<lj:music>The Used - Let It Bleed</lj:music>

So yesterday my stepsister Amber, my niece Angelina, and I all went up to visit Rich. It was a very good visit, he was very alert and responsive; of course that probably had more to do with the fact that his friends Erika and Kim (I hope I got that right, my memory is pretty much gone after I've worked) were up there.

He really got a kick out of Angelina being up there, she's 7 months old and when she saw Rich she started smiling and waving at him so he lifted his hand up (which was in those dumb ass mittens that look like white boxing gloves) and she kind of grabbed it and he smiled at her. Then I was holding her since I was sitting down and she was touching his arm, and I moved back so that Kim could cut Rich's nails (the nurse said as long we don't leave him alone with them off that we could take the dumb gloves off), and she got all upset.

All in all he's doing really good and it really helps when he has visitors other then his family because well we're family. Erika also brought him up a stuffed animal which is a cat named Erika, and she made him a CD which he seemed to like better then his 4 channel TV of course the CD was MSI.

I didn't get to go up tonight because I had to work and I won't get to go tomorrow but I should be going Friday & Saturday since I only have to work from 9-5. Moe's the best!

But that's another entry...

    <lj:music>Marc Broussard - Gavin's Song</lj:music>

I really fucking hate anything that has to do with The University of Maryland Medical System, I mean this. They really need to learn how to keep my father and I in the fucking loop about what they are doing to/with Rich.

For example they say we're going to put the feeding tube in his throat to see if it will help him get is swallowing ability back and what do they do put the damn thing directly in his stomach.

This one is my favorite, we didn't find out they were moving Rich to Kernan till today well technically yesterday (the day they moved him.) So for those that went to see him today and were completely thrown don't worry so were we...

Speaking of Kernan; could the place be more fucking creepy looking? No joke, I'll have to take some pictures of it to show those of that can't see it. I mean there is this one part on the far side of the hospital it looks like something out of a horror movie, it's rundown with clouded windows, boxes stacked in the different room and a silo looking thing on the side. Not to mention the green house which didn't look to green to me. All I have to say is this place is a breeding ground for ghosts!

His room isn't that great either there are three other people in the room, and it's just cramped. You really feel like you're invading these other people's space when you enter/exit.

I felt so bad when we walked in and saw the lovely poster that Erika(??)left because I hadn't been to see him in a week not because I didn't want to, but Dad was having a hard time dealing I guess.

At first he kind of looked at us like he didn't know who we were, which scared me. When he came to again though he was much more responsive, and looked from Dad to Deb, and then to me when he heard our names said so that's really good. I got the poster of the wall and just kind of pointed different things out to see what all he remembered.

We asked him a bunch of stupid questions, but since he can't talk it's all we can really do is ask him yes/no questions or tell him to squeeze our hand if he remembers. He remembers graduation but doesn't remember that mom is in Kansas, he seems to know what our Aunt Vickie looks like since when we mentioned her he started looking around the area for her.

I started to ask him something and he looked over at me then started coughing really bad (which is good because it helps clear his lungs) and he reached out grabbed my hand and starting squeezing it.

Now for the all important info about Kernan:

Website: Kernan Home Page
Room Info: Level T, Room 911, Bed 3 when you sign in just put "T 911-3"
Visiting Hours: Parking is decent and free!

Weekdays: 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Weekends: 12pm - 8:30pm

I will be up there tomorrow along with Dad and our stepsister Amber, so if anyone else is going to be up there as well drop me a line either by commenting, e-mailing me at: Anearlessworld@aol.com or IMing (AIM) me at: Anearlessworld

He responds very well to visitors and also they don't have him tied up...

Just a little update for everyone

Yesterday they wired his mouth shut to fix his broken jaw, and moved the respirator from his mouth to his nose.

Today when my dad went to the hospital to check on him and see what's going on (because they don't call when they do anything) he found out they were going to do some tests on his eyes to see if his eyes have healed enough that they could do the rest of the surgery. They did two of the three tests fine but he has to be awake for the third one and every time they tried he'd start fighting.

They did a few little tests asking him to squeeze dad's hand, and then they asked him to hold up one finger he didn't do it at first and then he holds up his middle finger; which my dad & I both got a kick out of. I'm positive it was intentional, because they've done it before and he's held up his index finger.

They just wheeled him into surgery to do the rest of the work on his face and it will last anywhere from 6-8 hours. We should know how he's doing around 7pm one of the nurses is going to give my dad an update.

Surgery....

All right so we have to call the hospital today @ 5 am to find out what time they plan to do Rich's surgery, which I'm still confused as to what all they are going to do. I guess it's possible that they might not do the surgery today at least that what they told my dad. So as soon as I know something you all will know something.

Rich's surgery will be today @ Noon they plan to go in and put screws in his cheeks and depending on how bad the fractures are they may have to go into his hip to remove some bone to put in his cheeks. They are also going to wire his jaw shut which I don't get how they can do that since he's on the respirator but dad's going to find out how that will work.

Well, they canceled the surgery deciding it would be best to wait a few days so they probably will do it Mon. or Tues. He's doing a little better he was able to see how many fingers the doc was holding up, and he squeezed Dad's hand. After a little while though he started to get a little combative trying to pull the breathing tube out which is pretty common.

All right so I get home from running some errands around I don't know 1:30pm and like always because nobody ever calls my cell I went and plugged my cheap little phone in to charge so that it will not die while I'm at work, which means I then must go to Guest Services and use the phone. I really don't mind that but I just wasn't feeling like I would want to.

I really don't know what time I got online, must have been between 2:30pm-3:00pm and I get an IM from a SN I don't know. Well turns out it's my friend Jamiee, who after I say hi says "Please tell me you have heard about Rich" my heart drops into my feet (Rich would be my little brother, not so little he's an intimidating person if you don't know him plus he's 18 so I'm sure he wouldn't like me calling him my little brother...not that I care) I respond with no because I hadn't and while she's typing I run to the back room to get my cell, sure enough it says on the screen "You have new voice messages" I didn't call to check figuring they had to do with Rich and come back out to say that Jamiee has written that he is @ University of Maryland Medical Center in Shock Trauma.

I know try to rapidly dial my box to check my messages cursing the phone for not dialing faster. First message is from Merlyn (my brothers friend of a long ass time) telling me a little bit more that he was either on his way or leaving work (did I know he had even found a job...of course not!)with Josh (didn't know who Josh was @ first) and that they hit a truck. I of course in my haste wanted to repeat the message to write down Merlyn’s # but instead I deleted it, next message is from Ash’s dad (Ash ‘s family has been letting my brother live in their basement for the last 3 months I think…) telling me to call him. I call hoping he can give me some more info, which he really doesn’t know anymore then I already knew.

I explain what’s going on to my Step-mother, and then preceded to call my dad, long story short on this, he kinda freaks and my step-mom goes to pick him up from work since he can’t take the work van. I stay behind thinking they were going to come back, and I also wanted to call the hospital and get some damn information.

I call the hospital and they direct me to Shock Trauma Patient information and I get the “We-aren’t-going-to-tell-you-jack-shit-relative-or-not” but they did tell me he was listed as being in Critical but Stable Condition and was currently getting a CT scan, they also told me he was intubated. A little while later Jamiee said she had just called and he was moved down to “Serious but Stable” better but not by much.

I also had to play phone tag to try and find a way to get in touch with my mom, I call her house # no answer so I leave a message (before calling the hospital), then I call my Grandparents and leave a message there, I decide that since I don’t have my cousin Scott’s number I will call Brad because I know he has my Aunt’s work number and she would know were my mom was since she lives with her. I tell my aunt what I know and then just sit and wait.

Blah blah blah

I get to the hospital and see/meet Josh’s family (who’s doing really well) and then I go up to see Rich. He doesn’t look good but not as bad as I was expecting, he’s got gauze over his right eye because he got a ton of lacerations near it, and he has a really nice shiner on his left eye. They had to sedate him because he was really combative, which I got to see when the medicine started wearing off and the blood that had accumulated in his mouth started to come out (I will fully admit I freaked) and they (nurses/doctors) rushed us off.

Yeah so in summery his nose is broke (they think on both sides), his jaw is broke (which means they will have to wire it shut), I think he may have broken his cheek bones, and the optimologist says it hard to tell right now with all the cuts but it’s possible he might have fucked up a nerve in his right eye.

We just called and found out that they sutured up all of his cuts and it took them about 2 ½ hours….

Oh yeah with the car they ran into the back end of a semi and they say that Rich hit his head on the bumper, the docs said he’s lucky to be alive after seeing the images some people they work with took of the car.
