For fast AFC operation while eliminating the uncertainty of the initial phase relationship between the reference clock and voltage\u2010controlled oscillator output, two\u2010phase reference clocks are employed. The proposed AFC scheme is applied to a 2\u20136\u2009GHz frequency synthesizer. The frequency synthesizer is implemented in a 0.18\u2009\u00b5m complementary metal\u2013oxide\u2013semiconductor process and occupies 0.92\u2009mm<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>while the AFC occupies only 0.01\u2009mm<jats:sup>2<\/jats:sup>. The AFC operation is completed in less than 1.6\u2009\u00b5s.
