AASM Sleep Team Education Program (ASTEP) is a dynamic online learning experience that provides sleep professionals educational courses to meet the demands of a growing and rewarding career in sleep. Consisting of a combination of hands-on training and self-study at your own pace, ASTEP is nationally recognized as an affordable, entry level education program designed for:
- Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who would like to advance their career through specialized training in sleep medicine.
- Anyone who does not currently hold credentials as an: RPSGT, CPSGT, RRT-SDS, or CRT-SDS. (See AASM Accreditation Standard B-10).
- Technicians required to complete an education program to meet current eligibility with:
- BRPT* requirements to apply to take either the RPSGT or CPSGT credentialing examinations, and/or
- State medical board licensure requirements to work in the field of sleep technology.
The AASM developed ASTEP with expert educators in the sleep field to provide standardized practical education that includes the:
- Clinical Introduction to Sleep and Sleep Disorders – consisting of 13 modules, this course introduces non-specialist clinicians to the fundamentals of sleep medicine, covering common disorders and essential diagnostic skills.
- Intro to Clinical Sleep Medicine for APPs – consisting of a series of 14 online modules along with electives that will advance your career through specialized training. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a certificate to showcase your knowledge.
- Intro to Pediatric Sleep Medicine for Technologists – consisting of 9 modules, this course introduces key concepts in pediatric sleep medicine, equipping clinicians and technologists with the skills to support safe, effective sleep studies in children.
- Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Course – consisting of 80 hours of practical education on the role of a sleep technologist, history of sleep medicine, and hands-on experience to properly set up and perform various patient sleep studies. After this course, learners will have the basic knowledge needed to begin working as sleep trainees.
- Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists – consisting of a series of interactive self-study learning videos ranging from 45-60 minutes in length followed by a brief set of post-test questions. After the modules, learners will have expanded their knowledge base and the responsibilities needed to perform, interpret, and score a sleep study.
Obtaining Your Credentials
As one of the first steps to achieving your goal of becoming a credentialed sleep technologist, ASTEP equips you with the education needed to meet the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) eligibility requirements to apply to take the Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) or the Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credentialing examinations.
The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) is the certification board that provides credentialing in sleep technology and grants education provider status as a Sleep Technology Approved Resource (STAR) Program. The BRPT offers various pathways for those obtaining their credentials as either a CPSGT or RPSGT and taking the associated credentialing examinations.
As a STAR-designated program, ASTEP is recognized by and meets the BRPT’s education eligibility requirements for the following two credentialing pathways:
- Focused Training, STAR Code: F017 – FOCUSED
- CPSGT Pathway 3 and RPSGT Pathway 4
- Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Course – each course session is held between 2-8 weeks and taken with an Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Accredited Course Provider.
- Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Final Exam – to be completed online within one (1) month of completing the Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Course, and
- The series of Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists, within three years (36-months) from the date of account registration.
- Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Course – each course session is held between 2-8 weeks and taken with an Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists Accredited Course Provider.
- CPSGT Pathway 3 and RPSGT Pathway 4
- Clinical Experience, STAR Code: SS002 – SELF-STUDY
- CPSGT Pathway 1 and RPSGT Pathway 1
- Intro to Sleep Medicine for Technologists, within three years (36-months) from the date of account registration.
- CPSGT Pathway 1 and RPSGT Pathway 1
Review the CPSGT and RPSGT Exam Blueprints to identify the pathways and eligibility requirements that must be completed to apply for and take the BRPT’s credentialing examinations.

*Applicants for certification or licensure must purchase and submit their ASTEP transcript as proof of completion of the Introduction to Sleep Medicine for Technologists program. Standalone CEC certificates are not accepted as evidence of completing the required educational program.
*New Jersey Trainee License Applicants: In addition to the ASTEP transcript, applicants must submit the ASTEP Certificate of Completion and a Progress Report confirming module enrollment. Standalone CEC certificates are not accepted.
