I have been busy working, studying the electrical code (so I can take and pass an exam later this year) and recently, doing taxes. On the fan side, I've been watching Cartoon Network when I can. My stress level has gone down greatly since I stopped watching the news and started watching cartoons at supper!

I suspect everyone has already seen this, but this is a music video for one of my favorite shows, "The Regular Show". enjoy!

<lj-embed id="60" />

Don't forget that tomorrow is Groundhog Day! So get up early to follow the excitement. If it's cloudy, that will mean Mitt Romney is going to seal the nomination soon, but if the groundhog sees his shadow, we'll have six more weeks of Newt Gingrich.

Putting myself in someone else's shoes

I'm going to try to go to a hospital today in Louisville to see a friend of mine. He's been in a bad way for a while. He can't quit drinking, and he can't successfully commit suicide through drinking himself to death either. Although he's tried both repeatedly over many years - and I do mean suicide literally, not as some inflated figure of speech. I'm grateful I found a way out before things ever got that bad for me. I just wish I could help him find his own way out. Unfortunately, he's a classic case of someone who is to intelligent and to educated to allow himself to be helped. It's sad. But it doesn't relieve me of my responsibility to offer to help again.

I've been eating much better since I stopped watching the news at supper time and started watching "Johnny Test" on Cartoon Network. It's a kid's show, but with lot's of Easter eggs for adults. Like jokes about shaved yaks. (Anyone else remember "Ren and Stimpy"?)

http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/johnnytest/index.html?atclk_gn=link_shw_Johnny-Test

Dukey is my favorite character.
As some of you know, I quit drinking eight years ago. But I have no problems with other people drinking. Hey, if you enjoy it and control it, go for it. It's been eight years, but I remember how bad it sucked the first six months or so after quitting. So I can vouch for this link as being pretty accurate:

5 Things Nobody Tells You About Quitting Drinking

http://www.cracked.com/article_18824_5-things-nobody-tells-you-about-quitting-drinking.html

Hilarious... scary.... true!

The Yellow Submorons

We really had a lot of fun participating in the show this band put on last night... they had just about everyone participating in some way or another. Worth checking out!

http://www.yellowsubmorons.com/

They play the music of the Rutles, which was fun to hear at a Beatles Festival (Abbey Road on the River) that we were at. I'm not THAT crazy about the Beatles, but I was given two tickets. Glad we went. It was quite an experience!

The Rutles were a parody of the Beatles created in the seventies. It started as a gag, and ended up being a made for TV movie, staring people from Monty Python, Saturday Night Live, and others. George Harrison plays one of the interviewers. The music is by some members of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (the same band that plays "Death Cab for Cutie" in Magical Mystery Tour.

The music video for "Piggy in the Middle" is a classic! Check out the full length movie online, starting here:

The Rutles All You Need Is Cash: Part 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu3T_2GzXSo

I finally did it!

I bought the 13" MacBook Pro (model Model: MC374LL/A) I was looking at. It's pretty nifty so far. I love my iPhone, and will always have it with me, but it will be really nice to have something that will give me a full computer while I travel or while I'm at a meeting or what not. More later.

The only thing left to consider is whether I should add the extended warranty, with or without accident protection. I'm inclined to not do so, but after having to take my wife's Laptop in a few times for repair, I have to wonder. I treat electronics with care, to be sure. But accidents apparently do happen. Especially to people who are not tech people. On my iPhone, I simply bay my regular insurance policy for personal property to cover loss or breakage. Maybe I should do the same with this.

We got my wife an iPhone yesterday. Now we both have a laptop and an iPhone. Although her laptop is not a Mac. But I really didn't want to relearn Windows for the nth time!

Back at MacBooks

Now that I know the new Apple operating system is not coming out until Summer time, I went back to Best Buy and looked at the MacBooks again. I'm leaning towards the smallest MacBook Air, as it is not going to be my main computer. I started with the notion of an iPad with a keyboard. so maybe I should keep it simple, and think of this as a travel companion, an iPhone on steroids, not a main work computer. As it was, I kept thinking "for a little more, I can get this feature..." and bumping up to the next higher machine in my day dreams, until I talked myself in to an expensive machine, and thereby talked myself out of buying a MacBook.

I should add I plan on buying a Mac desktop down the road; this machine could be a portable extension of that in a way. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Fantômas is a metal band I like that makes artsy post-modern noise metal that sounds like it should be a soundtrack to a cartoon or something. So naturally, people use their material as soundtracks for cartoons. This one cracks me up, and I hope you enjoy it too; the editor synced the cartoon material up well to the music. The source video material is a Disney cartoon from 1929 called "Skeleton Dance".

<lj-embed id="56" />

To many Christmas jingles stuck in your head? Here's the classic performance by the Plasmatics from 1981 on Tom Snyder's show where they blow up a car in front of a live TV audience as part of the finale. Now THAT'S entertainment!

<lj-embed id="53" />

Now that's my idea of "Classic Rock".

The power of books

"Solzhenitsyn’s books were very anti-Soviet, but they didn’t liberate you, they only made you more enslaved as they explained to which degree you were a slave. The Master and Margarita didn’t even bother to be anti-Soviet yet reading this book would make you free instantly. It didn’t liberate you from some particular old ideas, but rather from the hypnotism of the entire order of things."

-- Victor Pelevin
