Dual timeline story full of heart!

Dual timeline story full of heart!
This new middle grade release from a favorite author was wonderful! All of the author’s previous books have been contemporary stories but in this book she delved into historical fiction and did an excellent job with the transition. She has a great author’s note at the end to explain a lot of the research and true elements behind the story. The Nine Moons of Han Yu and Luli is set in both 731 China and 1931 NYC Chinatown and both timelines depicted brave children trying to save their families from difficult situations. The contrast and similarity of the two time periods really captured the universal feelings of kids and the ways all of our stories influence and touch each other. I loved having characters that felt like actual kids and that showed the great capacity they have for making notable differences in their world. There is fascinating history, adventure, art appreciation, family and friendship dynamics, plenty of heart, and delicious food that definitely left me craving steamed buns! I also loved the maps and the little drawings throughout the story (which I think I heard that the author did herself!) I would highly recommended this book for a wide range of ages!

    Wonderful Dual Timeline

What a lovely story! Delightful narration swept me into this dual timeline, and now I want to try steamed buns since they were talked about so much.

Art, poetry, and food connect two children, Han Yu, from ancient China, and Luli, from 1930s Chinatown in New York. Both children face difficult circumstances and have to make difficult choices to help their families—one through a devastating plague, and the other financial ruin.

A great middle grade choice if you want to immerse yourself in Chinese culture, go on a perilous journey, and experience a deep, long suffering friendship.

I can definitely see why this is a Newberry Honor-Winner and was named a Best Book of the Year by so many!

Engaging story for middle grade and up

At first, I wondered why the chapters alternated between two totally different stories (one in ancient China, one in 1930s NYC). Both stories were interesting, but sometimes I felt a little lost, like I was reading two books at the same time and forgetting where I left off. But about 1/3 of the way through the book, the two stories began to intertwine in a very fascinating way.

The characters engaged me, the plot kept me intrigued, and the audiobook narration was excellent. I will definitely be sharing this with my kids.

    Beautiful middle grade story

This is a beautiful middle grade story that spans time from Ancient China to New York in the 1930s. The story contains art, poetry, dogs, camels, birds, and lots of dim sum. It reminds us that we’re all an important part of each other’s stories, whether we know it or not (from the author). I love the connection to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City in the authors note. Now I need to go and check out their amazing Asian art collection since it is not far away.

This book was an absolute joy to read. I took my time and savored the rich story that connected Han Yu’s adventures to the modern day story of Luli, a little girl who dreamed of opening a museum of Asian treasures of the Silk Road. It was a timeless joy and will be enjoyed by all who partake.

Creative take on the history of the Silk Road

3.75 Stars. This was not my favorite of the newest batch of Newbery Honor books. It was well written, however, it was a little like reading two separate books. We don't get to see the connection between the two stories until the very end. This is fine, but I have to admit I was drawn to the more "Fantastical" Ancient Chinese story than the story set during the Depression in China Town. As a result, I often rushed through the China Town chapters to get back to the Ancient China Chapters. That being said, it is a creative way to both introduce Chinese poetry and art and give us small glimpse into life on the Silk Roads in Ancient china.
