to make that happen don't I? (Can you tell I've been reading the Coldfire trilogy again?)

I saw that snowflake challenge thingy but I don't think it's for me since I've been so fannishly inactive for so long. Well, except for looking at Loki pics on tumblr. Lots of Loki pics on tumblr. I'll just post whatever comes to mind instead. Every single day. And I will bug all of you to post too. Especially all my old friends - you know who you are. And LJ will be a bustling hub of fannish and human activity. Yes, it will!

So, hi! {{{{hugs}}}} What are you into right now?

Marvel Movies Jotun

So, a lot of fic is very Jotun-sympathetic. I get that the winners write the history and we don't know the Jotun side of the story, but still. They did apparently invade earth around 1000AD such that Asgard had to come in and save us. Also, perfectly intelligent people (like Loki for instance) over the course of a thousand years didn't question the common wisdom that the Jotun are violent "monsters." More than a thousand years, I guess, because they were one of the nine realms and known before that.

What evidence do we have that the Jotun are not in fact so unpleasant that it's unreasonable to call them and their culture monstrous? They are dignified and cool looking in the movie Thor but that doesn't really say much.

Also, when Odin defeated the Jotun what should he have done to keep them from being aggressive again? Was it unreasonable for him to take their power source? They can't have suffered too much - they could still travel between worlds by spacecraft. They were still alive a thousand years later. They just weren't living in their former splendor, yes? Or am I missing something? It seems to me that the real *suffering* is fanon.

Opinions? Things I'm missing?

Armored Leathers

Merry Xmas all. I've been quiet but I'm still very much here. It's still all Loki, all the time with me. I've been reading, reading, reading. I've been talking and thinking too. There's so much there, you know how it is when you're into a complex fictional character.

Still, I realized something tonight. I think the tipping point, the thing that really hooked me on Loki (movies, natch), might have been his leathers and armor. Yes, I am shallow. I have such a thing for the cool badass leather duster hung with weapons look. I realized this because I recently read this looong story: Bend Around The Wind which is basically Tony and Loki as Space Pirates. Viking Firefly actually. They are oh so badass and they are wearing armored up leather that they've forged and sewn and decorated and big guns and knives and the whole bit and I cannot get those images out of my head.

Sure Tony and Loki generally are all kinds of a complicated beautiful psychological mess but it's the leather and armor that just seals the deal. Where do I request art?

They are so different and RDJ is so aggressively personable - touchy feely and Tom is so nice and open. I just really want to know what they'd be like together, even gen, and my imagination just doesn't have those skills.

Can anyone point me? Please?
So I go away and I come back and now all the stories are at Archive Of Our Own. That is convenient and I hear there is a handy dandy notification feature for WsIP which is great because I seem to be reading a lot of them.

How do I find this notification feature? Do I have to be a member? If yes, does anyone have an invite they could send me? I clicked to get one and they said the waiting list is 27K+ people long!

Advice and help would be much appreciated - I am desperate to read more of these stories and MUST know IMMEDIATELY when they're updated. ; ) (You know the feeling).

edit: so, fandom rocks.
Loki!

I've only seen "Thor" once so I might be all wrong here (and I realize the comics are a different thing altogether) but -

I don't think Loki would have plotted to murder Thor - normally. I think that when he sent the destroyer thingy he was in a state of desperation having been unexpectedly handed everything he'd ever wanted and facing possibly losing it all again. He went off balance, he did things he normally wouldn't do (haven't most of us reached that state of mind though on a much smaller, non murderous scale?)

His actions in lying to Thor and telling him their father was dead I think were a little more calculated but still on the far side having unexpectedly been made king. And he was just putting him on ice really, taking a little bit of revenge, no real long term harm.

I'm not saying he's a nice guy - just that he's a sneaky, occasionally panicky, opportunistic guy - not a cold hearted psychopath.

Now though he's gone a bit crazy and is punishing himself with his whole "I've gone too far, there's no going back, I'd might as well be evil" thing.

all Loki all the time

I'm trying to work out some things about Loki even though I'm only a little way into this. I'm sure fandom has been over everything with a fine tooth comb already but please bear with this newbie.

This is all movieverse for me and I get that that means Asgard is a place of aliens and "magic" is just science we haven't figured out yet. In face I like all that a lot. Still, I cannot shake the gods' roles and for me, Loki is the trickster god, the liar, the god of chaos. He is the force of entropy. He is the disease that ruins your crops, the rot that gets in the timbers of your house, the flash flood. He is also creativity, humor - the unexpected, the new. Without him there is no innovation. He lets loose chaos just to see what happens - destruction and unexpected innovation both. He's needed.

Our Loki has feels though (as the kids apparently say these days), and he's gotten carried away. The god of chaos out of control is a dangerous thing and a thing he does very well. He revels in being out of control. I don't think that means he's fully a pscyhopath though. He doesn't get off on causing pain - just in disrupting and causing chaos. He's no sociopath either. He cares, and narcissistic as he is, he empathizes. He wouldn't be so good at messing with people if he didn't understand and feel them. He's just got that big empty hole of need him though and the constant need to punish himself. Yes, he's cruel and would torture kittens if that would make him feel better but he just needs to learn to believe he's loved, right? Right? And accept himself for who he is - which is the god of chaos and not-Thor. He wouldn't be a "nice" guy if he learned to accept himself but maybe he could stop short of fratricide and invading other worlds? I mean, somehow he managed to satisfy his chaotic urges in the hundreds of years before he flipped out in "Thor?" No?

old family photo hosting/organizing/sharing site?

I'd like to pick your brains about the best way to do a project.

I'd like to scan old family photos and put them online to share with far-flung family members. My hope is that they will do the same so we will be able to pool and share what we have for ourselves and the next generation.

I'd like it to be free or free-ish.
I'd like to be able to organize what's put up there in a variety of ways. (chrono, geo, etc)
I'd like people who have info on the pics to be able to add what they know.
I'd like it to be fairly easy to use so that the oldest generation would be comfortable contributing to it.

I could use any of the sites I know already I guess - LJ or FB or something but I'm wondering if there is something specifically well-suited to this project.

Thanks in advance.

Fitz/Fool

I'm reading books by Robin Hobb. Does anyone know the ones I mean? An Assassin trilogy and now a Fool trilogy. My slash goggles must have been broken because it took me to the third Assassin book to see the Fitz/Fool. Now I'm into the second of the Fool books and of course by now Fool's feelings are truly canon. In searching the internet for fic, I spoiled myself into finding out this relationship doesn't end the way I would choose. Ok, at the time I searched I understood that not all fictional relationships go the way I want but damn, Robin Hobb KNOWS what she's doing. She's writing the Fool's feelings SO perfectly, how can she not deliver at the end?? How??? I just read the scene where Fitz insists on confronting the Fool and the Fool knows better than to have this conversation but Fitz insists. It's utter agony. Complete and utterly perfect agony. It's exquisite. And it's the first time I've hated Fitz for his muddleheaded self-centeredness. I'm despising him right now. And in awe of Hobbs' skills here. How can this NOT end right???

Does anyone know that of which I speak? Please, please, talk to me. My heart is bleeding like the Fool's right now. Damn that Fitz.

Ye Olde Buggerie

Every time I google "[my current interest] slash fanfiction" I hit paydirt. This time though, with Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Tales, despite their being chock full of sweaty dirty manly men, I got nada. There is no Saxon Tales slash on the internet. None. Zilch. Nada.

I thought the internet was INFINITE, that there was some sort of quantum slash principle in which all pairings happen somewhere, always, on the internet.

I was deluding myself. ::sob::

(Look, near perfect icon though!)

Glee

That screen absolutely lights up when Kurt and Mercedes are on it. Why on earth is so much screen time wasted on Rachel and Finn? And the Glee teacher and the Guidance Counselor. They are bores. I gotta say that Sue is amazingly over the top and I love it. Also, Puck is hot.
