Hello, guys and dolls! Remember me? Perhaps not. That's okay. I've been out of the icon-making practice for some time, thanks to my losing a version of Photoshop that doesn't freeze every five to ten minutes.

These aren't much, but I made a bunch of Achewood icons to amuse myself because I've just recently discovered this enjoyable little web comic. It is about an innocent romp through the lives of several cats and a group of stuffed animals. And when I say 'innocent', I mean 'not at all oh god don't let kids read it'. Here is the comic's website.

opiumgaze: Flight of the Conchords, David Bowie + various [21]

Last night was the finale of Flight of the Conchords' TV series. Since I will miss it, and since I'm going to see them next month(!), I thought I'd whip up a few icons - just photoshoot pictures, and one from S1 of their show. Also, just 'cause I love them.

They were kind of a quick project, so they're not the best thing ever, but hopefully you'll enjoy them. :)

Also, since I was still feeling icon-y after originally making these, I made a few other various icons. Some David Bowie, and a few other musical acts. So yeah!

Back in the early days of my well-noted adoration of Rufus Wainwright, I made a moodtheme. This served me very well for a long time but, between my domain expiring and computer switches, I managed to lose it. As such, I have gone without a mood theme for some time now. Sad, I know!

But not anymore! I took up the project of making a newer, better(!) Rufus moodtheme. This one, for fun, is all black & white. I made it for myself, but I thought I'd throw it up here in case anyone else is interested in using it.

Hello, community!

Apparating is undergoing some major design changes at the moment. There is a new user info page and layout in place, and I'm going to work with Lisa and Leslie to get all of the entries tagged so it's easier for you to find things.

Tutorial: Colouring Using Variations [PS CS2 w/ .psd]

I decided to make a tutorial after making an icon and realizing I was very fond of the colouring. It's actually similar to the colouring technique I use on a regular basis, so this is my two cents on an alternative to icon colouring.

Difficulty: Easy to medium. It's best if you know the basics of your graphic program but I tried to explain things in as much detail as I could. Please note that I made this tutorial using Photoshop CS2. I'm sure it can be translated in some extent to other Photoshop programs, but I have no experience with PSP. There is a selective colouring step, but it's optional. I've included a .psd for the basic layers used.

Open the image you want to use. I used this image of Helena Bonham Carter [reduced in size for bandwidth purposes]. Next, you'll need to crop the image to an appropriate icon size. Choose a cropping method that suits you best.
Once it's properly sized, it's time to begin some basic editing before experimenting with significant colour changes. Most of my icons start out the same way. I use the Levels tool [Image >> Adjustments >> Levels] in the RGB channel. I slide the midtone arrow, the middle arrow, to the left. In this case, I used the following input settings: 8/1.87/255. Don't worry about the washout or lack of contrast at this stage. It's actually beneficial for the colouring technique I like to use. The last thing I do at this stage is lower the saturation slightly [Image >> Adjustments >> Hue/Saturation]. It doesn't need to be toned down too much, just enough so the colouring isn't overwhelming when it's added. I took it down to -15 for this particular icon.
The next step is to add the main chunk of colouring to the icon. Lately I've been using the Variations tool [Image >> Adjustments >> Variations] almost exclusively. You can experiment with specific colour combinations later, but right now it's time to get to it. First, duplicate your base so you have two copies of it. On the bottom base, I'm going to use the following Variations setting: More Red once and More Yellow once. On the copy of your base, you'll have to make sure that the Variations tool is back to it's default setting after the adjustments you made to the first base. You can do this by selecting Original in the Variations window. Now you can choose the adjustments for the copy; this time I used More Cyan twice and More Blue twice. The last step at this stage is to change the base copy's blending mode to Overlay.
Sometimes I finish an icon at this stage after sharpening or other minor tweaks if they're needed. In this case we're going to keep going. Between the base and the base copy, insert three blank layers. Fill the top and bottom blank layers with a dark blue (I chose #050756). I set the top blue layer to Exclusion and the bottom blue layer to Difference. You can adjust the opacity of each layer as needed, but I chose to leave them at 100%.
Now it's time to fill the middle blank layer [it should be the only blank layer at this point]. I'm going to choose a very pale pink [#ffd4ca], fill the layer, and set the blending mode to Colour Burn. This time, I'm going to reduce the opacity to 65%. Now it's time to merge all of the layers together.
What you do at this point is really up to you. You could finish the icon now, or you can make some other small adjustments. PSP users aren't able to use the Selective Colouring tool, but I like to use it from time to time. I made some changes under the Reds and Greens channel. The key is to not overdo it.
Now I think I'm happy with this icon. If you want to add text or sharpen, this is the last stage and the best place to do so. I use the Unsharpen Mask, save, and there we have it. You can download the .psd file if you need a reference.
