OAE Objectives
Professionalize astronomy education
Help astronomers, astronomy educators and teachers world-wide to gain the skills they need in order to communicate about astronomy in primary and secondary schools in a professional and effective manner.
We have regular calls for grants for teacher training programs and are running a series of OAE Reviews which serve as best practice guides for important topics in astronomy education. We also host an annual virtual conference, the Shaw-IAU workshops on astronomy for education
Provide access to good resources
Make available excellent and effective resources for teaching about astronomical topics, internationally, under open licenses, and easy-to-find.

OAE Networking

We have a network of 355 National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs) from 119 countries and territories, including the NAEC team for The Netherlands.

On August 30-31 2025, the Romanian National Astronomy Education Coordinator team hosted a Teacher Training Program (TTP) event
The Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) node at Cergy University in France and the OAE Center India carried out one-week of collaborative work to address the astronomy contents of school curriculum and improve pedagogical techniques and approaches to teach astronomy to school students.
The Office of Astronomy for Education is hosted by the Haus der Astronomie on the campus of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg. The Office of Astronomy for Education is an office of the International Astronomical Union, with substantial funding from the Klaus Tschira Foundation and the Carl Zeiss Foundation. The Shaw-IAU Workshops on Astronomy for Education are funded by the Shaw Prize Foundation.
