Urodynamics Q & A

What is urodynamics?

In its simplest definition, urodynamics is the study of your urinary system in order to figure out what may be behind your incontinence. At Aster OB/GYN, Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner perform any number of tests to see where your problem lies, and these include:

  • A cystometry to test your bladder
  • An electromyography to test the muscles and nerves of your pelvic floor
  • Urethral pressure profile, which is a catheter that tests the health of your urethra
  • Uroflowmetry to measure the flow of your urine
  • Voiding pressure study to measure the pressure in your bladder when you urinate
After Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner review your symptoms and the degree of your incontinence, they determine which tests would be best. All of the tests are nonsurgical and help Dr. Fahmy zeroes in on the underlying cause so she can formulate a treatment plan that works best for your situation.
If you’re experiencing any problems with urine leakage or issues with your bladder’s ability to hold urine, urodynamics gets to the root of the problem. Your bladder is designed to hold urine and, as it fills, your nerves send messages to your brain to signal that your bladder is filling up. Your brain sends messages back to activate the small muscles called sphincters, which are located along your urethra, to hold the urine in your bladder until you can empty it.
When something goes awry in this process, whether with your bladder or urethra, it can cause urinary incontinence, which is the involuntary release of urine. Incontinence is a fairly common problem, especially as you age or if you’re pregnant, but this safety in numbers is usually of little consolation when it comes to dealing with the embarrassing and life-altering problem. Thankfully, there’s much that Dr. Fahmy and Dr. Roesner can do.
