When James Iain McLean first arrived in Lithuania a little more than three years ago, he knew almost nothing about the country. Today, he is studying in the Master’s study programme ‘Languages and Cultures of the Nordic and Baltic Sea Region’ at Vilnius University, and now speaks fluent Lithuanian. He says he admires the local nature and language and is in no hurry to leave the country, as he feels happy here.

A few weeks ago in Graz, Austria, Vilnius University (VU) graduate Aušridas Bakšanskas was awarded his Master’s degree. Reflecting on his two years in the European Studies programme, he says the experience allowed him to discover Europe up close – not only through academic discussions with international students and teaching staff but also beyond the classroom, by travelling and exploring new places. Having studied at four European universities, the VU alumnus notes that the programme fosters critical thinking, encourages openness, and provides a broad and diverse knowledge base.

At Vilnius University (VU), students gain a strong foundation for their future careers and are often encouraged to take the first steps on their professional path. One example is Gustavo Adolfo Mota Salinas, who came to Lithuania from Mexico to pursue a Master’s degree in Finance and Banking. While still a student, he was hired by ‘Western Union’, and later, during his doctoral studies, advanced to the position of senior data scientist. According to Gustavo, VU not only boosted his confidence but also equipped him with knowledge he could successfully apply in his job.
