Animal Farm: (Authorized Orwell Edition)―A Mariner Books Classic Hardcover – April 18, 1996
Purchase options and add-ons
A special large-format edition of George Orwell’s classic, illustrated in full color by legendary gonzo artist Ralph Steadman
"Orwell saw, to his credit, that the act of falsifying reality is only secondarily a way of changing perceptions. It is, above all, a way of asserting power."—The New Yorker
In the classic dystopian novel 1984, London is a grim city in the totalitarian state of Oceania where Big Brother is always watching you and the Thought Police can practically read your mind. Winston Smith is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.
Lionel Trilling said of Orwell’s masterpiece of political fiction, "1984 is a profound, terrifying, and wholly fascinating book. It is a fantasy of the political future, and like any such fantasy, serves its author as a magnifying device for an examination of the present." Though the year 1984 now exists in the past, Orwell’s novel remains an urgent call for the individual willing to speak truth to power.

About the authors

George Orwell is one of England's most famous writers and social commentators. Among his works are the classic political satire Animal Farm and the dystopian nightmare vision Nineteen Eighty-Four. Orwell was also a prolific essayist, and it is for these works that he was perhaps best known during his lifetime. They include Why I Write and Politics and the English Language. His writing is at once insightful, poignant and entertaining, and continues to be read widely all over the world.
Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell) was born in 1903 in India, where his father worked for the Civil Service. The family moved to England in 1907 and in 1917 Orwell entered Eton, where he contributed regularly to the various college magazines. From 1922 to 1927 he served with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, an experience that inspired his first novel, Burmese Days (1934). Several years of poverty followed. He lived in Paris for two years before returning to England, where he worked successively as a private tutor, schoolteacher and bookshop assistant, and contributed reviews and articles to a number of periodicals. Down and Out in Paris and London was published in 1933. In 1936 he was commissioned by Victor Gollancz to visit areas of mass unemployment in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) is a powerful description of the poverty he saw there.
At the end of 1936 Orwell went to Spain to fight for the Republicans and was wounded. Homage to Catalonia is his account of the civil war. He was admitted to a sanatorium in 1938 and from then on was never fully fit. He spent six months in Morocco and there wrote Coming Up for Air. During the Second World War he served in the Home Guard and worked for the BBC Eastern Service from 1941 to 1943. As literary editor of the Tribune he contributed a regular page of political and literary commentary, and he also wrote for the Observer and later for the Manchester Evening News. His unique political allegory, Animal Farm was published in 1945, and it was this novel, together with Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which brought him world-wide fame.
It was around this time that Orwell's unique political allegory Animal Farm (1945) was published. The novel is recognised as a classic of modern political satire and is simultaneously an engaging story and convincing allegory. It was this novel, together with Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which finally brought him world-wide fame. Nineteen Eighty-Four's ominous depiction of a repressive, totalitarian regime shocked contemporary readers, but ensures that the book remains perhaps the preeminent dystopian novel of modern literature.
Orwell's fiercely moral writing has consistently struck a chord with each passing generation. The intense honesty and insight of his essays and non-fiction made Orwell one of the foremost social commentators of his age. Added to this, his ability to construct elaborately imaginative fictional worlds, which he imbued with this acute sense of morality, has undoubtedly assured his contemporary and future relevance.
George Orwell died in London in January 1950.

This review is *not* of the story (it's an enjoyable, easy-read novel with valuable lesson), but an caution-for-others on the physical quality of the book I received.
As shown on the photo, I received a book with a defective binding. I would warn others to check your books -- especially if you don't plan on reading it right away -- just to be certain it was bounded correctly. Otherwise, the book is great: Nice large text, and fantastic illustrations throughout. hth.

The hardback 50th anniversary edition comes in superior thick semi-gloss paper which is non-reflective and will not yellow with time, and print which is a bit larger than the average, making it a pleasure to read. The illustrations by award winning artist Ralph Steadman are arts works all their own, and enhance the story's narrative quite impressively. A classic novel deserves the best realization, and this Harcourt, INC edition has set the bar higher then ever.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI just reread Animal Farm after seeing the movie Mr. Jones, which was about an English political researcher who went to the Soviet Union then on to Ukraine to document exactly what Stalin was up to pre WWII, as the British lords were minimizing news of Soviet atrocities and obfuscating the source of Soviet financing.
Animal Farm is a simplistically written, dystopic satire about how easy it is to gaslight – to make other people believe black is white when they have every reason to know better. I.e., don’t believe your lying eyes. The gaslit we call sheep, and they are still with us. The “leaders” are pigs at the trough, an expression made famous by Arianna Huffington during the Bush years.
It is as existential as Ecclesiastes and Kafka’s Trial. If true of the Soviet Union‘s 1940s Ukraine experiment, it is true now – of capitalism and “politics” and political rhetoric. People lie and pretend. Listeners believe lies and pretend because they want to, are lazy or stupid or have limited resources.
Summary thoughts of the long-suffering wise donkey Benjamin: ‘hunger, hardship, and disappointment are the unalterable law of life.’ And nothing ever really changes.
Art by Ralph Steadman is fantastic in this 50th anniversary edition, 1995. Animal Farm is now almost 80 years old.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseA classic book with amazing illustrations. Should be in everyone's library and on most people's coffee table in the living room for friends and guests to enjoy looking at the artwork.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2010Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAs someone with a definate penchant for book collecting, I am used to having my books disappear on occasion. Whether this is mostly from me lending books out (a common practice; I have now instigated a library-like process for friends wishing to borrow) or from stealing, I'll never know. This is my fourth copy of Animal Farm, and I guarantee that no one will ever take it.
What could be better that the meshing of farm animals, Stalinistic politics and acid-drenched cartoons? Almost nothing I think. For anyone who has a love for either Steadman's work or Orwell's masterpiece will find this to be a delightful edition. It is also larger than I expected, doing much justice to the art, and in hardcover.
A huge fan of all the aforementioned items, my jaw dropped when I learned about this collaboration. Happy now that it is in my possession, I'm quite satisfied with the purchase. I would say that this is not a product for someone who is unfamiliar with Orwell or Steadman, then again, someone who knows neither wouldn't appreciate its anomaly. I think Steadman chooses appropriate classic works to illustrate - Freud's bio and Farenheit 451 are two others that I hope to soon own.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2015Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseGeorge Orwell's Animal Farm is a classic unrivaled by any other book in its time.
In fact, one could argue that this book is timeless, describing social, economical, and cultural problems we still experience to this day in a whimsical manner. Pair this amazing story with the likes of Ralph Steadman's incredibly dark and unique illustration style and you've got a home run. I keep this book in pristine condition, as I hope to pass it along to someone of significant value to me someday.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseWhat a great union of George Orwell and Ralph Steadman. Two great minds (and pens) in one book. We all know the story which of course is a classic and still so relevant today, and to team it up with Steadman was a genius idea. Great book, great illustrations. Thoroughly recommended.
