End of the Year Meme 2016

This was a tough year for me personally as well as for the world but I come out of it even more grateful for all my friends and for fandom so thank you to everyone who was there for me in any small way and I wish everyone a happy new year and the best possible 2017!

1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?

Vote for a woman president! Saw the American Ninja Warrior finals live and met Jessie Graff. Other things I can't remember right now.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

No and yes. I would like to focus on making daily small steps with my goals which I've already been doing with the Habitica app which works well for me. So I would like to daily practice video editing, read classics, clip/vid, meditate and exercise.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Milly did and brought him to VVC :)

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My cat, Lana died the day after my birthday which was really tough for me. I really miss her :(

5. What countries did you visit?

None this year.

6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?

A lack of loneliness would be the biggest but I have high hopes that things will get better next year.

7. What date from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

November 8th (and the day after) for obvious apocalypse related reasons.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

More of a personal transformation in terms of more self-acceptance and letting go of regrets and fears about turning 30. Still working on that but I feel much better about it than I did earlier in the year. Also making all my vids.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not making enough career progress as I was distracted by other life stuff.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I think I had food poisoning once which was terrible but nothing beyond the usual coughs and colds.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

VVC, TGIF/F and Escapade costs as all those cons made me happy in their own special ways. Taking trips to visit friends as well.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

All my friends who were there for me this year. It was a tough year and it truly helped keep me alive and fulfilled.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

America (or almost half the people who voted and the ones who didn't vote) disgusted me with allowing Trump to be elected and the people who support or normalize him depress me.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Rent, food, vacations, cons and fixing tech.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

TGIF/F, VVC and seeing friends. Also Root/Shaw scenes when the show actually let them be together.

16. What song will always remind you of 2016?

This feels like cheating but GDFR (Goin' Down For Real). Also Break the Night With Color by Richard Ashcroft and Can't Stop The Feeling.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder? I want to say happier overall actually although sadder in some ways.
ii. Thinner or fatter? About the same.
iii. Richer or poorer? About the same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Learning, vidding, working out, hanging out with friends, dating.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Being lonely, feeling sad about the past, missing people and eating crappy food.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

I watched Citizen Knope (my fave Parks ep w/xmas theme), exchanged presents, read Yuletide fic, had dinner with family and family friends and watched Love Actually (annual movie which I have sooo many issues with but damnit love is my religion and the end gives me alll the feels with that airport scene).

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

Going to a NYE pyjama party with karaoke and dancing with my best friend.

22. Did you fall in love in 2016?

Yep. Don't do it kids haha *sigh*

23. How many one-night stands?

None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Sadly I don't have much of a favorite but I suppose the most enjoyable show of the last year was Gilmore Girls and Brooklyn 99.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Half of America haha. Or at least the alt-right ie neo nazis.

26. What was the best book you read?

That would be Uprooted which I know I should have read last year but I was glad to read it this year as it was really helpful to me at the particular time that I read it. It reminded me of the beauty of magic in all its forms and inspired me to get back in touch with my fantasy, magic roots. I also enjoyed The Raven Cycle books.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

This is hard because of vidding secrets but The Mowgli's are perfect happy music and I rediscovered Panic At the Disco which I saw an awesome concert of.

28. What did you want and get?

Spending time with friends...um other things that aren't coming to mind.

29. What did you want and not get?

Hilary becoming president, a job I enjoy and a romantic relationship.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Ghostbusters! HOLTZMANN!!!!!!!!! <3

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I turned 29 (and freaked out a lot about being so close to 30) and I went to the beach with a friend and had a great day hanging out with her.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Being successful career wise.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?

Comfy pants and t-shirt.

34. What kept you sane?

Friends, vidding and reading.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Kate Mckinnon is loooove <3

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

The election, stopping fascism, protecting everyone Trump is trying to destroy.

37. Who did you miss?

My friends and my mom.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I'm blanking right now but I will think on this.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016.

The world is not a fair place and things don't go as planned but I have to be grateful for what I have and accept who I am so I can let go of regrets and comparisons to others and make the best of what I do have. By working on becoming the best version of myself, I can make a real difference in the world instead of getting lost in disappointment and what ifs.

Every year, I think of examples for this and then I come up blank or I have to redact lyrics for various reasons. This feels especially the case this year. This one feels on the sadder side but it's true for various things in my life this year:

My favorite video this year (of my own)
Goin' Down For Real because while it took a lot of time, it made me really happy to see so many canon femslash pairings in a year that was terrible for us femslashers. I love watching it and it's just really sexy and gay which are two of my favorite things. I was really happy with how it turned out which is always important to me and I had a great time dancing to it at Club Vivid.

My least favourite video this year
I truly like all of my vids this year. If forced maybe Ready or Not just because I had limited time to make it and I wish I had more time to make a real Hamilton vid. BUT I REALLY LOVE HAMILTON and I enjoyed making the vid a lot so I truly love that vid too.

Most successful video
Most of my vids were successful as far as I am concerned but in terms of comments, Alive and Goin' Down For Real (the latter esp for online viewership).

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion
I was happy with the reception for all of them but I think Suffer deserves a little more love because daaamn they are too hot together and it's one of my favorite of my own vids to rewatch it all together in that vid.

Most fun video
This is hard because the process of making Headphones, Ready or Not, ILYSB, Goin' Down For Real and Suffer were all fun to make in many ways. But I guess in terms of fun overall...ILYSB. I had deadline stress but I was so in love with these two boyfriends that it didn't even matter and it's just a cute, shippy little vid.

Video with single sexiest moment
HOW TO CHOOSE???? Like almost all of Goin' Down For Real (esp the last third) and most of Suffer too. But the one moment I think of is the last clip in Suffer where Root runs her hand down Shaw's back cause DAMN that just gets to me. So I'm going to go with that.

Biggest vid fail
As usual, rushing to make vids to deadlines is a problem as it's hard to make the vids live up to my own standards but nothing major in terms of vids this year. I suppose I had an audio issue with Suffer at Vividcon but I fixed it for the online version so *shrugs*.

Hardest video to make
Goin' Down For Real because it was my first multi vid and it took FOREVER to find all the sources and get source for them and find femslash scenes from YT videos in the actual source. Plus I struggled trying to make it sexy and look good and all fit together. But it was worth the effort in the end and it came together like I hoped.

Most unintentionally telling video
Hahaha. This question is a little #tooreal for me this year for reasons I'm not getting into here but I'd say the trio of VVC vids were more personal than I thought and I saw a different layer to Delilah once I made it so let's go with that one.

Things I've learned
Some of it is hard to put into words but the things that stick out is how to make multi vids, getting better at making sexy vids, doing more with motion, dealing with different source sizes, a little progress on cutting fast and less applied but I've learned more about color this year.

Things to work on
I'm always trying to improve my cutting and expressing ideas in vidding the best possible way. I would like to improve my technical skills across the board from learning Premiere/AE better, learning more color with Davinci Resolve (it's FREE and professional color grading software) as well as learning more about compositing and visual design in general. I would like to learn how to clip and edit faster as I have too many ideas and it takes too long to vid and I think I've let inertia carry me along too long in my current process.

Vid projects I definitely want to get finished this upcoming year
My festivids assignment OF COURSE although I'm struggling with motivation with it right now. I'm worried it'll be a one vid (or two with a quick treat) Festivids year because I'm a bit overwhelmed with other non-vidding things right now. I am DETERMINED to finish a multi vid for VVC Premieres this year that's very important and meaningful to me but I am worried about time with it. I hope to have a TGIF/F vid but worry about time as I have another multi vid I want to make for VVC plus at least one CVV vid which I already started.

Resolutions for 2017
As always, try to start vid projects and make more consistent process so I'm not rushed at the end and can get more beta feedback. Habitica (habit app that a bunch of vidders use, lmk if you want a guild invite) has helped a lot with consistency but I need to improve with doing more each day versus all at once. I'm constantly struggling with when to say no to vid ideas in order to focus on the vid ideas I most want to make so I would like to keep trying to focus on my most important vids especially in the first half of this year. As mentioned above, get better technically as well as learn more about film and visual images to work more on how to create the most meaning and beauty from the imagery I work with. I'm trying to learn more about fan studies as I would like to make more vids about fandom in the future and it helps me get a better perspective on vids and fandom as a whole. Also try to be the change I want to see in the world and talk more about vidding as well as encourage others to talk about it. I miss when the vidding community used to post more about vids back in the golden age of LJ (siiigh end of an era now).

Dear Festividder,

Thank you so much for making me a vid! I am so excited to see what you come up with and I'm sure it'll be amazing. I love all kinds of music so follow your heart and what suits the vid for you. If you're looking for any guidelines, I tend to prefer indie pop, indie rock, hip hop, mashups, top 40, instrumentals, any kind of music that's emotional or that includes dynamic instrumentation. I love all kinds of vids, character studies, feels vids, shipper, meta, experimental, effects-y vids, dance-y vids, fast or slow, dark, angsty or happy. I am less into vids with dialogue within the vid but if you have a great idea for it, go for it (Uprooted is one where adding words from the book could be interesting)! Any rating or content is fine with me. If you need to use limited (not including Uprooted obviously) external source for your vid idea, I'm totally cool with that. I love Festivids so please enjoy yourself, I'm sure I'll love whatever you make!

Billy & Billie [TV]

I would most love a Billy/Billie vid but a character vid of either of them would also be wonderful! My favorite episodes are 4 and 10 and I love the shared history aspect of their relationship. I'm less into their work lives (and work friends although I do love Billie & Drew) except for the Billy/Billie scenes that involve them. Feel free to make something happy and shippy or dark and angsty or both!

Ghostbusters (2016) [Movie]

HOLTZMANN HOLTZMANN HOLTZMANN! She is everything and I am completely, hopelessly in love with her. Holtzmann has the most amazing visual energy onscreen and she is just made for vidding and I would love a vid of her that I could watch over and over again that captures her mad scientist ways and dynamic presence and oh yeah, THE GAAAAY. Speaking of, I am all for Holtzmann/Everyone (no men obviously) so give me all your Holtzmann/Patty, Holtzmann/Erin, Holtzmann/Abbey and any OT3/OT4 vids and I will be allll over that. I would also love to see an ensemble vid with the Ghostbusters being awesome and science-y and taking down ghosts. I'm super not into Kevin or any of the guys in the movie, it's all about the women for me so please focus on them. But basically, as long as Holtzmann is included in the vid in some way, I will be happy :)

Halt and Catch Fire [TV]

I would absolutely LOVE a character vid of Cameron who is the cool genius programmer of my dreams. Anything focusing on her being awesome with computers and/or handling her emotions and dealing with other people would be amazing. I also love Donna especially her rise to do her own thing in S2 and would love a vid focusing on that. A Cameron/Donna vid (platonic or romantic) would also be incredible as it's my favorite relationship on the show. I have a serious thing for Lee Pace and love how he infuses Joe with charisma and captures his desire to make a visionary product while struggling with his own demons. I do enjoy the Joe/Cameron relationship as well (Cameron/Tom is cute too) but don't like Joe/Sara so less of that. I hate Gordon (he's the woooorst) and would prefer to only include him as much as necessary in an ensemble vid or vid focusing on one of the other characters. I would love to see an ensemble vid about the work involved to create the Giant in a S1 vid or the struggles of creating Mutiny in S2. I'm not a fan of Joe and Gordon's plot in S2 (except for the Mutiny stuff) so would prefer less focus on that. I haven't seen S3 yet but I will by the time Festivids goes live so feel free to use that season if you'd like. A vid celebrating computers and their possibilities would also be awesome!

Hamilton (Broadway Musical) [Audio, Performance]

I still am in love with this musical and I think there's still lots of potential things to vid that would be amazing to see. I LOVE Hamilton so anything about his relentless drive and ambition to overcome obstacles and opposing views to leave his legacy would be incredible. I'd love character vids for Burr (WAIT FOR IT! feeels), Washington (HERE COMES THE GENERAL! honor feels), Angelica (so badass!), Laurens (idealist <3), Jefferson (so flawed but I can't help but love him and his intellect) and would also love to see a friendship vid for Hamilton, Laurens, Mulligan and Lafayette (+Burr?). I'm a big multishipper for this musical so you could make me super happy if you wanted to vid Hamilton/Laurens, Hamilton/Washington, Hamilton/Angelica, Hamilton/Burr, Hamilton/Lafayette, Washington/Lafayette, Hamilton/Jefferson(/Madison), Hamilton/Laurens/Eliza, Hamilton/Angelica/Eliza, Hamilton/Laurens/Lafayette and Hamilton/Washington/Lafayette (platonic or romantic is awesome for all of these!). I'd love an ensemble vid focusing on the REVOLUTION or on the politics of starting the country. Feel free to use external source, historical quotes/references/documents or anything else you might need to make a vid for the musical. Oh and I'm open to using any kind of music including the Hamilton cast recording, hip hop, any other musical or anything else you might want to use, don't limit yourself :)

Just Jillian [TV]

So I've been in love with Jillian Michaels since 2008 and I've listened to her podcast since then so when I heard she was doing a reality show about her real life that I've heard such amazing stories about, I was ecstatic. I absolutely loved the show and how it showed how hilarious, badass, sweet, awesome and gaaaay she is. I would really love a vid that focused on Jillian's life and highlighting her personality and overcoming the obstacles that come up for her. I think Jillian/Heidi are super cute and while I'd prefer the vid not focus exclusively on Jillian and her kids, her interactions with them are great as well so feel free to include them. A vid focusing on how hot Jillian is would make me super happy too so that would be amazing. It would also be fun to see a vid celebrating Jillian and any/all of her friendships (including Janice!). It's fine to use external footage if needed but please keep it focused on Jillian herself.

UnREAL [TV]

First of all, I am a HUGE Rachel/Quinn shipper so if you want to vid them (romantic or platonic), you'll make me super happy. I love everything about their relationship from the mentor/mentee aspect, the fucked up toxic aspect, the fun happy aspect and the mother-daughter aspect. That being said, I'm a huge fan of both Rachel and Quinn as characters and a character vid exploring their issues would be incredible. Another of my favorite characters is Jay and characters that I don't like are Chet and Jeremy so please avoid them. I prefer the S1 storyline to the S2 one quality wise but feel free to focus on either and go as meta as you like. Any kind of ensemble vid would be great!

Uprooted [Book]

The magic in this book touched me deeply and I would be so honored to receive any kind of vid for it. I would LOVE a vid about Agnieszka's magic and how it's connected to nature and the power that she gets from it. I ship Agnieszka/Kasia SO MUCH and would absolutely love to see a vid about them and the deep connection they share. I also love the complementary magic of Agnieszka and Sarkan's magic and how it becomes more powerful when they join it together so I would love a vid focused on that. Plus I ship Agnieszka/Sarkan too and I am completely for the OT3 so vids for either would be great. I would really love to see any vid exploring the themes and storyline of the book and I am excited to see what a vidder could come up with for this!

The Wire [TV]

I love this show completely but if you're looking for what I'd particularly love vids for, here are some suggestions: Randy, Stringer/Avon, Stringer/McNulty, Kima, Wallace, McNulty, Prez (particularly S4), McNulty/Kima (platonic), Snoop, Dukie, Michael, Omar/Brandon, Carter&Randy or Lester. I'd also love to see vids focused on Baltimore as a city (I LOVE cities) and I would die for a vid that's very meta about the show itself. This fandom needs ALL the vids so please, I'll take anything.

Vividcon 2016 Con Report (Part 2)

Here's my Vividcon 2016 Con Report (Part 1) here.

I tried remembering everything as best I can but if I made any mistakes, feel free to correct me! This goes for anything as I'd always like to improve :)

I was going to just go up to my room and decompress but was happy to join hollywoodgrrl, ohvienna, kiki_miserychic, thisiskis, khaleesian and cherry at the Thai place where I got some Pad Thai to go as I was still feeling full from snacks earlier. We had a fun conversation about fandom, vids and a little RL stuff and then I left to go back to my room to prepare for Club Vivid and talked a little with par_avion there. bessyboo had kindly invited me to join her Stars Wars cosplaying group so I went as Leia and bessyboo helped me do the hair up in her room. I was determined to get really drunk at CVV this year in part to relax my nerves after the panel anxiety and to just have an awesome time since I worked so hard on my CVV premiere (I joked it was like my premiere since it was happening on the usual Premieres night). I got a drink downstairs and ate a little food while talking to cee_m, kass, celli and others I'm forgetting (sorry!). I know I talked with jarrow about Unreal and that he was excited about my CVV vid since he loved the song which I was happy to hear.

I know sdwolfpup came in with her T-Rex costume and brought the house down cause it was SO AWESOME! The Joxer dance started soon after that and as always, it's SO fun to dance to and feel a part of this amazing community of people. I went to dance with bessyboo for her Star Wars vid that was her first CVV vid and as I suspected, it was SO MUCH fun to dance to with everyone and seemed to go over well. My vid was directly after though so I was a bit nervous but determined to dance and have fun to it. jarrow was right next to me and it was SO FUN to sing the lyrics together (even if I skipped the first verse and forgot to say, sorry!) and have someone beside me who loved femslash just as much (if not, more?) than I do. It was great to get to dance down low to the song as I had been imagining for months before while running to this song. Then once the vid finished, jarrow gave me a big hug followed by a bunch of people that I couldn't tell who because I couldn't see lol but let me know if it was you because it was one of my favorite Club Vivid memories ever :) Thank you to everyone who said nice things about my vid throughout the night!

Next I went over to dance with winterevanesce, bradcpu and milly as their vids premiered and were AMAZING! It was also great to see grammarwoman's women focused Star Wars vid and to top it off, she was wearing an awesome Ghostbusters costume :) I made sure to go over and dance with my fellow Glee lover, klb when my Glee, I Love It vid played (I don't know if this vid was put in regards to my panel but it was a nice touch if so!) and that was fun to see on the big screen again. Then it was great to dance to Paul McCartney again as it's one of my favorite CVV jarrow vids (there are many) and after that it was fun to dance with elipie to her fun Don't Trust the B vid (so weird to think that it's Jessica Jones now!). I did have a small badge malfunction and had to take a short break to find renenet who was super nice and helped get me a new one (don't put your phone in your badge while dancing is the lesson). Then I went over to dance with hollywoodgrrl, kiki_miserychic and ohvienna whose vid, Raspberry Swirl was amazing and I finally got to see understanding the context since I caught up with Outlander S1 before the con. It was also super fun to dance to the Person of Interest S&M vid which I was SO happy absolutedestiny put in (I requested it cause YAY POI ladies :D) to dance to especially to have Carter join the party. It was also super fun to dance to hollywoodgrrl's Pep Rally vid which is such an awesome Game of Thrones vid that makes me sooo happy and of course is amazingly well edited. Speaking of, kiki_miserychic's Laughing in the Sugarbowl vid blew my mind with the super fast, perfect editing and made Rogue Nation look like something I really had to watch.

I was super happy to get to rock out to violace's Mad Max vid and happy that fan_eunice appreciated my inability to contain my jumping feels. Definitely one of the highlights of CVV for me and then I was really glad to get to dance to the amazing Fan.tasia Disney movie vid that I've been watching a lot for my Disney feels. There was also a limbo bar at one point and that was fun to do lol. I don't remember when I talked to specific people but I know I talked with seekingferret and mediaopilus at some point as well as many others. I was SO glad to see seekingferret's West Wing Toby vid which gave me ALL THE TOBY FEELS (I have a lot) and then I really loved that absolutedestiny put in a 90's pop section with my fave artists as a kid: Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, N'Sync and it was super cool to see all the great vids play onscreen. It was really fun to dance to bradcpu and milly's Legends of Tomorrow vid and then it was SO great to come full circle and dance to sdwolfpup's Obama vid after I had such amazing memories of dancing to it in 2009 after he had first become president (and this time the vidder got to be here!). It was also super fun to dance to elipie's I Gotta Feeling Hamilton vids and celebrate allll the Hamilton feels with my fellow Hamilton fans.

The finale of dance vids is always amazing and I particularly loved dancing and singing the words to Uptown Funk (I missed my Jefferson vid but SOMEDAY as I told heresluck), Shut Up and Dance and Starships which is always the MOST amazing experience to share that love of spaceships and fandom and vids with a whole floor of fans dancing and singing along. I'm forgetting lots of individual fun memories and when they occured but there was some fun twirl dancing with thisiskis and there's an amazing feeling to get to just turn to people and sing the same lyrics along with them and know they love the song/vid/fandom/Club Vivid just as much as you do. It is truly a magical experience and I'm always sad when Can't Stop the Rock comes on. This was definitely in my top Club Vivids ever (it's a high bar) and it felt like it was a cleansing experience from the earlier anxiety and emotions of the day and it washed all of that away and made me feel a sense of deep belonging, joy, exhilaration and connection.

Afterwards, I started talking to frostfire, jarrow and killabeez and klb about TGIF/F and how amazing that was and will be next year when they add an actual vid dance party like Club Vivid. jarrow invited klb and me back up to his room to watch some of his Faberrycon videos which were so beautiful to see. We talked a lot about how to create community and improve the con experience at TGIF/F and made me even more excited to attend next year. It was an amazing conversation that I was so happy to share with them and then it was great to talk a little more with ride_4ever when she came into the room. I left to go back to my room late and I hoped I had drunk enough water to remain hangover free but it's always a risky proposition to drink a lot for me and I woke up that morning feeling terrible and of course had forgotten my Advil as I do almost every year :(

Anyways, I slept on and off but I had to make it to the Hamilton panel at 10am although I was too exhausted and sick to take notes (sorry!) which definitely cheered me up with the amazing sdwolfpup and heresluck leading the way with some great questions. They even showed two of the vids made for me (Jefferson Funk and Bang Bang) which made me super happy to see and I loved discussing why we love to vid Hamilton as well as some of the challenges of vidding it. Next up was the Let It Go panel about how to let go of vid WIPs where trelkez had great slides on the different stages and kinds of vid WIPs and we discussed various reasons and ways to let them go. It was especially fun to get to see the unfinished Catbaby sequel which was super funny even unfunished. For lunch, I went to eat in the House O'Meat with jetpack_monkey, echan, elipie, bradcpu, milly and cherry and we had fun talking about vids, the con so far, fandom and other things.

I headed up for In Depth Vid Review led by kiki_miserychic and tencel where we discussed the Agent Carter vid by sweetestdrain and hollywoodgrrl's Star Wars vid. I was happy to discuss both vids as I don't watch Agent Carter so the first vid was a little harder to understand and hollywoodgrrl's vid was so tightly packed with meaning that was fun to hear what people had to say about it. Next up was Challenge which I was excited to see with the Descent vid (although I was bummed I hadn't been able to finish a vid for it). There were some great vids in the show with my personal favorites being Highway to Hell by astolat, Going Down by kiki_miserychic and Good For You by trelkez. In between Challenge Review/reveals, I talked a little with bradcpu about the show and our guesses and then after the show, I talked a little more with ohvienna (who made alll the vids apparently), kiki_miserychic and hollywoodgrrl as well as a few others I'm forgetting. I went to get my VVC DVD where I ran into hederahelix and morgandawn and we had a good chat about Wyonna Earp and The Magicians.

Then I headed over to the con suite where I finally got to talk to iuliamentis a little and then had a good conversation with tencel about vids and lesbian movies among other things. Next I went up to my room and had an amazing conversation with klb about our lives and Vividcon and it was really great to connect with her on a deeper level. One of the best decisions I made this con was to try to have more one on one conversations with people and it really improved my con experience and made me feel closer to people there. Then I headed down to the con suite where a group was going to House O'Meat so while I already had eaten some Pad Thai leftovers, I decided to go with them and get a chance to talk more with people. While we waited for a table, I talked a little with jarrow, sweetestdrain, joyo and elipie and then waited some more in the lobby with shati, bironic and jetpack_monkey where we had a good conversation about future vids and Festivids.

I was really happy to have a chance to talk more with lola as we were seated next to each other at dinner and we had a lot of fun talking about acafandom stuff, vid/vidshow ideas and various other things. It was also fun to talk more with thirdblindmouse, jackiekjono and others at the table and to have the fun of seeing where group fannish conversation takes us. I think I headed back to my room briefly and then went to hang out with bradcpu, milly, kiki_miserychic, elipie, hollywoodgrrl and ohvienna where we talked about our con experiences, favorite vids, fandom loves (and hates lol), hung out with the baby and just had fun talking. We stayed up late again (even hollywoodgrrl and ohvienna who were dying lol) and then I went to get some sleep which although I woke up early again, at least I was able to enjoy some free hotel breakfast. I ate with milly, wickedwords and jackiekjono and we talked a little about stuff but we were definitely all feeling kind of tired and sad that it was Monday and everything was ending.

I went upstairs to finish packing and then came back downstairs to wait in the lobby and say goodbye to everyone. I talked a little with serrico and tencel and got to talk a little with revolutionaryjo and lunate8 before they left although it was especially sad to say goodbye to bessyboo after the awesome week we spent together in Minneapolis. Next I hung out a little with absolutedestiny, joyo, fan_eunice, chipunk71 and a few others before they left for breakfast and then I went to my room to bring my stuff back down and then hung out in the lobby to say goodbye to people as they left. I know at some point I talked some more with ohvienna and hollywoodgrrl and got to talk a little more with killabeez and wickedwords before they left. At some point, I helped renenet pack up the con suite stuff back into the car along with elipie, heresluck, cherry, grammarwoman and couple others. I was able to say goodbye to bradcpu and milly before they left and then got to talk to ohvienna a little about Outlander S1 before she and hollywoodgrrl left. It was also nice to get to say goodbye to heresluck with a Hamilton reference ;)

I mostly hung out elipie, jarrow, cherry and jetpack_monkey in the lobby while we waited for our later flights. It was fun to talk a little more about TGIF/F and Faberrycon with jarrow and talk a little more about the con and fandom before we left. Finally it was time for me to go and I got hugs from everyone before I left which is always kind of sad even if I still had fannish hangouts to look forward to. At the airport, I had fun listening to vidsongs and got super excited about making allll of them as well as watched some of the Club Vivid vids I hadn't seen all of. I took a flight back to NYC where I mostly slept and watched some vids. Then I went to stay with klb where we had another great conversation about Vividcon, our lives and fannish projects. I woke up early once again but at least got to see klb's super cute baby and talked briefly with her before heading out to the gym at Chelsea Piers where I got to talk a little with counteragent before going to a fun trampoline/fitness class. Then we ate brunch together where we had fun talking about Vividcon, vids, various fandoms (including Hamilton) and our lives in general. There was a super cool long monkey bars (for adults!) that I had fun playing on, ninja warrior style and the whole gym was gorgeous with a great view.

Finally she had to get some work done so I said goodbye and headed back to hang out more with klb where we watched the Keys to the Kingdom vidshow and talked some about the vids. After that we talked a little more about our lives until it was time for me to leave to catch my bus back to my Dad's place. I mostly slept on the bus as well as watching the whole Premieres show again which was super helpful to watch with headphones and alone so I could fully concentrate on the vids and I picked up a lot more on that run through. Once I got home, my Vividcon was over and it was sad but at least I finally got to sleep as long as I wanted.

Thank you again to all the amazing people that made my Vividcon so wonderful and amazing and for all the people who helped put the con together, worked on programming and submitted vids. It was funny that there was a panel at the con about letting go because it felt like a lot of the con was an exercise in letting go for me: letting go of my expectations, my nerves, FOMO, my hopes that everything would go perfectly and instead just savoring all the good moments, allowing myself to be vulnerable and making deeper connections from it, doing the best I could even when things were hard, loving the vids and community all around me. In the end, life is too fucking short to focus on the bad stuff so I tried my best to be happy at all the good things this con gave me this year and all the ways it has enhanced my life. I love Vividcon so much and I'm so glad I've gotten to enjoy it with so many different beautiful, amazing people and that is so incredibly meaningful.

Vividcon 2016 Con Report (Part 1)

So I'm back from Vividcon 2016 and as always, I had an amazing time. It was probably the weirdest Vividcon I've ever been to (personally) and an emotional roller coaster throughout but I had a lot of fun and it was wonderful to see so many friends again (even though I missed others who weren't there). There were so many incredible vids this year and I am constantly amazed by the creativity, brilliance and talent of the vidding community and so happy to be a part of it.

I tried remembering everything as best I can but if I made any mistakes, feel free to correct me! This goes for anything as I'd always like to improve :)

So I drove in with one of the Minneapolis cars on Thursday since I had been staying with bessyboo the week before Vividcon and we left at 4:30am to make sure we got in for Bessy's appointment. I slept most of the trip in the car with bessyboo, platinumvampyr and war_kitten and got about 5-6 hours of sleep which was the average most nights at Vividcon. When we pulled up to the hotel around 12:30pm, I saw bradcpu, elipie, milly, jetpack_monkey and possibly others and I hugged them all in the lobby and then we sat down and chatted a little. I remember greeting par_avion, bironic, killabeez, morgandawn, kerithwyn and others I'm forgetting. I remember talking a little with absolutedestiny about my CVV vid and I was happy to hear he liked it :) It was great to see lola again after we had a fun Escapade together and we went up to check into our rooms...only I entered my room to find someone already there apparently due to some hotel tech issues so Lola was kind enough to let me put my stuff in her room. Later when retrieving my things, I was able to say hi to cathexys via Skype who said some nice things about my vids :)

Next I went to lunch at House O' Meat with kiki_miserychic, elipie, ohvienna and hollywoodgrrl and we had fun talking about vids, fandom and various things. Then I talked in the lobby a little with bironic and par_avion and then left to go watch some of the women's individual all around gymnastics livestream with vonniek. We had to wait a little while until we could get the stream working but it was fun to talk with Vonnie while we waited about fandom and gymnastics and other things. Then I went down to registration around 7 where I hung out with a lot of different people. In particular, I had good conversations with bradcpu, alibisandwine, thisiskis, ghost_lingering, bironic, isweedan, fan_eunice and jarrow (who I was happy to hear was looking forward to my CVV vid) while enjoying the pizza party which seemed to work pretty well. At one point I talked to deejay and she gave me an awesome "Rise Up" Hamilton button that made me happy. Then I headed over to the Mystery Vid Party in revolutionaryjo's room and got to say hi to her, lunate8, butterfly and others. It was fun for a little while but then I was feeling a little sad due to some personal stuff and left to take a walk and talk to a friend of mine about things who helped cheer me up.

After I went up to hang out with bradcpu, elipie, hollywoodgrrl, kiki_miserychic, milly (and baby) and ohvienna. We had fun talking and laughing about stuff but somehow got a noise complaint (?!!!) which kiki_miserychic handled beautifully lol cause it was BS. At some point, we all went to bed and once again, I woke up too early so I used the time to work a little more on my panel (more on that later). After I went down to breakfast and I don't remember exactly who I talked with but I think jmtorres, cherry and a couple others. I went up to the registration table at 9 and got to greet sdwolfpup with "Pardon me, are you Aaron Burr, Sir?" which was fun and she was wearing the perfect Burr shirt for it. I talked to a few other people and then it was time for moderator training which was pretty simple. After that, I headed over to the Welcome to Vividcon/Auction Vividcon and before it began was happy to get to talk to khaleesian who I had seen before at Escapade/NYC hangouts but it was good to see her at her first VVC.

I can't remember exactly who I was sitting next to and talking to (sorry!) but I LOVED getting a chance to watch New Frontier on the big screen and it was just as amazing as I remembered. I really loved the change to put the Auction vids first as it was a good way to get excited about new vids to see them first when everyone was there and excited. It was a fun show full of great vids and then after that I went to One Hour Vid which I was really excited about as I've wanted to see a panel similiar to that for awhile. astolat had loaded up her computer and hard drive with sources and brought along the song, "Telephone" by Lady Gaga while killabeez took suggestions from the audience on possible clips to put on different lyrics. It was really fun to be in the room (where it happened!) full of fans having fun brainstorming multifandom ideas and astolat was able to lay down about 6 clips or so and it was really cool to watch them with everyone as our ideas came to life. I know at one point we talked about time remapping in a way I hadn't done it before and that was really cool (I really need to upgrade my Premiere version). After the panel, I talked a little with astolat on the way back to our rooms about doing an Iron Chef Vividcon panel thing as I was happy to hear she was interested in doing that as well.

Next I went downstairs to have lunch with winterevanesce and while I was waiting, I was able to give heresluck a hug and thank her for my amazing Jefferson Funk vid that she made for me and talk a little about that and New Frontier. Then Kitty and I walked over to my favorite Thai restaurant where we had an awesome time talking about vids, video editing as a career, Festivids and our fandoms which was a lot of fun and it was great to get to know her better. I went back to the Merlin panel and beforehand got to talk to butterfly a little more where we talked a little about Person of Interest, femslash and our fandoms. In the Merlin panel, we watched a vidshow of Merlin vids and then talked about what ways fans transform the Merlin canon and why it's spawned so many vids which was interesting to hear about. I know at some point on this day, I talked with destina a little about House of Cards and wished I had a little more time to talk with her later in the con. Next up I went to The Writing on the Wall panel where we talked about different ways to use text in vids while watching a selection of vids that used text and discussed them.

I left the panel with lola and we went up to have dinner (sushi and leftover pad thai) in her room. It was really great to have a long conversation with her (and sometimes her roommate isweedan who was watching some Olympics) about Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, vids and vidding fandom, my panel and feeling nervous about it, books and our vidding plans for the future. Then we went down to the Premieres line where I talked briefly with nestra trying to get her some Hamilton stuff and pipsqueaky. For Premieres, I was sitting next to winterevanesce which was perfect because I was really excited to see both of her vids which were great and gave me allll the feels and I could squee at her a little in between vids. I thought Premieres this year was really strong technically and all the vids were great but I have to admit that this was one of the years where I had a tough time finding vids that I strongly emotionally connected to (a combination of music, fandom and style) and as a emotions based vidder/vidwatcher (INFP here), it was more difficult to watch because of that. I particularly appreciated barkley's Football vid for making me cry with the live chorus of voices reminding me of my sports feels, elipie for making a hilarious Sims vid that was the best Premieres con vid experience as we were all crying with laughter, winterevanesce's Never Wake Me Up vid for reminding me of all my childhood fantasy and wonder feels and killabeez for joining me in bringing the femslash with her adorable Jessica/Trish vid.

It's always fun getting a chance to talk to the vidders about their vids after they show and in particular I remember talking with barkley, hollywoodgrrl, lola, heresluck, sisabet and ohvienna who gutpunched me with her amazing Leia vid. I headed to Vividcon Trivia where I was put in a group with cherry, moonling, renenet and taraljc where it was fun to combine our knowledge to successfully answer most of the questions with a special shoutout to taraljc who helped out a lot with the superhero questions. We did in fact win and then after talking to some people I'm forgetting, I headed over to deejay's Hamilton party where I grabbed some snacks and had a lot of fun talking to the people there while watching Hamilton. It was particularly great to enjoy the show with sdwolfpup since she's been such a huge Hamilton fan on Twitter and we got to watch/sing Wait for It as well as all the other songs. I was impressed we managed to make it through the entire thing and also had fun talking with alibisandwine, thisiskis and isweedan. There wasn't enough Hamilton references all weekend so I was super thankful to deejay for hosting the party that gave me lots of feels.

I went to sleep late but yet once again woke up early because my brain decided this VVC that 7:30am was a good time to be up. At least in this case, it was fine because I needed to work on my panel and rewatch a couple Premieres vids again anyways. This year was the first year I had ever done a panel before (I did In Depth Vid Review with laurashapiro a couple years ago but that was more of a group thing) but at TGIF/F (multi-fandom femslash con), I had the idea to do a ship vids panel since I love ship vids and have made a lot of them and I like to try to push myself to do new things at Vividcon. My panel was at 4pm which I was thankful for since it was pretty late so I had more time to prepare but also led to me being pretty nervous about it throughout the weekend as public speaking terrifies me (I am getting nervous/shaky just writing about this). I had worked on some notes for the panel before the con but some stuff came up and I wasn't as prepared as I hoped which made me more nervous. That being said, there was basically no way for me to be as prepared as I wanted to be because I'm really insecure about sharing my vid thoughts in a group setting especially in a setting like Vividcon where I greatly admire all the super smart people around and it's terrifying to talk about vids not knowing if I'm saying anything remotely interesting or helpful. Basically, the panel activated all my bad perfectionist impulses and since I couldn't figure out how to make the perfect panel in thoughts, organization or process, it was making me super nervous and emotionally freaked out and I just wanted to run away and not have to go through it.

Anyways, that was some background that hopefully will help explain some of the later events of the day. I went downstairs and took a walk/musical introversion session before breakfast and then ate Leslie Knope approved waffles with fan_eunice, sisabet and someone else I'm forgetting but it was nice to talk a little with them. Then I went up to Vid Review where I took notes on a really great Vid Review that had some really interesting interpretations and was led by the hilarious duo of jarrow and sisabet. I was bummed to miss the Vividcon Classic LKBV show as that is one of my top vidshows ever when I saw it at my first Vividcon but it's always worth it to go to Vid Review and get some of the vidding talk I'm always desperate to hear. After that, it was time for lunch when I had to do some more prep for my panel and when it finally hit me that the panel was actually happening which led to a really bad emotional freakout. The panel nerves combined with some personal stuff just led to a really toxic combination in my brain and IDK if I've ever felt so shitty at Vividcon, like I was having a breakdown, which was tough because it's my happy place (my safe place if you will ;)).

Thankfully, I was able to talk to bessyboo in her room who was able to comfort me and talk me off the edge which really helped, she is an awesome friend <3. I was too nervous to eat so I went up to my room and listened to some music, meditated and texted a friend and that helped enough to get me to focus on preparing for the panel. I did go down to the Star Trek panel where I talked a little more with butterfly but tried to get a little panel prep stuff done when vids weren't playing. I did go to the vidshow room to see my premiering vid, Suffer play and it was super fun to see it on the big screen as well as to see a few other kink vids before it. I was going to stay during the panel but then decided to go back to my room so I could focus more on working on my panel and dealing with my nerves which were still freaking me out. I was bummed to miss the rest of the Star Trek panel and What's That Noise?! panels but I could barely focus on them anyways and sometimes you have to miss programming at VVC that you wish you could attend. I was able to get enough done that I didn't feel completely fucked up over it and I had enough notes that I thought there'd be enough to talk about it. Thanks to talitha78, klb, others at Vividcon and everyone on Twitter who helped encourage me, it was very much appreciated.

Finally it was Time and I walked to my doom (I kid, I kid but...not). bessyboo helped me set up the computer tech just in case there was time to watch some ship vids and I tried to prepare myself as best as I could. I had a little intro prepared with a Hamilton quote (of course) and then went through various topics relating to ship vids. Thank you again to everyone who came and to everyone who spoke as well, I really really appreciated it and thank you to lola for helping out with writing. I can't really say how it went, it wasn't a total disaster at least and I got through it and I hope there was some stuff that was interesting to people. It's just tough because I generally feel like I can tell how good or bad a vid of mine is on some level but I just had no real idea with the panel and it made me feel super uncomfortable. I doubt I'll do another panel again, at least in that format (maybe I could do prep for someone behind the scenes or something someday) but at least I learned what my VVC limits are and can now say I did it. Anyways, I was glad when it was over and that people came over and said nice things to me about it and I could finally relax and not worry about it anymore. It was good to talk a little with rhea314 and revolutionaryjo about The Raven Cycle after the panel as well.

So I originally had been planning a different vid for Club Vivid but I wasn't feeling motivated to make it so I looked around for another vid I could make for Club Vivid. I had heard this on absolutedestiny's amazing pre-approved Club Vivid playlist and thought it'd make a great multi-fandom canon lesbians vid with femslash action actually happening for REAL but didn't think I could make it in time. But since it was the only idea I was excited about and with the #lgbtfansdeservebetter campaign going on, I was feeling particularly inspired to make something happy instead of sad and/or angry to support it. I have never actually made a multi-fandom vid before but I've wanted to for awhile and at least I was familiar with a lot of current canon femslash sources. I decided to limit it to TV shows that had been running in the last 2 years (they could have started well before that) as I wanted to highlight the good things we do have on TV right now or recently in the past and I also wanted to showcase the shows we build connections with and develop fandoms in and care so much about them getting together for real (one of the reasons I didn't include movies besides a huge tentpole one like Carol).

I started out clipping all the shows I was aware of with canon femslash scenes and then put down all the clips that fit the lyrical sections as I didn't want to use those clips later if they were needed specifically (the double entendre sections were the most fun heh). I decided to organize it from the initial first kissing sections to clothed sexytimes to naked sexytimes and had particular fun vidding the angry femslash to kissing femslash section as it validates the non-canon enemy femslash (like Swan Queen). Once I had a rough outline, I started looking for more sources by looking for articles on popular canon femslash pairings, going through many, many Autostraddle articles (and random google articles), looking for clips and multi-fandom femslash vids on Youtube. I found a good variety of footage but definitely wished for more sexy scenes other than kissing (we need SO much more dancing scenes in particular as well as three women threesomes). Also I was disappointed to find very limited amount of poc/poc couples even on shows like Orange is the New Black (I added S4 footage to the online version of this vid) but I'm hoping that will change in the future. It was kind of fun to start plugging in the holes of the vid like a puzzle but it did take forever to find everything.

I loved the cool sounds in the choruses and I wanted to do something special to honor that visually so I tried adding some zooms on the clips and that looked cool so I tried to add those throughout the choruses which was pretty fun. I also tried to keep the flow of the choruses so that the transitions between clips seemed more seamless together. I didn't have much time at the end but I also wanted to make sure to include a couple of happy endings at the end to emphasize that happy endings could happen for real too. It was super fun to dance to this at Club Vivid and I was so happy that people seemed to enjoyed it.

I hadn't been planning on making this vid but I couldn't find any Root/Shaw vids that focused purely on the kinky aspect of Root and Shaw's relationship while looking for Root/Shaw vids for the kink vidshow. And so if you can't find the vid you need, sometimes you have to make it yourself so that's what I decided to do. Thankfully I had already heard this song before and was able to find it quickly as I didn't have a lot of time to make this vid. I was super happy to have some actual sex scenes to use as well as trying to visually display all the kinky aspects of Root and Shaw's relationship. Also I wanted to make sure to include some of the best dialogue in the beginning since that's been an important part of their relationship from the very first scene. I was really happy to have the perfect last clip for the vid and ended up happy with how it turned out as it is a lot of fun to watch a lot (I have ALL the feels for them!).

I originally was making this vid for Challenge as I loved the theme and thought this episode would make a great vid to show Shaw's psychological torture as she struggled to hold onto Root to keep her safe. I had the hardest time finding a song and then when I was about to give up, I heard this song. It was perfect for what I wanted to do, at least after I was able to cut the song down to work with my idea which took longer than I hoped for. I started with the beginning and ending sections first since I knew what I wanted to do with them and then worked backwards since there were certain sections I had to include and I wasn't sure how much time I had. I had fun cutting fast and using dynamically beautiful visuals although it was a bit tricky making sure it could be understood visually. I didn't want to show Shaw being killed because of the whole bury your gays trope being way too prevalent this year (don't get me started) so I just implied it and hoped it'd come through. Once I finished the vid, I realized I was vidded out and too busy with RL stuff to make a Premieres vid so I decided to send this to Premieres instead.

Vividcon 2015 Con Report (Part 2)

Here is my long delayed con report (part 2) from last year's Vividcon. I wrote it down the week after Vividcon but needed to make some edits and forgot to post it. I didn't remember everything so apologies if I missed writing anything down.

Next up was Vividcon trivia where I joined a team with elipie, bradcpu, milly, kiki_miserychic, jarrow and eventually renenet (we were called Poop Emoji because of kiki_miserychic lol). We did not do well for the past questions about older fandom history but managed to do very well during the present and mix n'match rounds with the combined team effort of everyone. At the end we were able to do well enough matching cons with dates when they started to win :) There were also two amazing premiering vids with trelkez's Kingsman vid and then violace's Fury Road vid, both of which I loved. I talked a bit afterwards with bessyboo, laura47, cherryice and a few others (killabeez was one of them who said nice things about my vid :) and we talked briefly about The Good Wife) and was going to go to the usual Club Vivid rewatch in bradcpu and milly's room but they were tired so I went up to hang with franzeska, geekturnedvamp, hedrahelix and thirdblindmouse which was a lot of fun. I talked to thirdblindmouse about Root/Shaw and Smallville and she showed me some of her Martha vid which brought me back so many nostalgic feelings from back when I shipped Lionel/Martha. geekturnedvamp talked about some of her past escapades and we talked about fanfic and pro novels and various other things. It got late so eventually I went back to sleep where I got my usual 5.5 hours or so.

On Sunday I went down for waffle breakfast and talked with butterfly in line a bit and talked a little about her awesome Sense8 vid. I think I then had breakfast with frostfire17, iuliamentis and dsudis and then I had to go up to Vid Review to take notes and I was excited to hear cesperanza and sdwolfpup talk about the Premieres vids. There was some really interesting comments for the vids this year and I was really pleased with the reception of my own vid. I had a really great discussion after Vid Review with cesperanza, cathexys, lolachrome and a few others I'm forgetting about barkley's Can't Stop soccer vid as we discussed soccer and how different reactions are affected by your opinions on sports and the music involved. I also talked some more to cesperanza about hockey fandom and how my ship was recently destroyed and a little about vids in general. Next I watched the end of the vidshow showing vagabondage's vids and got to see her amazing Natural Born Killer's vid and hilarious Close to You vid.

After the end of the show, I went down to hang out with celli, bessyboo, war_kitten and a few other people and we talked a little about hockey and what people are going to do about fic. It was nice to get a chance to discuss it with other hockey fans although thankfully the happiness of Vividcon was taking away some of the pain. After that, I went back up to the consuite to get a quick snack before going to In Depth Vid Review led by killabeez and shrift. It was great to get a chance to talk about kiki_miserychic's awesome Cookie vid (COOKIE) and even more hilarious when they tried to switch the vid to cherryice's awesome Jupiter Ascending vid FOUR times and each time it played the Cookie vid because she didn't want to leave. After the panel, I talked a little more with killabeez and then hung out in the con suite a little where I talked to scribe and jarrow a little about The 100.

Next up was Challenge which was a great vid show and I was really impressed with how milly was able to place my vid. I knew watching vidshows at Vividcon tended to make me more emotional about my own vids but it was really intense watching my vid Afire Love with everyone and it broke me watching it so while I was pleased that I had been able to make many in the room cry, I was also crying as well. Afterwards I talked a little with elipie and milly and then talked a bit to lolachrome. milly led a great discussion of the vids and there were some good guesses of the vidders, including someone guessing mresundance for mine which was funny since I had watched his vid Shake It Out while working on mine. Then we watched the Auction vids and beforehand I was glad to have gotten a seat behind destina because I knew I was going to have a lot of feelings about obsessive24's House of Cards vid and it was SO epic to see this vid on the big screen with so many awe-inducing moments in the vid. After the show, I was finally able to talk House of Cards with destina and it was a lot of fun to talk about the show with someone else who also enjoys it.

We then left the room and I talked a bit with various people before going down to House O'Meat to have dinner with bradcpu, elipie, kiki_miserychic and milly. It was a lot of fun to talk about our favorite vids of the con and our experiences of the con as a whole which we eventually continued discussing back in bradcpu and milly's room along with talking about our lives and past Vividcons. At some point, trelkez came to join us for a little while and eventually we all went to check out jetpack_monkey's Fiasco game. After a little bit, I left to go to the Smallville room party but got briefly stopped going to my room where the Furious 7 movie was playing RIGHT before my favorite scene in the movie which is one of the most epic, beautiful, ridiculous scenes I've ever seen so I had to watch that of course. I then went to the Smallville Room Party where they were all showing everyone's first vids so I showed everyone my first Smallville vid I made when I was 15. I had fun seeing everyone's first vids and then because bessyboo, elipie, kiki_miserychic were all there, we put on Billy & Billie (stepcest show), the best episode, 104 which was a lot of fun to watch in a group (jetpack_monkey's reaction at the end was also hilarious).

We talked a little more and then most people left and the group of us that were left, bessyboo, laura47, war_kitten and geekturnedvamp (who had just come in) decided to play the Slash game which I had never played. Basically someone played a fictional or real character and then everyone else had to put someone down to be slashed (or more accurately, shipped) with them and the person who put down the card would pick the one they liked the most for whatever reason. There were some really great choices including either Aragorn or Green Arrow in a manpain contest for Dean Winchester, Starbuck vs Kalinda for Zoe Washbourne, my playing a Lady Macbeth for Hannibeth and someone wisely choosing Cersei Lannister for (my card) Michelle Obama. I still can't believe bessyboo didn't my choose my twins card I played for her...#brandfail. It was getting late by that point so I finally headed back to my room to get some sleep.

Monday I gave myself some much needed sleep and slept into 9:30 and then packed up my stuff to go downstairs. I said goodbye to the Minnesota people heading out including revolutionaryjo and bessyboo and talked with butterfly a little about Sense8 and various other things. Then bradcpu, elipie, kiki_miserychic and milly came down and I hung out with them for awhile as well as saying goodbye to grammarwoman, heresluck and trelkez. I ordered takeout of my favorite pad thai to eat with everyone and eventually had to say goodbye to bradcpu, milly, jarrow and absolutedestiny.

Eventually it was just par_avion, thirdblindmouse, franzeska and I left and we talked about how our planes kept being delayed as well as working on our various tasks, for me it was posting all my vids. I realized I had accidentally gotten rid of my latest Grey's Anatomy project file so I couldn't fix the credits so I just posted all of them the way they were. I learned my plane was cancelled and freaked out a little over that but I was able to get an early flight to NYC for the next day and change my bus home so it turned out alright. At one point I went outside to talk with my good friend from home and then after that I said goodbye to par_avion who was nice to leave leftover pizza for the rest of the night. It was sad once everyone had left but I finished up posting up my vids while watching vids in between and playing my vidsongs and getting excited about them. Finally around 3am I left to go to the airport and I was glad I went early as the security line was pretty long. Once I got through that, I took a quick 25 minute nap at my gate and then once I got on the plane, I was able to get around 2 hours of sleep.

Finally I made it to New York City and I took the bus and then train into Manhattan to visit brimtoast. We met up at a cafe near her apartment where we got to talk about Vividcon, vids, current fandoms, conventions and catch up on real life in general. Then I went up to her apartment and met her super cute son. We then watched a few vids in her room before she had to take care of things but it was super fun getting to catch up with her. Then I walked over to Panera Bread (cause I knew they'd have outlets and the internet), watched some vids and took a short nap because my lack of sleep finally caught up to me. Then I took the train up to hollywoodgrrl's and ohvienna's apartment where it was super nice to see them after I missed their them at Vividcon this year. I told them some of what happened at Vividcon, we ordered some food from the deli and then put on the Club Vivid playlist and watched most of those. We had planned on only watching some of the Premieres but ended up watching them all in a row to get the true Vividcon experience. We watched a few of the Challenge and Auction vids as well including obsessive24's AMAZING House of Cards vid which they also enjoyed and we talked a bit about that.

Finally it was time to sleep and I was able to get a gloriously straight through almost 8 hours of sleep. We talked a little about our fandoms in the morning and then hollywoodgrrl and I took the subway (ohvienna had to leave earlier) back downtown while talking about our current fandoms and festivids. After that I walked over to where my bus was meeting and I started typing up this con report. At this point I realized Vividcon was really over and began to get sad. But in between sleep and vidwatching on the bus back home, bessyboo sent me a vidsong for a vid I want to make and it made me super excited to start that when I got home. Overall I had an amazing Vividcon (as always!) and I was so happy to get a chance to catch up with so many people as well as deepen relationships with other people. And as usual, all the vids were incredible! This convention means so much to me and this being my tenth year, it made me feel particularly nostalgic for the past and grateful for all the wonderful people I've gotten the chance to know better and talk about fandom and vids with. I just really, really, really love Vividcon.

Yesterday I arrived in Minnesota to visit with bessyboo for the week before Vividcon and then will drive down to Vividcon 2016 next Thursday with other fans. I'm SO excited for Vividcon this year and I can't wait to see all the new vids and all my favorite people there. It's going to be amazing!

Vividcon 2015 Con Report (Part 1)

I arrived at the hotel around 11am and in the lobby saw par_avion and serrico. We talked a little as they prepared to make a Trader Joe's run as serrico had never been in a Trader Joe's and I proceeded to wax poetical about it. There was no one around once they had left so I decided it was a perfect time to get in a workout in the hotel gym. After that I met up with elipie, bradcpu and originally kiki_miserychic but then she left because she hates us (not really). I was starving so I ordered takeout of my favorite pad thai from the place down the street and had a great conversation with bradcpu walking there and back. Back at the lobby we were joined by settiai and we talked about the vids we had made for Vividcon and the vids we were excited about. bradcpu told me he made a House S5 vid for Premieres so I was super excited to hear about that and we talked about House and House/Wilson :)

bradcpu and elipie had to leave and then I talked a little more with settiai before heading up to my room to put my stuff away. There I talked a little with my roommate, par_avion before heading back downstairs. I met up with bradcpu (I remember we discussed American Ninja Warrior) and milly and walked over to Spuntino's where elipie, jetpack_monkey, cherryice and kiki_miserychic were having lunch and talked about the things we were excited about. After that we headed back to the hotel and I helped out a little with con setup before going downstairs and hanging out with arduinna, therienne, gwyneth and Mary. We talked a little about vidding and our current fandoms and then I went to help fan_eunice and vagabondage carry up their stuff to their rooms with kiki_miserychic and milly.

I went to the lobby where there a big group of people and got to say hello to everyone. I remember getting to meet neery and hear about her experiences as a first time German attendee, I talked with cherryice about her experiences getting to the airport and showed her my LA Zoo giraffe pictures (they weren't out when she went there). I was able to help organize a House O' Meat dinner and a group of 11 of us headed into the restaurant where they were nice enough to accommodate all of us at one big table. I was near neery, cherryice, bironic and tencel and we all shared some fun discussions. After that I went to registration where I got to hug bessyboo and enjoy checking out the con program to see all the different fandoms people had vidded. We eventually had a big Billy & Billie discussion ie squeefest with elipie and kiki_miserychic and had lots of fun talking about stepcest. I was surprised to see dualbunny at Vividcon as I had recently seen her posting her California pictures but was glad she was able to attend and got to talk to her, absolutedestiny and a couple other people. I also saw cathexys and were had a nice conversation and then I got to talk to futuransky about what she was up to. A little later astolat and cesperanza were there and I had fun talking to them.

Then I went to the Mystery Vid Party where we had fun watching vids off of revolutionaryjo's hard drive. I remember there was a fun multifandom dance vid to Shut Up and Dance and we were all like, it HAS to go in Club Vivid, we need to tell absolutedestiny for next year...and of course he already knew about it and put it in Club Vivid this year. We also watched this Mulan/Jon Snow vid which was funny and actually kind of worked. At some point, it got late and we left and I talked a bit to my roomies, par_avion and talitha78 before I went to go to sleep. At this point, I started getting sad and depressed about the Patrick Kane news and feeling the death of my ship was hitting me hard :( But I was able to fall asleep and actually get 8 hours of sleep which I wanted to get before I started getting less than six hours each night.

I went downstairs to get breakfast my usual five minutes before it closed (in my defense closing at 9am is pretty early. I had breakfast with cathexys, lolachrome and futuransky and I remember we had a conversation about growing up playing music in school. Then I went up to go to the Welcome and History of Escapade vidshow where it was nice to see some older vids I really loved like the Oz and "Us" vid for Highlighander. Next up was the Game Plan vidshow which I was really excited to see and I was the volunteer for the door to let people in. The vidshow was AMAZING (my fave of the con) and made me feel all kinds of sports feels from Smash having fun playing football, ice skating pairs in love, GERMAN FOOTBALL FEELS, Michael Jordan nostalgic competency porn (best sports player ever!!!), Chicago Cubs love (I don't even go here!) to cheerleading sparkle effects love. I talked a little to bradcpu, elipie and milly about the vidshow and then walked over to Spuntino's with grammarwoman, talitha78 and tencel to pickup lunch to take back to serrico's room. where had fun talking about fandom stuff.

Next up was the Survival of the Viddest panel where we talked about how to preserve vid files which I've been concerned about lately as I try to download vids and find some of them are gone. I was excited to hear that the AO3 vidding committee (looking for volunteers!) was working on starting a dark archive to keep vids from disappearing forever. After that was the BTVS: Nummy Treats panel which focused on the Nummy Treats mailing list back around 2002 and how sisabet and other Vividcon members got into vidding Buffy (mostly Spike) and they showed some classic vids and talked about the BandofBuggered forum and how it improved their vidding. I knew some of the information already but I loved the complete overview and getting to find more background about it (also Superstar is still AMAZING).

After that I went to the Make Mine Multi panel led by jetpack_monkey which was very relevant as I have a few multi vids I want to make in the near future and it provided a lot of good advice on how to tackle both big and small multi projects which helped excite me to want to make them. It was a two hour panel and after that was dinner where I went to the House O' Meat where I got to discuss all my German Football feels with barkley which was SO MUCH FUN! We talked about watching the World Cup last year, how she got into Borussia Dortmund, MARCO and the rest of these guys we can't help but love. After that I went back to my room to change into my outfit for Club Vivid. I went as Kimmy Schmidt from the Pilot and had her pink pants, yellow cardigan, purple backpack and sparkle shoes I had made myself. It seemed to go over well and there was some other amazing costumes from a group going as the Orphan Black clones, bironic as Bucky from Winter Soldier, bradcpu and milly dressed in Star Trek outfits, bessyboo's group going as My Little Pony ponies, deejay as Immortan Joe from Fury Road and many more.

I was determined to get more drunk than I had in previous years so I made sure to have a bunch of shots (with a touch of juice) throughout the night while drinking plenty of water. Club Vivid was as always AMAZING but feeling drunker definitely improved the experience. I don't remember a lot of specifics but it was SO much fun dancing with everyone. After Club Vivid, a bunch of us hung outside and I was able to introduce jarrow and scribe to each other since I knew they both loved women's soccer and it arose a super fun conversation about the US women winning the World Cup along with bessyboo who we were trying to get more into it. jarrow shared his roommate and his's superhero equivalents to the USWNT which was amazing and basically talked about how awesome all the players were, the (sometimes canon) ships and the NWSL. heresluck came over at one point and talked to jarrow and I about Friday Night Lights and I was super excited to hear about their vidding plans for the show.

At some point, I went to check out the party in geekturnedvamp's room where they were watching vids from the vidshows and I saw trelkez's great Merlin vid. A few people left because of tiredness and then I talked with geekturnedvamp a little about Meredith/Cristina from Grey's (they had watched my vid previously) and Alicia/Kalinda from The Good Wife which was a lot of fun. The last of us left, geekturnedvamp, tencel, someone else I forgot (sorry!) and I then watched the Hey Vid, Wanna Get High? vidshow and it was the perfect vidshow to watch at 2 am after drinking and dancing all night with all the pretty colors and beautiful editing and I saw a bunch of anime vids I really loved. We talked a bit more and then I headed back to my room around 3:30 am to get some much needed sleep. I woke up with only a small headache and a bit of quesiness which I considered a win and then went down to breakfast.

The first panel of the day was due South: 3 Fannish Waves which was led by scribe and sdwolfpup. They talked about three different time periods when Due South vids were made and the different genres vidders tackled and how it seemed many of the same kind of vids were made for each period with less differences than we expected. We watched some of my favorite Due South vids including Wonder of Birds, Goody Two Shoes, Istanbul (Not Constinople) and others which were fun to see all together. Then I stayed for the Life After Vidding panel where pipsqueaky and vagabondage talked about strategies for dealing with times when you're not vidding, from overcoming the vidding block to accepting that you need a break. It was an inspiring panel and I felt even more motivated to vid after it. Next I went to go get lunch at the Thai place forgetting that it's closed for lunch on Saturdays (every yea I forget!) but ran into jackiekjono on the way there and we went together to Spuntino's to have lunch together and were able to catch up talking about our fandoms, vidding and RL.

When I got back, I learned of the Vividcon Lock In where a few Vividcon members got locked into their hotel room but thankfully they were able to let them out around the time I got back from lunch. Next I went to the Stop, Collaborate & Listen vidding panel which was different than I expected with a little bit of discussion of positives and negatives of collaboration and then turned into an group exercise where vidders had sheets of paper describing the ways they could use help for their next vid (song choice, cheerleading, tech help, beta, etc) and others could have help sheets and volunteer to help. It was a bit tough for me at first because some of my projects are secret but it was really fun to walk around and talk with others about collaborating. Mostly it made me realize that I've been approaching vidding in too much of a solitary way and I need to make more of an effort to get more cheerleading and accountability in making the vids I want to make as in our community more than enough people are willing to help (I am definitely willing to do this in return as well!). I was super happy that jarrow and laurashapiro (who couldn't make it but helped with the idea) had done the panel and am already planning on attempting more collaborations in the future.

After that I went to the Vidding Doctor Who panel led by milly where she talked about some of the challenges of vidding Doctor Who and displayed vids that illustrated different ways of doing so even if not all of them were successful for people who didn't know Doctor Who. I did make a brief stop in Nearly New to see my Alicia/Kalinda vid as I was feeling super shippy for them and before I went in, had a nice chat with Allison about The Good Wife as I was excited to find another fan of the show. I had a LOT of feelings seeing my vid and then went back into the panel where I saw some great vids including Ghost by morgandawn and Blank Space by purple_fringe and such_heights. Next up was the Vidding as Media Literacy panel which had acafans paired with the vidders of the vids they showed in their classes and each one talked a bit about their experiences. It was interesting to discuss the way students saw vidding and vids as well as the questions about vidding canon and the vids included in that.

Finally I went to Wish You Were Here which played premieres by non-attending vidders as well as vids from supporting members and past members. It was a great show and I particularly enjoyed Uptown Funk by such_heights (there were happy tears!), The Girl You Like by dragonchic (amazing cutting!), All of Me by kuwdora (Fraser/RayK feels!), Crazy in Love by chaila (GONE GIRL FEEEELS!) and Never Look Away by fray_adjacent (Buffy!!). Then I went to have takeout dinner with cathexys, lolachrome and Allison where they showed me the women in coding vid from Wiscon and also saw the Amy Schumer video about women saying sorry all the time which is definitely something I need to work on. We also talked about academics, our fandoms and lolachrome talked to me about her book coming out. I know we talked about The Good Wife and Alicia/Kalinda since it's my current favorite ship and cathexys, Allison and I talked about UnReal which was a lot of fun.

We continued our discussion while waiting for Premieres to begin and I talked more about The Good Wife with lolachrome. Finally Premieres started and it was going great until there was tech trouble playing lolachrome's vid. I was trying to comfort her because I felt really bad and told her the story of how my very first vid that played at Vividcon (not a premiere thankfully) had tech trouble for 10 minutes and then we distracted ourselves by talking more about The Good Wife. Finally her vid successfully played...and then my vid in Premieres had tech trouble (after kiki_miserychic's AMAZING Cookie vid played). I couldn't stop laughing because it was the most beautiful, cosmic joke with us both right next to each other and after I had told my tech trouble story. But it was fine because immediately lolachrome distracted me by talking about Alicia/Kalinda and if there's anything I would love to do more than watch Premieres vids, it's talk about my favorite ship ;) Thankfully my vid's tech trouble was fixed quickly and then the rest of the first half vids played and they were awesome.

The Premieres vids of the second half were also amazing including the one-two punch of two of my favorite vids, astolat's Fast and the Furious vid and jarrow's The 100 vid which were just full of FEELS to watch for me. It was definitely a happier Premieres show...until we got to the one-two punch of SADNESS from bradcpu's wonderful House S5 vid that gave me House/Wilson feels while being super sad and then milly WRECKED me with her Hogwarts vid which made me nostalgic and miss the fandom while giving me a lot of Vividcon feels thinking of the hotel as Hogwarts and all the changes we've been through. I also LOVED barkley's soccer vid at the end which gave me happy sports feelings along with MARCO love. Afterwards I talked with some of the vidders who made vids who I enjoyed which is always fun.

I've fallen head over heels with Lin Manuel Miranda/Jonathan Groff since they love each other SO MUCH and are so cute on Twitter and in videos about it and basically ship themselves. So I knew for Escapade I wanted to make a RPS vid about their love for each other and since there's limited footage, I figured I'd have time to vid them in 3-7 days after Festivids. I already had the song since I loved this song for months and "hella obsessed with your face" always reminded me of how LMM looks at Groffsauce and I just had to audio edit a bit to get the right lyrics and length. It was a little complicated techically to make since I had to gather all the footage which was in all different sizes and qualities and then get it scaled down but I managed to figure that all out and also edit the song I had found that gave me happy LMM/Groffsauce feels. I was unsure of how to handle the smaller footage but then figured out to put the Hamilton background there which I liked how it connected their relationship to the larger musical. The structure was pretty simple with vidding to the lyrics although it was a little tricky trying to get some visual contrast as well as figuring out how to use the tweets and still images. Mostly I had a LOT of feels making this and even though it was a bit of a rush at the end, I'm still really glad I was able to make a little vid to condense all their cuteness together and give me a shipper high whenever I watch it.

So I wasn't planning to make this vid but then winterevanesce made me this AMAZING vid for Blue Neighbourhood that gave me all the feels and reignited my desire to vid these precious boys. Since she had vidded both the angst and cuteness so well, I figured I could still make a happy, romantic vid for them so I looked at the end of my new songs I like playlist on Spotify and almost immediately found the song I used for the vid. So it was basically fate ;) I initially was going to cut the song more but I really wanted that crescendo instrumental build so I figured I'd make it work with the clips I had. I knew I wanted to start the beginning with the young kids realizing they had feelings to make it clear it was a romance at each age and I figured out I wanted to build to the kiss in the first chorus and then the sex in the last section. One of the other reasons I wanted to make the vid is to give my proof and interpretation of why I think the music videos ended in a happy ending (it's ambiguous) or why it SHOULD so hopefully that comes through on some level. It was fun to vid Troye and Matthew who are just so freaking attractive as well as the cuteness of the boys and besides an audio issue at the very end, I had a fun and pain-free vidding process as it mostly all came together. And I am definitely in agreement with the people at Escapade who wanted the movie not a music video series because I really, really wish the source was longer and had the story (hint hint write fic!).

So I really wanted to make a Hamilton vid for Festivids but most of my vid ideas for the show required too much footage I didn't have as well as a lot of time that I didn't really have with all the other Festivids I wanted to make. So I thought it wouldn't happen this year until I found this song and I must have been in a Hamilton mood because only half the lyrics make sense for him and the other half are COMPLETELY wrong. But I kept getting attached to the idea and I figured if I had time, I could make a vid in the last couple days before the deadline by cutting the song down. I didn't really have time but I made enough to cut out all the lyrics that didn't fit Hamilton and just kept the last chrous and figured I'd just make a happy, Hamilton focused ensemble vid for the show. At one point, I thought about making the vid more meta about the show phenomen itself but when I tried to do that, I realized I didn't have enough time to tell both stories adequely so I just went with Hamilton the show.

It was a LOT of fun to vid this because I'm so obsessed with the musical and vidding allowed me to really see each little face movement and all the little details I miss on regular viewings. The lyric matchings were really fun although it became a bit tricky to have some more structure for when it was less obvious but I enjoyed comparing Jefferson & co to redcoats at the end fighting section as well as figuring out ways to introduce all the major players in Hamilton's life. One of my favorite clips is Hamilton's smile to Angelica because SO CUTE and I also loved putting in my little "follow" Hamilton/Washington moment. Ultimately I wanted to make it for sdwolfpup since she has been so awesome on Twitter with quoting Hamilton and being fun to talk to about Hamilton and Leslie. I wanted to make her a Burr vid actually but could never find a song that would work for such limited footage and I also figured someone else would do it. Anyways, the beginning turned out to be one of the trickiest parts but I was happy with the way the whole vid turned out in the end even if I'm not sure if it's a bit too fast. In any case, do not worry, this is DEFINITELY not the last Hamilton vid you'll see from you and I'm so excited to vid it when we have HQ footage of the whole musical to vid the longer vids in my head.

So I've wanted to make chaila a Festivid for 3 years and every year, her vid was next on the list and I didn't have the time to make it so this year I was determined to make her a vid. There is a sad lack of Gone Girl vids and last year at Escapade, I heard Blow and thought it'd make a fun Amy vid. Plus, almost all of the LA vidders have vidded Blow by Kesha (some version of it) at some point so I figured I might as well do it myself. I wanted to find a remix of the song so I could do some quick cutting and couldn't find anything that worked for it except this song which has already been used in one of my favorite Club Vivid vids but I decided to use it anyways. I tried to reread the book before I made the vid but got stuck in the Nick sections but finally figured out the book is a MILLION times better skipping Nick's sections and just reading the glorious Amy sections.

I got distracted by another festivid so I got started on this vid late but once I clipped it, I struggled a bit coming up with how I wanted to vid it. It helped me a LOT once I decided to cut out more of the song than I first imagined so that allowed me to just focus on the parts of the movie I wanted to vid: Amy being a mastermind and destroying Nick :D Some of the faster cutting sections were difficult and hollywoodgrrl helped with that as well as the slower section in the middle. I particularly loved the "throw some glitter" section as I knew what I wanted to do with that from the beginning of the vid. I still wish I had more time to work on the vid but I'm really glad I got to make an Amy vid and that a lot of it came out similar to my initial vision for the vid and what I wanted to show.

So when I fell in love with Troye Sivan, I started reading some articles about him and eventually came across one talking about other gay music artists and Olly from Years & Years came up. I started listening to Years & Years music and fell in love with the deep emotion of Olly's voice as well as the band's beautiful music videos. I was intrigued by the idea to make a music video of most of their music videos to try to combine them together to tell a coherent story which I hadn't really done before and looked for a song that reflected the emotion and the story I wanted to tell. I couldn't find anything good enough and finally decided to use the song, Shine since I loved it and they had made a bunch of music videos to the song so clearly one more wouldn't be an issue ;) I clipped all the music videos and organized the clips a bit but then got distracted by my assigment so I wasn't sure if I would finish this vid since I had another ambitious vid I was working on. When I decided I wouldn't have time to finish that one, I decided to try to make this vid especially since I really wanted to make a vid for winterevanescence.

I really loved the process of trying to create a story that didn't exist through vidding instead of fic and the structure was really fun to do. I started this at the end of December and the beginning came pretty easy as knew I wanted to show Olly becoming separate from his bandmates after being distracted and tempted by pretty colors and symbols that would become important to the band. I struggled with the later parts as I soon realized that I didn't have enough footage to cover the whole song and I had to figure out which parts I had the footage to keep and would work with the story of the beginning. I was able to figure it out and I liked the whole idea I had of creating Olly's evil twin that was trying to destroy him leading to the house coming apart as Olly tried to find his way back to the happiness of playing music with his bandmates at the end. There was another layer that I didn't know if anyone would get to the story where to me it was kind of a metaphor to when you get distracted by your negative thoughts (that *evil* part of yourself) or other things that take you away from happiness and you have to find your way back to the light. In any case, I also have fun playing with the colorful footage and vidding in a little bit more of a flow-y way and I was glad that I was able to make it.

So I heard the song "Headphones" and fell in love with it as for me it's a perfect representation of that mood that I relate to when I want to ignore the outside world and just focus on creating, usually vidding. It reminded me of Beca from Pitch Perfect as she's such a great representation of fan artists with her mashups and how she loves her headphones. I felt bad that I wouldn't get to make a treat for metatxt since she was my assignment so I decided to make her this treat while I was looking for a song for her assignment. I cut the song down because the concept was pretty small and I wanted to use only the best clips and thankfully it was easy and fun to vid. Most of it was done by the beginning of November which helped lesson some of my assignment stress. I wanted to keep Jesse, Chloe and the Bellas out of the vid as much as possible as Beca did connect with them (which I showed for the latter two in my ensemble vid) which limited my clip choices a bit but I made it work. Ultimately I was pleased I made this vid and that a bunch of people got that it was about vidding and fandom in general as that was a major reasons why I decided to make the vid.

So I was planning to make metatxt a Bechloe vid since I knew she LOVED them and so when I got assigned to her, I was super excited to get a chance to actually make it especially when I read her Dear Festividdder letter which was hilarious and inspiring. I also loved that I was making it for Festivids since I had used the Pitch Perfect finale song a few years ago to make my Parks vid and it felt very full circle to vid the actual movies. My first problem though was finding the right song and that turned out to be a little harder than I thought as it took me about two weeks. While I looked around for songs, I clipped the movie and once I finished, I already had the song for Headphones so I vidded that as I was waiting but I started to get nervous because I wanted to finish the vid by the end of the November (ha!). I was complaining about it to elipie and then I started just searching for titles that reminded me of the vibe I was looking for and "Alive" was one of them, I found this song and the rest was history. Except that I actually planned to cut the song after the second chorus because I didn't think I had enough Bechloe footage but later on when I tried it, it felt cut off and like the ending wasn't strong or conclusive enough and that it needed more.

Yeah, so that's when I decided I needed to add the rest of the song and make it more of an ensemble dance chorus so that was more clipping I had to do which made the vid take longer than I expected. I struggled a little bit with making the choruses be fun and dance-y in an interesting way as well as dealing with the heavy face shots of the Bechloe scenes but was able to find a way to make it work for me and I had a lot of fun vidding the quick editing sections before the choruses. Even though it was harder than I expected and took longer, it was really fun to rekindle my Bechloe love and gave me a lot of feels and I was glad it made metatxt happy in the end.

End of the Year Meme 2015

So before I go into the end of the year meme, I want to talk a little about the RL stuff that happened this year that led to some of my answers in this meme.

So I went back to college in the beginning of the year because I wanted to develop that intellectual foundation I've always wanted to have. It wasn't what I wanted though, I just loved the seminar where we got to read and talk about classic books and not everything else so now I plan to do that on my own. I'm glad I tried though as I needed to let that part of myself go and accept I'm not the intellectual thinker I wish I was. After I learned that, I had to figure out what comes next (you've been freed) and what career path I should follow. After looking into various paths, I settled on career counseling (specifically for programmers) and decided to move back with my dad while I worked on my skills. After a month or two, I struggled with learning the material and finally decided to take a step back and make sure this is the direction I wanted to go on. After a lot of soul searching, I decided I needed to be honest with myself and even though it was scary to pursue, finally go with my true passion, video editing.

Yep, I've decided to make vidding not just my hobby but do it professionally by editing online video. I'm not interested in film and TV editing (although if something came up that sounded good, I'd be up for it) as I prefer shorter video projects and am not as big of a film/TV fan as would probably be needed to do well. But I think I'm an artist at heart and of all the things to learn and read about, everything related to video editing has always attracted me. I didn't pursue it before for various reasons: feeling like it didn't provide enough of a social impact in terms of film/TV/commercials (my ultimate goal is to make world changing videos), sometimes it's difficult for me to work hard on video editing (I think this is more never learning hard work/grit habits throughout school) and my fear of not being able to make money in a less commercial career. Another issue is that video editing is a large part of my identity so it's scary to really commit myself to trying to do well and then what if I'm not good enough and don't make it? I think it's worth overcoming all those challenges though and I haven't found anything better that I enjoy and considering I've been in love with video editing since I was 15, I think it has staying power. I don't think it'll be easy and I definitely need to stop being so lazy and procrastinating but the choice to try feels really good, my intuition says it's the right thing to do.

I've also been scared that doing video editing professionally would take away the joy of doing it as a hobby and because vidding means SO MUCH to me, it's definitely a risk. But I think aligning my career with my favorite hobby that takes a lot of time and effort for me makes sense as a person with big ambitions. Even if it doesn't work out, at least I'll learn useful skills for vidding and I won't have any what if regrets because I've always wondered if this would work out (and it's good to try while I'm still young). The last couple months I've spent reading some material, practicing tutorials and getting in contact with a few people working in the industry which has been helpful. I definitely need to do more and I'm looking forward to going back to LA next month which I think will help a lot with motivation. It'll definitely make this year tricky in terms of money but I'm willing to work hard this year and as long as I'm making progress in getting a video editing job, I'll do what I have to do. Nope and yes. My resolution is to work on deliberate practice 5 days/week for video editing.

Yes, my cousin and other cousin's wife both gave birth to baby girls.

No although my dad's close friend died and that was sad.

Mexico! I saw Rosarito Beach and Tijuana and it was super cool although getting back into the USA was a nightmare.

A stable career direction with steady skill progression.

November 18, getting to see Hamilton live for the first time. That whole weekend was amazing in NYC!

Figuring out what I want to do with my life (bonus: seeing Hamilton).

Just money shit in general that I don't want to go into.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Not really except a few leg soreness weeks where I couldn't exercise and a cold or two.

HAMILTON TICKET!!! (this is gonna be a theme obviously) Also VVC expenses and family and friend vacations.

Lin Manuel Miranda for being the most amazing human that always makes me smile with his enthusiasm as well as creating my favorite musical that's my biggest current fandom. Also Supreme Court for legalizing gay marriage across the country!

Donald Trump and the Republicans continued mockery of the political process.

Rent, food, vacation money, college, fitness stuff.

What fandoms did you mean to get into but didn't in 2015? Why?

Deadwood (I got through mid-S1 and now forget most of it so haven't gone back), Penny Dreadful (not really my thing although I may try again another time), Manhattan (slow so far but I may try again).

Deadwood, Show Me a Hero, Hannibal (catch up), Louie (catchup), Black-ish, Playing House, Banana, Cucumber, The Returned, Lovely Little Losers, The Man in the High Castle, Mr. Robot.

What fandoms do you think you might let go of in 2016 unless things significantly improve?

Right now I'm iffy on some shows that are kind of boring me: Nashville, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Empire, maybe Supergirl.

What show impressed you most in 2015?

Not TV but Hamilton was the best thing I listened to and watched all year and in the top 3 in my entire life. SO BRILLIANT, amazing use of words, narrative, incredible characters to identify with, revolutionary idea, music that I listen to nonstop. UnREAL was incredible with its interesting critique of reality shows and the beautiful, complicated, interesting relationship (and character development) of the two female leads. In general I found some unique, intriguing, feelsy femslash in The Good Wife with Alicia/Kalinda and in Person of Interest with Root/Shaw that was amazing to experience. I loved the Parks and Mad Men series finales which went out on top and moved me to tears. Movie-wise, Inside Out blew me away and Carol was so beautiful and amazing it took my breath away.

What show impressed you least in 2015?

Really bummed The Mindy Project not only did an accidental pregnancy plot that made no sense (THEY'RE OBGYNS!!!) but then badly handled the baby plot, made me dislike Danny with SAHM bullshit and then added a sexist doctor and that finally forced me to abandon the show despite my hero worship for Mindy Kaling for almost 10 years. I may go back someday but I had to quit it for now. The Kevin episodes/half-episodes on The Leftovers were THE WORST and bring the show way down for me (why are you wasting Regina King and Carrie Coon???). Jessica Jones had potential but I'm still bitter what they did to Jeri and how they sacrificed character development for plot which was drawn out way too long.

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?

I'm curious about Westworld, American Gods, Emerald City, Billions, Angie Tribeca (written by Steve Carell and his wife starring Rashida Jones), The Catch (Shondaland), The Magicians. I will not catch up in time but I'm looking forward to later watching The X-Files revival once I do. Moviewise, looking forward to The Girl with All the Gifts, Ghostbusters, Moana (LMM) and Finding Dory.

I've been reading some of my favorite TV critics about TV shows and criticism and #PeakTV and all that but lately I've been pretty disappointed with TV. There's nothing that's really grabbing me and that's not just good (sometimes great) but truly Great like a Breaking Bad or similar. I miss great shows that have characters that I really connect with and I'm always frustrated with all the white guy centered shows out there. It's frustrating that there's so many TV shows and yet I have such a hard time finding ones I truly love. Imma keep trying though as a helpless TV fan but I hope next year will be better for TV. In any case, I've been trying to read more books to help fulfill the character connections I'm not getting as much on TV although I miss the visuals with books and fandoms are harder to come by.

My favourite video this year (of my own):
Dark Doo Wop because it came out closest to what I saw in my head and gives me a lot of happy OT3 feels.

My least favourite video this year:
I liked all my vids this year but probably Us Against the World because I still need to fix the choruses and am struggling with getting the source again to do it and it makes me sad it didn't come out like I wanted it to in my head.

Most successful video
Through the Deep, Dark Woods got the most love during Festivids and Dark Doo Wop did best at VVC. It also seemed that Afire Love was very successful at making people cry so I was proud of that :)

Video most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Happy with all my feedback but probably Don't Wanna Dance which I expected.

Most fun video:
Sugar was a lot of fun to make in terms of happy shippy feels and I think that comes through.

Video with single sexiest moment:
Dark Doo Wop with OT3 kissing and HTGAWM Annalise/Wes sexy moments.

Biggest vid fail:
Festivids deadline fail in terms of really struggling with them last minute so a few vids didn't come out like I hoped.

Hardest video to make:
Don't Wanna Dance in terms of clipping 10 seasons and Afire Love in terms of crying.

Most unintentionally telling video:
I don't know if this applies this year but a lot of the vids I made I cried making/watching this year, in part reminding me of my mom so that probably came through (All I Want, Grow Old With Me, Afire Love in particular).

For 2015:
I'm working on finishing some festivids including some tough ones as well as a few fun treats. I have one vid I've been dying to make for VVC for years and I'm determined to do it this year. I have a fun CVV vid in mind and a couple large projects I want to start working on. I want to continue working on cutting, visual techniques and learn more After Effects.

Dear Festividder

Dear Festividder,

Thank you so much for making me a vid! I am so excited to see what you come up with and I'm sure it'll be amazing. I love all kinds of music so follow your heart and what suits the vid for you. If you're looking for any guidelines, I tend to prefer indie pop, indie rock, hip hop, top 40, any kind of music that's emotional or that includes dynamic instrumentation. I love all kinds of vids, character studies, feels vids, shipper, meta, effects-y vids, fast or slow, dark, angsty or happy. I am less into vids with dialogue within the vid but if you have a great idea for it, go for it! Any rating or content is fine with me. I love Festivids so please enjoy yourself, I'm sure I'll love whatever you make!

American Ninja Warrior

I particularly love the women on this show so I'd love a vid that focuses on them. My favorites are Jessie Graff (Parker's stunt double on Leverage!) and Kacey Cantazaro but any or all of the women would be amazing to see a vid of. I also love Flip Rodriguez and Jesse La Flair so a vid about either of them would also be great. I think you could make an awesome vid of the narrative of the latest season (I love Issac!) or of the whole show in general so I'd love to see that as well. If you have a favorite contestant I haven't mentioned, go ahead and vid them as most of all I love the physical challenges on the show and the way the contestants overcome it leading to emotional moments. Outside footage is also encouraged if it helps your vid at all!

Billy & Billie

I would most love a Billy/Billie vid but a character vid of either of them would also be wonderful! My favorite episodes are 4 and 10 and I love the shared history aspect of their relationship. I'm less into their work lives (and work friends although I do love Billie & Drew) except for the Billy/Billie scenes that involve them. Feel free to make something happy and shippy or dark and angsty or both!

Blue Neighbourhood (SAFETY)

If you haven't seen this and have any interest in a three part music video narrative series about a childhood boyhood friendship turned gay romance with angst, you should watch them. I would particularly love a vid of Troye/Matthew (not sure of character's names so using the actors) that focuses and ends up on the happier side and focuses less on Matthew's dad than the actual video. However if you'd like to go dark or focus on either character, that's great too! It might also be nice to see a vid focusing on the young boys as I LOVE the puppy love between them and it was one of my favorite parts of the music video. Any use of the beautiful nature shots and imagery of the videos would be wonderful to see.

Halt and Catch Fire

I would absolutely LOVE a character vid of Cameron who is the cool genius programmer of my dreams. Anything focusing on her being awesome with computers and/or handling her emotions and dealing with other people would be amazing. I also love Donna especially her rise to do her own thing in S2 and would love a vid focusing on that. A Cameron/Donna vid (platonic or romantic) would also be incredible as it's my favorite relationship on the show. I have a serious thing for Lee Pace and love how he infuses Joe with charisma and captures his desire to make a visionary product while struggling with his own demons. I do enjoy the Joe/Cameron relationship as well (Cameron/Tom is cute too) but don't like Joe/Sara so less of that. I hate Gordon (he's the woooorst) and would prefer to only include him as much as necessary in an ensemble vid or vid focusing on one of the other characters. I would love to see an ensemble vid about the work involved to create the Giant in a S1 vid or the struggles of creating Mutiny in S2. I'm not a fan of Joe and Gordon's plot in S2 (except for the Mutiny stuff) so would prefer less focus on that. A vid celebrating computers and their possibilities would also be awesome!

Hamilton

WHERE DO I BEGIN? I have fallen head over heels with this musical so whatever you decide to vid for it, I'm sure I'll love it. I LOVE Hamilton so anything about his relentless drive and ambition to overcome obstacles and opposing views to leave his legacy would be incredible. I'd love character vids for Burr (WAIT FOR IT! feeels), Washington (HERE COMES THE GENERAL! honor feels), Angelica (so badass!), Laurens (idealist <3), Jefferson (so flawed but I can't help but love him and his intellect) and would also love to see a friendship vid for Hamilton, Laurens, Mulligan and Lafayette (+Burr?). I'm a big multishipper for this musical so you could make me super happy if you wanted to vid Hamilton/Laurens, Hamilton/Washington, Hamilton/Angelica, Hamilton/Burr, Hamilton/Lafayette, Washington/Lafayette (it's a thing, look it up!), Hamilton/Jefferson(/Madison), Hamilton/Laurens/Eliza, Hamilton/Angelica/Eliza, Hamilton/Laurens/Lafayette, Hamilton/Washington/Lafayette and if you're into the RPF side, Lin Manuel-Miranda/Jonathan Groff (LMM with anyone in the cast is amazing!). I'd love an ensemble vid focusing on the REVOLUTION (I've already cried twice reading the book about the liberty, equality, etc ideals the nation was founded on) or on the politics of starting the country. I'm less into Hamilton/Eliza (except in a poly context, see above) and would less prefer a vid about Phillip and SADNESS but if you really want to make me cry, go ahead :) Feel free to use external source, historical quotes/references/documents, cast footage or anything else you might need to make a vid for this source. Oh and I'm open to using any kind of music including the Hamilton cast recording, hip hop, any other musical or anything else you might want to use, don't limit yourself :)

UnREAL

First of all, I am a HUGE Rachel/Quinn shipper so if you want to vid them (romantic or platonic), you'll make me super happy. I love everything about their relationship from the mentor/mentee aspect, the fucked up toxic aspect, the fun happy aspect and the mother-daughter aspect. That being said, I'm a huge fan of both Rachel and Quinn as characters and a character vid exploring their issues would be incredible. Another of my favorite characters is Jay and characters that I don't like are Chet and Jeremy. I think you could make a super interesting vid about Everlasting and the fakeness of reality shows and how the producers negatively impacted the contestants lives in the name of good TV. Any kind of ensemble vid would be great!

The Wire

I love the show completely but if you're looking for what I'd particularly love vids for, here are some suggestions: Randy, Stringer/Avon, Stringer/McNulty, Kima, Wallace, McNulty, Prez (particularly S4), McNulty/Kima (platonic), Snoop, Dukie, Michael, Omar/Brandon, Carter&Randy or Lester. I'd also love to see vids focused on Baltimore as a city (I LOVE cities) and I would die for a vid that's very meta about the show itself. This fandom needs ALL the vids so please, I'll take anything.

Here are my notes for Vid Review, In Depth Vid Review and Challenge Review for Vividcon 2015. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but these are not perfect transcriptions. Vid Review
Mod: cesperanza and sdwolfpup

Right Round
-i love this vid, i had a really good engagement of this vid on a bunch of different levels, i was personally moved by it, i felt like it was saying what goes around comes around and we're spinning round and round to this source, if it had spiderman it would have been that much better, it had a very hip cover, the song choice asked me to compare between old superhero films and new superhero film, i want to see next year the next version of this vid, we need a different conversation to do it
-the song choice for me told me you might have thought this stuff was old and fuddy duddly made me feel the old clips were fresh
-i love superhero and comics, ive seen zero of source material, i engaged so well with this vid, it conveyed to me the narrative well, look at these shiny heroes yay, it worked well for me without contextual context
-his love for it was very strong, its not my cap but its cap, you can see batman and robin, you dont usually see robin
-i love this, one thing that strikes me is how shiny it is, i havent seen but my experience with using older footage is theres not usually shiny, the amount of action footage that was teased out was very impressed for me, if its actually there you dont have to tell us about it

Perfect Day
-I love this vid, the constant use of the smiling made the frowns stand out, what happened to her that made her stand out, i love the sense of overriding optimism, bullying through life, understood things were bad but it made me happy
- i was less the audience, after a minute it become annoying, im a new yorker, i got annoyed, like a tourist, i got unnerved, shes not quite there, i was moving down the subway too much, i couldnt tell if i was supposed to be...
-i havent seen the show, it was great for the first minute, then now what, the opening credits for sitcom, the right song and the right stuff, thats all i need to know
-ive only seen the first episode, what i really liked is shes been in this underground bunker, this captured shes really stuck at the age that she was, shes just being really joyful about it in a little kid way, it really worked for me, somethings wrong and shes going to power through
-i remain worried about her, ready for psychotic break, i live in the therapy capital of the world

The Sound of Settling
-I got the basic story, boy meets girl, loses girl, then gets girl, i felt like the vid required a lot of context, i struggled to connect without that context
-hard sell for me, interesting about settling, i thought it was house of settling, settling for i didnt know it was house, i hate to think it was settling for cute girl, wondering if you know
-very familiar with this show, the answer i thought was rom the main character is atypical whose supposed to be after a certain kind of job, its about him not settling for those things, the people around him struggling to understand him
-that youre going to be yourself and not settle for others expectations
-the character does settle for a long time before he finds himself, for 3/4 he settles for being a nobody and doing what hes supposed to do

Karate
-i hope its in club vivid next year
-i really enjoyed this vid, i havent seen source, i love when the music kicked in, it engages you right away, theres wonderful pov shift where bad guy gets pushed over the edge, i wish there was more time for lobby character, i wish there was more time upfront
-witty use of movement, i drive, the trains moving in both directions, witty uses of motion, it was genuinely witty vid i enjoyed watching
-one or two shots where everything was in the same frame, it gave it a music video feel, it increased the musicality, pretty colors

Drawn to the Blood
-i liked this vid, i like a more painterly aesthetic in vids, you can see vids in a distressly kind of way, i think its interesting when people do that stress, it reminded me of later spiritualist stuff, considering its the kind of show about supernatural you dont get the eerie in that way, i appreciate the vid reaches toward that sense of the angel, i enjoyed seeing spn connected to that aesthetic, that to me it was interesting in the way castiel had that laboratory which it seemed in connection to source
-i liked scratchy but the red overlays didn't work for me, i liked the scene where he gets white, that was extremely impactful for me, use of white was excellent
-what worked for me was painter effect, it was clipped over and over again, wearing thing and breaking, i really did enjoy it
-as a vcr vidder you felt that more keenly than some
-i had the opposite feeling about the use of effects, the grainy film effect doesnt say to me spooky, partly because we've seen the beginning over and over, why is someone watching old film with castiel, i couldnt lose that thought, then with the end you get the scratchy film again
-one thing that struck me with this vid, i kept getting distracted by the poor audio quality, it was distracting me from the visual elements, dont know if it was a choice to go with the scratchy film effect, that kept distracting me from a lot of the visual parts of the vid, it kept throwing me out, i didnt know the song at all
-i thought the concept of effects were fine, the effects themselves were giving me a scratched film from photoshop file, something about them didnt change enough, i got an overly technical side distracting me from sides
-its a risk, youre brain goes how did you do that, risk for maker audience, i really like the mood and tone, made me wish i knew more about what was going on, i look forward to knowing more about that
-it felt different than other vids, i dont feel like i see a lot of that in other vids
-i really like this vid, i really like the music, the effects felt uncanny and unnatural, locked in a loop like you cant lose, it makes me want to see the source but ive played the game, it was really beautiful
-true blood credits are doing something similar, godly, supernatural goes toward true blood

Dark Doo Wop
-love this vid, i love the use of hands and the way it connected everyone to talk, sensuality
-i thought it was masterclass of pacing and of sexiness, this is how you cut one sex scene, i thought it was masterclass of sexy editing
-it unrolled this one moment and it reminded me of the show i was watching but ill return to watching it a different way
-im familiar, i knew what was coming, the tension that builds up was really good
-im familiar, the building up, it made me see a storyline that i didnt realize was in there, oh its a love story the whole time, the power dynamic, it was cool for me to see
-i didnt know source, i was impressed with song choice, i needed coaching, what am i supposed to think about, both the lyrics and the sound of the music, the pacing had to work against the song, youre going out of sync, this is no longer working, the melody line and whats going on underneath, a+ song choice would watch again
-as someone else who hasnt seen the show, the subway hit primed me for how the vid was moving, it was driving and it was a force, sometimes it worked again in the 1st source, when you have to slow down for the curves and stoplights, how it moved together was encapsulated by that early
-song choice, miraculous that song can be sexy and cynical, world is going to burn, nightmare that could have been invented for this show
-i only know basis of show, manipulated to top, trying to figure out whether hes trying to manipulate the way into the source, whether theres love happening, i also like the song choice is supposed to be doo wop, lighthearted american thing, it turned dark
-the female character was not a tool, shes an active part of whats going on and i liked that

The Loyal
-i have a theory, it asked us to reference another vid, interesting, what are relationships between two vids, its a sirius black vid, i could be wrong, in which he is the godfather thats going to take the child and put the child to save the world, theres a bridge section, serious grounding to marauders generation, theres a connection to children of men feature, older figure spearheads younger generation
-wow i cant speak intelligently, when the loyal vid premiered it blew my mind, i was so impressed by the feel, the tone that trelkez maintained that was similar, i didnt realize palette had so much muted colors, oh and theres this, so visually stunning, i love how much it harkened back and stands on its own, i look forward to rewatching it the most on the dvd when i go home, so many layers
-excellent vid, extremely intense, i did not feel it until i see the vid, reminds me of my vid, swoopiness
-different ways of doing a remix, we had a lively discussion of how it was remixing, just the song, rewatched CoM vid, once i saw HP vid again, to me i was pulling out, its the child that lived, how many die, long enough to get to that feature
-it captured the feel of the first war and how brutal that was, people who carry the war to the next generation
-i love HP, i thought it was amazing, ramps up in the first frame, urgency keeps carrying you through, omg i can breathe now, sweeps you away, it wasnt just a short story, its ongoing history of this world
-i havent seen older generation vids, on first world war, the sacrifices of that older generation, i want to see it again too

Journey
-so after the death grayness of HP, we were lifted up into the light, the feeling of flying, the sense of the amazing way, the climatic moments, flying along with this character, i needed that, good show placement, the vid itself was so emotional for there being no lyrics or faces, the feeling and mood was so beautiful
-this was the most effective video game pimping vid i have ever watched, it was so visually stunning, completely maintained that strong visualness during entire vid, it didnt feel like it dropped down, no lyrics and didnt know source but i was there from the very beginning, i went on a ride on this vid and didnt get off until the end
-this vid blew me away, machinima and cut games, made use out of using the game itself, in an aesthetic surface way, it changed in tone when they went outside, made me want to see the source, how it was build so beautifully
-i thought this vid was so beautiful and it flowed with the music so well, next time i feel anxiety, im going to watch this vid, with the crazy vids of this weekend its hard to get that
-i was watching and it reminded me of older animation, 20s and 30s fantasia animation, used to be the only place we could take scifi journeys before cgi, superman flies off and he can be animated, this vid to me connected the modern game video game aesthetic to old school animation to places you cant realistically go, this vid took me on the journey, beyond traditional scifi fiction film
-i want to hear from people who've played the game, i know the music very well, what does it have to do with visuals, any relation between spanish music and game,
-its a very, i used to have stress in my life, im okay now game, i cant stop playing the game, it takes a half hour to play, i spend many more half hours watching, i need it
-its a very good game for non gamers, it actually translated very well

Landsailor
-heres what i got out of it and i was right, i didnt feel lost at all even though i didnt know the source
-i knew source, this vid really moved me a lot, it connected to character and all airbenders, i really enjoyed this vid, extremely well crafted, use of male voice was very well done, i was really concerned, i thought it was brilliant with young boy coming in it
-if you dont know the source, what you dont get is because you dont have body language in animation, you dont have as much facial expression, you dont have same emotional connection, the voice of the song was very powerful, it has a vulnerability, it has personal quality, even if you dont know the source
-i didnt know what the source was, this vid made me cry, i got goosebumps again, with no context at all the song gave me so much emotion, absolutely loved it
-the vid seemed mindful of multiple audience, appealing to newbies and people who knew what was happening, admirable thing to happen to vid

Breathe Me
-great use of an orgy, amazing build of using a sexy scene, i didnt know what was going on but i didnt care, it sold me anyway, connection of song to six feet under but vid sold me on it as well
-i vaguely knew setup, i often cant follow vids, if i dont know the source its hard for me to follow, it guided me threw, it was so emotionally powerful, thats the most powerful, i love this vid
-as someone who does know the show, this is exactly the vid i wanted, shows the connections between all the people, shows the little moments, the pairing up of connections between the pairing, works well for newbies of why you should watch it, this is what i was hoping for of this is why you should watch
-ive seen show, beautiful encapsulation of show, the sock made me smile when it happened, shows the tiny intimate moments that shows the connections of the found family of people, friendship and romances, touched on emotional and physical intimacy the show is concerned about
-know show, someone made a vid just for me, the vid did a really beautiful job of showing the shift of tentative early contact, then shows trust and intimacy and the vid captured beautifully and moving and captivating
-i did get the sense they were actively looking for the connection

-i have never seen/heard this show, i am a person who has many star wars feels, it hit me in a specific place, the star wars button place, one thing i do think it pushes that button, the lingering shots on the setting and the ships drove it home for me in a very specific way, its making me have a lot of feelings
-this is a show i watch with my five year old, very surreal, great found family, one of my biggest buttons, vid took the found family aspect and i cant wait to take it home and show it to my kid

I Lived
-im going to try to keep my feels under control, it was speaking back to a fandom, their story is so inherently tragic, steve exists without her, thats not the full story, they both live a full life after that, i love the take of both of their stories and how it worked out
-i want to talk about construction of vidshow, that was a brilliant place to end the vidshow, it was hard and painful and sad but it was okay, it was a beautiful one two to end the first half
-i want to draw sparkly vids around this vid so well, she inspired him, he inspired her, but they both had full lives around each other
-i really loved this vid, one thing stood out to me that i wish was different, the part where it talks to them living full lives goes to them fighting, i wanted more of them connecting with the people in their lives after there...i like watching steve and peggy but it didnt feel like they lived full lives versus fighting a lot
-i see what youre saying, for me what was so amazing was the parallel, we dont get to see the down moments what the fanfic is amazing for, it reminds me of tumblr text post they get along like a house on fire, theyre forces of nature, the vid made me cry so much but its not sad

-i have had the f&f series recced to me and ill get to it, the love of it and fast cars, then family they love each other,

-at end of movie, they have flashbacks of first film, this vid was 3 minute feeling of what i had of what i liked in the beginning, their love for each other, the love for their cars, i really enjoyed this
-i have absolutely zero cares about fast cars, its not quite a recruiter vid, i dont feel need to get into the fandom, i really enjoyed watching it, i really like this vid because its about a source i didnt care about, then it started and i was like oh this is so pretty, i thought it was edited really well, it pulled in someone who its not their thing at all

-this vid stalled me in s1 and this vid was so much more intense and i need to keep watching

-not knowing the source, from the peggy carter vid ive already seen it uses different clips, lots of fight scenes that were very intense, made use of fight clips i had not seen before
-gives you frustration, video cuts between her being effective and her having to deal with being a secretary, even in the present with her job, so effective and so annoyed and at the end she gets to be effective for a bit
-similar thing, i love seeing the faces of the men, they express so much dismissal and frustration and to have that juxtaposed about how competent she is, you see time moving, you see her in the war, then men are patronizing to them all the time

My Library
-vidders like what they like, its a doctor who vid!, i loved it
-i remember seeing previews, are they kidding they looked ridiculous, theyre taking it so seriously and we eyerolled, vid made it look so charming, i would know it for cast vid because its adorable

-if someone told me wild wild west to mm bop out of their minds but it worked so beautifully, they pulled it out of source material, i cant believe im enjoying it so much
-i loved the meta level on which this works, pulling out the lyrics, who will still care, besides mmbop, who else will care about this old fandom and footage, wild wild west lasted forever from black and white to shiny very vivd colors to movies when they were older, this show was one of the many shows of my childhood, fannish meta commentary, well i did for the length of this vid jesus, thank you
-i think it did a pretty good job of modernizing the way the old shows were filmed by the use of effects, oh boy i sure hope the first minute wasnt entirely this, but it calmed down but the screen in thirds and moving on beat, it made it accessible for today, arent they going to cut or do something and it activated it
-the effects were clever way of dealing with disparate source, it rooted in mid 60s, bubblegum feel, brady brunch and partridge family feeling, relevant to now but historicalize among, tactic the footage gives you

Reach Out
-i love the source too much but the song didnt work for me, it was too fixed in a different aesthetic, that clip showed ill be there and you cant say i and be on fred because the next clip is on baymax, i wanted to love it but i couldnt
-no idea what the source is, put off by the white thing, i liked this vid, i was charmed by it, gave me found family, looks cheerful and uplifting
-i agree and disagree, the 70s could have worked, ill be there very quickly, suffered from there and then lots of people are there, hug lasts, i could see a song to the aesthetic but needed to break up the solid hug but if you need it this is a good vid for you

-i was x for reasons, when that pic of kal penn showed up, i went oh shiiit, i wasnt quite ok, the vid was so obviously leading to that moment but it still hit me in the stomach, im not very familiar with house, i should have known better and it was brilliant i didnt
-i thought this was fantastic and impactful, i love how we can count on brad to have vids have well balanced emotion that you care about, i was caring, disturbing stuff and visually interesting and it really went somewhere, all of those elements combined made it very satisfying, i look forward to going back, i thought it was great
-i used to be super into house, s5 was when i fell out of it, it was a beautiful fever dream, want to see it again
-i watched house, i was going no no no, yes, yes yes, i dont buy it, house being sad and then it flipped, it really committed, after i got converted, that was great i was 100% sure, hes having this problem, amber if you knew it, it was brilliantly done, it was flipped, back off the ledge and then he ended off the ledge, everyones on the edge of death and suicide at every moment, i didnt know how anyone could make sense of it unless you knew, it got me hard
-i had opposite reaction, i didnt understand it at all, i understand it at first and then didnt get it, required more context than vid could add to it, didnt play out the way i thought it would happen and then i struggled to catch up
-i felt watching this vid, being able to fully read this vid and deeper reward for getting through season 5
-one of the things made me stop watching house, so little support and care when bad things are happening, this vid highlighted what was there

Landslide
-its very very pretty, i love the long shots, almost wish it didnt have the faces, its a large vid, then at a certain part i realize, its about hogwarts and its about fandom, many of us have lived through harry potter, an entire generation, its not being there anymore, shot of disney hogwarts, the halls are empty out, everything left is a beautiful memory, hurtful memory, empty halls, universal in orlando, song is so overdetermined, get to you or put you off, for me the song always works, taking a resonant and putting on layer upon layer, what we retain, very nostalgic, it was so personal, all the love, all the feels
-i wont have anything to say if you keep talking, from opening bars i was resistant to song, did not last long, this was the building speaking, i like the fact that it took me there, there was images of the characters moving through the spaces, the way its changed over time, my brain filled in the wizarding world of harry potter, it was moving to take the shared imagination
-wizarding world of HP and...i literally grew up, i expected to get a letter anywhere, im getting older too, i thought this was breathtaking, its not about that at all...
-this is a living room that touches upon, it creates a kind of void, she cries into mirrors, ways to make the screen a mirror, it requires a little more, quite an ambitious vid

Boardwalks
-i really appreciated this vid, one of the enjoyment shows happens, boom the hero wins, this is what the hero lives with, his body is torn to shreds, it affects his life, this is what consequences the heroes have, nearly shredded the best friends of his life, its not about action sequences but about his life
-i started to watch because intrigued by the pilot, what does it mean that this guy is blind and has his powers, its all fighting and darkness, this vid showed me theres more to this show, ill finish it now, the question about the betrayal, hes lying to you, stop it, vids often do very well, taking out those character, removing it from the dark
-the end of the vid, music changes, wonderful, different musical sequence, getting back what was mine, last quarter was really well done, doesnt he get beaten down
-i didnt know it was daredevil until he put on the mask, very interesting to me

Zero
-made me see what i had not seen, seen the source a lot, never traced natasha's story the way this vid did, see connections of her being a lynchpin of all the different phases, how radically it changed my vision of the source material
-thats how i see the source material with natasha is exciting, i liked the ballet and experimentation
-one of my favorite vids, touched on central location of who am i and what do i want, shield has been using her the same way, shes going through this transformative journey, what do i want, what do i believe
-i saw it as a meta commentary, the erasure of her as action figure, captain america and not natasha, youre a zero but shes really the lynchpin of everything, it was political meta for me
-i had lots of feelings of this vid, who do you want me to be, natasha doesnt have her own movie, always presented her as a character as others want her to be, who does hulk want to be, but when you remove those lyrics that people project on her, she is a strong character, you can track that, vidder put them together, removing the mask and wig, perfectly led you to that conclusion

We Can't Stop
-i watched this, whose fall into football fandom and i could watch day by day, i love watching people falling into fandoms, then my own team showed up and i was gone, at the same time i felt like you dont need to know what sport this is, the love of the vidder shined through loving the sport, it was all about the feels, it had personal resonance, i can imagine it works on levels
-the thing i like about this is about michael jordan, being really good at being really good, 3 minutes of people sliding and being adorable, being puppies and doing dances and being the other German, i fucking hate that team
-there are sports vids that are amazing at competence porn, this is the opposite of that, lovingly, its so cute and making dorky faces, flips on field and aww dumb stupid puppies
-im not german but scottish, i used to hate football like you, hate american football, look through gaze of feminine goals, i didnt think it was cute and celebratory, it was a lovely reinterpretation for somthing i didnt have good interpretation of it

-its a smash hit in the public but its not a smash hit in fandom, so happy to have a vid in premieres, you dont need to know the show to get the story, would like to know from people who havent seen the show
-shes fucking awesome
-i didnt know the show at all, the metaphor cut like a buffalo, it has so much meaning, i was expecting her
-cut like a buffalo, youre so tough and thick skinned youre so hard to hurt, closing image shes vulnerable, like a buffalo she can be hurt, she does stand tall as a tower
-im inarticulate with love for this vid right now but i will try, let me start with structure, i love how it systematically works through her relationship with people who work on the show, she brings out the best of other people, all the shots with multiple people, with husband, her son, her artist, when they cant get their shit together, she shows up, calls them on their shit, enables them to do good work again, shes not just some generic strong female character, she has a specific skillset, i enormously respect, incredibly satisfying for me, tapped into something very specific about the character
-the single juxtaposition of her leaving prison perfectly made up, that transformation is so extreme, she has remade herself from 0 to 100, shes a performer
-the editing is never the same, theres only one place the vidder cuts 1,2,3,4, now shit gets real, effects are not frequently used, some effects only used once, this woman is unpredictable, she can also be charming and sweet and sexy and that all comes out
-some things that were clear to me, only some points we are watching at least two scenes relating to the same two things, never the same moment of time, it seems to go to a particular effect
-whatever makes you happy, it shows you happy signing contracts, signing your own death warrant
-going to sign a contract to the fingerprinting, different ways of making your mark on the world, fingerprint, you choose where to put that, you can actively alter that
-literal interpretation we dont always like to do, the choking signals illness in a really clear way, if you dont know hes dying, that i thought was great, her being in prison, her being a producer, that literal choice was great
-the choking wasnt just his illness, also about his lies, hes been lying about himself and who he is, cookie can read him like a book, she calls him on his shit because she knows him well, hes choking figuratively, cant write music without her
-fingerprint brought up, a number of shots of cookie's nails, on back, when she stops the door from closing, in conjunction of her body, how she dresses, especially prison shots looking pretty rough to looking like a million bucks, looks like a woman, uses her femininity as a armor but she can be aggressive about it, the vid uses the images on the show, the ability for her to walk in the room and own it because of the way she looks and walks
-all the sepia tone ones were manipulated are all linked to the past, often of her controlling the chaos going on at home, idk what comes next, she says different beat and move it around, shes handling everything
-flashbacks of her taking the fall for lucious, she is presented with snitching choice, i dont know if she taking the fall comes through but its part of the story, the reason she looks like a million bucks, she spent so much time in prison wasting her life for a man and coming out great is a revenge
-hip hop empire on the show, usually hip hop and r&b, song choice makes it more accessible to people who dont know show
-lyrics between cut like a buffalo, also i cut, this is a vid about showing all the aspects of an amazing character, gives you a lot of room to play
-cut a record, cut someone, being cut, my first time through i heard it as ill cut somebody and now i hear, ill cut a record
-the ending shot is really effective, it lingers so long after the music is ending, the music has ended but im still showing it to you, pay attention, yeah and her mask comes off, you see her vulnerability is coming through in contrast to previous, cut like a buffalo, bad ass lady who doesnt take shit from anyone, no she also had vulnerability, effective and comes through
-you see this awkwardness, the performer is rethinking what they just did, it reconceptualizes what they see, it calls back, commanded by someone she loves, terrible and glamorous revenge, showed her being amazing and ruins entire message
-ending tells more than just a boss, shes a human being, she has emotions and feelings, hilariously awful, i like the fact that she is complex, interesting

Hydrogenuine
-in the beginning i appreciated how you dont see her face, you see back of her head, youre her, this is her, youre about to embark on this journey with you, looking over shoulder, follow and go for ride or get the fuck off
-shes looking out over something, the one whose going to assist her, youre going to see the earth first, you see the vulnerability, she makes the choices to get back to earth, shes looking over the city, set up central conflict
-i couldnt stay in my seat, i want to go, i want to go, in the history show, in your eyes, you get that chorus of swept off and i want to go with, i love the song choice for that
-contrast of the first three lines and you are going to assist, sean bean appears at we are at your door, i think the structure of this is amazing, i dont feel like im being told the movie
-ive seen this movie before i saw the movie, after it, i finally understood whats happening, the editing, the action had so much action and spinning and i felt sick but the choices the vidder made and let the action scenes made easy to follow
-theres a lot of resting places for eyes, you get a chance to put that much info on screen and not make me feel rested
-i hadnt noticed that the first time, the resting shots that are held for longer for her face, i have not seen movie, she remains the center of gravity, it brings it back to that, undergoes these transformations, that felt like the right place to pause
-as a fan of the movie, so many things are brought up, celebrating the shiny unicorn of the movie, enjoy the self-indulgence of it, towards the end, a lot of people criticize jupiter, shes not the agent of the movie, jupiter is making the decisions, she tosses the symbol of marriage to ground, she was here for whole thing, shes in the story, it has a meta level for me, look at all the shiny but if you want the discussion you can have that
-im partial to lyrical matches so it says, who wants to wear the..., assist being sung to jupiter, poor jupiter, but then towards the middle end of the film, theres the back of your hand guides you, back of hand controls someone elses actions, but shes starting to use that and people are starting to vouch for her
-could this be love, so often its not oh im looking into your eyes lovingly, this is totally not working, got to rest from all the happy bubblegum feelings
-the music choice, vidder shows who they are, fast electronic that i expected, multiple represented periodic table of elements, i enjoyed that

Comparison of Cut Like a Buffalo vs. Hydrogene editing
-empire has less swoopy swirly ships so less of that
-hydrogenuine has lots of camera starts and then reverses, buffalo does the same thing, showing how you can lose your balance
-both have sections of very high..., summarize a bit of movement and then go back to the action scene whereas in buffalo it has fast cuts but i didnt necessarily understand, cut buffalo shit is going down, some of those thing i didnt understand what was going on, you didnt need them tied together some of the longer shots
-cut like a buffalo doesnt have as much external motion, its working much more with whats going on inside the frame, hand expressions, part of why the quick cutting is so great, gives visual energy, hydrogenuine has a lot more external, is able to show lots of action of swoopy shots, ability to move back and forth which was beautifully braided together
-we talked about club vivid, you picked motion that moves like your body moves to the song

-when i saw the movie, my wife said i dont understand why they cut to their mother dying when that happened, he lost that connection there, the memory of that
-the two part intro was amazing at setting up the old life and the new life, made clear what was being reflected on, made it easy to see the memory element
-GotG feels like found family, the vid got that for me, as he reaches out, the memory of his old ones he can find again, he gets a second chance
-his memory of his mother, the loss he had there, the other people who wanted to eat them all the time, when he meets them he find a family and that love makes him reach out and join with others in a way he does not have before

Sour Cherry
-i was very entertained, if you love losers, you try to describe it, it has captain america, i was super entertained that was one of the slides, that thing we always say
-idk the vidders intention, i talked about i cant use a scene so much because its been used so much, my own memory of me supplying them into the vid itself

Big Bright World
-ive never seen luther, little bit of fannish osmosis, my guess was reincarnation jane eyre into serial killer

-jane eyre, luther, lone ranger, she connected, out of my mind, it was almost like flash forward with reincarnation

-i thought it was interesting, made me think of brad's vid in premieres, took the show and brought it together more than the actual show, theyre all separate and theyre all alone and it brings them all together
-everything i need to know i learned accidentally not because i wanted to (sure), the memory aspects of secrets, some people were remembering things we didnt know about, as the memories came out so everyone would know, epic family feels to get all the hugs

(Dis)Closure
-not sure how well it came across, from fannish osmosis i got the idea from vid, his brothers dead but hes not dead, hes still there, the memory hes holding with him carrying forward is still a person who is living
-i have never actually seen the canon, it seemed like the little brother trying to live up to his big brothers memory in his family's eyes and also his own, im assuming hes evil because hes dressed in black, he found out, oh theres my mother, thats a little awkward
-its a memory because speed racer was available when i was a little child, the flashiness brought that show back
-for me as someone who watched the original, the movie was very much different, it was a contrast because it was flashier and shiner, made me want to watch the movie

Let's Start the Dance
-the memory here, most of other vids are within the characters universe, this is talking about our memory as viewers, i like that take on the theme a lot, i like the energy and dancing a lot, hand colored i liked, it was great
-when you look at pictures, theyre all sour and glum and serious, pictures were very serious, very disconcerting, my cultural memory is from pictures, to see them dancing and laughing, is just tilting on their axis

-this vid made my day, it made me feel so many things and remember how much i love this pairing, blended so many seasons so in seasons 4 and 7 theyre remembering that and still getting back together

-it was very smart how people probably didnt know the source and presented it very beautifully, especially since its 15 years old, please vid more video games
-i didnt know it was a game, 3/4 through the vid i couldnt figure it out, i thought it was amazing so it didnt really matter

Afire Love
-off the top, it was beautiful vid, having been alive and active during that time period, it was like reliving, excellent job from beginning to end and watching it all unfold, it tapped into my ending
-not having been alive, cultural memory, i heard about it, ive seen a lot of stuff, especially people in the community, teeny tiny children in community dont know about this, ive seen stuff online, long posts on tumblr, we cannot forget this, its too important, educating and what it was like being around them, even disconnected from being there, first time a vid got tears out of my eyes, its powerful and so important

-theres aspect of it of forgetting now but also ignoring when it was happening, another aspect of it

The Organization and the Assets
-i cant wait to watch it 20 times, i ned to unpack it, wow, that was a lot
-it was a little scary that memory is subjective, truth and memory are not the same thing
-i really like the vid, i didnt like the dollhouse vid, they were ugly that it threw me out of the vid
-this is the only vid i saw this weekend, on youtube, dialogue clips with music underneath, i see a lot of it online, we as a group dont vid in that style, the music is irrelevant, it was all about the dialogue clips
-very often i have trouble latching on because the dialogue is different, its masterfully done, needs to do professional audio editing
-i wouldnt be surprised if person responsible was a writer, impressed with all the clips went together
-i thought it was a really good vid to follow the next, it talked about who was relevant, worked very well following that other vid
-one of the clips i recognized was person of interest, heard song from, because ive heard the source material, it brought me closer to the vid in that aspect
-i know person of interest very well but it didnt say person of interest to me
-memory is adding something
-im not a scientist but my friends are, whatever horrible things i did, i couldnt...to people, i worry about my friends, it was really great
-it was like a inkblot test, everyones getting something very different
-they brought in the head honchos, they brought that moral compass, are memories are so different
-showed a trope in different sources, they kill the asset and move onto the next one

-what i took from it, the single memory of watching his mother die,
-the last shot is very significant, letting go of the hammer is letting go of past to lead him to that throne

-the memory here was his past that he has no memory of, he discovers it as an adult, that was very powerful for me, i havent seen most of the source but it was powerful for me
-i really liked the vid started with childhood flashbacks, part of the memory of the vid, memories that have since been poisoned, it started out as that childhood memory that was disproven
-him letting go of his past was the man sitting on the throne, the song is about an eagle soaring, if you let go of the memory he's able to...
-him sitting on the throne is the same lie as his childhood

-this is merlin's ex boyfriend, hey you remember me, im still hot, see you
-in terms of more meta fandom style of memory, this vid reminds me of the genre of early merlin vids, some of the first vids i ever saw were really over the top shipper vids, very similar music like this, reminded me of that subgenre of vidding, the whole show went away from that fun, over the top, romping and then the show crashed and burned
-there was a lot of glee over the slash in merlin at first
-main thing i remember about merlin and arthur, this is a contrasting memory of the show
-this kind of vid is how i got my start vidding, this is a delightful after sobbing through most of it
-i was expecting it to show unicorns at the end of the vid, reminds me of possession pairing where the other half of the pairing doesnt show up, arthurs absence was very careful from the vidder, forget about that guy and his memory and date me

Vividcon 2015 Panel Notes (part 2)

Here are my panel notes (part 2) for Vividcon 2015. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but these are not perfect transcriptions. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.

Life After Vidding
Mod: vagabondage and pipsqueaky

-youre vidding and you had a great time vidding and then you stop and cant vid
-its okay to have your vidding mojo wear out
-split into three parts, the therapy part, it gets very depressing, very frustrating, its a terrible hobby, my mojo dried up for 6 years and all of a sudden i started vidding again
-my mojo has not returned yet, its been four years now, im being okay with this, will my vidder friends still hang out with me, i come to vividcon and enjoy talking about it, ive reached a zen place
-i feel if im not vidding, i cant participate, if i dont have my vidding mojo i have nothing
-i know people when they are vidding, cant watch vids, other people when theyre vidding will watch other vids to steal ideas or be inspired
-when you cant vid, one of the best ways to vid is pick a song, pick an episode of a tv, just start grabbing clips, oh i love that scene, its so pretty and throw it on the timeline, your brain gets past the point of i cant vid, youre vidding even if its a piece of crap
-i have more vidding mojo after i finish vids, i get all excited, your creative juices are flowing
-anything that hasnt worked? i tried to slow the earths rotation
-have stopped because i didnt have time, also emotional, not enough room left for vidding
-i was trying to make a vid, it was just work, one more thing i had to force myself to do, instead of forgetting to pee, i used it to take breaks
-if its not fun then why am i doing it, theres different kinds of fun, when im exhausted and im short on time, the kind of fun i want is pringles fun, im going to fuck around on tumblr because theres no effort, with vidding i have to sit down and do stuff to make stuff happen, pringles as opposed to make a good meal for myself that i have to spend half hour in kitchen for
-the longer i go without releasing vids, i feel like im falling behind everybody else, community is going this way and im standing all the way back there
-i came off a two year hiatus, if im going to make something i have to continue my learning trajectory...
-being able to ditch that concept was how i was able to get back into vids, i had four year hiatus actually and the first vid i made after it wasnt ambitious, it wasnt a statement, you can just make a vid to something you like, after that i made 7 festivids [absolutedestiny]
-if you can get that vid out, every vid does not have to be a masterpiece, if you can puke one out the rest will follow
-give yourself permission to make vids for yourself that no one else needs to see
-have someone come over and vid together either in person or online, get a personal cheerleader, just put that song in the timeline and throw some clips on timeline, then think of making something serious
-we are our own worse critics, when i come back it needs to be big and bold and friends will say no, just put some clips on the timeline
-after you make that first vid, you dont like the vid, any advice?
-...exposure exercise, heres what im afraid of, what is the irrational voice saying and then do it anyways, take small steps and do it anyway even though the voice says youre stupid, tell it to fuck off
-i was afraid to learn a new way to vid, i used to do old fashioned capture, still when im making a vid i will have to talk to 2-3 different people, someone talk me through it, get a buddy, get a vid buddy
-the other thing to do, if you try all this and it doesnt work, its OKAY, you dont have to vid, i dont have any vids this year for the first time and im okay with it, im really happy with other aspects of my life, im finally doing what i wanted to do all my life, i have other goals, my creative energy is going to those, ive been putting pressure on myself to do it and it feels like a chore, if you dont have a vid in premieres youre not a real vidder: thats not true
-the thing that overrides should be...new fandom or revisiting an old idea, not i need to make these 5 year old fandoms, find something new and shiny, its my way of being in this community...
-everytime ive had a gap or break, ive broken the hiatus by making a movie vid
-when you feel like you want to vid but the ideas arent there, on whatever social media youre on, tell your friends to toss you vid ideas or what fandoms and what songs they like and put them together and see what comes
-just look at festivids requests, dont sign up, just make a treat
-if you have a hiatus and then you get into a hot new fandom, it can be stressful, when you first vid, it might take you awhile to make that vid, omg theyve already vidded this thing
-i love this fandom, everyone else is making the same vids, why should i bother?, make it,
-it can be new to you, everyone who still loves the fandom, everyone will fall over themselves
-the people who loved the fandom back then are starving for vids...
-does anyone really need this, i had a bucky/steve idea, do we really need another one, are vids a thing that people need, existential
-yes there needs to be another vid for x/x because you like it...remember its fun
-i never get tired about watching a million vids to my favorite characters...
-my one time i vid is for vividcon and this is an intimidating place, i come out saying, i want to vid, later and its a vicious cycle
-the concom hates it, not every vid in vividcon has to be amazing because we've had a couple good years, no make your vid, put it into premieres, its good enough, someone out there will love it, every vid has an audience out there somewhere
-someone loves the luke/hermione vid unironically
-im going to stand up for that vid because it provides years of happiness
-its not like other people are saying it has to be great for vividcon, im doing it myself
-youre being too nice, a con is an opportunity to show a vid to an audience who cant get away from it
-im going to MAKE you guys watch it
-i dont feel like vidding anything but watch this small fandom that no one will watch online but you have to watch it
-maybe if we werent so harsh at vid review, people wouldnt feel that way about Premieres, after vid review some people feel like suicide, if you cant handle negativity, dont go to vid review
-vid review is not for vidder, its for the audience, death of the author
-bringing vids to a con is a brave thing to do, this con is not your audience, they may not care, they may have issues with your vid, its hugely brave
-we tend to conflate vidding and vividcon in our community, our cycles are around vividcon and festivids with deadlines, i cant put my vid out there and what if i put it out there and no one likes it, you can make a vid for yourself, for a friend, outside of them
-i want to make a vid but im too afraid, thats what challenge is for, you can be anonymous
-ive not made a vid thats not for festivids or vividcon
-sometimes signing up and committing vids to festivids or vvc can help get you to do it...
-i still think of you as a vidder because youve made vids i love, but for myself i think im not a vidder, i cant claim it
-if youve made a vid, youre a vidder, if you dont make vids, youre still important, if youre telling us how much you love the vid...
-for festivids treats, if it existed one person would be incredibly happy and it was liberating...
-so many people will pee their pants with joy if you make that vid for festivids fandom, it doesnt have to be a masterpiece
-some of my most satisfying vids were my first three years in festivids...
-i love concrit, i love to hear what people say
-not signing up for festivids, i signed up for back to the future to tik tok and its the only vid i still like
-i have trouble finding songs that anyone other than me will like, list of songs for club vivid that people want, having that list helped make it possible for me to vid
-trouble finding song: ask people, try IRC vidding chatroom, its really easy, plenty of clients to download, great place to ask for songs, im thinking of making this vid, anyone need help
-spotify: search for pre-curated playlists, also related artists of songs
-cdbaby is a great place, small artists, half the time theyre happy that someone knows about them
-i made this club vivid vid to prince and it was super fast shut down
-artists may link vids on twitter with smaller fanbases to expose to wider audience
-some people will post your vid and take your name off of it
-when i have a vid when i want to use lyrics, i will literally google for lyrics like "i will be there for you"
-more than anything, finding support is important, find someone in here and look for support, email, both of you can come up with clip to throw on the timeline
-i think with adobe creative cloud will keep things in the cloud so multiple people can access
-lay a bunch of clips on the timeline with no music, the song can come after, sometimes the music comes first and sometimes lyrics with composing music, you can even switch songs and modify your vid
-a lot of my vids have come from using a song i knew wasnt right and working with the clips helps me figure out what the right song is
-because the majority of what we work for is 4/4 time, its probably going to fit
-make your own mashups until you find something that works
-you dont have to feel like you dont contribute to fandom because you can no longer produce, people leave fandom because they dont create, its not about what we make, its about what we love
-it helped when i was not a vidder for years, please dont insult all the people like me that when youre not vidding, youre not part of the community...you can be one of us for awhile
-ive used up all my ideas, i cant learn new vid tech, then hear song and ask for help guys, teach me how to vid, even if you cant afford new tech there are plenty of ways to help you get free tech and source, people will help you find them
-its doesnt matter what the conclusion of your vidding dry spell is...i havent vidded at all since 2011, im not planning on vidding again but im still going to come to vividcon, im still part of the community
-it makes me crazy that people will abandon something they love because they feel theyre not doing enough, we're all here for each other, yeah we can help each other make the vids but you dont have to..., dont be resentful about fandom
-one of my big motivators, read previous comments on older vids, if im doubting myself, i read the comments and people like my vids, am i insulting commenters because i think my vid is crap
-i like reading comments because it tells me i can do things, if it turns ok...you just have to wait for the person who sees your vid and thinks your vid is amazing
-since we've all made these vids, leave comments on people's vids, it can just be a smile, you dont have to do deep analysis
-i love the ways you arrange the clips to the music...i love them, thank you i had a lot of fun doing that
-we're all part of the community, we all love and support each other, if you see someone struggling help them out, if you dont have any ideas, hook them up with a friend who loves music and can give song suggestions, if you come out of here and its helped you unblock, great and if you come out of here still blocked, thats fabulous

Stop, Collaborate and Listen

-the idea is for this to be different from past panels, much of the time 2/3 of it will be activity based, untested experiment, lets talk about what collaboration is
-collaboration is two or more people together working on a vid, doesnt have to be in the same location, doesnt mean you're my beta, making clip choices together, one person can drive (do the actual vid work) and other is not, that works out fine except when it doesnt
-what are some things that worked well in collaboration
-it helps me to get unstuck, pass it back and forth, your turn, tag you're it
-collaboration for multifandom vid, helpful to split up the research
-you will always find the other person will know things that you do not know
-when playing out the structure, helps the planning process, helps to solidify the ideas, helps to have someone to talk it out with
-as a fellow extrovert it helps me to talk about it
-instant beta feedback to tell when something is not working, dont need to keep emailing back and forth, theyre right there with you
-its fun!!! we made this together, its our baby, it can look like both of us but it looks more like you
-they do the hard tech parts (usually absolutedestiny)
-laurashapiro was able to do the credits and jarrow could help out with tech
-when youre in the flow and you need a clip and you can have someone else find the clip for you so you dont have to fall out of the good part of vidding, you dont lose your vidding mojo
-go get constipated angel and then partner can get it
-different skill sets allows vid to have more expertise going into it versus just one person, different styles can go into it, there can be more variety, different knowledge, different skills
-anything to do with a friend, brought me closer to friend
-what are the things that have not worked, certain challenges that come along with a collaboration
-you have to speak up for yourself and not let yourself get dominated, especially if its a friend and you dont want to hurt their precious feelings
-conflicting vision for the vid
-being able to say, that clip you put in, does not work, kill your darling, im fine with everything but this one clip and maybe thats their favorite clip
-there has to be compromise, you can take out one clip and ill take out one of your clips
-coordinating between tech, my computer doesnt even get along with its own tech
-it can be hard to communicate, we did one together, i was running the tech and she kept saying, move the clip over two frames, i have no idea what your problem with this is, especially if you use two different tech systems or youre tired
-if we know how to put things into words, we wouldn't be vidders
-im telling you exactly how to fix it and youre not understanding, i know this is not right but i dont know what it should be, i know its not quite that, i dont know the fix
-started the collaboration and realize our styles dont match well, we'd be better friends, incompatibility
-if you have two people used to being project leaders, two alphas, it can be tough
-when your collaboration partner isnt pulling their weight, you want to work on the vid, theyre not communicative, theyre not around, youre doing all the work of the collaboration, havent heard from them in 3 weeks
-my J for Myers-Briggs, i havent heard from you...
-you are super pressuring me right now, i am having a life and ill get to it later
-two vidders enter, one vid leaves (no death), we are going to be talking to each other, you dont have to speak if you have social anxiety, we want to expand the idea of collaboration to these other things, help me find a song, be my beta, help with tech, theres a vid where theres something we need that we dont have
-if youre not at vividcon, how do you seek help, is there a secret place
-theres a convention called wiscon that puts together an older vidder and younger vidder, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt, if you email them they can help
-ask your friends, talk to here's luck or way2busymom, they have lots of songs, gave fan_eunice many songs even if its not a collaboration
-theres a large population of people who are frightened of software but have vid ideas, if you can drive, lets make your vid, tell me your ideas and i can make it, can help find people who arent in the vidding community
-even if you dont find your perfect match, there will be vids that get made because of the next twenty minutes
-checklist of things you might need: song, tech, partner, help developing a concept, beta, cheerleading, source
-you dont always know what youre going to do in terms of agreeing to beta, help collaborate because it can depend on an idea, dont want to be awkward to say no to somebody

Vidding Doctor Who

-challenge to vid because so much source, same character but many different actors, a lot of challenges with doing it because a lot of people will connect differently to a story, not everyone is familiar with all the source, new who fans didnt watch classic who, doctor who is spread out 50 years with black and white to very sparkly stuff, vidding wise its fun to play with
-ex. Not Done With My Changes by kass

-one thing with this vid is it has a very specific structure, it starts out with old school, heres the doctor, then follows 9, 10 and 11 chronologically, only times doctor comes back is later on in vid to give history especially during regeneration, it makes it look more epic, it avoids the constant changing of source quality, helps the eye not jump from one to the other, some people dont have issues but i do with quality, it might depend on when you started watching, interesting way to present the doctor without going around the obstacle, also great cvv vid
-another way to vid the doctor is each number is his own person, blurry on the show whether doctor is different, your music choice and narrative is going to be affected, not as much as 9 and 10 but 11 has their own visual quality, there are some people who have never seen doctor who and dont understand so it helps to just have a vid about one doctor but you lose out on the rich history

-team 11 vid, this vid is only 11, amy and rory arent with other doctors but river had interactions with 10 which was not referred to at all, its completely distinct from 10, its how fandom usually looks at him, doctor who is one of the fandoms where you go, thats my doctor, in vidding you have vids that present them as very distinct, vids are focused on one aspect of the doctor that still refer to past
-ex. Ghost by morgandawn
-in this one, morgandawn used promotional footage when doctor who was coming back, it was just narration of 9 running down this corridor, the whole theme of the vid of ghost but it also has this layer of all the people he's left behind, it gives us the richness of the character, i dont know if it was done today with the special of the time wars, would you consider promotional source external? not really, its like using a deleted scene, it doesnt contradict anything, it can be used as a metaphor, running away from past with explosions, here's 11 with all the companions and you can also just focus on just one character
-...do i just use 9 and Rose or 10 and Rose or both, doctor who broke my dry spell, i have a friend who didnt watch doctor who but didnt know what my vid meant after, i didnt handle that well, she didnt get that the character was the same person
-ex. Be Yourself by milly
-my friend (hadnt seen doctor who) watched this vid, thats kind of sad, thats interesting, whats sad...after i explained regeneration, i dont think i would have guessed that from vid, theres always going to be a barrier, people will miss some subtleties, but they probably wont create a whole new character, it took me awhile to figure out what i did wrong, at no point did i intercut between the doctors, i show them as distinct sections, i dont come back to 9 at the very end, supports her theory of he leaves her, she leaves him, bringing back 9 would have taken them back
-you can approach the vid for fans or for yourself and not care or not show it to your friends or show them the show beforehand...

-you do have the doctors that are brought in from the start, you have the different characters, the narrative is relying on the narration, the doctor takes all these women and gives them STDs or kills them, first it starts with glee then it resets itself with clara, i dont need to see it, i know where this is going, the intercutting and motion is so good you dont feel its different characters
-[kass] we wanted clara to appear in beginning because when we first meet her we dont know, it was something agonizing for us, we didnt know where clara's storyline was going
-its still interesting before clara does look different, it does feel like a new character, some people who dont watch the show may feel its the same person

-this is one case where there is so many faces, you wont understand it unless you understand the show
-doctor who has many challenges but please make more doctor who vids because i love them

Vidding as Media Literacy

-i think of vidding as media literacy on multiple levels, vidding is a place where people teach each other media criticism, also knowledge, tools and authorship, we share knowledge of how to rework media thats in our culture, why would it matter to be able to download vs. stream, many of my students dont know that stuff the way we vidders know that stuff, those are all elements of media literacy
-so we're talking about vids that are used as teaching and scholarship but also how vids are used as criticism within our communities, also want to hear experiences from other vidders
-we're all academics, we choose vidders work that we are inspired by...
-big questions that the panel may or may not answer:
-what is vidding in particular that we talk about here?
-what do vids offer culture? (media literacy, fan love, critique)
-potential problems of teaching vids and vidding
-do we lose something when this conversation moves beyond fandom?
-what happens when the same vids get used over and over again to represent vidding? should we be worried?
-how central is fannish love?
-are we developing a canon of vids that people get to see again and again? Us is a good example, i have a personal canon that doesnt always overlap with the vids i show in class
-when these vids are used in these intellectual context...
academic/vidder pairing: cathexys/sweetestdrain/sisabet
-i may know the vidder, i see what they talked about, theres such discussion, not necessary a vid others would show, i showed on the prowl, i taught in gender studies, vids are useful because theyre 3-4 minutes versus reading a story or watching 50 minutes of something you dont know, multifannish vids are usually successful but on the prowl is not, this is me, this is me, ahhh no longer me, to teach this, i used this once before, talking about context, i set up the framework and people did not respond, men didnt get it, i taught it 3 times, once in a fannish class, the first conversation of this kind of stuff, we talked about articles and hurt/comfort, the second time they saw it, they got so much more out of it, what we do in media, this was for self-portrait, this was someone making this as a self-portrait and they got it the third time, youre done now they understand this
-i used kiki_miserychic's princess vid (***Flawless) as an assignment, a lot of people wrote about it and were happy i put it on the syllabus, they had cultural knowledge, i dont think i could put on the prowl on the exam, you need to walk them through, we watch it just like we rewatch it, to layer it again and again, they dont know that im using a vid and doing this cool stuff with it
-sisabet: to bring it back to the self-portrait, it got overwhelming very fast, you always collaborate in case that happens, im done you take it, it went on someone elses YT channel, also the artist saw it and got mad at it, they got really good feedback, the editings great, thank you, we got a lot more reviews, they took off our name
-thats weird, even on livejournal, the fact that it was a self-portrait got lost, people didnt frame it as a self-portrait, they thought it was criticizing fandom, it does take that view, this is something that we do, why do we do this, is this okay, this is really hot, like wesley, yes it has to go up to 10
-the assumptions that we make when we teach vids, we know vividcon, we vid, but what would other people who want to engage with these vids but if they dont know how it works...
-if they dont understand hurt/comfort than the vid doesnt make sense
-we got interesting feedback such as this is the first time i found someone who understands, "it changed my life", we didnt expect that from it
-that question of context and how we frame, does it matter
-at this point it doesnt matter, we can say its a self-portrait but it doesnt matter, it matters what the viewer gets out of it
-thats true but do you want to be that teacher who 15 years later thinks, omg i saw this vid and didnt get it
-how much is it valuable to interface with the classroom

-Lola: my students make remixes, i dont force them, they get inspired and do it, they do machinima and sports, they discover through vids, especially guys, inspired by aesthetics of vids with superheroes, a lot of dubstep fanvids, dubstep festivid scenes, these aesthetics are speaking to my students, i showed flawless
-cathexys: i asked my students, 7 page questionnaire, what fandoms they knew, the only one they all knew was disney, there was always 2-3 students who didnt know big fandoms, disney was the one thing we relied on
-winter class, 3.5 weeks, we watched ***Flawless four times, first time we watched it, i got the less good quality file and they kind of watched it, i showed it to them again in high quality and they were like OH, quality makes a big difference, resonated to the disney side of things and beyonce, it made a big difference when they got to talk to kiki_miserychic, see where she was coming from, they related to her as a creator, it humanized the process for them, it impacted how they...
-kiki_miserychic: when they talked about it, it was mostly in person, well what did you mean, but i kind of think when you watch it, what you bring is what you bring, i like all these things, this is what i like, i feel bad for liking them but why i should feel bad about it, its problematic to like it, am i supposed to like or feel bad, even after i give the explanation, its how it affects them, is it criticizing or are you celebrating it, but in the end what is it
-but you have to come up with a decision at the end

-we teach them to write essays where they have to write arguments arguing one position

academic/vidder pairing: Alexis/giandujakiss: Different Kind of Love Song
-i have not showed GK's vid in my class but i have written about vidding a lot, i made my first vid in 2008 because i took some classes on learning about digital humanities, pushed me into things i didnt want to do, i was already interested in it, i went to 24/7 conferences, i first saw superstar, it changed the way I think and write, it made me want to write about vids, it was a way of creating knowledge, its also incorporating bodies in another dimension, i do queer studies, i go into an academic field to find out who i was, not just because i have thoughts on complex things, ive written about vids, not superstar but maybe someday, last time i went to club vivid and its my favorite thing thats ever happened, a different kind of love song premiered, as i was dancing to it, the commentary that was happening was here, the relationships with gender...
-it wasnt until a year ago that i got a chance to write about it, i wrote to you, i didnt ask for permission (its public), looking for female fans and how hard it was, she does so much with gender and origin stories with race, i wanted to hear you talk back
-i wanted to do a celebratory depiction of fans, opening tag was marketing to us and control our dollars and then control what we do with it, fans rebelling in the freakiness, the fans especially the women, male fans are sympathetic and creators, the fangirls are weird like becky in supernatural, that was not this vid, isnt that awesome, youre the strange ones for looking at us and saying whats going with you, 3rd rock in the context of vid, lithgrow was right, the one thinking us strange are in the wrong, it actually changed from club vivid to go online, hard to find women, just after i submitted it, the charlie episode of supernatural aired, i changed it to add charlie
-i used both versions of the vid, show how the change adds tensions, whether to market to female fans

-we talked about canonized, we use OTW test suite and those are crystal clear arguments, i dont care if theres a canon, i care that its effective, ive read academics that say harry potter is no longer a fandom that the kids know, vids that you dont have the fannish knowledge, superstar if you dont know faith/buffy switched bodies idk

-im teaching vidding but im not sure what im going to pick, most successful when im not teaching vidding, its intro to lit, everyone has to take and doesnt care, we watched never let me go and then played vid, its subtle, this is going along with the text, frat boys went ?!, they knew this text easily
-can you really care about something if you dont care about the source text, i taught math/science course to kids who knew nothing about sci-fi stories, not one of them had seen the matrix, no one cared about sci-fi, i worked my way through class that no one liked but me, do i want to teach an entire course around disney

Vividcon 2015 Panel Notes (part 1)

Here are my panel notes (part 1) for Vividcon 2015. I did my best at hearing and typing as accurately as I could but these are not perfect transcriptions. If you see something and want it corrected (or credit), feel free to let me know as I'd love for it to be more accurate.

Survival of the Viddest
Mod: skygiants

-can equipment still play it, if its saved...
-floppy disks: you might not know where to find a floppy disk reader
-if you have it, its a mysterious file...
-in the stone age before digital files, questions were easier to answer, if you have a tape it might be degraded but itll probably be the same thing
-digital files are fucked:
-lack of identification
-file corruption, we don't know why they become corrupted,
-storage media failure
-beware obsolescence: real media
-insufficient meta data
-digital video is especially fucked
-larger files = harder to store, people dont tend to commit to storing, i dont need this and i could use the space
-more complex files = more thing can go wrong, you have audio/video stream, subtitle track, something can go wrong with one of them, complex to preserve it
-non-standardized and proprietary format, no right or safe format and harder to rescue, understand how to preserve pdf, theres a million formats for digital video and theres always new ones being made, mp4 can mean a million things, if we dont use them in 10 years, how am I going to play this back, if i dont know what they are we dont know its broken
-remix video is fucked above all things- all of previous plus:
-copyright issues
-hosting challenges: there is no site that will protect for years
-greater anonymity: we know why we dont tie our real names into it, if want to refer to vid but dont know who made it, it came from youtube posted it three times, dont know who actually made it or when they made it, 10 years down the line makes it hard
-places that preserve things like libraries, archives, museums are interested in it and theyre run by grants and are afraid to make it accessible because of copyright issues
-institutional culture is not 100% hostile
-there are canonized vids: ex. Us by lim included in museum
-blurb is interesting, oblivious to what fandom is all about, gives credentialscredentials, gives Library of Congress, describes herself as a vidder, dont really know what means, doesnt embed in vidding culture, i find worrisome for preservation of vids
-henry jenkins text talks about danger of canonized vid, academically worthy, relatively small subset of vids as a whole
-leaves out vids on youtube like femslash disney crossover vids, vids that are not part of that conversation
Vid Survival Strategies
-Upload videos to more than one locations (lots of copies keeps stuff safe)
-are they for profit or nonprofit, how long have they been around, whats the notice and take down policy like?
-nonprofits have more of a commitment to keeping stuff around
-how stable is the organization
-plug for internet archive, horrible to search, very non copyright based (its illegal), very low that anyone will find it because its terrible to search
-sad tale of imeem, many vids went up there, then they went away, gave 5 days notice, then lose vids if theyre not backed up
-1a) if you really love something, copy it (respectfully), dont download/repost if note is put, the more people download it, the more likely someone will have it
-can have many copies of digital files which helps versus analog where it would look worse
-appropriate vid titles: youtube put up and take down for total eclipse of the heart literal, cant tell now who made it
-embed metadata in vid files for download, can put who made it, vid notes, dont repost, helps for download not so much streaming site which strips down, adobe premiere/final cut allows you to do so, can batch files with programs, might not be able to read in future but another way to keep safe
-put in info about source, can make it easier to claim fair use
-its easy to win fair use battles but need to make a big stink, i interviewed buffy vs edward, tried to take it down and then YT tried to monetize, made a big stink and now its back up
-they took down videos for copyright class, they wrote to them and clearly fair use and nothing happened, but they knew someone at Youtube so they were able to get it taken down
-keep track of original vid master copies, ideally dont just put it on streaming site
-beware hard drive death, they last 3-5 years, keep an extra backup, recommend 3 copies with 3 geo locations but not always practical
-keep multiple hard drives, buy different brands at different times
-also beware file format obsolescence: later on realize can't play them, think about upgrading and remastering
-floppy disks are safe and know where it is, or usb stick but if we dont use them in the future then stuck with something you cant play
-checksums: want to make sure things dont go corrupt, most mac computers have md5 that generates unique fingerprinting of that file so if something changes and you run the checksum, it will tell you if something is different
-can checksum each month and itll make you feel easier about file storage
-a note on file naming: name files you will recognize later, dont use the same filename twice, dont use characters that confuse computers (use letters, numbers, underscores)
-use a trusted server to offer videos for download, use friends, buy your own, use amv.org, ao3 has a plan to host vids on their own servers, they had this plan for 5 years, make sure the servers will be there for a few years or wont get taken down quickly
-cloud storage: the cloud is great as a backup or an alternative, it is always someone elses servers, like a different server site like youtube or video, usually for profit, what they commit for today, they can change their mind, throw one copy but not always keep
-send it to cons as they keep their own files, only reason we have Us by lim HQ is because VVC sent it back to her
-submitting vids to convention, many cons besides vividcon dont keep track of files
-critical commons videos: another hosting site, mostly academic content, good place to store, nonprofit, define themselves as an archive
-critical commons welcomes vidders, not just academic
-youtube wouldnt allow titanium vid, want to start critical commons account, you need to be an advanced user (academic) but they will allow vidders, you have to say something about video, you can just say "this is a fan video for agent carter", im going to try to use that, very friendly
-coming from podfic community, no loss content because jinjurly has personally hosted all podfic with significant time and money cost, she allows all to archive, everything available for download, is there a reason why fanvidders havent offered to do that: size
-there are a lot of "unlimited" sites but if its not website facing then it wont let you download files,
podfic has a very centralized community that vidding does not here
-i am currently chair of fanvid OTW committee which hasnt been doing much, only me on committee, two projects: some version was talked about at town hall, dark archive: place to stash stuff, if you put them there, you can get vids there, you can get to the stuff but you need to go through a few doors, this is a plea to join the committee, the second is youtube, i want to talk to google lawyer who used to work for EFF, otw used to work with him, we want to develop a remix committee, things wont be taken down without a human looking at it
-internet archive as backup: they take it and store it if youre willing to wait
-ive been taking older vhs videos and converting them to dvds, partnership with university of iowa, they dont have infrastructure to store or give away, they just hold them, there are other people who are already doing this
-if youre putting it back on vhs, the equipment is becoming obsolete, tapes deteriorate, doesnt do much good to have tape if cant access it
-long term digital preservation uses LTO, they dont deteriorate as fast, very expensive, it's if youre storing huge files, not for personal archive
-if you backup stuff at your house, never ever store backup somewhere you dont feel comfortable, no extremes of heat and cold like attic or basement, safe deposit box is another option
-to be safe: have third backup in on another coast in case something geographical happens (earthquake, hurricane, etc)
-if you have a big collection somewhere, pass it around, dont make assumption that other people have vids, ive been last source of vids, please share your stash
-make a list of people who are willing to share their stash
-community where you can look for vids such as vidfinders on dreamwidth and/or livejournal
-is vidder giving permission to share my stuff, if they dont have download/streaming link
-the intellectual property laws on orphaned works is pretty terrible
-if they dont put credits on it, i dont know who to ask for permission, uploading for wider distribution not okay but okay for friends
-more vidders dont put their name in the title of the vid, its so simple and helpful
-llamaenc will store names of vidders in title

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Nummy Treats

-i was online one day, 14 years ago, we were messing around, we saw this vid and thought what the hell, we had seen some slideshows, back in the early aughts, we found these, what is this, they must work for the show, we'd have these wild feeds, there'd be one camera, we must have stumbled upon an early feed, obviously theyre professional but after seeing this vid, i got obsessed with it, i watched it a lot, thats amazing, thats storytelling
-i stayed up late that night, buffy eps downloaded from kazaa and napster, it took like 3 days, whats this on my computer, windows movie maker, imported footage into it, i stayed up all night making vids, i did a thing, showed my sister, what? this is amazing, you should do more, we need more episodes, we need fool for love for sure, my sister created headtilt.com, place to put vids, churned out windows movie maker vids...
-i was cool with that, my sister handled with talking to people, im not going around talking to strangers, we watched that movie last week
-my sister told me that we have an email from luminosity, thats bullshit, shes a professional, we received an email from wendy starting a mailing list called nummy treat, we joined the mailing list, we met valerie because she also had a website, she was opening up a forum on bandofbuggered, well maybe i like valerie, i can talk to these people, not strangers but that would change
-once we were into nummy treat/bandofbuggered, it was spike centric before we even started, let me take you back to the early aughts, you had your kittens, my sister was a kitten but she was ferocious, dont fuck with them, my older sister was a bat, they were crazy, you had your ducks, maybe the ducks were my people
-at BOB (bandofbuggered), there was a lot of camaraderie, once we got to nummy treat the magic started happening, we're these tiny baby vidders, i made a thing, Luminosity (lum) would watch my thing omg, shes much better than working for the show

-this was unique, Spike wasnt portrayed as charismatic, whose in love with mean old Buffy
-this vid was very instrumental for us, theres some really cool things going on here, im in windows movie maker, shes holding my hand, it seems like theres some stray frames, thats okay because i understand WMM
-one day here's luck (HL) was in nummy treat, she started at the same time as me, was contemporary, HL went to VVC in 2002, then she put out Glorious #1 on Nummy Treat, HL is a big spuffy shipper from way back
-i went, oh shit, thats quality shit right there, ok lum, what do I do with this thing Premiere, the feedback on the list for that vid was...that was well timed, we would talk about interpretations, trying to talk me out of using literal lyrics, because by god if i see fire, there'd be fire
-I got Premiere, the list encouraged feedback, it was a very exciting time, you wanted to put stuff out and talk about it, i havent had something like that since, it created a lot of vids i love and connected us to a greater community, i didnt know about cons, Lum came to my house and put in videos and showed me...
-it was all about spike, everyone made a spike vid, including me once i had Premiere

-the reason im harping on spike vids, he was an interesting character no doubt, i got in a lot of fights over what his character is, i dont know if anyone told you but i love angel a lot, at one point you had to declare your allegiance to spike or angel, i said but angel loves spike
-it was interesting to explore all we can explore about
-such as what exactly is critical feedback, what is its purpose, renenet was a big advocate of getting a beta, listening to your beta, it was shaping us
-some of us were attending Vividcon, we brought back stuff from VVC back to list, trying to make better vids
-started vidder bootcamp on bandofbuggered, we had a lot of fun with video bootcamp, we had some disturbing vids come out of vidding bootcamp, we were all scared of dualbunny, she made this watership down vidlet, i still have nightmares
-lum comes to help out with vidder bootcamp, help make ourselves better vidders, better feedback, better at lyrical interpretation, some people said, this is too hard, we said this is bootcamp not vidders dance and spa, there was that flameout, im just here for fun (fart vidders)
-Vera put out a vid that shut down the rest: ex. Schism by Vera
-effective character study, she did a ton of photoshop tutorials, she made games, doesnt vid anymore, also did buffyverse dialogue, firefly cd covers, she was on nummy treat, talk about amazing character study, spike was standing up falling down, so effective, hit on music, i dont need to make anymore spike vids, ive got to say this about the character, ok ive said it now move on and do something else
-huge playground and big sandbox for buffy and angel, there was something for everybody, we didnt have to just use same spike clips, i had planned out spike vid with footage that goes backwards, theres other things happening on the show, all the rest of the people were fighting over my ship vs your ship and whether slash is terrible and youre bad people for reading it, all the vidders (not saying we werent fighting) were at least exploring different topics, lot of things to say about buffy and angel
-ex. Fragile by eunice and myrtle (theyre all babies!)
-they did something interesting, uh guys, theres all this other stuff thats happening, other people in vidding community had already figured that out such as torn, behind blue eyes that had nothing to do with us feral vidders
-all you need to say is, i want to do better, youd get feedback, i got feedback about the circles, someone noticed that?, when someone figures out what youre trying to do, you will forever continue trying to do that, i think youre doing things with circles and lines, its amazing, we became much better, it was fun to see people exploring things, we dont have to keep using the same clip
-ex. Superstar by here's luck (made 7 months after Glorious #1, i sent feedback saying KNIFE)
-we have to do this now, it was great, steal the things that were working here in this vid and end of the world/rebel yell, dancing above the grave
-discs from slayage con 2004, spent the rest of the reason frakking out, did vidshow for acafans who had no idea, bless their hearts the vid was most successful was Whatever by Luminosity
-nummy treat had support, renenet put a vid up and youd get feedback from her, itd be really in depth and really great, we all moved to LJ, now twitter, can i tweet you feedback, 140 characters is not going to do it, im too tired and dont check my email anymore
-things happened onscreen that i did thinking i was first to do them, no idea that someone else had already done it
-we were in buffy during s6/7, theres others, 10 years later awww its a buffy vid, theres a separation now, doesnt take away that Schism is fucking amazing, not saying nothing else can be said about spike but in two years we said a lot about spike

-what we're talking about and not talking about, im talking about at least 3 distinctive narrative sources and make connections, not talking about crossovers and RPF fandom vids, star trek (various star treks), etc are single fandom, this sounds like festivids discussion
-panel is divided into two pieces, the first is the philosophy of the multifandom vid, second part is technical/practical stuff, things to keep in mind, things will come from personal experience of things ive fucked up
-when we're creating a multi vid, some things are connecting them together, can be complicated like these three kings and historical connection (vid: The Lightning Strike by obsessive24), wow we like beating the crap out of men (theres layers there) (vid: On the Prowl by sisabet and sweetestdrain), i like the color blue, heres multi source (vid: Blue by kuwdora), heres all the source i have on my hard drive (vid: Party Rock by kuwdora), that becomes complicated for things ill talk about later
-back in the day, the multimedia vids, kitchen sink vids the big idea was everything but the kitchen sink (garbage can vid), "rescue me" song, throw everything at it in terms of danger and saving
-club vivid multi vids, look at them all dance, move in sync with each other, move to the beat, connectors are all visual, i have a dance vid i want to show a brief clip of
-ex. pic of making starships in living room, this is what will happen, look at that disc, its on the floor (upset voice)
-ex. Seven by hollywoodgrrl and ohvienna, made by david lynch, disorientation versus specific narrative connections (also there was that as well), visceral level of connection
-in a lot of multi vids, something about director, genre, actor, something sociological interesting, someones dissertation when something happens in that genre, i always think this is the representation of different fen, representation of blog post of genre
-genre of multi vids, like dancing, vidding version of supercuts, all of the things that x happens in different media [ex. Shut Up and Dance by MsTabularasa]
-all the films of a certain director and isnt this fantastic
-...because youre drawing connections between the different connections and narratives, its on the edge of things we're touching but since I've made it, i have to include...
-have to figure out what youre doing....there are 112 sources, i will show you spreadsheets like youve never seen
-there are great multivids that work with 3 sources, your arguments are going to be specific to the connections between the three of them...
-you lose some of the individual nuances in making the larger vid, youre the director, the voice is going to be your voice, cant show just what joss whedon is saying, youre the one pulling out these connections, if you find it scary that your viewpoint will be the loudest in that vid: stop but its actually gratifying as hell
-other multi vidders: can you speak to that experience?
-the one multi that i made is give it up (by jarrow) for 80s movies (also narrow escape has 4 movies), there was a movie that i couldnt fit in, maybe 1 shot from that movie worked but there was a narrative that i could build without it, the vid was stronger by having fewer sources
-similar approach with 20 sources versus 100, id get my primary sources, especially if im making an in depth vid that has an argument
-figure out your argument before you sit down for the source, itll take longer because you need...i made a vid and i was accidentally organizing two different arguments against genocide
-lets say you want to make a vid about robots, drill down on it, what do you want to say ABOUT that, draw 2-3 levels down, sort out feelings about people being robots, that will help narrow down clips you use...
-ex. On the Prowl by sisabet and sweetestdrain early draft with organization text
-premiere hinged on single image that i wanted to put in a specific place
-figure out your argument: the scariest part on a big multifandom vid, figuring out where to stop, define really strict restraints, otherwise i never stop acquiring stuff, inevitable comment of this wasnt in it and i cant tell them why
-how you pick what sources, i want to work with fandoms that i like, i want to pick things that people have heard of, do you get lost in tvtropes, then you spend 10 weeks trying to find things, trying to be history of fandom, researched fandoms we weren't in, now we have to pick things everyone knows versus i like this its going in
-i rediscover my love of tv and film whenever i make one
-hourglass in a different kind of love song, what counts as a..., people are fans of lots of different things, things that are in my experience, i had to define it really tightly, for mine i think of it as anchor fandoms, these 4 big fandoms that will appear many times with little clips from other fandoms, we come back to these touch stones
-multifandom vid i dont anchor, i steal from fandoms, im creating a fanfic and im showing fandoms that show this reality, even theme that i use, how i decide what goes in or not depends on story in my head
-the flipside of educational tool to find stuff i havent been exposed to before, if you have a negative multi like the price, there was sources she was not familiar with, she now has negative feelings toward all the terrible scenes where women get fridged, it turns a person off sources

-you can take multiple characters and turn them into one character, i did a portrait of my roommate carol, made representations of this aspect and that aspect, it was strange but people got it
-if im the viewer watching the source, as a viewer is it important for me to know the sources or is it important that a thing is happening (how far out are you looking at the source)
-kitchen sink notion: this is why i forgot i made narrow escape (by jarrow), i dont feel like i made something with 100 sources, i forget that 4 fandoms count vs more sources for multifandom vid
-a lot of people use the number 4, it depends, it depends on the song, what is the intent when im presenting it to the audience, when a song is divided into 4 like most pop songs are, more than 4 means its interchangeable, tried to fit 5 fandoms into 4 fandom song and it didn't work
-if you dont have song before clipping fandom, why...the requirements for multifandom vid, the organization affects the song, you can fight the song in single fandom vid but its tougher for multisource because there are so many different fandoms...once i made a vid with non repeating multi source...
-i havent made this song, the song doesnt say everything i have to say, i dont know if i need to make this mashup, i dont know what the second song is
-i had one, i watched pacific rim, mako is asian with a streak of blue, ive seen that a million times, theres a ton of them, im going to make a vid of that, its been years, ive heard a song, oh its perfect

-definition of fandom can be slippery, might be a vid and might not, dont do it on a deadline, thats the worse ive ever done, festivids was a nominated fandom for festivids, was it a multifandom vid (Silent Fandoms by ghost_lingering)

-made a vid out of music video source, pop stars have their own fandom but not typical fandom, brought them together regardless of fandoms (Celebration by sweetestdrain)

Make Mine Multi (part 2)

-Source Acquisition: bessyboo can get many different sources if you need help finding something, jetpack_monkey can help with classic movies (feel free to ask them)
-if youre making a smaller number of fandom vids, you usually know whats going in, what about if youre going for a lot of fandoms?
-IMDB's keyword search, user submitted so you wont get everything, some things are not what youre looking for, some robots are not what youre looking for, tvtropes are amazing, 3 weeks later when you escape from tvtropes...
-local library, amazon have books written by people who care enough to write a book, often small presses that dont have copyediting and proofreading, useful, google and know your keywords, use quotation marks, wikipedia has lists of many things, look for foreign language lists
-3 fandoms i found that were key were found on sci-fi forum, a post a day about spaceship movies, hard to find but i found a guy smoking a cigarette in space
-didnt know about the sources that would be in it, used google images that gave me visual feedback of what i was looking for
-when im looking for good moments with a particular character, shipper_manifesto on LJ has lots of episode specific moments
-no matter how you find your source, keep track of it, google docs has spreadsheets at home or work
-ex. multifandom vid spreadsheets, keep track of year, name, key moments, characters
-dont buy something unless youre sure you want to use it
-bironic set up a matrix for starships, ex. acquired, ripped, ratios, interlaced, clipped (yes/no),
-notes, color coding can be helpful, method of acquiring (dvd, youtube, own, torrent, itunes)
-interlibrary loans are very helpful
-made clip notes without set vocabulary ahead of time, use tags, otherwise theres different words for running
-watch things in fast forward, esp in vlc
-...either sentence type description, sometimes exclamation points if its awesome, make sure you note stuff you love
-clipping is a personal preference, these are some suggestions
-the source does not rule the vid, you rule the vid: especially for multifandom vid
-if you have two clips and they go well together but if they both look bright green and it doesnt look good together, you can fix that, dont go, Kubrick wouldnt like it, KUBRICKS DEAD..., kubrick can suck a lime
-find the tools in your program so that the clips fit well together unless you dont want them to
-in a single fandom vid, you follow the narrative more but in multifandom vid, its all about the choices, it is scary and bewildering and amazing
-do what works for you with clipping, color correction, aspect ratio changes, bars can flicker and it doesnt look good, figure out early on make technical determinations, are you willing to mix 4:3 and 16:9, later on you have to make the choice on how you deal with it, i remove black bars but dont have to, can mix b&w and color but next to each other distinct difference can break someones brain, might need to turn down saturation
-sense8 fic is the next fandom trope...
-working on a short time limit can be great, there can always a better clip, need to trust your gut, shorter source can be easier
-...time limit, most of us know how fast we work, can take longer, can be shorter because you can just take iconic moments
-starships would be more intimidating with a longer timeline, i couldnt make it if i didnt know sources ahead of time, when youre on a short time limit, having a structure can be helpful
-communicating argument: ex. Different kind of love song by giandukiss
-hardison clips are huge, that shot of klingon dictionary is the real world book i own, we pull out to fictional tv show about geeks, we go to supernatural fanfic, monk messageboards, meta episode of xena (fannish osmosis): this is going to be a vid about us through them
-foreground how many sources we're using: ex. the lightning strike by obsessive24, 3 setup clear in the beginning, dont need to see the faces, can recognize at least one and pull out what the vid is about
-ex. The Price by thingswithwings: manpain vid, foreground 5 main sources, those characters ground the vid
-the beginning is not the only important part, if you have over 20 sources so when things you havent seen are popping up, its not jarring, then suddenly a source pops up 20 seconds in
-ex. The sellout by sisabet and sweetestdrain...they go to buffy and xena, they named them using the song, we know we're going to stick with these guys
-if you have a lot of fandoms and you dont have all of them, remind people at the end that there is more
-ex. starships by bironic, brain fills in all the starships, boom boom boom, movies and some tv, then have old spock and miss piggy in space, ok any argument that you dont have everything is invalid because theres people made of felt in space and i didnt even touch that
-astronauts move in the movement of the starships
-dont use all the source, need to choose the best clips for the vid
-disagree slightly with make it clear what sources are in the beginning, make your choices intentionally and not accidentally, oh we're using this source and then later on introduce buffy, strategic reasons to add fandoms later
-thats a way to build tension and narrative, if it just looks random it doesnt work but can do it for different reactions
-its really easy to lose track of what fandoms youre using and then later theres all this other stuff, but in my head i saw the story in the beginning
-only rule of multifandom vid is be conscious of your choices
-when taking notes where im clipping, if i see a clip that looks similar ill pair them together, ill have multiple clips that go together, thats a good starting place so its not a big pile of clips
-clip simultaneously with vidding because it can help show you what you need
-you can do visual connections between clips to do callbacks, with multifandom vids, visual callbacks can remind of the past and create parallels
-the sellout: on the prowl making it worse and worse, we wanted to mimic on the prowl...
-how can i organize this in some way that it has some kind of build, needs to have a reason besides heres 50 clips of the same thing
-dancing with myself by jetpack_monkey, gene kelley dancing on the timeline, echan said, why? if i wasnt married to you why would i watch this vid? its got gene kelly hes awesome, its a clip show, echan laid out sections of dancing by himself, with props, animated characters, grouping is a huge way to build, you can figure out meta build, you can create smaller builds within those sections, use eunice emotional roller coaster vid, can start lower and lower, can group different types of characters
-Starships (by bironic) was all in my head, i had sections in my head, i want part where they fly, spaceships, lay out for emotional arcs of joy, second multifandom vid (Feels So Electric) had less arc and doesnt have as much build to something
-stressed out on what goes in vid in the first place, crowdsourcing is stressful, oh did you use that clip and i didnt realize it was a thing
-honestly, miss piggy: fuck the haters

Due South: 3 Fannish Waves

-(general categories) there are peaks of fannishness, one when the show was airing, the second wave was two mini waves, one starting in 2003 and one starting in 2010, that first mini peak brought people into the second peak which is goodie two shoes by laurashapiro and pipsqueak and my vids (sdwolfpup), it died off again for a little while and it seems like theres been a resurgence from 2010-now
-differences between the waves which realized is not many, well the early vids were fraser/rayv, then kowalski came and there was fraser/rayk, then it came into the threesome and a broad show experience, phase 3 is more turnbull and maggie, exploring outer edges of world and research didnt really match it, theres fraser/rayv, then fraser/rayk and fraser set to sad folk music
-certain elements carry across, for such a happy show, why are the vids so sad, these are sad people
-there were categories and genres of vids, i indexed a lot of vids, i could have gone through each one and find the fraser/victoria vid from each wave and the canada vid from each one, most of the vids are similar throughout the 20 years people have been vidding it
-gen vs slash vids, when i submitted a vid to mediawest it was immediately classified as slash even though i thought it was a character study, people thought due south was all slash
-...i took the vidders word for it [gen vs. slash?], there was a decent mix, the fraser character vid is a species of vid thats existed for a long time and its often gen, also a lot of fraser/rayv in the early stuff
-one of the things i connected so much, the relationships came from the backstory world, you connect to them because theyre making connections, theyre all lonely and they relate to each other, isolated people being each others life raft
-i knew about due south but i havent seen and i just started watching the series from the beginning and something i noticed was there was a lot of emotional depth, the first episode fraser's dad is dead and ends up kicked out of his own country, but it still has a soul to it, it has a sense of humor and hope, you can move on and keep doing good things
-the show makes me very happy but when you think about their lives not as much
-you've got the hamlet thing going on, with vecchio you have romeo and juliet going on, if shakespeare wrote it, theyd all be dead, its like hamlet with a happy ending
-the tonal mix was the attractor, my feeling was the undercurrent of sadness made the show funnier, layering something in sad makes your joke really funny, it makes these moments with fraser very stoic and red [outfit], for a fan you have a wonderful palette, it makes the moments much better than if it was just relentless comedy, theres not one due south story even if the one i wrote took a long time, for vids i remember them being stylistic in their moment, it was What I Like About You with three couples with fraser/rayv, jim/blair and bodie/doyle and i was like whose that guy with the nose, it was the slash vid of reason by analogy, it was a classic vcr vid that said if you like one, youll like the others, i hadnt seen the show but i know who they are in multi vids, we dont see anymore, the later vids cant hear the lyrics [wonder of birds by laurashapiro and morgandawn] and then polar bears later [Icebound Stream by sisabet], shes doing something similar but taking vidding risks, it used to be dont put in external footage and i think due south vids...
-that vid captures everything we talked about, its still so hopeful and joyful, wow i was really overcome by that
-first wave vids, they feel like due south vids, theres a lot more humor in the vids, i dont know why i thought they were all so sad, maybe because you saw...
-rewatching roll to me with source knowledge, one thing that really hit me is the wrong guy, right situation, i didnt get why there was a shot of the basketball court and now i do, omg

-that vid has a very now aesthetic to it, it feels like a youtube vid (its tumblr), thats what tumblr fans are doing
-two comments about goodie two shoes: i was in college when mtv vids came out, i never thought anyone could top the adam ant video
-she adored the song because it used the words subtle innuendo and who uses that in a pop song

I saw The Normal Heart when it first came out and it emotionally destroyed me with the main pairing and the LGBT community's struggle to fight AIDS. My knowledge of AIDS activism was very limited so the movie helped bring the early struggles to light for me. I heard this song last summer and found it to be a very powerful song especially the ending that brought in the family aspect. It seemed like the perfect vidsong to me but I couldn't think of what fandom had the powerful family relationships I needed - until I realized that family can also refer to a community of people such as the LGBT community which would fit perfectly with The Normal Heart. After I realized that, the structure of the vid became clear to me and I realized I could use historical external source to make the queer community aspect more broad and diverse than was shown in the movie to hopefully make it even more powerful.

I had intended to make this vid for Escapade but after I got into a new ship, I didn't have the time to make this vid as well. Then the VVC Memory Challenge theme worked perfectly with the vid idea and I didn't have time to make my two initial Challenge ideas so I decided to make this vid for Challenge. The clipping was fairly painless and I read about AIDS activism in LGBT communities and watched a few documentaries about it including the two I used: We Were Here and How to Survive a Plague which helped provide some incredibly useful footage. The vid made me cry a lot while making it (especially the ending) but I figured that was a good sign for the emotional reaction I was going for. thingswithwings provided some super helpful feedback that made the vid even better and in the end, I'm really happy that I made it and with how it turned out.
