marvel_100's challenge 32: crack but its not really that cracky...

“Um, excuse me?” Johnny looked up from the Rubik’s Cube he’d been messing with smoothly, making sure to maintain a balance between mild curiosity and inherent coolness that covered any of his eagerness at the unexpected female presence. “You’re Johnny Storm, right?” Mouth suddenly dry, he nodded and gestured for her to take a seat across from him. Excepting the invitation silently, she smiled and spoke again, “I’m from the Daily Bugle. My boss was wondering if the Fantastic Four would mind having an exclusive interview sometime this week. If something doesn’t come up, of course.” The young woman’s voice was soft, airy even, but confident and reminded him of someone for some reason, though he couldn’t pinpoint who. Oh well. Either way she was attractive with long dark brown hair and hazel eyes and Johnny had no intention of passing up a chance to take her out on a date later on.

“I don’t know about the others but I’m game. They’re supposed to be here soon, so why don’t you hang around for a bit? Say Miss, while you’re waiting can I get you anything? Like… coffee?” He must off came off sounding like a schoolboy with a crush or something or something because she smiled as if she was privy to some secret or inside joke.

“A latte would be nice.”

“Just a latte?” She tilted her head slightly while raising one of her eyebrows. Right, no obvious flirting then.

“Just a latte.”

“Be right back.” Grinning, Johnny hurried – not too fast, over eagerness won’t get you anywhere – to stand in line for her drink. Huh, he’d forgotten to ask her name… ah well, he’d get it, and a phone number, later.

When he returned with the pretty reporter’s latte, the others had already arrived. Johnny glared in annoyance when Ben turned to smirk at him. Honesty, they could have waited at least another ten minutes. Sue smiled in amusement as he set the drink in front of brunette next to him before taking a seat.

“Thank you.”

“No problem.” The other two men snickered. Narrowing his eyes a little, he stared suspiciously at them before asking, “Mind telling me what’s so funny?”

“I forgot to introduce myself…” Johnny blinked at the young woman next to him.

“So?” She sighed.

“I’m not a girl. The name’s Peter Parker, by the way.”

Johnny’s world screeched to a halt.
