How does a destination actually use its infrastructure – roads, parking lots, trails, and cross-country ski trails? In the Val Surses vacation region, an objective data foundation is being established for this purpose: mobility and traffic data in (near) real time, presented in an easy-to-understand format on modern dashboards. ASE AG thus provides measurable, effective support for planning, operations, and visitor management.

A smart destination begins where decisions aren’t just plausible but can be substantiated: How is traffic volume distributed throughout the day? Which roads are used by cars, delivery vehicles, or heavy-duty trucks, and how? How much traffic actually remains in the region, and how much is just passing through? And on a practical level: Are parking spaces being used effectively, or are bottlenecks arising at the wrong time and the wrong place?

This is exactly where our project with Tourismus Val Surses Savognin Bivio AG comes in. Together with the destination, we use our expertise at ASE AG to set up measurement, commissioning, and ongoing monitoring.
The data is available at short intervals and is visualized by us in customized dashboards so that municipalities, the destination, authorities, and other partners can work with a shared set of facts – whether for traffic planning, construction phases, access regulations, operational management in day-to-day business.

In addition to mobility, it’s also about off-road usage: We measure how heavily trails are used – on foot or by bike. We reveal whether routes are sensibly laid out our if visitor guidance is needed. And we show how traffic on cross-country ski trails and ice rinks evolves throughout the day – serving as a basis for specifically adjusting offerings, service hours, or capacities.

Technically, at ASE AG we rely on a modular solution: In addition to our own measurement systems, we also integrate interfaces and data sources from third-party providers – with the goal of achieving a 360° overview of mobility and usage. Data protection is consistently taken into account: Processing is carried out with privacy-by-design, and analysis is based on anonymized/aggregated measurement values.

The ASE measurement system systematically records visitor and traffic frequencies as well as parking space occupancy in Zofingen’s old town. This provides the municipality with a detailed overview of visitor usage and movement patterns. It is a valuable basis for fact-based urban planning and local businesses.

Zofingen’s old town, with its picturesque buildings and narrow streets, is a lively meeting place for residents and visitors alike. The city wants to maintain ith high quality of life and enhance its appeal as a tourist destination in the future. This should be achieved in line with the needs of the various users and interest groups. ASE was commissioned to carry out measurements in order to establish a reliable data basis. Data is collected at Niklaus-Thut-Platz, Kirchplatz, and old Postplatz. This provides the municipality with a complete overview of the use of public space.

The count is completely anonymous and complies with the Federal Act on Data Protection. No personal data is stored or processed. The system only measures movement flows and vehicle frequencies without identifying individual persons.

The data shows daily numbers of people and vehicles as well as their distribution over time. The analysis of parking space occupancy is particulary valuable, as its provides information about the utilization of parking space. Since cars are still allowed to drive in the old town of Zofingen, at least in some areas, the municipality relies on reliable data to optimally manage traffic and urban development. The impact of construction sites or events can also be assessed on the basis of facts.

For local businesses, the measurement data provides important information on visitor frequencies and ideal times for activities or events. At the same time, the municipality benefits from an objective basis for new mobility concepts and infrastructure projects.

Thanks to its many years of experience in the field of real-time measurement systems, ASE supports Zofingen with precise sensor technology, intelligent data processing, and easy-to-understand dashboards to further develop the old town in a sustainable and data-based way.

With the help of intelligent crowd management, ASE ensures a better overview, safety and predictability at busy locations. The system recognizes critical movement patterns in real time – and enables rail companies to react quickly and in a targeted manner.

Full stands, passionate fans and a country in football fever – the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 in Lucerne was a complete success! To ensure that the fans’ arrival and departure ran safely and smoothly, Zentralbahn relied on an innovative system from ASE: the crowd management system at the underground Allmend/Messe station.

Through precise measurements and the use of AI, the system recognizes potentially critical situations at an early stage and informs the responsible authorities in real time. In this way, corrective measures can be initiated proactively and the safety of passengers can be guaranteed.

The system monitors the flow and density of people on the basis of anonymized video data – naturally in full compliance with the applicable data protection regulations. The data obtained also makes a valuable contribution to the long-term planning and development of the station.

Great report from RTS – Radio Télévision Suisse about the challenges in Swiss tourism and how the Stadt Luzern uses ASE’s solution to measure visitor frequency!

In 2023, the number of tourists in Switzerland reached new record highs. According to the latest statistics from the Bundesamt für Statistik BFS the number of overnight stays increased by 15% in the first six months of the year compared to the previous year. However, the high number of visitors is leading to considerable challenges in the regions affected. Popular tourist regions such as Lucerne, Graubünden and the Bernese Oberland have been particularly hard hit, as they are extremely popular with both international and domestic tourists.

The high number of visitors leads to overcrowding on the roads, at tourist attractions and on public transport, which has a significant impact on the everyday lives of residents. ASE provides the authorities and tourism associations with a solution for integrated capacity management to control the flow of visitors. The system, consisting of various sensors and AI-based data processing, enables proactive control of the flow of people. This allows capacity utilization to be quantified and predicted. The article reports on people counting on the beautiful Kappel Bridge with Xovis.

The European Championship games are in full swing. A total of 51 football matches will be held in Germany as part of EURO 2024. Even after the tournament, large events and concerts will regularly take place in the stadiums. These are true festivals of superlatives, and high visitor numbers are expected accordingly. To ensure the safety of visitors at all times, the managers of several train stations and stadiums in Germany decided to deploy A’s crowd monitor. This system anonymously monitors the flow of visitors and alerts security personnel when the number of visitors reaches critical levels. This enables early implementation of relief measures and ensures that fans have enough space. We are pleased that our system contributes to the safety and success of this sporting event.

At the Zürich Pride Festival 2024, ASE’s crowd monitor ensured safety by anonymously monitoring the number of visitors and alerting staff in case of overcrowding. This enabled timely relief measures and ensured sufficient escape routes for participants at all times.

During the Zürich Pride Festival 2024, attendees celebrated an extensive and colorful party at Landiwiese following a demonstration parade through the city. With many acts and a performance by Nemo as top highlights, organizers anticipated a large turnout. To ensure safety at all times despite the free entry, ASE’s crowd monitor was deployed. This system anonymously measures the number of visitors and alerts staff when the crowd size reaches a certain limit. This enables timely implementation of relief measures and ensures adequate escape routes for participants when needed.
