ARTS & SCIENCE Aoyama | TOKYO, JAPAN
The “ARTS & SCIENCE” originates from the philosophy that “all beautiful things are connected by a singular sense of aesthetics.” Inspired by this essential belief, the Aoyama store showcases a curated selection of original wear and items chosen with a distinct sense of beauty. At this store, we drew from the creation of beauty in art and the principles of science in geometry to deeply study various scientific observation instruments and manufacturing devices invented in the 19th century. These instruments and devices, designed with the primary purpose of measurement and production, embody a rational and functional form, yet every component is meticulously crafted to operate through human-powered mechanical motion. While their structure and form lack purely aesthetic intent, their unique details, formed through human involvement, are assembled with precision to serve specific functions. Inspired by the dynamic beauty found in these details, our approach to this project emphasized building the whole from its parts, developing a comprehensive vision that extends from the intricate elements outward.
The store occupies the first and second floors of a five-story building located in a central area where commercial and residential spaces coexist. Facing a busy street in a highly urbanized district, the building’s exterior was designed to resemble a discreet alleyway, quietly blending into its surroundings. On the ground floor, the store acts as an extension of the streetscape, yet upon stepping inside, the noise of the city fades into silence. A large elliptical void cuts through the space, achieved by significantly deconstructing parts of the original ceiling. This void is complemented by a generous staircase, creating a seamless vertical flow between the two floors. Within the store, the interplay of straight and curved lines takes center stage. A straight line, when distorted, transforms into a curve, while circular motion, when influenced by gravity, forms a straight path. These transitions are mirrored in the spatial design, guiding visitors through contrasting states: from the first floor to the second, from urbanity to intimacy, from openness to closeness, from order to fluidity. Straight lines evolve into curves, right angles into arcs, gray hues into earthy tones, stone into wood, pure iron into brass, and cold rigidity into warm embrace. Despite these contrasting elements, a gradual and delicate sense of harmony unfolds, drawing visitors further into the space.
As visitors explore the store, they are invited to touch objects and surfaces, engaging with the mechanical movements of various components and devices. This tactile interaction encourages subtle discoveries through the act of observation—“seeing and touching objects.” The textures and mass of objects resonate with the harmony between the quality of thought and the time invested in their creation. In a city driven by accelerated consumption, ARTS & SCIENCE offers a space that fosters the enduring connection between people and objects. Through the act of touching and appreciating materiality, the store provides a sanctuary where “all beautiful things are connected by a singular sense of aesthetics,” creating a lasting experience within the passage of time.
