I first learned this back in the summer/fall of 1990 as a young Private. I remember the power of saying these words then, when we thundered them across the GA swamps in unison at our Drill Sergeant's direction. We felt indestructible, and that we would gladly die defending every word of the creed. 18 years later I am sitting at Camp Ripley going through the motions of being a Sergeant because I have "Been there, done that" and getting a bit tired of the Monotony. Then my 20 soldiers spontaneously erupt into the creed and I find myself joining them. When we were finished, well I won't say we were crying , we don't do that, but there were definetly tightened throats and swollen hearts. Even our 1st Sergeant, meanest, toughest, roughest, son-of a-bitch in the company could only nod and walk away.

Odd call

I was called to today by a man from Primerica Financial Services, apparently affiliated with Citi. He called because he found my resume on-line and was interested in my experience as a leader in the Military. He went on to tell me that the company is looking to expand her in the area and looking to open up 60 more offices, etc... When I asked what they did he said they provide financial services to consumers from "the side of the consumers" rather than the larger institutions and what not. It didn't matter to him that I know nothing of finance things as he stated the company would train us and that they find they get a "better quality" of people when they go outside mainstream financial areas. He wants to meet with me at the office in Maplewood and talk more about it on Monday night.

It seems very odd to me that a company that deal with money/finances would recruit like this.

What do you all think? Esp Mistress Hypoxia.

Run Results

As I posted earlier, I did the Mpls Recycle Run on the 20th of April. For not having done any serious running yet this year I did ok. I ran it in about 38minutes or a 12:13 pace. Gives me some numbers to plug into for a goal when I run another 5k later this year. Not sure which one will fit into my schedule yet but I will be looking.

So. I just got a call on my celly, wrong number as usual. I mean I bet I get about 4 wrong number calls a day. usually it's a damn fax trying to send over the phone.
Pet peeve #134 - Fax beeps on my voicemail.

Anyway, I answer my phone with a cheery "Hello".
I get a pause and then a male voice with, "Who is this?"

anyway we sort out the wrong number business and then we hang up but I am left thinking about how fucking rude people are.

If you call someone, ANYONE, then when they answer your first answer should be a hell of a lot nicer than, "Who is this?" or Kat's favorite, "Whodis?"

so...do you have a cellphone pet peeve?

The girls had their first swimming lessons of the year, mommy had to go with The Deuce for her class. I came along and decided to do a little light running. Figured it would be a good idea to try and run once or twice before my 5k this weekend. I did a mile really slow. 10 minutes, but I felt strong in the legs and strong in the lungs. I was worried the knees would rebel against me but they chose to toe the party line and be strong for the "warm up" run. The 5k isn't about racing as much as it is a catalyst for me to get off my ass and do something to get in shape. There is another in August that I will also be attending.

Eventually I will get my time down to a nice cozy 8 minute mile for competitions. It's always fun to see a 200lb guy cruising around the track doing 2 minute laps all day long...makes peopel stop and stare, then push themselves that much harder.

You know me, I am all about motivating people, now if only I could try motivating myself...

Took my oldest girl to see her very first live baseball game today. Took the bus, then the Light rail downtown to the Dome and saw the Twins battle the Royals. Sadly the Twins lost but it was still a good time. Not to mention that the seats katznjeep got from work were great! 19th row up from the 3rd base line. Aj fell asleep during the 4th inning and slept til we left the game. I think it was all a bit too much for her at the wise old age of 4.

I want to know what kind of person would go to a school to protest some Veterans coming to talk to the kids about what it is to serve in the Military?

I understand folks are against the war in Iraq, I get it. Hell I have always been of the mind that we should have finished Iraq off during the first Gulf War but that's just me. But usually these same folks are the ones to put up the "I support our troops but not the war" type posters in the yards/windows.

These HEROES did a job that most folks can't even begin to understand. They saw things that would give most of us nightmares let alone sleepless nights. They watched people die, and not in the pretty Hollywood kind of way. If you have ever seen what an assault rifle actually does to a body you will know what I mean. They killed people. Think about that for a second. Think how that is going to affect someone for the rest of their lives. To know that you took the life of a person. I personally think these folks have something very worth listening too.

I doubt very seriously that these people are going to paint the war as any kind of red, white, and blue holy crusade for all that is good and just in the world. They will tell their stories from their own points of view.

How could you not want your kids to learn about a war from, oh I don't know, THE PEOPLE ACTUALLY FIGHTING THE DAMN THING?

And yes this stems from the article regarding Forest lake Area Schools in the Red Star.

In an effort to grow our Risk managment buisness, our boss wants us to try and get out there and sell our services to people. Personally I usually think sales is someone else's gig. I already have a job to do, and no it's not kick ass and take names, despite the rumors hypanebliss spreads.

Anyway I stumbled on a lead quite by accident and now have a meeting with the lead and the boss this afternoon. At the Hotel I work at is an area of wholesale clothing folks. One of which is the guy who sells suits to the hotel for dirt cheap. I was told to see him if I needed anything so I stopped in. He's friendly and likes to chat so we started talking. he found out I do security other than for the Hotel and we started talking about his expo that happens like 6 times a year and needs security for. Well, he wants to cut back the price as the retired Cops he has now take him for 350$ a day when they work.

Did I mention I have no idea how to actually be a good salesman? Anyway I want this to work out for us, mainly because I want the boss to see how damn good I am and hurry and get off his ass and make me a full time employee ( of which there are none as yet).

Also we could get a deal on suits. Since we are required to wear them at some gigs this is not a bad perk either.

ps Z-Z has all the Littlest Pet Shop bobble heads in the house lined up like some sort of Roman Gladiator fight in the Kitchen. I gotta go see how this plays out!

I am apalled at the state of our society today where no one takes accountability for their own actions. It's fucking ridiculous. I know my parents taught me that I was responsible for evrything I did, good or bad, and that sometimes meant having to deal with the consequences of my actions.

The youth today seem to be not getting this message. I blame the parents... parents are getting too soft these days. Now I am by no means preaching "spare the rod, spoil the child". Just hold them accountable for their actions, and maybe teach them to be polite and respectful of others while your at it.

Case #1.
Saturday at the Local. A man leaves his leather jacket draped on a barstool and then proceedes to attempt to pick up a girl on the other side of the bar. Basically in a separate room if you will. When he returns to his stool 30 MINUTES LATER, he finds his jacket gone. Of course he wants security (me) to do something about this imediately. In fact he demanded I do something.

I did. I told him not to leave his stuff unattended in Downtown MPLS anymore. He also wanted me to walkaround and ask everyone in the bar if they had seen the jacket. I told him to fee free to do so himself. I said that a number of jackets have gone missing these past few weeks and that folks need to learn to keep track of things. He then decided to fill me in on my job duties. Apparently I am to make sure that if I find an unattended item on a barstool I am not to let just anyone pick it up and take it with them. I should make sure the item belongs to anyone who approaches said item. I should have also warned him as he entered to watch out for his jacket.

man, I guess that will kill my chances for a raise.

p.s.
My partner at the door remembers carding the guy and that he wasn't wearing a jacket when he came in.

that's how long it's been since my last posty post...what is your record?

Why the official decree now you ask? A recipie for my families version of Borscht. blueyeddevil asked for this for this one and I am happy to oblige. For you real chef's or those that are waqy to snobbish about cooking out there I have some notes for you. This is a Polish White easter Borscht (Barszcz), which is more like a stew actually. No beet will be found here. Also there are no hard rules for ammounts. Use a big stock pot and adjust the ammounts to fit it and your taste. in the ingedient list I put the ammounts I used this year in parentheses so you have a clue. For best results, make the Borscht and let it all stand in the fridge for a couple days before eatting. This will really bring out the acidic falvor of the mix.

Ingredients:
Kielbasa (2 lbs. bought at Karmarczuk's)
Bacon (1/2 lbs.)
Eggs (1 doz; hard boiled)
Onion (1)
Celery stalks; chpooed (didn't use any this year)
Spices: Salt, Pepper, Horse Raddish (ground), celery saly, garlic salt, etc...
Vinegar
Thickened with a cup of cold water and about a 1/4cup of flour mixed well together.

How to:
1. Fill your pot with enough water to use for the soup and then add your Kielbasa and "boil the hell out of it" as Grandma Desm used to say.
2. While that's working cut up the onion and eggs to add to the stock
3. Fry up the bacon. I cut into little pieces first.
4. Remove the Kielbasa, add the eggs, onion, celery and fried bacon bits AND the left over fat/juices into the stock and keep boiling. The bacon fat gives it the smoky taste.
5. Add in your spices and taste.
6. Cut up the Kielbasa into pieces and add to the mix and let it all boilf for a bit.
7. Add Vinegar to taste. (You don't have to do this but make sure you have Vinegar at the table so guests can add it to the Borscht)
8. Thicken with the flour/water mix and let cook for a bit more.
9. Eat and enjoy.

*add in some big chunks of a Dark Rye bread for a real authentic bit. Make sure you have plenty of Horseraddish and Vinegar on hand for eating.

For my Spiritual friends: There is a special meaning for the ingredients in this version of the Borscht that have to do with the Crucifixion. Conjure with them at your own risk. Whether factual or not , they are still part of the belief associated with this soup.

Pork (sausage/bacon etc...) Was the only meat given to Christ to eat. At the time pork was only eaten by pagans.
Vinegar= he wasn't given water or wine to drink, only Vinegar
Spices (Horseraddish etc...) = the harsh spices he was forced to eat.
Eggs= Rebirth

So there you go, my traditional family Borscht recipie. I love it, but then again I have had it every year now for 35 years and it keeps getting better.
