Let G be a simple graph of order n and \n<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/cplx21599-math-0001.png\" xlink:title=\"urn:x-wiley:10762787:media:cplx21599:cplx21599-math-0001\"\/> be the roots of its matching polynomial. The ME of G is defined to be the sum of the absolute values of \n<jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"graphic\/cplx21599-math-0002.png\" xlink:title=\"urn:x-wiley:10762787:media:cplx21599:cplx21599-math-0002\"\/>.
