Heartbroken

It is with deep sadness that I write this-- I lost my baby girl Tigerlily Socks tonight. I needed to say something more than a facebook status, and I wanted to thank everyone who helped me out when I needed it for her vet bills--you allowed me to have several more precious months with her.

I take solace in the fact that she is no longer suffering and will no longer need shots for her diabetes anymore. She had a good life--she was 17 and still as sweet as ever. I think she knew that I was ready to let her go because I didn't want to see her suffer, but she went on her own terms at home before I could get her to the vet. I also take comfort in the fact that I got to say goodbye and hold her so she knew how loved she was. I've had her since I was 10, and it's very hard to think about how she will not be waiting for me when I come home--for two-thirds of my life she has been there. I picked her out as my first pet for me when she was 3 and half months old. She was one of the sweetest cats ever, and I will always love her. I only wish I could have done more for her in the end.

I hope you are running, playing, and being the mighty huntress again baby girl. I will always always love you. <3

Cat Update

Tigerlily:

PV:

(I apologize for the bad camera phone pics, but it's whats most readily available.)

I thought I would post a cat update--I had hoped to do it sooner but work and frequent vet visits have kept me busy. She is doing well on the insulin so far, but we still have to get her sugar level down, which means one to two day vet visits every week and a half or so to change her amount of insulin, test her sugar and try again. Unfortunately, there is a lot of trial that has to go on, which is more money. Her sugar levels are down to the upper 200s/lower 300s currently (which is down from well above 600). Our target is upper 100s. She requires two shots a day, but is doing ok with them (she is a little sore where she has to get the shots). My other cat is doing well since being on antibiotics for a couple of weeks. Soon, I will have to get her tested again to make sure the kidney and urinary tract infections are gone.

The vet has allowed us to give her post-dated checks, but the cost has still been very high and hard to handle. I've taken deferments on my student loans to be able to move that money over to help with the vet bills. Thanks to chiara_scuro's suggestion in my last kitty post, I have been able to create a button for one click donations (see the end of this post).

Once again, I know money is tight for everyone I know, but if anyone can spread the word and even just give a dollar it will help. I am also willing to do stuff for people in trade. I can edit papers, do some accounting work, legal research, research of any type really, cook, bake, clean, etc etc, and I'm willing to trade any of my skills for help in aiding my kitty.

I would like to thank all my wonderful friends who have offered me support so far during this trying time. The kind words, donations, and general love and support I've received from you guys is very comforting. I know it's cliche but words simply cannot express the gratitude I have for everyone right now.

It has been decided by Melissa and I that Mary Wollstonecraft is a whore and liked author gang bangs, especially when she was being pounded by Swift (in the ass), Dryden (from the front), and Pope (in the mouth) all at once.

That is all.

p.s. Swift totally enjoyed smacking her ass with a riding crop, and sometimes Pope too, just for shits and giggles.

Some things I have learned...

...in the past three weeks since being back at school...

* Indian/South Asian literature really intrigues me, and so far the class has been very enjoyable. I'm interested to see what else I will be reading this semester.

* Apparently some school systems tried to ban the teaching of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the 1980's on the premise that the act of teaching it was a hate crime.

* "God invented man because he was disappointed in the monkey." ~Mark Twain

* I still have a fondness for interesting chairs, which was proved by my newest addition of a plush black swivel chair.

* Old driving habits have not completely left me, like flooring it when my passenger yells, "Just floor it, we can make it!", or driving with my foot out the window.

* I still dislike cooking for just me... I need to like leftovers more.

* My thesis is interesting, but I wish I wasn't already behind. I can't say my comps reading is interesting, but I'm even farther behind on that.

* I can still run across the street and dodge cars in nearly 6 inch heels.

* I enjoy living alone, and only having to deal with my crap.

* It's been a blast hanging out with the second year grad kids again and getting to know the first years. I for see lots of drinking in the future.

* Some of those old demons are rearing their ugly heads again. I hate when baggage I thought I'd left behind shows up on my front door step.

* I can't wait to be able to read what I want to and not what I have to.

* Overall, things have been fairly good recently even if busy.

Back at school (mini-update)

I'm back at school for my last year as a graduate student, and things are already busy in the first week. However, last night I housed the first party of the year, and it went off really well. A lot of the first and second years showed up and that rocked. The purple duck made an appearance at the party. For those of you who know the duck... he is still a whore, and people love him. I may have to cart him to class with me on Thursday night and just sit him in a desk. I had a blast last night, but now I have to go read two novels. So, the work continues.

one massive update

So, it seems like everytime I want to update this thing, I always end up sidetracked… then it’s a couple weeks after the fact, so here is a big update…

My sister’s wedding was very nice… the ceremony and everything went off fine, even though much sleep was lost right beforehand in all the last minute preparations. Overall it was tiring, however, I know my sister was very pleased with everything, which is the important thing. I ran around the entire day doing so many tasks from setting up, taking pictures, wrangling my nieces into place, to helping cut the cake for guests, etc, etc. Everyone said I looked very nice in my dress, and I think even some distant family/ friends of the family were a little surprised at seeing me all dressed up. Though for all of you out there that want to see a picture (since you seem to not believe that I do dress up occasionally, and clean up rather nicely I might add) hit me up over aim, and I’ll send you the link to see it. I was very happy when the wedding was over because I could finally take a break… thankfully, I got to take a nap before going to see the second Pirates movie. The whole craziness surrounding a wedding, seriously makes me consider just eloping if I ever reach the altar.

After the wedding, there was catching up on sleep and work and other usual busyness for a couple of weeks, but then I got some bad news. I found out Big Ben decided that life was just too much and decided to exit early. I went to high school with him (even though he was three years behind me), but then befriended him again at anime conventions. I remember him greeting me with a hug, saying I looked like someone who could use one, and I told him that I loved hugs, so how could I say no. We talked for awhile standing outside, and finally figured out why each of us looked so familiar because we used to go to the same school, then laughed at how small the word is sometimes. After that, I would get a hug anytime I saw the crazy 6’7’’ Jew at cons. He seriously could lighten anyone’s day. Ben, you will be sorely missed by many, many people. I know it’s going to take me awhile to not look for him looming over everyone in the hallway. I still don’t think it’s completely sunk in… even at the funeral it all felt so surreal. Since Cowboy Bebop was one of the first anime we ever discussed… I know my night sky is missing one of its stars. I hope you have found a rockin party and some peace wherever you are now.

In other news, I am still behind on my work for grad school and my thesis… I think this is going to be a continuing trend. Overall, life has had its rough spots recently, but I am still moving forward and doing alright. Also, apologies to all my friends if I have seemed distant for the last several days… it’s just the way I cope, but I should be almost back to normal now, and thanks for everything. ::hugs everyone::

Miscellaneous Updates

So, I had intended to update about the con and everything shortly after it was over, but life kind of got in the way. But here is a brief bullet type update:

~ AMA rocked… I was reminded of why this is the con that made me want to go to more, and now it has made me want to staff more.
~ Staffing was fun, but busy (finally real staff not poser staff =P)… my dealer’s seemed to like me, and it made me feel good when some of them hugged me before leaving and asked me what the next con I would be at (and if I was staffing it). =)
~ I got to see old friends and make new ones, which is always a blast… all of which are awesome people, who I can’t wait to see again.
~ Sunday night staff party, I got tipsy because Seth makes fantastic 151 rum strawberry daiquiris with rum whipped cream, and because of how I make my screwdrivers—mad props to Seth’s bartending skills. I didn’t go home until like 6 something Monday morning.
~ I was called trouble more times in four days than I think I have been in months… though I can’t deny that adjective. =)
~ Two words: Filthy Assistant
~ Diners at 4am carry good hash browns
~ My contact solution became the communal one (as 5 people needed to use it over like 2 days)
~ Messing with a cowboy’s mind, who is totally out of his element, for my amusement and other’s, is priceless.
~ 2 new shot glasses: one with Mugen and one with Jin
~ I love going to conventions, and I am reminded of this after each one. I can’t wait until the next one. AMA totally rocks my socks. I just need to remember to actually take more pictures.

Only bad sides were the Marriott (with the bellhop I almost decked), cowboys, and some issues with the convention center—but the positives so outweigh any negatives.

In other life news (the reason I have been so busy): my sister’s wedding is in a little over a week, and I am running around like crazy trying to help get the final preparations finished. And, I’m still trying to catch up on the workload I let pile up before the con. I should hopefully have a little more breathing room soon.

Question question!

Ooooh look, a double dosage of questions

First up, questions from whiteadelphi

1. How did you meet Bakabokken? (Name changed to protect privacy, of course. ^^) Do you know her IRL or is it purely online?
I met Baka through some mutual friends who pulled us all into an AIM chat, and because of the time difference (and me being a night-owl), she and I were of the few who stayed the longest. After that I started talking to her more and more and found we had quite a few similar interests in anime and manga, which resulted in many file swaps. Then, I looked at some of her shorter pieces and critiqued them for her. So I have yet to meet her in real life yet, although, next time I make it to where she is, I fully plan to visit... too bad we are on opposite sides of the country. >.<

2. What career are you aiming for past grad school?
Most likely something in the public relations field. Ideally, if I could combine my love and interest for anime and manga and my English skills to work in public relations for an anime company, then that would be a great job.

3. Favourite place to go and sit and think?
I have this really big purple velour dish chair that is one of the most comfortable chairs ever. I can curl up in it and sit half upside down or in a variety of positions, and it's a great place to just think. If not there, then in the shower, or driving at night with the windows rolled down and the radio up.

4. What's a common misconception that people you meet have of you?
This was a hard one. I had to ask a few people if they had any because usually I think people meet me, they see how I am. The only one I really got was one of my friends thought I was quiet and reserved when he first met me, then quickly realized how wrong he was.

5. What's a memory that makes you giggle when you think about it?
Haha, there are so many to choose from. Every drunk phone call from all my friends, they entertain me greatly. One memory that really comes to mind is a Halloween a few years ago. I was dressed as a dark faerie, and my friend Tomas bowed down to me (while dressed as a priest) and started "worshiping" me because I was the first person to have alcohol at an earlier age than he did, and that I can out drink him.

and now questions from dawnfire84

1. If you weren't majoring in english what else would you want to major in?
I was almost a psychology major, and I even took a few psych classes, but I just didn't have the want to pursue it. I also had interests in classics and theatre, but English is what really attracted my interest, especially since they had such a great department at my school.

2. What's the best prank or joke you ever pulled or did to someone?
Saran wrapping a car has to be at the top of the list. Layers of saran wrap, with various things of shaving cream, silly string, shampoo, soap, and I can't even remember what else in between the layers. Baked in the sun all day, and was a bitch to remove (thankfully I didn't have to remove it =P)... but did no damage to the car. Took a few hours to finish, but totally worth it. =D

3. What's your biggest fear?
Being trapped in a room filled with spiders and snakes, and I'm covered in bait. I think that's it...

4. Who is your biggest influence?
My grandmother Pauline, who died of cancer when I was in middle school. The way she faced life and death to this day amazes me. She only ever wanted me to follow my own path, my own dreams, and do this even if it was hard and if the rest of the family was against it. When my mom was pregnant with me, she said she wanted a granddaughter who would speak her mind, and after I was born people told her to be careful for what she wished for. =P It's the memories I have of her and what she told me that forms the biggest part of the foundation for who I am today.

5. If you could have any character come to life for just one day ::coughandnightcough:: who would it be?
Non-animated... Hamlet, just because that is my favorite Shakespeare play, and damn it, I want more inside information. =P
But because I am like 99% sure you mean from an anime or manga, probably Chrno from Chrno Crusade... because that is still one of my favorite anime/manga, though there are a few others I would probably choose if I was in a different mood.

So, I have finished my first year of grad school, and all I can say is I am fucking exhausted mixed with some relief. This past month has been hellacious between the work I had to get done and the internal politics bullshit/ drama occurring within the department. Hopefully I will have more of an update later or something after catching up on sleep.

However, I will leave you with some fun. This is why I should not click on links sent by drunk friends at almost 3 in the morning That thing is damn near hypnotic and addictive when sleep deprived.

::wanders off to crash, hopefully I make it to my bed::

Thunderstorms

Sometimes, I really do love a good thunderstorm. Tonight I went out and walked around/ played in this magnificent storm. It was raining hard enough to get me soaking wet, but not enough to be a torrential downpour, which is near perfect. Walking around barefoot listening to the thunder and watching the lightening streak across the sky felt so refreshing. I love spring and summer storms, such a good way to spend a lazy Friday evening. I'm sure my neighbors probably think I am crazy now, but it was so worth it.

I suggest everyone should at the very least walk around barefoot in a storm once, feel the wet grass/ground beneath your feet, and just experience the difference in the air. Do it.

(My sister told me I am crazy for doing it, and that I am going to get struck by lightening one of these days. =P )

Late night babbling?

Wandering around in bookstores is good for my soul. I have quite a few books to add to my list of things I want to read, now all I need to do is find the time for free-reading—hopefully this summer. I have to say that I find great ironies in what books are placed next to others because of the alphabetical listings in the fiction section. Overall, that was a well spent two hours tonight.

So, I thought I would actually attempt to write the post I meant to write like a week ago, especially since I can’t sleep. Over a week and a half ago, I turned 23. Birthdays tend to make me reflective, but this year I had extra things to think about. Quite a few of my friends, who either this year or previously, flipped out at turning 23, and it seemed more like a death sentence than anything else. I don’t understand why, 21 and 22 are not the last birthdays you are allowed to celebrate with enjoyment. Some seem to have felt they had failed at life by not doing more at 23 or it marks the end of being able to have fun.

I’m 23 years old, but I feel like I have so much ahead of me, and that life up to this point has barely been a beginning. Until I was 18, I was in a limited school environment that allows for some self-discovery, but really, I feel much of my high school life was only cursory. I will say high school feels so long ago, and I am happy to be far from that point. Whoever said high school years are the best years of your life—is a dirty liar. I loved college. I was able to pursue things I enjoyed and able to connect with people I otherwise would not have come across. I moved into my first apartment when I was 19, sophomore year, and that was a wise decision because I am not meant to live with another person in a 12 foot by 12 foot space, without my own kitchen. The trading of ideas that occurred on campus and off, I will always cherish. Almost being arrested for vandalism because I colored on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk, that’s a story I will tell my nieces’ children. College was where I began to feel comfortable in my own skin. I may still be unsatisfied with my appearance at times, but I finally like myself for who I am as a person. Being able to say that after the several years of emotional abuse by my peers and certain family members—believe me that is a big step. I look back on the path I have taken, and I realize even my missteps that cost me dearly, are a part of what make me, me.

I’m 23 years old, and still in school, but I chose that because for what I decided to pursue, I need more than one degree to make me marketable. Hopefully being a “master” at something will be worth it in the end. I have found individuals here who provide very enlightening and interesting information, and being able to argue with someone for an hour about certain literary concepts is fulfilling on one level. I do wish the program provided more opportunities for that instead of grueling research sessions to produce papers. But, the program is what you make it, and I’m determined to make it satisfying. The past year or so has brought about many changes, but overall, they have all been for the positive, so I can’t really complain. One of the things that I have started doing, with the some of the best results, has been going to anime conventions. I have had so much fun on those weekends, and met some of the most amazing people—it really is an addiction. I’m trying my best to keep in contact with the people I meet because they all seem so interesting and different, and I want to get to know them better—I value good people a lot. Maybe it’s selfish, but I like to surround myself with interesting people, who help me in one way or another grow as an individual. I truly am a social creature. However, I still value my moments of solitude, which is probably why living by myself has never been a problem.

I realize I don’t feel 23. I don’t know what age I feel, but maybe it’s that I don’t feel confined by a number. My closest friends span anywhere from 21 to 40, and the closest ones are probably more in the 26 and upwards category, with a couple of exceptions. I am able to connect with these people, which I am thankful for everyday. I think it’s because when I was younger I felt like I related better to adults than my peers, who knows. My sister is twelve years older than I am, and we have never been closer than we are now. I cherish all my friends, because they are my extended family. They make up for the crappy half of my family that I will probably never really reconcile with. I realize my father and I have never had a relationship at all, and probably never will. The few attempts that I have made since my parents divorced have failed miserably, so I am finally coming to terms with the fact that my father will probably only remain an obligation to me—and little more than a stranger, and I’m okay with that. I tried, he didn’t, so the ball is no longer in my court. I have a wonderful mother and sister, who make up for the craptasm that is my dad. (If you have ever heard me tell stories of my dad, you know how bad he is, and if not ask me sometime and I’ll elaborate.)

As I embark on another year in life, I am thankful for all that I have and all I have become. I’ve almost died, I’ve almost been paralyzed, but I am still here and healthy. I am thankful for the knowledge I have learned thus far about life, people, and myself, and look forward to all that is ahead of me. I am thankful for my family, and my second family (all my friends out there). I don’t look at 23 as a door closing, I look at it as a door opening because there is still so much left for me to do, see, and accomplish.

As an endnote, I have to say having my wisdom teeth all ripped from my skull has been one of the best experiences for me because it allowed me to step back away from my work and actually think about things in my life without over-thinking them. I had once again let my work for classes consume me to where I was losing focus, and having to stop for the surgery, let me regroup. I raise a glass to being able to live another year and to all of the people who make my life worth living. Thanks. =)

Just wanted to let everyone know, I am indeed alive. To answer all the voicemails, emails, and text messages (all of which I greatly appreciate--makes me feel loved), no I did not die, nor was I carried away by zombies, or eaten by plaque (that was an original concept), and finally I did not descend into hell to initiate a takeover.

However, I was at home in Richmond with crappy to no internet access, and I spent most of my time either sleeping or hallucinating with brief moments of lucidness in between. I'm back at school, but still sore and dizzy from the meds. Hopefully my recovery will start happening faster and I will feel better soon. I hope everyone is doing well. Coming soon (when I have free time and can sit at the computer long enough): con report and birthday musings + life observations while on narcotic painkillers.

Birthday Eve

This past weekend was fabulous, I had SO much fun at Katsucon. Hopefully I will get a con recap post up here soon. Unfortunately, since I have been back at school, I have been doing lots of work because of my wisdom teeth being removed on Friday, which means I will be practically comatose all weekend. Blah.

However, there were a few things about con I wanted to post now, since who knows how long it will actually take me to post everything. (There will be shameless plugs for other people, you have been forewarned.)

I got to see Studio Tavicat again, and they were super nice just like last year. I purchased quite a bit of stuff from their table (actually I spent the most money there), and their artwork continues to amaze me. I know a lot of you who read my journal also read manga. You all need to check out their manga Shutterbox. I said it last year and I will say it again, go buy all three volumes now! Most of you on my friends list will love it. Check them out in lj shutterbox. There you can find some sample pictures and links that will take you to even more. You know you want to.

The dances were awesome. I have not danced so much in a very long time. It left me feeling old and broken, but it was so worth it. I had so much fun. Time for shameless plug number 2.
djluminal was the dj for Saturday night, and it has been awhile since I have heard a dj that really rocked. Awhile ago when I was wanting music, a lot of you gave me great suggestions, now I am returning the favor. Check him out. His lj page should supply you with good samples. GO LISTEN! ::raises fist in threatening manner::

I had a blast running into friends I hadn't seen in awhile and making new ones at Katsucon. I highly suggest all of the anime fans on my friends page to go to a con, it is so worth the money.

Okay, I have to head to class. I hope everyone is doing well. Check out the above links, (you know I only shamelessly plug stuff I really like).

Commercial Holidays suck

So, most all of you out there know I don't observe the commercialistic holiday of Valentine's day that Hallmark and chocolate makers stole from the Catholic Church (not that I mind warping traditionally Christian holidays into something else, but that is another post itself). However, the excessive pink and stigmas with this holiday just turn me away, but I don't go the anti-route by wearing all black and mourning all day because frankly that's just as pathetic and buying into a whole different popular stigma. I also think you should express your love for your significant other, friends, family, humankind, etc. throughout the year and not just on a solitary day. Alas, I babble (which is what I get for posting at 5:30am after no sleep, oooh in a half an hour I could go buy bagels and homefries).

But, I thought I would show a kind gesture to all my friends on here and wish you a wonderful day that you can celebrate as you see fit or ignore as you see fit. I know I have been out of contact with a lot of you because grad school life is busy and limits the freetime severely. But, I love you all and hope life is treating you well. Have a great day, all of you. ::virtual hugs everyone and luff gnaws them::

p.s. The only significance I really have for Feb. 14th is that in 8 days I get to celebrate my birthday! woo! =D

I just wanted to let everyone know I am indeed alive...

the last three weeks of my semester about killed me, very little sleep + high stress + over-caffeination + bad dietary habits + tons of work = my body is very angry with me

ever since I have been home, I have been sleeping a lot and have not felt like doing very much or being very social because I am just so exhausted ... I think my body is trying to recuperate and catch up on all the lost sleep, for example: yesterday, I got a bad migraine with nausea and feeling all around horrible, so I fell asleep around 7pm, slept until 4am, then took tylenol, back to sleep by 6am until 10:30am, which is more sleep than I am used to.

Anyway this is already more than I wanted to type, I just wanted everyone to know I am alive and that I miss you all. Hopefully, I will feel well enough to talk and catch up with everyone soon. ::hugs to everyone and Happy Holidays::

p.s. I got my grades: A, A, and an A- in my hell class. I'm excited.

AIDs awareness week

A selection from "Wings" ... a poem by Mark Doty

"In the Exhibition Hall each unfurled
three-by-five field bears
in awkward or accomplished embroidery

a name, every banner stitched to another
and another. They're reading
the unthinkable catalog of the names,

so many they blur, become
a single music pronounced with difficulty
over the microphone, become a pronoun,

become You. It's the clothing I can't get past,
the way a favorite pair of jeans,
a striped shirt's sewn onto the cloth;

the fading, the pulls in the fabric
demonstrate how these relics formed around
one essential, missing body.

An empty pair of pants
is mortality's severest evidence.
Embroidered mottoes blend

into something elegaic but removed;
a shirt can't be remote.
One can't look past

the sleeves where two arms
were, where a shoulder pushed
against a seam, and someone knew exactly

how the stitches pressed against skin
that can't be generalized but was,
irretrievably, you, or yours."

I wish I could change the world ... no one deserves this. Nina, you remind me of how much strength a person can have, but you know I am always here for you, even if I can't phrase what I want to say correctly all the time.

Everyone should read Mark Doty, especially his book My Alexandria.
