Yellow Dominant - oil 8x10

Yellow Dominant – oil 8×10

I don’t work in oil with the palette knife very often – except with my students.  I had so much fun doing this – wish I had more drying space for these little paintings – look how they glisten.  Both inspired by photos from Paint My Photo – copyright free website.

2014 - 9 Morning has Broken 004Rszd

Sunrise – September

I honestly love both.  This was a productive summer and I am still thinking of projects to be started.  I am preparing canvases and still focused on art on paper.  School classes are almost in full gear.  Thank goodness they didn’t start all the same week.   I feel a bit overwhelmed and more focused on the classes – preparing class material and thinking about my student’s needs.  Teaching is invigorating and it takes time from my work.  I’ve been to the Alex Colville Art Show at the AGO 2x’s already – am going again this week and plan to see it at least 3 more x’s before it leaves Toronto in January.  My son and his friend viewed the show last weekend and were very impressed.   Lets hear it for great art.  It has inspired me to pursue my figurative work.

Ahinga – pencil drawing

Because this bird looks so Japanese I started thinking of it as such.  But it is a bird of the Americas.  It was quite a task to do this drawing.  I began wondering if I should learn Scratchboard.  I may rework this bird image in a more bold medium – ink comes to mind.   This bird intrigues me.

Alex Colville Art Show at the AGO

I was at the AGO [Art Gallery of Ontario] today to see the Alex Colville Show [http://alexcolville.ca] & am extremely happy. Great show – lucky for us no school groups or crowds. Recommend this show – to anyone. His artistry, insights and connection to animals [especially dogs] for their emotional and spiritual comfort is compelling. I was very moved by the gathering of personal images and paintings. It is an emotional show – which may be surprising to some who may only see the quiet and ‘bloodlessness’ in his presentation. He offers a dream-like quality. His war paintings are so somber and he layers these images into his later works to remind the viewer of the past. A must see.
