Setting: Tommy is from present day Pittsburgh, and the story of Warrior largely takes place in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City.
History: Tommy was raised in an unhappy household. His father, an ex-Marine, was an alcoholic and physically and verbally abusive to his sons and wife, as well as a strict and demanding coach to Tommy who competed in wrestling through childhood and into his early teens.

While Tommy was in his young teens, his mother decided to leave her husband, of whom she was terrified. Her plan was originally to take both Tommy and his older brother Brendan with her but Brendan, who had fallen in love with a local girl, opted to stay in Pittsburgh with his father. For Tommy, this was an immense betrayal at a time when he felt he needed his older brother to take care of him and their mother. Tommy and his mother fled without Brendan, travelling west and then north to get as far away from Tommy's father as they could. Tommy's mother soon fell sick, however. She and Tommy were living in crappy apartments in Tacoma at the time and were unable to afford health care. She died eventually, leaving Tommy on his own. Tommy buried her and never got in touch with his father or Brendan to let them know of her death.

As soon as he was old enough, Tommy enrolled in the military and became a Marine, working his way up to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He became close friends with a man in his unit named Manny. After being deployed overseas, Tommy's unit was caught in a friendly fire incident that killed the entirety of Tommy's unit, save himself. Angry and hurt and distraught over the loss of another person he cared about, Tommy went AWOL and tried to get out of the country. On his way out, he came across a battle in progress where a number of American soldiers had been trapped in a tank which was sinking. Tommy ripped the door off the tank to save them and then disappeared before anyone could ask who he was, though he did get caught briefly on camera.

That brings us to the present, about 14 years after Tommy first left home. He eventually makes his way back to Pittsburgh where, drunk, he seeks out his father, now almost 1000 days sober, to confront him for all the ways in which his past alcoholism and abuse damaged Tommy and his mother's lives. He falls asleep that night in his childhood home but takes off again soon after.

Attempting to re-establish some sort of life in the 'burgh, Tommy joins a local gym, using his mother's maiden name "Riordan." Also training at this gym is one of the top MMA fighters in the world, a guy called Mad Dog Grimes. One day, after Mad Dog knocks out his sparring partner and his manager has difficulty finding a replacement on short notice, Tommy offers to fight him in exchange for $200. He quickly and ruthlessly knocks Mad Dog out, a fight which is caught on cellphone camera and becomes a Youtube sensation.

At around the same time, advertising starts circulating for an MMA competition called Sparta, which is supposed to feature the top 16 middleweight fighters in the world in a two-day, instant elimination, winner-takes-all competition. Tommy sets his sights on competing in the hopes that he will earn enough money to give to Manny's widow and children to support them. He asks his father to train him for it, specifying that this would be a strictly professional relationship and is in no way Tommy forgiving or trying to reestablishing a family relationship with his dad. His father accepts on the condition that Tommy move back into the house and follow their old training scheme.

Largely on the basis of the Youtube video, Tommy is invited to compete in Sparta. However, his brother, Brendan, has also been invited to compete and when the two spot each other during the initial press conference, Tommy storms to avoid having to speak to him. Later that night, news footage reveals that the Youtube video of Tommy beating up Mad Dog has also allowed the soldiers whose lives Tommy saved to put a name to the face they remember from that night, and one of them has released a video thanking Tommy for his actions. Tommy, ridden with guilt over the circumstances that led up to that incident, leaves his hotel room and goes to walk on the beach. Brendan finds him there, and the two of them argue about the sense of abandonment they both feel over Brendan choosing to stay and Tommy choosing to go. "You ain't my brother," Tommy finally tells Brendan. "My brother was in the corps."

The next day, Sparta begins. Despite massive skepticism amongst the commentators, Tommy easily wins his first matches, earning a loud following in the audience. Once his fights for the night are done and unable to sleep, Tommy heads to a nearby casino to try to distract him. His father finds him there, and the two have a conversation in which Tommy reveals that he's not a war hero like everyone assumes because he'd gone AWOL and tells his father that the only thing he has in common with Brendan is that neither of them need him.

Tommy wakes up in their shared hotel suite the next morning to find that his father, hurt by Tommy's words and his inability to connect with his son, has gotten very drunk. Tommy takes the half-finished bottle from him and pulls him into bed and holds him until he falls asleep.

With his dad still out cold, Tommy attends the last day of Sparta on his own. His grudge rematch with Mad Dog is an easy win for Tommy and a bit of a bloodbath. It's in these moments -- when Brendan is also advanced to the final and the military police arrive to inform Tommy that he'll be arrested following the last fight.

So Brendan and Tommy fight, and it is painful and very little fun for either of them, though Tommy at times seemed to relish the opportunity to work out his feelings by pounding on his brother. Brendan manages to dislocate Tommy's shoulder eventually, but Tommy insists on pretending to be fine and continuing the fight. Distressed, Brendan tries to avoid doing more damage and eventually manages to get Tommy in a hold long enough to apologize, promise things will be all right, and tell Tommy he loves him. Tommy seems to hesitate for a moment but then taps out, inching the brothers a little closer to actually healing their relationship.

Personality: Tommy's been through a lot of crap in his life, which has left him profoundly hurt and angry. Having never really learned how to deal constructively with negative emotions (his father wasn't the best role model), Tommy tries to bury them instead. As a result, he's never dealt with a lot of his feelings about the things that have happened to him and instead, they swirl around in his head in a mess of guilt and anger, making him moody and withdrawn and more inclined to express himself physically than through words. As a result, Tommy is not particularly talkative and certainly not inclined to talk emotions, unless actually (and generally physically) forced into some sort of moment of emotional catharsis.

While fighting used to be something Tommy did because he was ambitious and wanted to be one of the best fighters in history, he's less idealistic about it now. In addition to doing it for the money, Tommy's motivated by the fact that fighting is the one time his head feels clear. Fighting gives him a single goal and a single avenue to direct his negative feelings outward. Of course, once the fight's over, he's immediately back to not knowing how to deal with his emotions, which leads him to seek out another fight in a cycle that self-perpetuates because nothing is ever really solved.

As if Tommy was not cheerful and lighthearted enough, he's also a champion grudge-holder. There's some evidence that Tommy genuinely cares about his father but is still too angry about the abuse he and Brendan and their mother lived through to really forgive him, and he similarly still cares about Brendan but has buried those feelings far under his anger over Brendan's perceived betrayal. There's no question that Tommy has a massive chip on his shoulder, which can make him snide and sarcastic and outright mean. His bitterness and, to a degree, self-pity can also cloud his ability to see things from perspectives other than his own.

Thankfully, Tommy's not just a mess of negativity and nothing else. By his father and Brendan's accounts, he was a cheerful kid growing up, given the circumstances, and a lot of the starker changes he's gone through are the result of his mother and Manny's deaths and his experiences during the war. There are still flashes of who Tommy used to be that break through now and then. His sense of humour may lean toward the sarcastic, but it still exists. He smiles sometimes and will do what's right most of the time, even if it isn't smart. He feels a great deal of loyalty to the men in the marine corp., who he honestly sees as his brothers. With strangers, at least in short interactions, he can be genuinely polite and well-behaved and almost, almost sweet.

What it comes down to is that Tommy is really still a little boy, wrapped up in the body of a bruiser. Emotionally immature and unhappy, he lashes out because he thinks it might make him feel better, but it never does. Underneath, though, he's a kid who's lonely and isolated, who wants to connect with other people but is wary of doing it because of how many times it's bit him in the ass in the past. He's actually almost a good guy at the end of the day. It just can take a lot of work to figure that out.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

Ground and Pound | ABILITY. Tommy is first and foremost a fighter. He is (on a human scale, at least) very strong and fast and in excellent physical shape, due to a lifetime of training. Within his universe, he's near the very top in terms of fighters in his weight class. As an MMA fighter, Tommy knows bits and pieces of a range of styles of fighting (boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, muay Thai, kickboxing, karate, judo, etc.), though he's specifically a ground-and-pound fighter, which means he grounds an opponent with a takedown or throw and then pounds on him until he taps or is out cold.

Lookin' for a Take-Down | ABILITY. Sort of a sub-ability to the one above, Tommy's long experience with fighting has given him a good eye for other peoples' fighting styles. He knows how to spot weaknesses and openings in even the toughest opponent's defense.

Fight for Right and Freedom | ABILITY. Tommy's not just a hand-to-hand fighter, though. As a former Marine, he's been through intense military training and has experience in not only tank door-ripping but presumably all the other things that modern infantry soldiers are expected to do.

You Ain't My Brother | WEAKNESS. The flip-side to Tommy's wide range of physical/combat skills is that he really isn't all that educated. Although he can be surprisingly astute at times, his formal education tops out around high school at best and even then, he was more concerned with his competitions and the mess that was his home life than learning the basic knowledge that was being taught.

Log Sample: His throat feels like it's been plowed over by a semi by the time they touch down in Dallas. It's raining, and the wet tarmac out the window flashes under the bright runway lights. It looks like the middle of the night out there, but Tommy lost track two countries ago, and his watch is still set to Arabia Standard Time, so fucked if he knows what time it is really. It might just be the clouds overhead throwing everything off.

The woman next to him shifts impatiently like she can't even manage to wait the few minutes it'll take for them to taxi into their gate. Tommy hunches down further in his seat, keeps his hood pulled down over his face, and pretends to still be sleeping like he has been ever since the woman'd turned to him, fifteen minutes after take-off, and started to tell him about her niece. He hadn't been trying to be rude, but there's a limit to how much he can care about some East Coast pre-med he'll never meet right now.

He waits until most of the rest of the passengers have cleared off, the ones in a hurry at least, before he pushes himself out of his seat. His neck is stiff from being bent at a sharp angle for a few hours but whatever. It's just his neck. It's fine.

The mom down the aisle is giving him a funny look as he gets his backpack down from overhead. Her husband is trying to coax their little girl away from the airplane window, but she won't budge, and Tommy thinks it's pretty fucking funny what a month and a few thousand miles will do to a guy. From one of Our Boys overseas to the kind of person who gets glared at by moms on planes. Life is hilarious.

Halfway to security, he gets hit by the desire to just say screw it and turn around, trade in his ticket to El Paso and go somewhere else, disappear. There's not a single person in his life he thinks he could look in the eye right now, which isn't that hard when the people in his life who are still alive can be counted on one hand. He stops where he is and stares down at his shoes and doesn't punch the wall closest to him, even though he wants to. Shit like that freaks people out, and freaking people out gets you noticed.

Pilar and the kids, he tells himself, You owe them and starts walking.

CHARACTER BACKGROUND:

"I'm gonna tell you what my mother told me when I wanted to quit cheerleading. You're not very pretty, you have no boobs, and you can't do a basket toss to save your life, but you made a commitment. So pick up your pompoms, Pierce, stuff your bra, and get ready for the team to forget you at a Taco Bell because life is tough, but we soldier on. And that's just the way it goes." -- Annie Edison, Community 1x05: Advanced Criminal Law

Annie is currently in her third year at Greendale Community College. As a teenager, she went to high school at Riverside High where she had a near perfect academic record and was blindingly unpopular despite all her efforts. For most of high school, she had a crush on Troy Barnes, the quarterback and prom king, but he barely knew she existed.

A lot of people barely knew she existed, actually, until her desire to succeed and to get into a good college drove her to take drugs to boost her performance. She developed an addiction to Adderall and after a lot of weird behaviour, including trying to straighten the lines on the football field during a game and breaking down in a rant about how everyone is a robot, she finally gained some notoriety at Riverside High, along with the nickname "Little Annie Adderall." She dropped out shortly after.

Her parents, particularly her mother, wanted to put the whole episode behind them, forgetting it had even happened, but Annie insisted on dealing with her problems. She checked into rehab and started attending Narcotics Anonymous meetings. She eventually got her addiction under control, but her parents cut her off financially. She now lives over a sex store on the bad side of town, carries a gun in her purse to protect herself, and barely scrapes by.

After getting clean, she registered at Greendale as part of the plan to get her life back on track and make her way to the Ivy League education she always dreamed of. (It may also have had something to do with Troy registering there, but that's a different story that Annie won't be acknowledging anytime soon.) Soon after the start of her first year, she gets invited to join a study group for her Spanish 101 class. The whole idea of the study group turns out to be a plot by one member of the group, Jeff Winger, to sleep with another, Britta Perry, but the group quickly figures out that they can make some headway studying together and -- even more surprisingly -- they actually enjoy each other's company a lot of the time. They soon become close friends and embark on an almost never-ending series of wacky adventures together.

This study group includes Troy who is now more aware of Annie's existence than he ever was in high school, though not any more aware of her feelings for him. For a while, Annie continues to pine after him and tries to engineer ways to get Troy to like her. She finally decides that it's not going to happen and moves on to date Vaughan Miller, another student at Greendale though not part of the study group, until he transfer to a different school. She had originally planned to go with him, in an effort to be spontaneous and really live her life, but chooses not to in the end. In part, this is because she has developed off and on feelings for Jeff, though the relationship never really develops beyond flirting. At present, they are both at least pretending to believe that the age difference between them makes any possibility of a relationship beyond friendship too gross to contemplate, though some level of mutual attraction definitely persists.

Beyond that, Community, as an episodic half-hour comedy sitcom about hijinx at a community college, becomes hard to summarize in a way that makes chronological sense. Some final important points about Annie, then, in bullet form:

- Annie is Jewish.
- In high school, Annie was a cheerleader, partly at her mom's insistence. People still left any parties she threw early because they didn't want to miss the news, and she claims that the crossing guard used to lure her into traffic.
- Annie lost her virginity to her high school boyfriend but because the lights were off at the time, she had never seen a penis before entering community college (and she thinks they're overrated now that she has seen one).
- Annie is involved in many clubs and societies and special events on campus. She has worked for the student newspaper.
- Annie is one of the few members of the group who tolerates Pierce Hawthorne, the oldest member of the study group who is prone to racism, sexism, and basically every other -ism possible. She sticks up for him for a long time when the other member of the group try to kick him out but sometimes, he crosses the line even for her.
- Like the other students at Greendale, Annie was infected and turned into a zombie on Halloween during her second year at Greendale. Also the like the other students, since being cured, she doesn't remember anything about that Halloween.

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:

At first glance, Annie is a textbook overachiever. Studious, smart, and serious about her schoolwork, Annie is probably the member of Community's study group that is most at home in a school environment. Unlike a lot of the rest of life in general, Annie knows how to excel in academics, and she throws herself into her work (and into extra-credit and extracurricular projects) with an enthusiasm that suggests that she's actually enjoying herself and may be one of the only members of the group to honestly love learning for learning's sake. Having lost her way once, due to addiction, she is especially motivated to make the most of her time at Greendale and thus is particularly protective of her school and her friends.

Annie's enthusiasm leads her to often lend a hand to anyone and everyone who might need her help. She's kind, sweet, and caring and though her desire to help might often be calculated to also help Annie get ahead (whether through a new line on her CV or a little bump in her grades or just to make the school a more respectable place), it's also clear that a good deal of her pluck, gung-ho spirit, and empathy for other people is not fake but, rather, bewilderingly, fiercely genuine.

Annie's drive to (over-)achieve has its dark side, however. She is extraordinarily ambitious and can switch from sweet, Disney Annie to competitive, destructive Annie on a dime when something steps in to either thwart her ambition or challenge her academic dominance. When in the throes of competition, Annie's moral compass can get a little wonky, and she sometimes steps over the line and does things that she would never do at any other time. It was her drive to be the best, after all, combined with her extreme fear of failure, that led to her addiction to Adderall. Annie's more aware of this side of her personality now than she was as a high school student and tries to reign herself in and take things more calmly but as she herself notes, she's never going to be a relaxed person.

(Sometimes, though, just sometimes, Annie really does enjoy the opportunity to let go.)

Most of the rest of the time, Annie is pretty straight-laced. She doesn't participate in as many of the group's less legal/moral activities (though when she does, she tends to embrace them with her usual whole-hearted enthusiasm), more often taking on the role of nagging the others into good behaviour. She also has a certain aura of innocence and naivete around her, despite her cleverness otherwise, that comes from a lack of experience. While not a prude, she approaches romantic relationships from a very stereotypical, teenage girl perspective still and is, in her own words, "perfectly comfortable being uncomfortable with my sexuality."

Occasionally, she is self-conscious -- particularly regarding her sexuality and her youth -- but for the most part, Annie is a confident, articulate, and assertive young woman. Over the course of the first two seasons, Annie has matured a lot. She's dropped some of her reliance on schoolgirl innocence to get her way and picked up some of the world weariness that Jeff and Britta display. While still mostly an optimist and inclined to expect the best of people and situations, she's developing a cynical streak that is becoming more and more pronounced as time goes on.

WORLD: Annie lives in a world that, while a little absurdist, is the real world. She lives in Greendale, Colorado and attends an affordable, slightly crappy community college there. Admittedly, a higher percentage of hijinx tend to happen at Greendale than is strictly realistic. There was an actual outbreak of zombie-ism thanks to the Dean catering the Halloween party with stuff bought at an army surplus store. The annual paintball game tends to turn the school into a barren, post-apocalyptic wasteland for a few days every year. She may have visited an actual haunted house with a real ghost at one point and been briefly institutionalized due to mercury poisoning. But otherwise, everything is exactly as it is in reality.

SAMPLES
THIRD PERSON: The day Greendale course registration opens, Annie wakes up unusually early. She's an early riser anyway by carefully nurtured habit – because think of the hundreds of things you can do before breakfast if you just get up early enough! – but on special occasions, she gets up even earlier. Course registration qualifies as a special occasion.

It occurs to her, as she blindly reaches out to shut off the alarm and scrubs the crusty bits out of the corners of her eyes with her thumb, that the people she knew in high school would probably consider this pretty pathetic, but Annie tries not to think about that much anymore. Those people don't matter. When she’s managed a NPPF (Nobel Pulitzer Peabody Fields – not as catchy as an EGOT but whatever) then they could see who’s pretty pathetic.

Annie tiptoes her way to her tiny bathroom, taking little hops from carpet to carpet to avoid touching the cold floor with her bare toes. Another reason she likes early mornings is how quiet everything is. Dildopolis, below, is silent first thing in the day. The drug dealer a few doors down hasn't started coughing up a lung. Annie slips into the shower and shuts her eyes and enjoys the feeling of water dribbling against her neck because this is the one moment of the day when she manages to quiet her brain too.

By the time the water starts to run cold – it takes five minutes and 34 seconds; she’s timed it – the moment has passed. Annie steps out of the shower and wraps herself up in a towel, and she's ready to take on another day.

Her laptop is where she left it on her desk. She lets it boot up as she gets dressed and then sits herself down, running through her checklist to make sure she has everything she needs. Mock timetable? Check. Back-up mock timetable? Check. Back-up, back-up mock timetable? Check. Blank timetables for emergency course reorganization? Check. Pens (black, blue, red)? Check, check, check. She happily ticks off her boxes and then sets her checklist aside.

She glances at the time in the bottom right corner of her computer screen. Right. She nods to herself. Only two and a half more hours to wait. She’ll be ready.

Do you know what's great about fall? Okay, so if I was back home, the days would be getting shorter, and the weather would be getting colder, and maybe Dildopolis would be having its annual "Fall-atio Fall Blow-out" sale which would keep you up until three in the morning until you're so exhausted you sleep in the shower with a pillow case over your head just to block out some of the noise. [ Annie pauses to take a deep breath. ] But fall? Is still great. Because fall is about new beginnings. And change. And half-price day planner refills.

You get to throw out everything you've been carrying with you over the summer and set new goals! I know people will tell you that's New Years, but no one actually keeps resolutions anyway because they’re always too big and fancy and impossible. Fall goals are just… small. Practical. Doable. And so you can do each of them and check them off on your sensibly colour-coded and cross-indexed spreadsheet and for a couple of months, you get to feel like you’re accomplishing things. You get to feel accomplished. That's what's great about fall.

Setting: Eames comes from a world analogous to modern day Earth with the only major modification being that, somewhere in the last decade, the military developed dreamshare technology. Dreamsharing or lucid dreaming, through the use of special chemicals and a device called a Portable Automated Somnacin Intravenous device (PASIV), allows individuals to construct, control, and share dreams with others. Originally, this technology was intended for military training so that recruits could learn to kill and die in the safe space of a dream. In dreams, or most dreams at least, the only result of death is that the individual wakes up. However, like most cutting edge secret technology, the secret eventually got out and while dreamshare remains largely unknown, industries have evolved around using the technology for recreational and/or illegal activities (particularly corporate espionage and theft, which is what Eames is involved in).

Lucid dreaming can be done alone, creating a stable dream that is more under the control of the dreamer than a natural dream, or it can be done with multiple people. When multiple people share a dream, one individual serves as the dreamer and creates the setting of the dream. Where another individual is connected to the PASIV as the target of the dream, their subconscious then populates the world, providing the people who live within the dreamer's architecture. These individuals are called "projections," as they are projections of the target's subconscious. Other individuals can be added to the dream as neither dreamer nor target and simply exist within the dream. If the dreamer dies in the dream or otherwise wakes up, the dream world collapses and everyone within it is ejected.

Dreams may be layered. Individuals within a PASIV-induced dream may hook themselves up to a PASIV within that dream and create a new dream within the dream. Two levels of dreams can be achieved relatively easily. At three or more levels, the dreams become unstable and may collapse more easily unless the individuals involved take a sedative as well. Sedation is dangerous, however, as it limits the methods open for exiting a dream. A dreamer will wake up, as noted, when killed in the dream, when the set time on the PASIV runs out, or when they are given a kick (a falling sensation experienced by their sleeping body, usually administered by actually causing the person to fall). When sedated, though, being killed in a dream does not wake you up and instead drops you further into the subconscious of the individuals sharing the dream, into an uncontrolled dream space called limbo.

As dream time passes much more quickly than real world time, it is possible to spend years in limbo while only seconds pass in the real world. As such, it becomes very easy to lose sight of the fact that limbo is only a dream and not reality. This is, to a lesser extent, true for all dreams. (Indeed, some people choose to get lost in dreams, and dream dens exist where people can pay to be put into a dream for hours on end. "The dream," one character notes of such people, "has become their reality.")

To protect against this, the central characters of Inception carry around objects, called totems, which they use to tell dreams from reality. Totems usually have unique qualities, such as their weight or the feel of the surface, known only to the individual that carries the totem. This makes it impossible for anyone other than themselves to accurately reproduce the totem in a dream. Thus, if the totem feels wrong and behaves the wrong way, the person knows that they are in a dream and not in reality. It has been confirmed that Eames carries a totem in the form of a red poker chip.

All individuals within a dream can control and change the dream. This includes bringing in projections of their own subconscious, altering the architecture of the dream, altering their own appearance, or adding/changing items with in the environment of the dream. Doing this when one is not the target of the dream, however, carries some risk as changes, especially big and noticeable ones, tend to alarm the subconscious of the target and cause the projections in the world to turn on anyone perceived as foreign. Projections will attack in order to kill foreign presences and eject them from the dream. In fact, an entire sub-industry of dreamshare exists to teach people to militarize their subconscious, in effect providing a trained army of subconscious security projections that will systematically seek out and destroy any foreign presences. Most people, however, are not militarized since dreamshare technology is still largely unknown.

There are many parts to a dreamshare operation, especially the illegal sort, from the "hardware" (ie. chemists who formulate the necessary Somnacin compounds) to the "software" (ie. architects who design the dreams). Eames himself is involved in theft from dreams, whereby an individual or a group pull the target into a dream, usually without alerting the target that this is happening, and then pull a con or heist to acquire information stored in the target's subconscious. Since many jobs are complex, people tend to specialize in certain aspects of a dream heist. Eames, for example, is good at many parts of the job but is best known for his skills as a forger, which involves changing his appearance in the dream, largely at will, to that of other people or into his own creations. Some individuals work in teams or partnerships; others, such as Eames, are more freelance and are hired onto teams as needed, depending on the nature of the job at hand.

Dream theft works by creating a safe space within a dream, such as a literal safe, and suggesting, usually indirectly, to the target and their subconscious that this would be a good place to hide secrets. Once this is done, it is simply a matter of breaking in and stealing the secrets from the safe place. Other methods of dream theft, called "extraction," are through talking with a target's projections or using the dream world to stage an elaborate con to induce the target to give his secrets up voluntarily.

Since it is possible to extract ideas from a person's subconscious, it is theoretically also possible to implant ideas there as well, a process known as "inception." The trick to successfully implanting an idea is that it must be done in such a way that it seems to come from the target itself, rather than an idea stuck there by an outside source. Inception has been successfully performed twice, once prior to the beginning of the canon by the extractor Cobb on his wife Mal and once as the central job of the canon by Cobb and his team, including Eames, on the heir to an energy empire. (Eames had been part of a team that had previously tried inception but had been unsuccessful.)

Personality:

"Roguish" is probably the best way to describe Eames on first encounter. He is charming, capable of saying the right thing at the right time, witty and easy-going. But unless he's putting a particular effort into playing the upright, honest citizen, there's always something faintly disreputable about him as well. There is a lot of truth to this initial, outward appearance; however, it is far from the whole truth.

The cornerstone of Eames's personality is that he is extremely intelligent. Well-read, well-educated, and street smart to boot, Eames can debate, plot, and plan with the best of them and is at least as good at thinking on his feet and improvisation. Eames values intelligence in others and particularly enjoys creative, imaginative thinking. He is not as taken with sorting out practicalities as he is with the more theoretical and abstract kinds of thought/discussion and pretends to find people who are obsessed with practicalities dull, though deep down he has a certain amount of respect for people who can manage what he doesn't have the patience for.

The main reasons he doesn't have the patience is because Eames is very easily bored. Being as smart as he is means that very few puzzles or problems take long to solve and so Eames is left always searching for something new to entertain him, a new challenge to take apart. Happily, Eames is also an extremely curious person and as such, secrets of all sorts, big and small, and things which have never been done before both fascinate him. This -- plus the decent living he can make at it -- is his primary motivation for being involved in dreamshare and theft.

Eames is particularly curious when it comes to other people. He is extremely observant and good at reading people and enjoys the challenge of figuring out what people are thinking, what they like and what they don't, what motivates them, what they secretly desire, etc. When it comes to studying a person, the impatience that Eames sometimes displays toward other things in life vanishes, and he can be extremely focused.

In part, this facility with people is a big contributor to why Eames can be so externally charming when he chooses. Because he can read people so well, Eames is capable of determining the right things to say and the best ways to win a person over or convince them of whatever he needs to convince them of, a talent that he puts towards being an excellent liar and con-artist.

Despite that, Eames doesn't often bother to smooth over the more abrasive sides of his personality when he's not on the job. Eames is aware that he's smart and doesn't have much time for people who aren't. He has a more than healthy opinion of himself and gets prickly when other people attempt to poke too many holes in his ego. He is also extremely quick to voice his opinion and often doesn't bother softening it so that he can come off quite sarcastic, cutting and condescending.

Although not quick to really anger, Eames does have a fierce temper when its roused. Even furious, though, Eames can be difficult to read. His ability to observe and read others actually extends to himself as well, and Eames is both exceedingly self-aware and pragmatic. He plays his real emotions very close to his chest, often choosing to project something that he's not feeling (like smiling when he's at his angriest). Though self-aware, Eames often isn't actually capable of keeping himself from doing dumb things, however; he just understands that he's doing something dumb as he does it. But he is able to keep cool when he needs to, whether its in a crisis or a moment of real physical danger.

Eames's many less agreeable qualities are balanced out somewhat by some strong agreeable ones. Eames is, other than the above, genuinely easy-going. He jokes readily -- albeit often at the expense of others. He takes real pleasure and amusement out of a lot of his job and is actually a bit of a hedonist, seeking out new ways to enjoy himself and reveling in those he's already found.

Additionally, he enjoys at least some of the people he works with. He respects and admires people who challenge him or, at the very least, can keep up with him. He goes to great lengths to keep the degree to which he respects and likes people under wraps, but the truth is that underneath his roguish exterior, Eames isn't such a bad guy. Egotistical, selfish, and a bit of a dick, yes, but he is also capable of caring about people quite genuinely and looking out for their well-being. He would just rather most people not know that.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions:

Forger, mimic. As noted above, Eames is a forger in dreams, capable of altering his physical appearance and voice as he wants to either impersonate real people or to create a fictional identity. Although this is a purely dream-based skill, it has basis in real world skills. Eames is a good mimic and actor, having the observational skills and the patience to learn how to copy another person's gestures, posture, intonation, etc. This is what allows him to properly impersonate real people in dreams.

In addition, Eames is also a traditional forger. He is good at copying handwriting and signatures and can create fairly exact copies of documents and objects.

Liar, thief. More than most of the other Inception characters, Eames is a consummate criminal. His reputation for being a thief goes hand in hand with his reputation as a forger. He can pick pockets, cheat at cards, and spin a con as readily out of a dream as in. After what is likely years and years of practice, Eames is also an excellent liar. His is quick on his feet and, thanks to his acting skills, quite convincing, making it hard to catch him out on a lie when he's really trying.

Firearms, explosives, and hand-to-hand combat. Although only ever seen within a dream, Eames displays obvious knowledge of how to use firearms and explosives and how to fight hand-to-hand when necessary as well.

Bad at spelling and math. Eames has plenty of personality-based flaws that keep him human, if not humble, but as far as stand-alone weakness go, his main issues are that he is known for occasionally misspelling things -- which is a bit of a problem when part of your living is made off of forging documents -- and that he has never been any good at math.

Appearance: Outside of dreams, Eames is canonically portrayed by Tom Hardy. He has short-ish brown hair, generally worn in a side part; blue-grey eyes, and a build on the heavier, broad side without being obviously muscular while clothed. He usually has a level of scruff, though never anything that amounts to more than stubble. He embraces a British ex-pat tourist sort of aesthetic in his clothing, opting for tweeds and bright colours when jobs don't require him to dress more particularly.

As noted, within dreams, Eames is a forger and can vary his appearance entirely.

Age: I tend to slot Eames into his mid-30s. The shooting script pegs him as in his forties but was also written prior to Tom Hardy (then 33) being cast, so I halve the difference and say 35-37.

du Pré is calm consistency compared to her little brother's more temperamental moods. in fact, very little rattles du Pré or shocks her or disturbs her or frightens her or amuses her. while du Pré holds a firm and sincere belief in their mission, it -- like all else -- is not something she is passionate about. cool and detached, du Pré relies on her eye for detail, a piercing question, and that unshakeable calm to carry out her work and steer Cello's violent outbursts to their intended purposes and to keep those outbursts from becoming self-destructive. she can fake enthusiasm when she needs to, but little stirs du Pré's interests beyond the twin responsibilities of taking care of her little brother and seeing God's work get done.

It might've made his short temper even shorter than it used to be, it might get him into even more trouble than before, but it's definitely more fun.
