And I've been productive :)

There is a second installment to this, but it's a bit bloody (almost healed but still black and blue broken fingers and the like, so just klick <here> if that's ok for you.

Progress Shots

I've been asked how I work, and I thought it would be fun to show a few progress shots. ;)

Most of the time, I'm inspired and then I throw myself into something and change the colours, the pose... well, mostly everything later. I guess I could cut my painting time down a third if I had more of a concept beforehand.
On the other hand, part of the joy of painting is the flow, so to speak. For me, that is. And I don't have to make a living with it, so what's fun is fun, right?

Most of the time I do not save the progress of my art because of my hard disc's size limit, but a few weeks back I offered to pinch-hit for a fest and had to draw something in a rather short amount of time. I saved a lot because I couldn't have afforded to start again from scratch.

End result

There you go. Apart from the mighty bright realisation halfway through that mint green probably wouldn't suffice mood-wise, I sticked pretty much to the original concept for this one.

Movies and TV shows I've seen recently (January edition)

Firefly
I've never seen Firefly, can you believe it? Lots of people say it's one of the best shows ever and I completely missed it until now. I admit it took me a few episodes but then I really liked it. Captain Reynolds and Inara, aww. ;)
I watched the movie afterwards and didn't like it at all. Too much explosion, too many characters dying I cared for. Bah.

Elemantary
I'm not totally hooked, but I like it enough to watch it regularly. Highlights being Holmes crashing the car in the first episode and setting out to torture "M" with his mad grin and pockets full of dubious equipment.
I don't believe Irene is actually dead, of course, and she might as well be one of the bad guys. He won't be able to cope with that, I think.
So well; potential.

A Young Doctor's Notebook
I admit I like black humor a lot and this is a brilliant show. There is no other way to say it – brilliant.
Who would have thought Radcliffe had it in him?

Game Review: Dishonored

While I'm not much of a gamer (I think I stopped playing frequently someplace after Super Mario when I was a kid), once in a while there is a game that captures my interest. Arkane Studio's Dishonored is one of these games. They invented a stunning world (based on 19th Century England) that is visually extremely appealing in its mix of beauty and decay, and the story is gripping and has a lot of potential, too:

Your play the former bodyguard of the Empress. When she is killed and her daughter abducted, you are framed for her murder and sent to prison to be tortured for a confession. Months later, you escape - finding the world you've known gone forever.
From the official description of the game: As you move though a world torn apart by plague and oppressed by a government armed with strange new technologies, the truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city.

I love how the games gives you a lot of freedom. There are things to be achieved, but how you do it is your choice - and it effects the final outcome. So from a peaceful ending to a high-chaos plague ridden end, the choices are yours to make.

Skyfall

Well, well! I was positively suprised. I don't know how I ended up in that movie (oh yes - my granny of all people wanted to see it).
Because obligatory car chases and things randomly blowing up bore me to death usually. I made it through this one okay, though. ~~And yay for self surgery.~~ Erm.
Also, what's the most overused sentence in ALL OF HOLLYWOOD?

A storm is coming.

Good lord.
And, wait, that young Q with his floppy hair. So when he's trying to be discreet and do things on his computer his superiors should not notice, he uses the beamer in the conference room. Sure. :)

Merlin (season 5)

WTF.
Sorry, can this show get more absurd?
I mean, create a verse, as strange as you like, with rules and ways people act as strange as you like, but THEN STAY CONSISTANT.
So one day something is a big problem, the other day it is solved so easily that the creators don't even bother the show the scene that lead up to it, etc, etc. Grrr. I'm not sure why I'm still watching this.

Elementary

As I've said before, there is yet to be a Sherlock Holmes Verse I don't like. (Except maybe this.)
I'm not sure how much I like *him*, though. Not Jonny Lee Miller as an actor, he's doing fine, just the role he's playing. That Holmes just hasn't done a lot to capture my heart... yet. (Except crashing a car out of uncontrolled anger.)
But I'm determined to give it a try. The verse has potential... and I'm patient.

Any thoughts?

On fests and exchanges ...

It seems to be the season for them. I like it. It's fun. Plus it's a pretty sure way (for me) to make sure I get something done.

Yet the problem is... it's not enough that somebody – anybody – might like what you've done, but you want *that one* person to like what you did. With art it's often the case that people state they are open to receive art, but the more detailed promps are mostly fic only. Meaning they are great story ideas but they can not be put in one or two pictures. (At least, by me, that is.)

So if I'm lucky, I get a favourite Verse and/or pairing out of a sign-up post. A good start, but is it enough? How to make sure I come up with something my recipient will enjoy?
Next step is ~~stalking them a bit~~ trying to get an overall vibe of the person I draw for, but still... I don't know. I'm not sure if that's good enough. I keep dumping sketches this time because halfway through I start thinking that it has nothing whatsoever to do with my recipient.

Illustrating somebody's fic is another option. But what if it is not possible? Like, you're not speaking the recipients language, fic is friends locked, not the verse recipient asked for, ... (I think my flist is save, but to be sure I try to remain vague here.)

Any thoughts on this?
What would you like to receive when it comes to art?
How do other artists / you writers get inspired?

The Testament of Sherlock Holmes // Frogwares - PS3 and PC game

So I finished The Testament of Sherlock Holmes today.

I'd love to discuss it with people who have played it, anyone around?

First of all: WOW at the character design. Honestly, you can see beard stubbles on people's faces when you zoom in, woah.
Also, I love the settings. I've played to previous games, and I always loved the places they picked and the mood they evoked.

This time the old prison stood out for me, and, with a soft spot for everything circus, I ADORED the fun fair. Also, the music was brilliantly fitting.

The story itself, well. ;)
There are parts that didn't seem to work out too smoothly. For example, Holmes being totally out of character in the first part (before "dying"). Yes, they tried to explain later but it still felt off. ~~Threatening hungry, homeless children? Come on!~~

And though my fandom-heart jumped at Watson rescuing a beaten-bloody Holmes, I didn't quite get what both of them were doing in the sewers in the first place. (I know what they said, it just doesn't feel genuine.)

When the attic-children first realized they where Homlmes' and Watson's grand (grand?) children, I was like "No way!", but then that was before Moriarty's daughter (?) entered the stage. I didn't quite get her part, either, to be honest.

I did cheat here and there. I don't have the patience to run around one room forever just because I miss a clue in the wastepaper basket or the likes. I tried not to skip puzzles but had to in the end (merry-go-round bomb puzzle) because I knew I was so close and wanted to see how it all ends.

Anyway, all in all, I waited almost a year for this, the developers delaying publication again and again, and I have to say, all in all it was truly worth it.

What do you say?

~~Also, does anyone else thinks Holmes looks like the baddie in the first Richie movie here?!~~

With all my appreciation for the newer incarnations of the Sherlock Holmes Verse, I wholeheartedly agree that there is not enough love for Canon (ACD) Holmes.

But fear not, as some wonderful people put together a fest called acd_holmesfest. It's your usual fest: you sign up stating what you are willing to give (fic, art, ..) and what you'd like to receive, then the mods send out assignments. (Anonymous) posting has already begun and fabulous stories and art are being posted everyday. If you are into that sort of thing, share the love, go there an comment, it's what writers and artists feed on. =)

It's been almost a year. Nope, not dead. It's just that my fandom-life isn't as wide-ranging as it used to be. Yes, I'm still watching TV-shows (Fringe, at the moment) but none of it has really inspired me to pick up a pen.
BUT. The one and only fandom I really care for has had quite a month to account for.

With Guy Richie's Game of Shadows in theaters and BBC's Sherlock Season two on the rise, it is enough to pull even me back into old habits.

Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows

Ok, so I've been a die hard Sherlockian long before the first movie came out, and I was devastated when I first saw it. A lot of explosion with hardly any content. It grew on me, though, and meanwhile I came to appreciate the action-loaded over the top characterisation by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
So this time, I wasn't expecting anything other than a classic Hollywood movie: expensive stage setting, big costumes, hot pursuits, not-so-subtle-jokes.

And I wasn't disappointed. It had all that. Plus a hook. More than I had hoped for, I guess.
(The typewriter killed me a bit, though. But whatever.)

Sherlock – A Scandal in Belgravia

Now that's more like it.
Meaning to say: I actually made sqeeing/awwing/wimpering sounds while watching it. I know that it is embaressing. But Sherlock/Molly Christmas interaction was just so painful/awkward I had to cover my ears.

Long story short: perfection. The end wasn't what I'd chosen it to be, but I can live with that, because throughout the movie there was witty dialogue, hints to canon, angst, friendship, drug references, emotion, violins, and, actually, a storyline.

Nothing exploded. And no fucking typewriters. Thank heavens.

I'm looking forward to the Hound next week, though I hope Sherlock is not absent during 3/4 of the story, sitting around in a cave. Mh.
