8.01 reaction
So, just watched 8.01 for the 2nd time around, & posting a few thoughts

- Was kind of disappointed that there was no "wow" moment, for all that it was a really solid episode.
+ Love me some Benny!

Thoughts on Benny -
*"a lot has changed in 50 years" - so Benny went to Purgatory around 1960
*vampire - so, when was Benny actually born?
*cajan, the homestead said "La Faette"(?)
*How exactly did Benny know where he was burred after he was killed (assuming that was his skeleton Dean dug up)
*(added) Just why was Benny hanging out in that cemetery?

- Seriously hating Sam's vet. The whole scene when she was bullying this stranger who brought in a stray dog that he had hit into taking the dog. What is she basing her opinion that this will be a good dog owner on? He even tries to tell her that he is on the road a lot - he is very much not presenting himself as good owner material. Hate this scene, hate the vet based on this scene.

? (added) who was outside the vets house when Sam takes off in the night?

? How exactly did Sam know to show up at that cabin? He specifically said that he didn't get any of Dean's messages. Was it just random chance?

- Sam saying that this was the first time he was alone. Wasn't he alone when he went off to college?
+ I actually don't have a problem with Sam going off to live his life. That is what they said the would do, and that is what Dean did when Sam went to hell, after all.

+ Love me some Kevin! Leaving Crowley standing in a field with goats... priceless!

Source: deadspin.com

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo has spoken out in favor of a Maryland ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage. Yahoo has published a letter that Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. wrote last week to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, urging him to "inhibit such expressions from your employee." This is Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe's response to Burns.

Dear Emmett C. Burns Jr.,

I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland's state government. Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level. The views you espouse neglect to consider several fundamental key points, which I will outline in great detail (you may want to hire an intern to help you with the longer words):
1. As I suspect you have not read the Constitution, I would like to remind you that the very first, the VERY FIRST Amendment in this founding document deals with the freedom of speech, particularly the abridgment of said freedom. By using your position as an elected official (when referring to your constituents so as to implicitly threaten the Ravens organization) to state that the Ravens should "inhibit such expressions from your employees," more specifically Brendon Ayanbadejo, not only are you clearly violating the First Amendment, you also come across as a narcissistic fromunda stain. What on earth would possess you to be so mind-boggingly stupid? It baffles me that a man such as yourself, a man who relies on that same First Amendment to pursue your own religious studies without fear of persecution from the state, could somehow justify stifling another person's right to speech. To call that hypocritical would be to do a disservice to the word. Mindfucking obscenely hypocritical starts to approach it a little bit.

2. "Many of your fans are opposed to such a view and feel it has no place in a sport that is strictly for pride, entertainment, and excitement." Holy fucking shitballs. Did you seriously just say that, as someone who's "deeply involved in government task forces on the legacy of slavery in Maryland"? Have you not heard of Kenny Washington? Jackie Robinson? As recently as 1962 the NFL still had segregation, which was only done away with by brave athletes and coaches daring to speak their mind and do the right thing, and you're going to say that political views have "no place in a sport"? I can't even begin to fathom the cognitive dissonance that must be coursing through your rapidly addled mind right now; the mental gymnastics your brain has to tortuously contort itself through to make such a preposterous statement are surely worthy of an Olympic gold medal (the Russian judge gives you a 10 for "beautiful oppressionism").

3. This is more a personal quibble of mine, but why do you hate freedom? Why do you hate the fact that other people want a chance to live their lives and be happy, even though they may believe in something different than you, or act different than you? How does gay marriage, in any way shape or form, affect your life? If gay marriage becomes legal, are you worried that all of a sudden you'll start thinking about penis? "Oh shit. Gay marriage just passed. Gotta get me some of that hot dong action!" Will all of your friends suddenly turn gay and refuse to come to your Sunday Ticket grill-outs? (Unlikely, since gay people enjoy watching football too.)

I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won't come into your house and steal your children. They won't magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won't even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?

In closing, I would like to say that I hope this letter, in some small way, causes you to reflect upon the magnitude of the colossal foot in mouth clusterfuck you so brazenly unleashed on a man whose only crime was speaking out for something he believed in. Best of luck in the next election; I'm fairly certain you might need it.

Sincerely,
Chris Kluwe

P.S. I've also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your "I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing" and shove it in your close-minded, totally lacking in empathy piehole and choke on it. Asshole.

As his body fails and his personal demons are brought to the forefront, Dean finds himself, his brother and his family again.

Beware, make sure you have a while box of tissues at hand! This is absolutely heartbreaking, but amazingly well written, and I know it's going to be one of my favorite touchpoints for a good long time to come.
I loved that Dean was thanked, whole-heartedly. Especially since it was by someone that I'm sure that Dean thinks he failed. He had told her the ghost was dealt with & she & her friend were safe, but he and was wrong & her friend died & Dean didn't get to them in time. For Dean that was just making for more guilt, but she said no, you didn't send the ghost, and you came back to deal with it - she didn't blame him at all. I think he really needed to hear that.

REPOSTED

I am the girl kicked out of her home because I confided in my mother that I am a lesbian.
I am the prostitute working the streets because nobody will hire a transsexual woman.
I am the sister who holds her gay brother tight through the painful, tear-filled nights.
We are the parents who buried our daughter long before her time.
I am the man who died alone in the hospital because they would not let my partner of twenty-seven years into the room.
I am the foster child who wakes up with nightmares of being taken away from the two fathers who are the only loving family I have ever had. I wish they could adopt me.
I am one of the lucky ones, I guess. I survived the attack that left me in a coma for three weeks, and in another year I will probably be able to walk again.
I am not one of the lucky ones. I killed myself just weeks before graduating high school. It was simply too much to bear.
We are the couple who had the realtor hang up on us when she found out we wanted to rent a one-bedroom for two men.
I am the person who never knows which bathroom I should use if I want to avoid getting the management called on me.
I am the mother who is not allowed to even visit the children I bore, nursed, and raised. The court says I am an unfit mother because I now live with another woman.
I am the domestic-violence survivor who found the support system grow suddenly cold and distant when they found out my abusive partner is also a woman.
I am the domestic-violence survivor who has no support system to turn to because I am male.
I am the father who has never hugged his son because I grew up afraid to show affection to other men.
I am the home-economics teacher who always wanted to teach gym until someone told me that only lesbians do that.
I am the man who died when the paramedics stopped treating me as soon as they realized I was transsexual.
I am the person who feels guilty because I think I could be a much better person if I didn’t have to always deal with society hating me.
I am the man who stopped attending church, not because I don't believe, but because they closed their doors to my kind.
I am the person who has to hide what this world needs most, love.

~*~Repost this in your journal if you believe homophobia is wrong.~*~

~*~Spread the love. ~*~

9 Disney Combat Princesses

Disney Princesses as D&D characters - love it!

"Pocohontas reports over a dozen orcs and Ariel's already embedded with the captured villagers," said Mulan calmly, "so Jasmine and I will engage the main force. I'll need you, Belle, to provide some fire support for us. Aurora, the chieftain usually hangs back so your task is to keep him from being effective. Meanwhile, Snow, you send in some animals as cover so Ariel can sneak the villagers out. Tiana, you stand by to take on casualties, and Cindy, can you make yourself useful for once?"

9 Disney Combat Princesses

SPN 6.02
Just a couple:

I really liked the episode, but how could I not - BABY!!!!

I loved the whole premise of shapeshifter breeding. Made worlds of sense, when you think about it. Especially (as someone else pointed out) when you run the timeline back so these babies were being conceived right at the end of last season, when word had gotten out that Lucifer was free & the apocalypse had begun - makes sense that the monsters would be propagating like bunnies.

Kudos to the actress who played the 1st mom. She did such an awesome job of acting really freaked out, without freaking out the baby she was acting with. Baby was happy as a clam.

Dean was awesome in all the baby scenes - I loved it when he was dealing with BobbyJohn in the check out line! And giving him whiskey on his finger - My Gran used to do that for teething, which would be just about right for the age of the baby.

I also loved how Sam was actually *seeing* Dean as he was interacting with the baby. He really was studying Dean and I think seeing things he hadn't been, like how good he is with kids, but also how much he was drinking.

The Dean and Ben scenes all hurt. They were well done, and Dean knew he was fucking up, but they were hard to watch. Dean and Lisa on the other hand were awesome. Lisa saying she would shoot him if he didn't leave, and telling him while he wants to be with her, he also wants to be out hunting & she understands that. Dean is not a construction worker. I love that she has insights on him that he doesn't, and she is working towards him getting what he needs.

The Campbells still give me the creeps, especially with Samuel & the mystery caller (I've heard suspicions of Crowley - now wouldn't that be awesome). And Sam conferring with Samuel about Alpha lore - I don't think he overheard the shifter in the motel room, but he seemed to know about the shifter Alpha before that, so did he intentionally use the baby as bait? Jury's still out. I'm sad to see Mark the something twice removed get his neck snapped though, I kinda liked him.

Alpha shifter was very cool - no skin shedding, able to mimic clothing as well, all very cool.

SPN 6.01
Sam struck me as so off in this episode. I expect that things are going to be different with him, what with the whole going off to hell as Lucifer's vessel issue (of which we have no details actually) but much like Dean seems not to, I don't have a handle on him yet.

One thing I did get from him, is he still doesn't understand his brother. He stayed away for a year, insisting that that it was for the best for Dean because he "knew how much Dean wanted a family." Yes, Dean was tired, & getting out, or at least slowing down, in the hunting life was not something he seemed to be opposed to... but I firmly contend he did not want a family, he wanted his family. Which Sam took from him. First in a wholly understood & approved fashion (jumping into hell to save the world) but then a second time by not letting Dean know he was out of hell.. almost a year ago. By consciously deciding to not let Dean know that he was back, I think both Sam, and Bobby, have hurt Dean more than they may ever realize.

And now Sam is off hunting with his "new" family, rubbing it in Dean's face just how much he is not needed, & how worthless Sam finds him. All echos of what Dean has heard from Sam before. Something we have always seen in Dean is this need to be needed. Sam has made it abundantly clear he no longer needs Dean. What need he has for backup he has met with the Campbells, nicely replacing Dean in his life.

I think this is the driving force behind Dean staying with Lisa. Lisa & Ben need Dean and want him. The need in Dean's mind is from the fact that he has discovered that his presence has lead the monsters here, and the want Lisa very clearly spelled out in their talk. Dean being there made Lisa happy, but I think Dean was not really happy in his life with Lisa. He was making the best of it because he had promised Sam he would, and because of gratefulness that she took him in & tried to help him heal, but I don't think he was ever truly happy. Content maybe, but not happy. How could he be? His soulmate was missing.

I fully understand Dean's decision to stay with Lisa: Sam neither needs or wants him, Lisa does.

I am less understanding of just what the hell the Campbells are up to - they really make my spidey sense tingle!

Looking forward to so much more!

And as often happens, right after I post my opinion, I go read a much better worded one over here.

A positive attitude means more than simply ignoring harsh, unnecessary negativity -- we must actively combat it. As a member of fandom, I pledge to share my admiration for every writer, every artist, every mixer, and every reader by leaving positive feedback when I can, and respectful, constructive feedback when I need to. In return, my opinions will be respected and my journal will be a safe place for fandom interaction, no matter what views are shared. --

I love every author who's work I read, and I read a lot. I respect them for putting their work out to be read - no way you'd find me writing fic for public perusal, I'm just glad everyone else is!

I have occasionally left the "constructive criticism" type post, and my biggest pet peeve is authors who make it hard to find their work when they post multi part fics (no master list, no linked chapters). I want to read their work, but some authors make it really hard to do so.

But even then, I am appreciating the work. I just get a little irritated that they don't let me admire them as much as I want to sometimes!

insta!rec - SPN fanfic

(Now that the table is complete)

Gossamer

leonidasden said they would be putting up a chronological listing, so you might want to wait for that, but the whole table is awesome. I'm not sure what summary the author would prefer, but mine would go something like this:

Title: Gossamer
Author: leonidasden
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Dean/OMC, Dean/Sam
Warnings: dub/non-con
Word Count: 30K+
Summary: In which Dean is a fairy and leonidasden is a genius.

Bitching & Moaning

Freely admitted ranting:

Something that really ticks me off? Multi-part fanfic that is posted without connecting links. No master post, not even a unique tag. Drives me up the fricking wall.

Yes, I know that I don't have any ground to stand on in that this is freely offered writing and I have no real right to make demands but come on! The author would not be posting their writing if they did not want people to read it, so why the stink do they make it hard to find the chapters? Especially when they post them into a community. padacklesrps* seems particularly prone to this.

Bah I say BAH!!!

*grumbles off to bed*

*I've spent the last hour trying to track down chapters of a fic there that were all posted with no links (hence the rant) but this is something that drives me nuts on a semi regular basis. Apologies to all the wonderful writers that do take a moment to think about us readers & update master posts & links when posting! It is appreciated
