In the expanding field of printed electronics, Aerosol Jet Printing (AJP) appears promising to bring an improvement in resolution, miniaturization, and flexibility. In this paper, the use of AJP is proposed to design and fabricate customized electrochemical sensors in term of geometry, materials and 3D liquid sample confinement, reducing variability in the functionalization process. After an analysis of geometrical, electrical and surface features, the optimal layout has been selected. An electrochemical test has been then performed quantifying Interleukin-8, selected as reference protein, by means of Anodic Stripping Voltammetry. AJP sensors have been compared with standard screen-printed electrodes in terms of current density and relative standard deviation. Results from AJP sensors with Ag-based Anodic Stripping Voltammetry confirmed nanostructures capability to reduce the limit of detection (from 2.1 to 0.3 ng\/mL). Furthermore, AJP appeared to bring an improvement in term of relative standard deviation from 50 to 10%, if compared to screen-printed sensors. This is promising to improve reliability and repeatability of measurement techniques integrable in several biotechnological applications.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s18113719","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,11,1]],"date-time":"2018-11-01T11:31:47Z","timestamp":1541071907000},"page":"3719","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":48,"title":["Aerosol Jet Printed 3D Electrochemical Sensors for Protein Detection"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"18","author":[{"given":"Edoardo","family":"Cant\u00f9","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Information Engineering, University of Brescia, Via Branze 38, 25123 Brescia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7325-7988","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sarah","family":"Tonello","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Information Engineering, University of Brescia, Via Branze 38, 25123 Brescia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9161-3475","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Giulia","family":"Abate","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine, University of Brescia, Viale Europa 11, 25123 Brescia, Italy"}]},{"given":"Daniela","family":"Uberti","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine, University of Brescia, Viale Europa 11, 25123 Brescia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8629-7316","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Emilio","family":"Sardini","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Information Engineering, University of Brescia, Via Branze 38, 25123 Brescia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6497-5876","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mauro","family":"Serpelloni","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Information Engineering, University of Brescia, Via Branze 38, 25123 Brescia, Italy"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,11,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"8807","DOI":"10.1038\/srep08807","article-title":"An organic transistor-based system for reference-less electrophysiological monitoring of excitable cells","volume":"5","author":"Spanu","year":"2015","journal-title":"Sci.
