Our brands need to get there or get left behind!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-shareaholic-thumbnail wp-image-12763\" src=\"https:\/\/arraydigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-31-at-10.29.30-AM.png\" alt=\"percentage of US adults using social media\" width=\"640\" height=\"311\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>But Does Social Media Actually Work for Marketing?<\/h2>\n<p>There are lots of disgruntled business owners out there who have tried social media with little to no payoff.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more than a handful of articles ranting about how social media is a waste of time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/piasilva\/2017\/02\/20\/when-social-media-is-a-waste-of-time-for-businesses\/#203cdcc237fe\">like this one<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>(But even this article is riddled with Twitter sharing options and is actually about the mistakes business owners make on social media.)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-12764 size-shareaholic-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/arraydigital.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2018-10-31-at-9.42.59-AM-e1540996301817.png\" alt=\"is social media a waste of time\" width=\"640\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The moral of the story is this: if you try social media with no know-how and no strategy, you\u2019re just about guaranteed to waste your time.<\/p>\n<p>But if your social media strategy has the right goals, the right platforms, and the right approach to content, social media can be one of your brand\u2019s biggest allies.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Picking the Right Social Media Platform<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re really just starting out, as in you aren\u2019t on social media at all, you\u2019ll need to decide what platform(s) you are going to use.<\/p>\n<p>To make this decision, you need to ask two questions.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Where Is Your Target Audience Hanging Out Online?<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s leave social media for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Take a college recruiter for example. They\u2019re ideally looking for 16 to 20-year-old students preparing to attend college or maybe to transfer. Would it make more sense for them to focus their marketing on a nursing home or on local high schools?<\/p>\n<p>Obviously the high schools!<\/p>\n<p>Social media is a similar animal. While we will start looking at the overall demographics, you want to ask the question \u201cWho is on this platform?\u201d before you commit time and energy to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When picking a platform, ask a few questions like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s my target age group?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Am I primarily targeting men or women? (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnicoreagency.com\/pinterest-statistics\/\">Yes, Pinterest is 81% women<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What are they interested in?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s their favorite platform for entertainment?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Do a Google search or two focused on platforms you\u2019re curious about. Search for examples of people and businesses like yours that have succeeded on social. Where are they working?<\/p>\n<h3>2. What Kind of Content Will You Produce?<\/h3>\n<p>This is a big one. You don\u2019t just jump into every platform because it\u2019s popular. You only want to go where you have valuable content to contribute.<\/p>\n<p>For example, we do a lot of work with HVAC providers. Facebook is a great tool because we put together articles and videos that provide valuable information to homeowners. These get shared, commented on, and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>We would not think to put our HVAC providers on Instagram necessarily because Instagram has an even shorter attention span than Facebook. Our content is helpful, but it\u2019s not exactly glamorous or visually amazing. Why? Because it has the broadest appeal. It\u2019s not confined to one kind of content like many other platforms. It provides community organization and expanded features.<\/p>\n<p>This makes Facebook a great home base for just about any business. It\u2019s personal. It\u2019s visual. It\u2019s fast-paced with limited off-platform engagement. It\u2019s more consumption-friendly, making it popular entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter, on the other hand, is more balanced between text and visuals, but because of its limited character count, text tweets are still easy to consume quickly. It\u2019s not a great place to write an essay on why your business is the best thing since sliced bread <strong>(you really shouldn\u2019t do that anywhere)<\/strong>, but it\u2019s great for informal engagement and interaction.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, see if there are brands similar to yours on the platform. See what makes them successful and determine if you have the time and manpower to imitate it. Ask your team what kinds of questions they regularly get from prospects or curious customers, and make content featured around those things!<\/p>\n<h3>The Ingredients of a Winning Social Media Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>While every brand\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/arraydigital.com\/content-marketing-vs-social-media-marketing\/\">content strategy<\/a> will look a little bit different, there are a few things that need to be present if you\u2019re plan is going to work.<\/p>\n<h4>Social Media Needs to Be Social!<\/h4>\n<p>Don\u2019t just post about your products and your company. Feature employees! Post pictures when you network and tag people! Having outbound links in your posts hurts your reach, but if it\u2019s social media, it is more likely to perform excellently!<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t have to be all the time, but the more you can include people in your posting, the better off you\u2019ll be.<\/p>\n<h4>The More Visual, the Better<\/h4>\n<p>Social media platforms across the board are prioritizing visual content in their algorithms. The pinnacle is video, followed by pictures and graphics. Posts with just words won\u2019t perform as well. <strong>On platforms like Facebook, links to your website will also hurt your reach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So to the visuals.<\/p>\n<p>For many business owners, this is where they panic. They\u2019re not a photographer. They only know how to take cell phone videos. And they\u2019re certainly not a graphic designer. How do you create content then?<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, there\u2019s a lot of people in this boat so there\u2019s a host of useful tools available to help you out! Just use their hundreds of pre-made templates, enter your own pictures and text, and you\u2019ll be on your way!<\/p>\n<p>For videos, we edit just about everything on iMovie to keep it simple, and then make it <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/appvemely.com\/\">viral-ready with an app called Veme.ly ($7 a month)<\/a>.<\/strong> You may have seen these kinds of videos on social, and this is the easiest way to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Take our advice if you\u2019re a DIY social media wielding business owner. Get a low-cost <a href='https:\/\/arraydigital.com\/managing-partners-podcast\/how-law-firms-can-save-time-with-ai-tools\/'>tool or two and save<\/a> yourself tons of time.<\/p>\n<h4>Schedule Your Content Out<\/h4>\n<p>One of the biggest complaints of social media is that it\u2019s too much work to remember to post all the time. If you\u2019re only on Facebook, you can use their Publishing Tools to schedule out all of your posts.<\/p>\n<h2>Making an Action Plan for Social Media<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few ways you can get started on your social media empire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The first is that you can do it yourself.<\/strong> The main perk of this is that you have total control of how your brand is represented, at least as far as you are able to create decent content.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A second option is to bring on an intern or a staff member.<\/strong> This is a great option for smaller businesses that don\u2019t have a ton of financial margin. Especially interns &#8211; they come pretty cheap and they are usually on social media as it is anyway!<\/p>\n<p><strong>A third option is to hire an agency<\/strong>, and there are a few reasons businesses choose this.
