Apotheneum (meaning “place of divine elevation” in Greco-Latin) is a building-scaled multi-sensory visual, sonic, and haptic instrument designed for contributing light and sound artists to transport visitors through participatory immersion.

Comprised of two nested chambers made of back-to-back LED nets sponsoring 26,560 total light nodes, Apotheneum presents four independent canvases—two per volume—and an immersive four-channel sound system for our collaborating audiovisual artists to program, and/or play live.

Measuring 40 x 40 x 40 feet, Apotheneum's cubic antechamber envelops a thirty-foot cylindrical "inner sanctum" that opens to the sky. This inner chamber is anchored by a 24-foot hexagonal haptic “bed” 18 inches tall, made of 96 triangular tiles under which dmx-powered servo motors emit vibration and light, on its own programming, and/or in sync with the light and sound.

Having completed a successful inaugural run at Burning Man 2025, and been since deployed as an official exhibition at Art Basel Miami through our partner, Art With Me, Apotheneum is a multi-year project that will evolve alongside a growing list of collaborators, content, and hosted venues.

To our ancestors, the Empyrean was known as “the highest heaven”. It was thought to be home to celestial beings made of pure light—the source of all creation.

In 2023, we gifted a light and sound art installation to the citizens of Black Rock City, officially placed by Burning Man’s ARTery, and called it the Empyrean Gate.

A sixty-foot diameter shade structure, hosting 25,600 LEDs arrayed in 64 spokes and 8 surround sound speakers, was lofted twenty feet in the air, its 13-foot center void aimed at the Empyrean.

At night, video and sound sequences curated from artists worldwide provided visitors with one of two immersive experiences. A 13-foot stage and twelve radially arrayed double hammocks provided choice vantage points.

From midnight to 8am, hour-long downtempo sequences such as Tibetan throat singing, Renaissance choral music and Gregorian chants, paired with slow-moving video, invited meditative contemplation.

From dusk until midnight, an adjacent sound stage created by SRQ Beats of Sarasota, FL hosted visiting DJs who spun to the backdrop of energetic LED sequences, turning the Gate into a dance venue.

Located near Esplanade and 2:45, on ‘Playa’ adjacent to Entheos Village, it drew as many as 300 participants and a dozen ‘art cars’ at a time, every night of the annual event.

The Empyrean Gate was beta-tested at Black Rock City in 2022 and again at unSCruz in 2023 before making its full debut at Burning Man 2023, and at Love Burn in 2024.

Designed for Burning Man's 2024 Temple, the Sacred Grove is a stand of 80 “trees” supporting 184 “branches”, inside of which a series of spaces have been created for both individual and collective mourning, tribute, connection and renewal.

Based on our earliest sacred spaces before the language of religious structures supplanted them, sacred groves were common across global cultures. Their names and rituals varied, but all were considered magical places of healing and power. The sacred grove is a return to that common, pre-urbanized past.

SEED House is a partnership between established leaders in the farming, real estate, finance, design, engineering, construction, policy and technology space. We have come together as an integrated team to study a number of interrelated problems in agriculture, the economy, the environment, urban resilience, and human health. To spur innovation in this context, SEED House develops, designs, and engineers urban food ecosystems in city centers.

Our first such development — SEEDOne® — is set to become Montréal’s first urban food ecosystem, and combines hospitality, indoor agriculture, and life sciences into a first-of-its-kind public-access destination.

I used to draw - a lot. At one point, living in Italy, from 1990-91, I engaged in open-ended self-portraiture. Here are some of those images, from my sketchbooks.

Why include them on this site? Drawing remains our most intuitive and revelatory tool. Moreover, portraiture is ‘architecture of the body’, and is a common tool for practitioners to train and communicate how we ‘see’.

Steel, Glass, and Wood

Kulindros is a chess set that employs a consistent one-inch cylinder made of a base material, to which a single act of 1/4” cuts is applied to create the thematic variation between each piece. Some pieces receive a ‘flourish’ of a contrasting material. The goal was to render legible the common Medieval English motif of soldier (pawn), horse (knight), rampart (rook), cleric (bishop), and female & male regents (queen & king), using an economy of “moves”.

Comprised of stainless steel and frosted glass, each set reverses base and flourish materials to achieve the desired results.

The board, rendered in neutral wood, contains spaces (“squares”) marked by one of the two base materials as is common, mostly for the benefit of the bishops.

Heat-strengthened float glass & wine bottle

Designed and built while I was a student at RISD, this vase is an homage to the repurposing of the wine-bottle-as-vase traditionally seen in French cafés. Here, it was deconstructed so that a single flower could be A: held and B: fed. The vertical planes of glass are the exact dimension of a standard Bordeaux wine bottle. Their interior faces have been frosted. The neck of a wine bottle has been repurposed, as has one segment of its body, the identical width of the neck. Both elements are sandwiched between the panes of glass, to hold the neck and base of the flower. When wet, the frosted areas become transparent, revealing the bottom of the stem, while the rest of the flower remains obscured and in fact accentuated by its shadows. Only the bloom of the flower is visible in full, while the natural curvature of the flower’s stem creates a pleasing contrast with the rigid linearity of the vase’s sides.
