Now he was bored as fuck.

That’s where we begin.

This is the prologue to *Hasan i-Sabah: The Founding of the Sultanate of Baboob* — a historical novel about the man who hijacked a branch of Islam, built an unassailable fortress in the mountains of Persia, and created a community so devoted that his enemies called them the Assassins.

This book is special for more than a few reasons.

I am dropping the audiobook prelude for all of my subscribers. You don’t want to miss this. There are secrets being revealed in this text and in the subscriber sections of these posts. Valuable secrets. Things that will translate into this world. Once I was at the place where reality was distinctly distorted she parked me upstairs in the guest bedroom where William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin built a dream machine for her. The record it was playing was Burroughs voice talking about Hasan I Sabah and nothing is forbidden and everything is allowed and discussing control systems and the mechanisms of societal control.

I guess it locked in somewhere. And that’s fine. In fact, saying it out loud is liberating and feels good. What didn’t feel good was knowing it deep inside and either one pretending it wasn’t true or even worse believing it wasn’t true and then trying to figure out what it was about me that was unattractive enough to explain a lot of the things that simply being an unattractive man explains.

My brother and slightly older cousin growing up - they were both ultra-handsome. Chick magnets. Taller, more slender, natural athletes, dark hair and eyes. I looked at them and thought I was the same but got really different results. Haha.

The pretending part though, that was the worst - especially when truth would hit harder than usual - in the last video I mentioned the woman who said “if only you were tall and handsome’ ouch. There was a time in a parking lot in Oregon, I was feeling good, beautiful day, everything fine but then this tall handsome hippie guy in the parking lot decided it would be funny to tell me (and the world - loudly) what a handsome and good looking man I was. “You’re so good looking man. You’re beautful.” He wouldn’t stop. It wasn’t like he was gay, he was making a joke of my unattractiveness and it stung - bad - even more than twelve years later. Now, somehow, it doesn’t any longer, just by me saying it. What a prick though.

It wasn’t just him. I was a a VW Vanagon event and my ex-wife and I met this nice couple in the van next to us. Me and the guy were drinking beers and then he thought it would be funny to start talking about how I was as handsome as Brad Pitt. Yeah, I joked, I self-deprecated, I laughed, but it stung. I’m not and it was clear that the joke was that.

Now though? Fuck it. I’m 54 years old, divorced, living a pretty great life on my own terms, doing things I want to do, building things that I think the world needs, creating art and writing that makes me feel good, learning how to do new things. I’m not rich. I’m not tall. I’m not handsome. I’m not superfit or superfine. I’m just me and I’m fine with it. I’ve met a handful of women who were beautiful on the outside and beautiful on the inside who didn’t care about that. I’ll meet more. And for those who don’t look past it? What can I say? I like beauty too. I get it. No judgment.

A word for the tall, handsome men out there though - you got handed a cheat code in life and I see so many of you who don’t recognize that. You act like babies or assholes and somehow it all gets forgiven - but I’ll tell you this - a little gratitude for what you have. could go a long way. And a bit of empathy for those who don’t. I’ve met a lot of tall handsome dudes who are just as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside, but I’ve met far more of the spoiled baby type who shit on the world and expect it to wipe their asses. That’s a shame. Maybe it’s the same with women.

I don’t know.

So please, don’t try to tell me I’m handsome. Don’t mock me for being unattractive - even in a way that compares me to Brad Pitt or sounds like you are telling the world how beautiful I am. Also - please don’t compare me to actors that look like me - just compare me to me - because frankly, I’m pretty great and far better than I used to be. I don’t care. I’m indignified.

It was a challenging year on many levels. I feel like I’m moving into next year as an improved and more aware human being than I’ve ever been. Even watching this video now, I’m a little bit cringed by my pettiness and insecurity, but if you don’t look in the mirror, you never see the mud on your face.

I highly recommend that all of you create goal sheets. There are lots of different templates out there. Mine is simple.

Name the Year. Create an overriding goal or theme for the year.

Break goals down into categories. Health, Wealth, Family, Work etc

Set deadlines for goals that need it. Make the other ones vague. There are lots of different templates out there depending on how you want to do it. I just use a Google Sheet.

Check in quarterly and see how you are doing. I personally check in on the solstices and equinox. So Mar 21, Jun 21, Sept 21, Dec 21. I count the period of 12/21 to 1/2 as a sort of reflections time when I can put together my goal list for the coming year and think about what worked or didn’t work for me in the past year.

My Successes for 2025:

* I came to know myself better than ever. My strengths, my weaknesses, my vulnerabilities, my insecurities, my super-powers. I can look myself in the mirror and honestly see who I am and like myself despite my flaws. I know that I can become a better version of myself.

* I am closer to knowing what I want and need to be happy in this life.

* My daughter knows that she is loved, she knows that she is valued, and she knows that she always has a place in the world and people who will love her for being exactly who she is at any given time, unconditionally.

* I wrote one new book published another that has been a long time coming, and worked with my agent and publisher to increase my visibility and image as a writer and creator

* I made friends all over the world. I traveled in five countries and felt at home in all of them. I ate food that TV shows could be made about. I learned about tea, coffee, food, alcohol, cultures, fashion, and subcultures and somehow managed to be a part of all of those things.

* I improved my health. I’m healthier today than I was a year ago.

* I gained new skills and understanding. My Japanese improved. I traveled and discovered many wonderful things in Hokkaido and in Japan.

* I planted, grew, harvested, and cooked food from Satoshi Manor and shared it with guests.

* I hosted guests from seven countries (maybe more) and also hosted several old friends from the USA.

* I created a lot of art and wonderful gardens. I improved my house.

* I survived both financially and physically.

* I learned a lot about friendship, what a friend is and isn’t and about relationships and what they can be and what they can’t be.

My Failures for 2025: (In terms of the goals I set)

* I did not pay off my debts.

* I did not earn significant income.

* I did not buy a house or land in Hawaii.

* I did not progress as much as I wanted in Japanese or other languages.

* I was lazy about exercise, study, and music (playing the uke) . I did not take a yoga class, learn to surf while I was in Hawaii, or lose enough weight to be at my physical peak for this age.

* I allowed myself to wallow in self-pity and to engage in self-hatred behaviors that didn’t do me any good and actually did me harm. In this sense, I wasn’t a very good Baoist because I was doing TOX and avoiding ROX.

This is a public episode. It’s historic, it’s lively, and it’s… well, a bit on the touristy and expensive side. Still, if you approach it with curiosity (and an empty stomach), there’s plenty worth sampling. I gladly spent about $30 trying a bit of everything.

INDIGNIFIED: I lead a free, creative, & powerful life. I want to share it with you - and how you can live this way too. Then came the star of the market, the legendary bindae-tteok. These mung bean pancakes are made right in front of you from soaked and freshly ground beans mixed with vegetables, then fried until the outside crackles. They serve it with a sweet–salty–sour dipping sauce of soy, vinegar, and pickled onions. Imagine a giant hashbrown, thicker, softer inside, and more flavorful—that’s bindae-tteok at its best.

I followed that with a sweet stuffed pancake, which hit the spot, and then a honey-garlic-cheese “garlic boy bread,” which could have been great if it hadn’t crossed the line from moist into downright soggy. We rounded things out with kalguksu and mandu, the knife-cut noodles and dumplings Korea is known for.

From there, Myeongdong, Seoul’s mecca for shopping, skincare, and cafés that are more about vibes than beverages. We stopped at a place called SANS and ordered a “coffee” that was… not exactly coffee. It wasn’t great, but the staff looked like they’d stepped out of a runway show, so the visit wasn’t a total loss. Sometimes atmosphere does half the work.

This is a public episode. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

There are a couple of things most visitors to Oahu notice pretty quickly. The first is that on Oahu there are homeless people pretty much everywhere. Go for a drive and you see them wandering down remote roads, sit at a stoplight and you see them on the corners, go in the mall, the library, the grocery store, Waikiki Beach and you see them. Those are just the visible homeless, the crazy ones that don’t give a flying fuck any longer. The invisible homeless are living in cars, working, camping discretely. Only the wealthy can afford to live in Hawaii and enjoy a Hawaii lifestyle. Those with good jobs, trust funds, or a single, unencumbered lifestyle living with roommates and no chance of ever owning a home of their own. The rest of Hawaii works two to three jobs just to keep a rented or bank owned roof over their family’s heads.

I got ahead of myself. Visitors notice the homeless. It would be impossible not to. They also notice the homeless sitting and sleeping at every bus stop. They notice the not very efficient public transportation and if they pay close attention, they notice the gleaming Hawaii Area Rapid Transit system which goes from a station in a part of town that most people never need to go to all the way out to a station in the middle of a pineapple field that no one ever needs to go to. In between are the airport, a community college, and a couple of towns that most people will never visit. Does it go to Waikiki? Nope. Does it go to Ala Moana Center? Nope. The Convention Center? Nope. The North Shore? Nope. The resort areas on the West Side of the island? Nope. The center for government and administration? Nope. The University of Hawaii? Nope. Are there huge parking lots for commuters? Nope. The military bases? Sort of - it has a stop near Pearl Harbor.

My intent was to take the train from end to end and to stop and get lunch at one of the terminus areas. Guess what? Closest restaurant was fast food and more than a kilometer away. Were there station shops? Nope. Was there a nearby convenience store for a bento, a bottle of water, or a snack? Nope. Were there plenty of security guards to keep the homeless from using the train as a $3 shelter. Yup. Were there plenty of homeless around the stations. Yup.

I love rail. I love public transport. I’ve long been a supporter of this project because the idea of tourists able to board at the airport and take the train to their hotels in Waikiki or on the West Side is a good one. The idea of students being able to ride from communities to the UH Manoa campus is a good one (to be fair it does go to the UH West Oahu campus, but I didn’t see students boarding or getting off there - I didn’t really see anyone on the train and it was a Monday at prime time. ) The idea of locals being able to take the train to places they want to go is a good one. I live in Japan. I use trains all the time. I travel all over the world, I use trains all the time. Trains are useful. They are cool. They are enjoyable and environmentally friendly.

They had to work really hard to make this one as useless as it is while spending as much time and money as they did. Maybe long term they will fix these things and work it out - but somehow, I think this train to nowhere will never reach a destination that is worthwhile.

Tens of billions of dollars. More than ten years. What if that money had been spent on housing and treatment for the homeless? What if it had been spent to give opportunities to Hawaii people? What if it had been spent to build a train from the airport to Waikiki to UH Manoa?

Well, it wasn’t. And I have no idea how that happened?

Actually, I know exactly why this happened. America is profit driven and greed fueled. A small number of people made lots of money from this. They're the ones who made this happen. That’s how the United States of America works. Not solving problems but creating them and then profiting from them.

This is a public episode. Some of them look as fabulous as they tasted, some look better, some don’t look as good. One thing for sure, the people I shared those meals with were the real treasure, although, far too often, I end up eating wonderful things all by myself.

So, as you watch this fabulous piece of food porn generated over the past sixteen months, please pay homage to the ingredients (sometimes from my garden or larder), the chefs (sometimes it’s me), and the locations.

Food is one of life’s great joys. I admit that sometimes I indulge too much, but how can one not? Especially given the spectacular flavors, combinations, and culinary traditions of the places I am so fortunate to live and travel.

I am so fortunate to have been handed Anthony Bourdain’s book by that beautiful woman. I was looking through my photos and realized that for some unknown reason, I keep taking pictures of statues that I will likely never do anything with. So, in true laminate style, I’ve attached them to the first podcast I ever did way back in 2004 which opens and ends with some of the first songs I ever wrote or recorded from that same period. Listening to it - I can’t believe how energetic and confident I sound. I’ll be honest, the world has really kicked my ass and I need to get back to find that guy who was brimming with optimism and enthusiasm. Maybe it’s time to start podcasting again.

It’s funny to think about, but I was a pioneer in podcasting. One of less than 10,000 on the planet. As to the quality of my podcast or the quality of my music, or the quality of the version of Slackville Road that I read (it was a much older version than is currently published more than twenty years later), I will let you be the judge. I tend to judge myself rather harshly, so that’s for the best.

Maybe this paints a way forward for me - people seem to like my Letters from Exile on Tuesdays. Maybe it’s time to create a Podcast from Exile on Thursdays. We’ll see - for now it remains The Laminate.

This is a public episode. This reaction surprised me. My answer was probably a bit disappointing. I saw the Lanyu was larger than Green Island which most of the tourist sites recommended going to. It also wasn’t on any of the lists and it offered a ferry from one place and a different ferry to another on the Taiwan mainland that happened to fit well with my direction of travel. That was really it.

What I didn’t know was just how frustrating and cool Lanyu would be. Here are three very important tips for Lanyu.

1) Don’t expect to be able to use credit cards or ATMs (ie bring plenty of cash - including for the ferry tickets)

2) Unless you have a motorcycle endorsement on an IDP (international driving permit) the shop owners will not rent you a scooter - and really, you need a scooter to enjoy this island.

3) Sunscreen is a necessity - there is very little shade to be had. And bonus tip - a clove of garlic can help resolve sea sickness which you are bound to experience (at the very least some queasiness) on the ferry trip.

INDIGNIFIED: Learn how to live free, creative, & powerfully. is a reader-supported publication. A friend recently said to me that “Just because plans don’t always work the way you want, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make plans” and while I kind of agree with her - I also kind of don’t.

Making plans sets you up for having those plans be disrupted. If I’m honest, that’s a personal failing because when I make plans, I tend to also set expectations. It’s kind of the opposite of ‘Be Here Now’ which is a pretty good summation of how to be happy in just three words.

I once figured out the feeling of happiness. It was simple but hard to execute. You put yourself in one place, grounded - and then at the same time you put yourself in another distant place so that you aren’t actually in the place you are grounded at all while still being completely there. It’s like letting the light wind at sunset carry you from the rooftop you are sitting on to the distant place where the sun is kissing the horizon. You are there but also you are not - and maybe that’s the actual key. You are not. In happiness, we tend to lose our sense of self and just be.

So, plans. I don’t really like them. I understand why they need to happen and are important but I tend not to be an over planner. In my writing I am what’s called a ‘pantser’ - I don’t start with a detailed outline, I let my characters tell the story as they discover themselves and the world they inhabit. It’s the same in my travel. I book a flight to Taiwan and then I start to make plans as I must. I came here not knowing much beyond my first few days in terms of where I would go or what I would do - and that’s because people….you never know who you will meet, who you will find connection with or who you won’t.

Hope is good. Expectations are not. So here I am, here, now.

There has been so much that I haven’t written about, so much that is impossible to write. Here’s a funny one though - last night I ate my favorite street food so far in Taiwan - and it’s hilarious.

Walking through the night market in Taitung I saw a burrito stand. It offered Spanish Pork. The owner was a Canadian named Gordon. So….burritos are Mexican or Californian, as far as I’m concerned. But I wanted something that appealed to my palatte. And that’s probably the issue with me and Taiwan food - my taste palette is simply too different. I like sweet, spicy, umami, and add a little sour. The Taiwan palette tends to be more savory, salty, bitter - at least from what I can tell so far. Gordon’s burrito hit the nail on the head for me, but there wasn’t another person waiting in the line of the busy night market.

It’s something else that surprises me about Taiwan - fruit. It’s just not that big a deal here and now I understand why. They don’t chase after the sweet like we do in Hawaii, Japan, or places like the Philippines. I’ve had ice cream here that was not what I would call sweet at all. Ice cream! And even the pineapple tends to be less sweet - so I think that I figured it out. The problem is me. As to whether I will actually try or like stinky tofu - that remains to be seen.

Now, time to go catch that ferry!

This is a public episode. I want to be clear - we are utilizing AI in the creation of this but no more than we are utilizing NFTs and our own imaginations.

All of this is born of early adopter technologists - coming together to see how we can bridge our passions for storytelling, fantasy worlds, technology, and more.

The above video is narrated by AI from Eleven Labs. The content was generated by Deep Seek from uploaded content that we created together using Claude with detailed prompts and very carefully defined rails. The stories themselves are born from a collaborative effort between many humans - guided primarily by me. We utilized AI generated anime characters that were minted as NFTs on the Lamina1 Network to form the basis of our story telling. The character images were created using NightCafe and were based on user input from the holders of another set of NFTs that I created (Lamsters) in an earlier effort at collaborative storytelling.

This whole process has been a multi-year endeavor by dozens of people - so please don’t make the mistake of thinking that the above genesis story of The Verse Layer as narrated above was something we just plopped into an AI bot and got the output from. This is what collaborative world building and story telling can look like.

Hundreds of hours. Dozens of people. Years. That is what it took to get the above - but I think it was worth it.

If you would like to be a part of this, we want you to be. Chinese visitors were an option that looked like they would fix the issue, but COVID and ongoing issues killed that opportunity.

Here is the biggest issue. The cost of living in Hawaii is extreme and tourism jobs offer bad pay in a job market that is already paying less than mainland wages and salaries. That’s called the ‘Paradise Tax’.

Here’s the unpopular truth: American tourists in Hawaii are universally known to be bottom tier tourists. Yes, there are wealthy Americans who spend big here but they are a minority. They were the demographic that I worked with when I lived here. The majority of American tourists are lower middle class, budget conscious, and trying to squeeze every penny of value they can out of their over-priced one or two week trip to Hawaii. The money they do spend largely goes to corporations that are not based in Hawaii and do not benefit local people. They are high impact in terms of noise and crowds, they are demanding, and they are generally not very good tourists in terms of their spend versus their impact. In tipping jobs, they are viewed as one tier above no-tippers and often end tours where guides rely on tips with a handshake and a “you sure are lucky to live here”.

They rarely book small tours or locally owned experiences. They book cheap package tours mostly owned by big corporations. The environmental impact is high on those tours.

Regulation is another issue. The regulations favor big business or ‘cowboys’ those who conduct tours or business illegally. Legit small operators get hit hard.

All of this does something else: local people are economically pressed hard. That makes it hard to bring an aura of ‘aloha’. The vibes are suffering. Also, when American visitors arrive and the demographics on the beach and in the hotel are west Florida centric (Americans - white, black, Latino) and the beaches are the same because Asian visitor numbers are so low, and local people are all working so that they can pay exorbitant rent and feed the families with insane grocery costs.

So if it looks like a Carolina, Texas, Alabama, or Florida beach town demographic but has a more expensive and longer flight and costs you three times as much for food or hotel - and the aloha isn’t flowing and the exotic flavor of the place is gone - why would you go? And if you do go - you will probably feel cheap and then not return.

So- Hawaii has a big problem. It was something that many in the tourism industry tried to address during the pandemic reset but which the tourism authorities ignored. Instead they focus on getting more and more people, lowering the cost of package tours, and demeaning the quality of life for both locals and tourists in the process.

This is a public episode. Satoshi Manor. It’s starting to come together quite nicely.

I’ve always been the kind of person who likes to learn things my own way. I’d rather try something and have it fail than have someone tell me something is going to fail. With gardening, it has always been that way for me. I try to learn from the land itself, try to use what is there, try to see what works and what doesn’t.

I’ve had a bunch of gardens and most of them have produced a surprising abundance of food even though I don’t do things the way I see others doing. I’m like that with other things too - art, guitar, writing, business.

The world hates when people like me do things like this. No one gets more upset than some expert who tells me a better way to weave a fence, a better way to germinate seeds, or a better way to prepare the ground.

I won’t be surprised if my garden has big problems as a result of my lazy man’s way of learning. I don’t even remember what seeds I planted where, In a few cases I was like - oh, I’ll plant some seeds in between the furrows too.

It’s likely that I will be gone from my house for part of the growing season, so I’m trying to account for how that will work too. This whole thing was a big junkyard overgrown with decades worth of weeds and all the neighbors trash in it less than a year ago.

At this point, I’ve turned it into a little bit of paradise - at least my definition of paradise. I’m hoping I can come up with a natural way to control the mosquito and bug populations. I’m working on it.

If you like this kind of content - please let me know.

This is a public episode.
