I fiddled with my friends list. If I deleted you it's probably because your entries are frequently long and you don't use ljcut enough. No offense, but you mess up my friends page. My entries are virtually all friends only so if for some strange reason you enjoy reading my lj and want to be added, shoot me an email.

I've been talking to my sister and she wants you all to know that she's grateful for your prayers and concern. Her cell phone is working again and anyone who wants to call her is welcome to do so.

Our mom didn't get much sleep last night because she's uncomfortable and the CCU is not a quiet place. We're hoping that she'll get moved to another room this afternoon but they've said she's not going home tomorrow. We haven't been able to talk to her doctor so we don't know why they're keeping her longer than they'd originally hoped.

If she does get moved this afternoon I'm going to take her a big bunch of purple flowers. That should cheer her up.

Thank you to everyone for your care and concern. It helps me to know that my mom is in your thoughts and prayers. I'm exhausted so I'll just paste here what I posted in the thread in MPSIMS:

I just got back from the hospital and can report that she is doing well. They want her to stay flat on her back until they're sure that the incision on her leg where they went in with the catheter is closed up. If all goes well they will move her out of CCU to a regular room in the cardiac wing tomorrow and she might go home on Monday.

My mom has always been proud of her vitality but she says the heart attack has shaken her self confidence. I think her emotional recovery is going to be as important as her physical recovery.

She is resting comfortably now.

Lise and Bill are out of town without internet access; I'm making this post open so that those on my sister's friends list who are not on mine will get the word.

Please give blood.

The Red Cross is pretty desperate in the DC area, but I imagine the situation is the same elsewhere. I donated in October so I'm eligible again now and I have an appointment to give tomorrow evening. In October we had a little MAD Bloodletting Party: Panache and Ultrafilter gave at the same time and we went out for delicious juicy hamburgers afterwards to get our iron back up. This month they can't make it so I'm going alone, but the Red Cross has called me twice to ask if I know anyone else who can give.

Please donate blood if you can. If you're a better man than I am, like my wonderful brother-in-law, please donate platelets. Thanks for listening.

Starbucks is the devil: One month ago I bought a regular drip and when I got back to my office I noticed that I couldn't smell the coffee but smelled the cologne of the guy who handled the cup. I sent them an email saying that my experience was ruined because I couldn't smell the coffee. They mailed me four free beverage coupons, and I got venti lattes with them. Now I can't go back to the regular drip! Just plain evil, I tell you!

I survived

I'm at work - not because I'm so dedicated, but because the office has power so I can charge my cell, and I was hungry and needed COFFEE!

The cable TV and modem went out at 8:30 but I could still watch DVD until the power went out at 9:30. Rain seeped in under the front door, but the basement is still dry.

So strange that the sycamore scared the shit out of me when it broke, but I slept right through the bigger trees coming down. The front of my house has two giant cedar trees right up against the wall. The one on my side is OK, but the one in front of the other half of the duplex split in half and is in my front yard. The other neighbor lost four trees all onto their neighbor's roof, but the roof and windows are intact. Just luck, that.

Dominion Power says we should get used to the power being out and I've no doubt that it will take a long time in my neighborhood: One block away there are three utility poles in a row snapped in half and the power lines are lying on the ground. So it's not a matter of cutting the downed trees and re-stringing the power lines - they have three poles to replace.

I will not be able to post from home for a while.

My shoe phone still works!

Very calm at the moment. They say the very heavy rain and wind will happen in the next four-and-a-half hours. I've made a bed along an interior wall in case any more trees decide to throw their limbs at my house.

Very strange that the power is still on, since the power goes off about twice a week here.
I've been standing at the back door watching the trees. It's mesmerizing. The woods behind my house aren't thick, but the trees are very tall and the tops are blowing wildly in all directions. I've seen two large limbs snap already.

The rain is coming under the front door despite the sandbags, but not under the basement door (which is the one I'm more worried about) yet. At the moment it's mostly wind - the heavy rain is expected later.

Kyle came home long enough to shower and charge his phone, but he wants to be with his buds through the storm so he's gone again. He wants me to turn the 'puter turned off most of the time since the power has flickered quite a bit already, so I'll update later if I have juice.

I'm home now.

They closed the office at noon which is unprecedented. They have never before closed the office ever for any reason. The office has been open through several severe blizzards, and stayed open during the "permafrost" a few years back when DC imposed a mandatory shut down within the city limits and the gov't officially requested that all businesses in the area close to conserve power.

But that doesn't mean we are getting paid! We are welcome to use annual leave or work out a schedule to make up the hours before the end of the month, but the company will not pay for the closure.
Very strange, this: I called two hardware stores yesterday and asked "Do you sell sandbags?", the answer was no at both. At the little hardware store where my son works, I also asked "Do you have and suggestions?", and they said "Try Home Depot".

When my son came home from work he said that they sold out of sand at 3 in the afternoon. Excuse me, WHAT? They sell sand in bags, not sandbags. When asked "any suggestions?" shouldn't they say "Well we do sell sand in bags." ??

Now I have sand. It is in place outside both of the doors subject to driving rain. The bags are about 20"x10", so I got three for each door and used big garbage bags around the bunch to take care of the gaps. Six bags of sand weigh three hundred pounds!

In other storm news: All schools and government offices are closed today; the subway and bus system is shutting down at 11am this morning, and I still have to go to work!

I'll update this afternoon if I still have power.

I'm getting nervous about the storm. There is no question that the rain is going to come under two of my doors. Several local gov'ts are giving out sandbags, but only to residents of that county/city. My county, Arlington, isn't doing it. Home Despot doesn't sell sandbags and I'm trying to thing of alternatives without spending a fortune. Like mulch, triple bagged so the mulch doesn't get wet. Any ideas?

How do you get out of a lease?

I moved into this rental 2 months ago, and signed a one year lease. I think I'll be ready to buy a place in a few more months. At least I'm dealing with a landlord, (not a big rental office) which I think might make it easier to break the lease. Any suggestions?
