Thirty-three participants were recruited in this study to perform two daily repetitive patient transfer tasks while the full body movements were acquired using a set of magneto-inertial wearable devices. The use of wearable devices allowed for the estimation of the forces provoked on the lower back during the entire task performance. In postures where the forces exceeded the warning threshold found in the literature, healthcare workers were considered to have a greater risk of injury. Additionally, the maximum force exerted by each hand to avoid injury to the spinal column was also estimated. Knowing the key anthropometric variables associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) will enable engineers and researchers to design better assistive devices and injury prevention programs in diverse workplaces.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s23020658","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,1,9]],"date-time":"2023-01-09T06:38:27Z","timestamp":1673246307000},"page":"658","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["The Effect of Key Anthropometric and Biomechanics Variables Affecting the Lower Back Forces of Healthcare Workers"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"23","author":[{"given":"Xiaoxu","family":"Ji","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Biomedical Engineering, Gannon University, Erie, PA 16541, USA"}]},{"given":"Alexa","family":"Littman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Biomedical Engineering, Gannon University, Erie, PA 16541, USA"}]},{"given":"Ranuki Onara","family":"Hettiarachchige","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Biomedical Engineering, Gannon University, Erie, PA 16541, USA"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9258-8985","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Davide","family":"Piovesan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Biomedical Engineering, Gannon University, Erie, PA 16541, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2023,1,6]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1","DOI":"10.4102\/hsag.v25i0.1460","article-title":"Work-related musculoskeletal disorders amongst undergraduate nursing students at the University of Johannesburg","volume":"25","author":"Moodley","year":"2020","journal-title":"Health SA Gesondheid"},{"key":"ref_2","unstructured":"Bureau of Labor Statistics (2022, May 05).
